1990

Anouar Brahem - oud
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Lassad Hosni - percutie

Recorded in 1990, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority. “Phenomenal…this is pure Arab music, without ‘world music’ frippery,” wrote Karl Lippegaus in Stereo. Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni, whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café. Beyond the improvisatory brilliance, Barzakh gave notice also of Brahem’s gift for writing arresting themes and luminous melody, as illustrated by “Raf Raf”, “Parfum de Gitane”, “Kerkenah” and other pieces here.

Initially published in April 1991, vinyl is reissued in October 2017 as audiophile 180g pressing.

Souvenance - Music for oud, quartet and string orchestra

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Klaus Gesing - bas clarinet, saxofon soprano
Bjorn Meyer - bas electric

The music of Souvenance, by turns graceful, hypnotic, and taut and starkly dramatic, was recorded in 2014 – six years after oud-master Anouar Brahem’s last ECM album, The Astounding Eyes of Rita. “It took a long time to write this music,” he acknowledges, noting that his emotional world had been usurped by the unfolding story of political upheaval sweeping first through Tunisia then through the neighbouring countries.

Meaning ‘remembrance’, ‘Souvenance’, is the Tunisian oud master’s new album after a five year gap following quartet recording ‘The Astounding Eyes of Rita’ also on ECM that also featured Gesing and Meyer. In reuniting his former colleagues, Brahem has written a commanding and all embracing set that seamlessly captures and portrays emotions ranging from despair to joy, and pessimism to optimism that shows a real depth of vision. […] This is a wonderful album and Brahem should be congratulated for bringing together such passion and emotion in a set that for all its serenity speaks volumes. [ Nick Lea, Jazz Views ]

Anouar Brahem - oud

Francois Couturier - pian
Jean Marc Larch - saxofon sopran
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

"Anouar Brahem’s third leader date for ECM explores the oud player’s incidental music for Tunisian film and theatre as interpreted by a shifting nexus of musicians, new and old alike. His compositional side takes precedence this time around, for it is accordionist Richard Galliano who lights the foreground with “Comme un depart” and hardly recedes until “Des rayons et des ombres,” the latter a superbly jazzy romp with Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. Bassist and drummer, respectively, add buoyancy to “E la nave va” and “Aïn ghazel,” culminating in the shadow of Jean-Marc Larché’s soprano for the title track.

Charlie Haden - contrabas

This live album is amazing in its scope, power and beauty. On guitar or piano, Gismonti often sounds as if he's playing two instruments at once, combining fierce rhythms with shapely melodies while Haden's warm, rich bass broadens the music with grainy texture and depth...Gismonti and Haden always add twists to the rhythms and angles to the melodies, making the music prismatic. CD ECM Records Pat Metheny: Bright Size Life

In stoc

1976

Pat Metheny - chitara electrica
Jaco Pastorius - bas
Bob Moses - tobe

AllMusic: "Pat Metheny's debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing, with titles like "Missouri Uncompromised," "Midwestern Nights Dream," and "Omaha Celebration." There is also a sole harbinger of radical matters way down the road with the inclusion of a loose-jointed treatment of Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip/Broadway Blues," proving that Song X did not come from totally out of the blue. Besides being Metheny's debut, this LP also features one of the earliest recordings of Jaco Pastorius, a fully formed, well-matched contrapuntal force on electric bass, though content to leave the spotlight mostly to Metheny. Bob Moses, who like Metheny played in the Gary Burton Quintet at the time, is the drummer, and he can mix it up, too. "

This joint solo effort by Metheny and regular pianist and collaborator Lyle Mays is an impressive outing. In the process of stretching out away from the confines of the quartet setting of prior albums, Metheny and Mays presage the sleeker and more ethereal sound of the band's Geffen years on portions of the title track.

CD ECM Records Steve Tibbetts: Life Of

In stoc

2018
Steve Tibbetts - chitara, pian
Marc Anderson - percutie
Michelle Kinney - violoncel, drone

One-of-a-kind guitarist and record-maker Steve Tibbetts has an association with ECM dating back to 1981, with his body of work reflecting that of an artist who follows his own winding, questing path. The BBC has described his music as “an atmospheric brew… brilliant, individual.”

Life Of…, his ninth album for the label, serves as something of a sequel to his 2010 ECM release, Natural Causes, which Jazz Times called “music to get lost in.” Like the earlier album, Life Of… showcases the richness of his Martin 12-string acoustic guitar, along with his gamelan-like piano and artfully deployed field samples of Balinese gongs; the sonic picture also incorporates the sensitive percussion of long-time musical partner Marc Anderson and the almost subliminal cello drones of Michelle Kinney.

2009
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
The Hilliard Ensemble :
David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Steven Harrold - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

In addition to several medieval sources, included are works by early 20th century Armenian priest, musicologist, and composer Komitas; Nikolai N. Kedrov, a Russian composer of the same era; mid-20th century Greek composer Giorgios Sefaris; Estonian Arvo Part; and several original pieces by Garbarek himself. Like the first album, this one is suffused with a sense of distant mystery and a profound, powerful melancholy that is given voice with intense feeling. The sound again is spacious and warmly resonant, with an earthy, enveloping ambience. This album will be a must-have for anyone who loved the first one, and it should appeal to any listener with an affinity for meditative Eastern European spirituality, especially when tied to contemporary expressivity and stylistic freedom. The Hilliard Ensemble:

Recorded in a heavily reverberant Austrian monastery, the voices sometimes develop in overwhelming waves, and Garbarek rides their crest, his soprano sax soaring in the monastery acoustic, or he underscores the voices almost unobtrusively, echoing the voices, finding ample room to move around the modal harmonies yet applying his sound sparingly.

Those with nervous metabolisms may become impatient with this undefinable music, but if you give it a chance, it will seduce you, too. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: In Praise Of Dreams

2004
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Kim Kashkashian - viola
Manu Katche - tobe

Following a six-year break from recording, with only a guest appearance on bassist Miroslav Vitous' Universal Syncopations ('03) and a :Rarum compilation ('02), Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek returns with his first album of new material since Rites ('98). In Praise of Dreams continues along the path established by such recordings as Legend of the Seven Dreams , I Took Up The Runes , and Visible World. But while Garbarek demonstrates the same penchant for deceptively simple pieces with almost anthem-like themes, his collaboration with violist Kim Kashkashian and drummer Manu Katche results in something richer, something deeper than what has come before. CD ECM Records Andy Sheppard: Romaria

Andy Sheppard - saxofoane
Eivind Aarset - chitara
Michel Benita - contrabas
Sebastian Rochford - tobe

Andy Sheppard’s quartet extends the musical explorations begun on the 2015 release Surrounded By Sea, an album praised by Télérama for its “poignant serenity.” In this new programme of compositions by Sheppard (plus the title track by Brazilian singer-songwriter Ranato Teixeira), the drones and washes of Eivind Aarset’s guitar and electronics – aided by the generous acoustics of Lugano’s Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI – help to establish a climate in which improvisation can take place. There’s a highly atmospheric, ambient drift to the music which Sheppard clearly finds liberating, as do Michel Benita and Seb Rochford, free to move in and out of conventional rhythm section roles and to make impassioned statements of their own. Romaria was recorded in April 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

This extraordinary multi-instrumentalist is actually one of the few to have grasped in its essence what was the song of the world. With him there exist no territories or cultural atavisms, but a planetary polyphony projected on a horizon of eternity. His instruments exchange once more the out-lines of their countries of origin to become instruments without nationality in the hands of this nomad musician. Exceptional.

“Towards The Wind”, the 15th ECM recording by the perennially popular world-traveller and multi-instrumentalist, features his debut performances on the Armenian duduk, that exceptionally expressive forerunner of the oboe and the clarinet. Stephan Micus was inspired by recordings of the great duduk virtuoso Jivan Gasparian and was able to study with Armenia’s greatest folk musician in Yerevan in the autumn of 1999. Gasparian passed along to him some of the instrument’s secrets, the ways in which its wealth of textures and sounds can be annexed.

Stephan Micus - Sitars, Acoustic Guitar, Vocal, Bavarian Zithers, Shakuhachi, Sho, Thai Flute, Rabab

Although Micus has most often crafted albums at his home studio and sent them to Eicher for mixing and mastering, earlier ones such as this were recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where many of ECM’s formative releases were also realized. The studio dynamics imbue these travels with a rather different intimacy, one which brings its own climate and bounces back sunlight like the moon. Three Bavarian zithers, each with its own signature, form a dense and percussive bed for Micus’s singing in “Borkenkind.” His floating transpositions trail sutras of memory, spinning from them a yarn of forgetting. This becomes the sole purpose of the music: to detach oneself from the snares of fame and recognition until only the sound and the ear are left to dance unhindered. And indeed, when Micus sings again in “For M’schr And Djingis Khan,” accompanied by the uncut diamond of the rabab (Afghani lute), he balances on a tipping point into infinity, his mouth filled with empty pages. In stoc

2008

Stephan Micus - Doussn' Gouni, Duduk, Maung, Gongs, Tibetan Cymbals, Bavarian Zither, Sinding, Steel-String Guitar, Hammered Dulcimer, Charango, Nay, Bass Duduk, Voice

'Snow' is the title Stephan Micus has given to his 18th album for ECM. It is the outcome of continuous work he has carried out on journeys and in the studio since the release of his 'On the Wing' in early spring 2006. 'To me, snow is one of the most beautiful of all natural phenomena', explains Micus, who has been living in Spain for many years. 'It’s closely associated with lasting impressions of my original home in Bavaria, especially the long moonlit walks I used to take when I lived in the Alpine foothills. I've always regarded snow as the essence of magic, even more so today now that there's so little of it and the glaciers are disappearing.' Micus's music has always drawn on impressions of nature and the countryside. The inspiration for his new album came largely from a long study tour through Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and the mountains of the Caucasus. He travelled through these distant and extremely isolated regions partly by Jeep, partly on extended trips by foot. He met people from many walks of life and became acquainted with their living conditions and musical traditions.

"This album was recorded at the end of a tour in which frequent collaborators Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and the trio featuring gifted pianist Marcin Wasilewski had begun to investigate more improv-oriented methods, and it's freer and more organically generated than its predecessors.

The title track appears in three long manifestations through the set, with the first part in particular sounding like an all-but-perfect contemporary jazz/improv ensemble piece, developing from slow musings through sputtery, 60s-Miles trumpet eruptions, a series of Hancock-meets-Jarrett surges from Wasilewski, and eventually a subtly insinuating groove. Wasilewski's flowing energy ideally complements Stanko's timing and sense of space, but the whole empathetic foursome sounds more of one mind than ever." [ The Guardian ]
