CD ECM Records Tarkovsky Quartet: Nuit Blanche

2011

Francois Couturier - pian
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon
Jean-Marc Larche - saxofon sopran

The music is as subtly strange and delicately dream-like as Tarkovsky’s films and this disc has brief, fully improvised and especially abstract pieces running through it as well as longer, more formal compositions by Couturier, a bit of Vivaldi and an anonymous piece from the 15th century. […] The group improvs, named Rêve, Dream or Traum, sometimes make more use of the other sounds the instruments can make, whether it is percussive pops from the saxophone, wiry slides from the cello or rattling and wheezing from the accordion. Their unplanned nature makes them even more dreamlike in their unexpected twists and incongruities. […] Modern cross-genre chamber music of the highest order, and full of mystery which has the listener finding new things with every play of the disc. [ Peter Bacon, London Jazz News ]

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Astrakan Cafe

2000

Anouar Brahem - oud
Barbaros Erkose - clarinet
Lassad Hosni - percutie

The ECM label is usually linked with a pre-world music generation of musicians who absorbed international influences into a basically Western style. Here, though, is one of its select few stars from further afield, the oud player Anouar Brahem, in a haunting album of quiet, concentrated and poetic duos and trios with the Turkish clarinettist Barbaros Erköse and percussionist Lassad Hosni. The café of the title is symbolic of both transience and rootedness. Pace, rhythm and colour emerge from these simple resources, lightly poised and often catchy, though there are some heady improvisations and an arresting start as Erköse phrases his unaccompanied line with the sensitivity of a hushed voice.

CD Naim Antonio Forcione & Charlie Haden: Heartplay

2006

Antonio Forcione - chitara
Charlie Haden - bas

Heartplay is a subtle and sublime collaboration. Charlie and Antonio play a combination of compositions by each other, and a beautifully sparkling track called Child's Play by Fred Hersch.

Charlie's bass sounds beautifully deep and rounded, an incredibly satisfying and symbiotic partner with Antonio's guitar. These elegant and eloquent duets are totally atmospheric and an absolute joy to listen to

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: Timeless

1974
John Abercrombie - chitara
Jan Hammer - orga, sintetizatoare, pian
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

This evergreen stands tall in the ECM forest. There is no sense of competition, only mutual reveling in a distinctly nuclear sound. One could easily call it fusion, but if anything it is fused with itself, for it has created every element it seeks to combine. Timeless indeed.

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Leucocyte

2008

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

It's too easy to fall into the trap of calling the last recording by a recently deceased artist "his best ever" or "a fitting end to his recorded legacy," but in the case of the final release by Swedish jazz superstars e.s.t. before their titular leader, pianist Esbjörn Svensson, died in a tragic diving accident in June, 2008, it's the only way to describe it. Leucocyte is an album that's like nothing the trio has released before, yet it possesses the unmistakable personality that caused the group to rise from obscurity in the mid-1990s to rock star-like fame (at least, in relative jazz terms) in recent years with albums including Tuesday Wonderland (ACT, 2006) and the particularly noteworthy Live in Hamburg (ACT, 2007).

Culled from two days of free improvisations recorded in an Australian studio in the middle of a tour, it's proof that, despite the production veneer that gave earlier albums like Viaticum (ACT, 2005) a pop-like sensibility, e.s.t. was, at its heart, an improvising band. Many of its compositions—sometimes complex writing that remained completely accessible, but other times profoundly lyrical music of spare simplicity—stemmed from ad hoc days spent experimenting in recording studios. But while the group would normally take the results and shape them into more defined form, Leucocyte is presented as it was recorded—with, of course, the additional post-production that always broadened the group's aural landscape into something that drew on elements as far-reaching as Keith Jarrett, Radiohead and Motorhead.

CD ECM Records Shankar: Song For Everyone

1984

Shankar - vioara dubla cu 10 corzi, drum machine
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Zakir Hussain - tabla, conga
Trilok Gurtu - tobe si percutie

Shankar and Jan Garbarek’s previous collaboration, Vision, opened many people’s ears to the more fruitful possibilities of idiomatic blends. And while that initial project yielded a fascinating album in its own right, I always felt it lacked something I couldn’t quite articulate.

With Song For Everyone, that lack becomes clear once Trilok Gurtu and Zakir Hussain level the playing field with their earthy rhythms. In their presence, electric violin and saxophone can soar even higher, knowing there will always be a ground to return to. As if to underscore this point, Shankar also employs a drum machine, as in the delightful “Paper Nut” that inaugurates us into the album’s universe.

CD ECM Records Miroslav Vitous, Jan Garbarek: ATMOS

1992

Miroslav Vitous - contrabas
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran

editie Touchstones - format mini-vinil replica, coperti gatefold, cartonate

“Jan Garbarek is my favorite sax player,” Miroslav Vitous has said. “We have an incredible musical rapport and you can hear it. He understands my Slavic melodies and what I use for atmosphere because he’s European and his father was Polish, which is very close to me. I’m from Czechoslovakia. Our musical communication is astonishing: we each sense what the other is about to play.” Atmos, recorded 1992, features seven compositions by Vitous and two freely improvised pieces, yet sounds like the product of a shared mind, so well-matched are the expressive approaches of bassist and saxophonist.

CD ECM Records Tarkovsky Quartet:

2011

Francois Couturier - pian
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon
Jean-Marc Larche - saxofon sopran

The music on this album, with ist suite like sequence of compositions that flow like a cinematic reverie, comes across as a film-like invitation to a voyage. The spare, gently unfolding and intensely atmospheric melodies and moods deliver an invitation to listen with open ears … and to dream. Couturier has delivered a wondrous offering with compositions that open a path to a secret world. [ Nenad Georgievski, All About Jazz ]

Antonio Forcione - chitara :

"Tears of Joy is my ninth album. Recorded over a residency with hailed engineer Martin Levan at Red Kite Studios in the seclusion of deepest Carmarthenshire, I was joined by a host of world class musicians, including the Antonio Forcione Quartet. For me, Tears of Joy truly marks the affirmation of my vision as a composer and arranger.

An mixture of original material, the music on Tears Of Joy has been written, arranged and produced by myself. I have tried to evoke a wide range of emotions from deep contemplation to ecstatic celebration with emotional depth."

CD ECM Records Gary Peacock: Guamba

1987

Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Gary Peacock - bas
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn
Peter Erskine - tobe

editie Touchstones - format mini-vinil replica, coperti gatefold, cartonate

Gary Peacock’s recordings of the 1980s are production projects on which great players convened to play the bassist’s tunes. And the bass is fully a lead voice here, with title piece Guamba a Peacock solo to open the proceedings. As Paul Bley once said, “Gary is one of those rare musicians you could always count on to play better than you.” Nonetheless, there are mighty contributions from saxophone, trumpet and drums, with Jan Garbarek in particularly strong form. Jazz Forum: “Garbarek plays with magisterial power here.” Recorded 1987.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem, John Surman, Dave Holland: Thimar

1998
Anouar Brahem - oud
John Surman - saxofon sopran, bas clarinet
Dave Holland - contrabas

A strikingly attractive 'transcultural' project initiated by Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, who is both an innovator and a traditionalist in the deepest sense (he has been credited with 'restoring the sovereignty of the oud' in Tunisian music). There is no glib fusion of traditions on Thimar but rather a coming together of three very distinctive musicians who sacrifice none of their individuality in the search for common ground.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Road To Saint Ives

1990
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet, claviaturi, percutie

Although we might feel tempted to take Road To Saint Ives, one of John Surman’s most stunning solo albums to date, as a portrait of its titular coastal town, Surman states in his liner notes that such is not the case. Aside from the peppering of folk-inspired melodies in the soprano solos, the music breaks its own ground on the way toward unique improvisatory continents.

CD ACT Youn Sun Nah: Same Girl

2010

Youn Sun Nah - voce, kalimba, music box, kazoo
Ulf Wakenius - chitari
Lars Danielsson - contrabas, violoncel
Xavier Desandre-Navarre - percutie

If one were to listen only to "My Favorite Things," the Richard Rodgers-Oscar Hammerstein Great American Songbook standard that opens Same Girl, one might deduce that Korea's Youn Sun Nah is just another cabaret singer with a pretty voice. The kalimba with which she is accompanying herself as she sings -- the sole instrument heard -- lends a sense of purity to the tune, and although the vocalist avoids the usual routes taken with the song, there's no real reason to get excited. Yet. Then things get interesting, fast. [ AllMusic ]

In “She Moves On” this chameleonic and delightful artist has reinvented herself once again. In South Korea Youn Sun Nah is a national celebrity. CD ACT Youn Sun Nah: Voyage

Youn Sun Nah – voce
Ulf Wakenius – chitara
Lars Danielsson – violoncel, contrabas, melodica
Xavier Desandre-Navarre – percutie
Mathias Eick – trompeta

In our time and age, a jazz singer from Korea may still seem like an exotic concept. But anyone who knows how much effort Asian countries invest in education and promotion also knows about the growing circle of jazz fans in the region. So with notable exceptions it’s astounding that there aren’t more artists from Korea or Japan whose names are on everyone’s lips. However, Youn Sun Nah could change all that, and as the first Korean artist exclusively under contract with ACT, anyone listening to her debut album Voyage (ACT 9019-2) will understand why.

CD ACT Youn Sun Nah: Lento

2013
Youn Sun Nah - voce, kalimba, music box, kazoo
Ulf Wakenius - chitari
Lars Danielsson - contrabas, violoncel
Xavier Desandre-Navarre - percutie
Vincent Peirani - acordeoane

Generally, the arrangements are stripped down to the bare essentials; Nah is accompanied only by Wakenius's acoustic guitar on the title track, an ode to the caressing balm of nature, and on "Hurt," Nine Inch Nail singer Trent Reznor's melodically beautiful yet anguished account of drug abuse. On both numbers Nah's delivery is intimate and soulful. There's a similar soul-laid-bare intimacy in the vocal and bass intro to "Lament"; "My life is short and my days are running, as fast as you loved me, as fast as you left me," Nah sings, and there's striking contrast between the singer's slow, poetic delivery and accordionist Vincent Peirani's cheery lines.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Dansere (3 CD-Box)

Boxsetul este o reeditare a albumelor "Sart" ( 1971), "Witchi-Tai-To" (1973) si "Dansere" (1975)

Jan Garbarek - saxofoane, flaut
Bobo Stenson - pian, pian electric
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Arild Andersen - bas
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

A welcome return to the ECM catalog for three of the most striking of the early recordings which Jan Garbarek made for the label in the 1970s. In different but related ways Sart (1971), Witchi-Tai-To (1973) and Dansere (1975) brought freshly intelligent and invigorating perspective to bear on questions of dynamics, group sound, interaction and swing, the relation of improvisation and abstraction to the roots of jazz, and the relevance of archetypal yet freshly inflected folk forms to contemporary music. Two ensembles are heard here – Garbarek/Stenson/Rypdal/Andersen/Christensen on the exploratory Sart, and the spirited Jan Garbarek-Bobo Stenson Quartet, one of the most exciting groups of the era.
