CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Euripides - Medea

2011

This is music created for the Medea production put on by stage director Antonis Antypas, as performed at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The Medea enacted there is Giorgos Cheimonas' adaptation from the original Euripides version of the play. Musically it has a timeless, exotic quality. Eleni Karaindrou utilizes a 15-member chorus; Eleni herself effectively contributes a solo part. Plus there is an 8-member chamber group with strong Greek and Eastern Mediterranean associations. The ensemble consists of three clarinets, ney, a player of the Constantinople lute (sounding much like an oud) and lyra, then cello, the santour, and the bendir. With these means Ms. Karaindrou creates a music of great evocative beauty, with its ancient scales and traditional instruments providing sound color and spatial punctuation, the vocals from chorus and soloists extending the sound and all-in-all creating a through-composed modern ambient pomo sort of work that is very identifiably Karaindrou-esque. Even in the purely instrumental passages the reflective, haunting melodiousness of Karaindrou comes through. It sounds less like ‘authentic’ ancient Greek-Eastern Mediterranean music as the idea of that as filtered by an ‘authentic’ Eleni Karaindrou sensibility. And it is one of her very strongest works at that. The performances are excellent, the sound all you'd expect from ECM [ Grego Applegate, Gapplegate Music Review ]

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Dust of Time

ECM’s recordings of Eleni Karaindrou’s music for films have always been more than “soundtracks”: they stand as independent artworks. So it is with the music written originally for Angelopoulos’s “Dust of Time”. In these intensely melodic compositions created from a delicate balance of instrumental colours, violin, cello and harp are especially important, as Karaindrou notes, “not only because of their own distinctiveness but also because of the inner quality of three participating musicians who live in Greece but were born in Rumania and Albania (Sergiu Nastasa, Renato Ripo, Maria Bildea). The flavour of their own musical tradition (tsiganiko) and of a very special inner feeling, permeates their playing. I had the feeling that the accordion had to pervade certain special moments with its colour; and the oboe should add some emotional touches on the canvas of my music.”

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Elegy of the Uprooting

2005

In her first concert recording for ECM, Greek composer and pianist Eleni Karaindrou seamlessly weaves samples of her sad but beautiful film and stage music from 13 scores spanning 22 years, producing a stunning career retrospective that transcends genre. The result is a wholly new body of work that she calls Elegy of the Uprooting. It is a remarkable, almost otherworldly, showcase for her intensely moving songs of love and loss.

Ulysses' Gaze was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Ulysses' Gaze, the album, is the third ECM recording to feature music written by Eleni Karaindrou for her countryman Angelopoulos. The first edition, issued under the title Music For Films focused primarily upon the director's great Trilogy of Silence (Voyage To Cythera, The Beekeeper, and Landscape In The Mist). The second presented music written for The Suspended Step Of The Stork, Angelopoulos' critically-heralded 1991 film.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Eternity And A Day

1998

Music for the Golden Palm winning film by Theo Angelopoulous, writt en by Eleni Karaindrou, whom Time magazine has hailed as 'Greece's most eleoquent living composer'. The worldwide success of Ulysses' Gaze has shown how convincingly Karaindrou's themes can take on a life of their own. Her melodies have been described as 'dark and brooding, redolent of red wine and the salty brine of the sea, at once plaintive and erotically lyrical.' Karaindrou's score for 'Eternity and a Day' makes poetic use of the instruments of Greek folk music, particularly the sound of the clarinet, keening in the mountain air, or hovering over a rich bourdon of strings.

“How does one leave?”

This question haunts The Suspended Step Of The Stork, Part I of Theo Angelopoulos’s “Borders” trilogy. A film of subcutaneous power, it finds beauty where there is suffering, stark yet foggy, as if through tearful recollection. Peeling layers to the emotional center of Stork is composer Eleni Karaindrou, whose soundtracks were never so much inserted into as bled from the late Greek director’s canvases. Hers is the audio equivalent of a tracking shot, scrolling through face, space, and race with barest touch. “Refugee’s Theme” shrouds the credits like an overture to lives whose variations are leaves on a tree of displacement.

Of those lives we get only leitmotifs, each seeming far too short in the grander symphony of human suffering. Like the bodies floating in the opening shot, they bob at the whim of two rhythms: one natural, the other mechanical. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: The Weeping Meadow

2004

A masterpiece of musical narration… Once more, Eleni Karaindrou, in a magical and dreamy, yet totally direct and down to earth way, has introduced us to the ambience of the film, building her own parallel sound creation. The ECM New Series’ album The Weeping Meadow is something really outstanding… The music is an elegy, an Eastern type blues – from a very specific part of the East, round the Black Sea – which changes and alternates without losing its basic essence and target for a moment. The album consists of Eleni Karaindrou’s original music, a fact which gives independence to the work and significance not limited by its function as a soundtrack. The music has such immense dynamic and such active narrative power … that you can feel the film even if you haven’t yet watched it!

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Trojan Women

2002

An exquisite musical fresco in black and white. This is how we can characterise and describe Eleni Karaindrou's musical work, which has emerged out of Antonis Antypas' theatrical interpretation of Euripides' "Trojan Women". The play was presented in Epidaurus in 2001 and is still intensely moving both for Easterners and Westerners. In the production the music accompanies and assists the drama as a faithful friend and companion. Now, in the recorded version, it is the drama which assists and serves the music as a faithful friend-companion. The thirty brief musical moments from the performance which form the discographic unit, thirty vibrations of sound and rhythm, umbued with the scent of genuineness, transform the grandeur of the drama in an awesome way, resurrecting memory and igniting imagination. A timeless anti-war cry, an incessant lament: this is what Euripides' tragedy is.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Concert In Athens

2013

ECM’s Manfred Eicher acted as artistic director for this 2010 live concert, bringing in the likes of Jan Garbarek and the brillant violinist Kim Kshkashian as soloists. There are marvellous things here. Karaindrou’s style is generally understated and subtle. Colours are muted, tempi tend to be restrained. Yet the music always moves, seems to be going somewhere and has something definite to say – there’s a welcome lack of ambient, moody blandness. [...] Kashkashian’s viola solos are sublime. The most remarkable thing about this CD is the wondrous sound. It’s warm, rich and detailed. I ended up listening to this in a darkened room, endlessly replaying the four-minute Dance from Ulysses’ Gaze. So good you’ll rush out immediately and buy copies for all your cinephile friends.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: David

2016

The stage cantata David features Eleni Karaindrou’s music for a unique piece of Aegean drama, a verse play with words by an unknown 18th century poet from the island of Chios. Its text (first published only in 1979), invites a musical response and Greek composer Karaindrou rises splendidly to the challenge, imaginatively moving between past and present in her settings for mezzo-soprano and baritone singers, instrumental soloists, choir and orchestra. Kim Kashkashian’s evocative viola against strings may trigger associations with Karaindrou’s acclaimed writing for Ulysses’ Gaze. The music also draws inspiration from the world of baroque opera as singers Irini Karagianni and Tassis Christoyannopoulos are brought to the foreground. Karaindrou’s David is a work of changing music colours . Recorded live at the Athens Megaron, it was edited and mixed by Manfred Eicher and Nikos Espialdis for CD release.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Tous Des Oiseaux

2019

Greek composer Eleni Karaindrou’s new album draws upon music created for two special projects: Tous des oiseaux, a play by Lebanese-Canadian writer Wajdi Mouawad, and Bomb, A Love Story, a film by Iranian actor-director Payman Maadi. Tous des oiseaux, has won great acclaim for its bold exploration of the complex web of cultural identity; Karaindrou says of the play that it opened new horizons and broadened her perceptions. Meanwhile, Bomb, Eleni’s first new cinematic collaboration since the death of Theo Angelopoulos, has just been nominated for an APSA award for Best Original Score. Both works feature compositions for string orchestra and Karaindrou’s cast of gifted soloists. In what is now a thirty-year tradition, extending back to the Music for Films recording of 1990, Karaindrou’s luminous themes and arrangements acquire new contours and continuity through the mixing and editing of producer Manfred Eicher.

The trumpeter seems to have found an ideal venue, his penchant for the oblique statement and ventilated ensemble nicely couched in a pristine recording and a magical ensemble. Alessi’s compositions have an allusive vibe, less outright statements than skeletons on which the band drapes its sounds […] The quality of bold indirectness that makes ‘Quiver’ so exceptional is also integral to Alessi’s playing. He can squeeze a run like a lemon, juicing a melody into a little pool of liquid, or he may croon as on ‘Heist’, growing animated but never brash, always reaching for refreshing notes.

2013

On these 10 pieces he sounds quietly wired and fascinated by what his partners are firing at him, while not remotely detached from his signature virtues of tonal purity and unflustered invention. All the pieces are his, from the initially free-fluttering title track with its soft trumpet doodles over slow-moving piano and percussion, through the delicately prancing ‘Chuck Barris’, to the weaving ‘Throwing Like a Girl’ with its shivery snare-drum tattoo and prodding piano lines. Moran is as attuned to his surroundings as ever, Gress and Waits keep the pressure up but not the volume, and occasionally the whole set sounds eerily like the mid-60s Miles Davis quintet reinvented as a shyly slinky, contemporary-cool-jazz tribute.

CD ECM Records Michael Cain: Circa

1997

Michael Cain - pian
Ralph Alessi - trompeta, flugelhorn
Peter Epstein - saxofon sopran si tenor

Pianist Michael Cain teams up with trumpeter Ralph Alessi and soprano saxophonist Peter Epstein for some unusual trio performances on this ECM CD. The 11 group originals (by Cain and/or Alessi) alternate complex written-out sections with fairly free group improvising. Epstein's soprano and Alessi's trumpet blend together almost as if they were one person playing two horns simultaneously, while Cain's rumbling keeps the music from ever getting too tonal or comfortable. Ranging from what sounds like chamber music (it is often difficult to determine when the musicians are improvising) to stretched-out long tones and heated sections, this episodic and continually intriguing music is never predictable and rewards repeated listenings. CD ECM Records Stefano Battaglia: Raccolto

2005

Stefano Battaglia - pian
Giovanni Maier - contrabas

BBC Music Magazine - Jazz Choice

Battaglia approaches improvising as if it were an exercise in classical form and line: these are spacious, unhurried episodes where every gesture seems suspended in still, cooling air, dissonance and rhythmical daring seamlessly integrated into abstract yet curiously songful shapes. If anything, the pieces with Pifarely are darker than those with Maier: a recitative in memory of Luciano Berio reminds us forcefully of that master’s vision. Difficult, demanding and fascinating too.
Richard Cook, BBC Music Magazine

Although two CDs of essentially free jazz is essentially something for committed fans, rather than those who like it as an extra colour on the music’s palette, it has to be said that the two trios featured here offer some highly focused playing throughout. At their best there’s little to choose between them.

On his ECM debut, ‘Mbókó- Sacred Music For Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set And Biankoméko Abakuá’, the wildly original New York-based Cuban pianist David Virelles deploys folkloric sacred music from his homeland in a dynamic conversation with percussionist Román Díaz, fueled by improvisation. […] The participation of kit drummer Marcus Gilmore and double bassists Thomas Morgan and Robert Hurst is intricately woven into the music’s fabric, but the heart of the music pulses within the interactions of Virelles and Díaz. […] Boundaries between jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban music seem irrelevant for Virelles, and he has noted an embrace of the art’s social function, whether sacred or profane.

CD ECM Records David Virelles: Gnosis

2017

He uses ‘Gnosis’ to refer to ancient collective knowledge, and this music is about the intersection of cultures—contemporary improvisational language and Cuban sources, especially the sacred Abakuá percussion ensemble. There are over a dozen instrumentalists and vocalists employed, but they are mostly broken up into various small ensembles: the concert premiere was billed as ‘futuristic Afro-Cuban chamber music.’ […] Sections with the full ensemble (often with Allison Loggins-Hull's flute in the lead) such as ‘Tierra’ and ‘Visiones Sonoras’ alternate with more vocal selections, another feature for Morgan's bass with percussion (‘Nuná’), and solo piano. In fact Virelles closes out the set on piano with two unaccompanied tracks (‘De Cuando Era Chiquita’ and ‘De Coral’). Yet the entire program maintains a consistent tone, simultaneously ancient and contemporary: a ritual for the modern world.
Mark Sullivan, All About Jazz

In this vivid and exciting project, the Santiago-raised and New York-based pianist-composer David Virelles looks towards one melting pot from the vantage point of another. A far-reaching work with deep cultural roots, Gnosis speaks of transculturation and traditions, and of the complex tapestry of Cuba’s music – the sacred, the secular, and the ritualistic – but the work’s shapes and forms could only have been created by a gifted contemporary player thoroughly versed in the art of the improvisers. Strings, woodwinds and percussion all have their roles to play in Gnosis, viewed by Virelles as “several families functioning within one unit: this dynamic symbolizes multicultural interaction.” Virelles’ responsive piano and the vocals and percussion of Román Díaz, a profound figure in the transmission of Afro-Cuban musical history, are at the centre of the action. Gnosis was recorded at New York’s Avatar Studios in May 2016 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen has been a distinctive presence on ECM recordings by, amongst others, Tord Gustavsen, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Nils Økland, Wolfert Brederode and Jakob Young and has long maintained several projects of his own, including this trio, now in its 10th year of existence. And Then Comes The Night (named after the novel by Icelandic writer Jón Kalman Stefánsson), was recorded at Lugano’s Audiotorio Stelio Molo and Eilertsen, drummer Thomas Strønen, and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje make full use of what Mats calls the studio’s “special character and atmosphere” and the acutely-focused interplay the room encourages. “We came in with a number of compositional sketches and the intention of seeing what could be shaped from them, with Manfred Eicher’s help, in that specific space.“ The result is an album of subtle group music, sidestepping many of the conventions of trio playing, in a recording that demands and rewards concentrated listening.
