CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem, John Surman, Dave Holland: Thimar

In stoc

1998
Anouar Brahem - oud
John Surman - saxofon sopran, bas clarinet
Dave Holland - contrabas

A strikingly attractive 'transcultural' project initiated by Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, who is both an innovator and a traditionalist in the deepest sense (he has been credited with 'restoring the sovereignty of the oud' in Tunisian music). There is no glib fusion of traditions on Thimar but rather a coming together of three very distinctive musicians who sacrifice none of their individuality in the search for common ground.

CD ECM Records Arild Andersen: The Triangle

In stoc

2003

Arild Andersen contrabas
Vassilis Tsabropoulos pian
John Marshall tobe

For a player with a background in classical music, pianist Vassilis Tsabropoulos has done wonders in the realm of jazz, and specifically improvisation. He still plays with a precise, sensitive touch and measures out dissonance in carefully metered pinches, but the tidal ebb and flow that characterizes this trio recording stands as remarkable evidence that he’s made the transition completely and elegantly. .. All three musicians on Triangle are active and forward players. John Marshall favors reinforcing the beat… Andersen, who has 15 recordings to his credit as a leader, plays with the confidence of a seasoned veteran and utilizes his deft and limber dexterity to connect the dots in counterintuitive ways.

Tabula Rasa

More than often modern music is thought that it has to sound like a toolbox descending a staircase. Pärt is the total opposite; his music burns with intense and quiet passion. It almost forces the listener into introspection and contemplation. This work is one of the marvels of the modern age and is still as captivating as when it was first released. Just like the works of the old masters that echo for centuries, this masterpiece by Arvo Pärt will echo and arouse the deepest of emotions eons after it was first released."

CD ECM Records Ghazal: The Rain

In stoc

Mai 2001
Kayhan Kalhor - kamancheh
Shujaat Husain Khan - sitar, voce
Sandeep Das - tabla

Recorded live in Berne, Switzerland, The Rain is divided into three long-form improvisations on traditional motifs, averaging 18 minutes each. “Fire” opens with a blush of sitar, a splash of sun on the well-worn path of the kamancheh’s tearful song. The expectation in Khan’s singing, indistinguishably potent through throat and string, marks that path with a mapmaker’s intuition. Khan’s voice is almost startling, providing that moment of satori on which everything hinges. Vocal cues are left intact, loosing the birds of Kalhor’s flights from their cages: signals born of moments yet predestined beyond all sense of time. In contrast, the tabla arises from the very earth, its skins mineral-rough against a backdrop of unforced biorhythms.

Pat Metheny - chitara electrica, bas electric
Lyle Mays - pian , sintetizator, orga, claviaturi
Nana Vasconcelos - tobe, percutie, voce, berimbau

This joint solo effort by Metheny and regular pianist and collaborator Lyle Mays is an impressive outing. In the process of stretching out away from the confines of the quartet setting of prior albums, Metheny and Mays presage the sleeker and more ethereal sound of the band's Geffen years on portions of the title track.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble: Mnemosyne

In stoc

1999
Jan Garbarek Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone
The Hilliard Ensemble
David James - contratenor
John Potter - tenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

A sign we are, inexplicable without pain ... .’ The words are by the nineteenth-century German poet Friedrich Holderlin, taken from Mnemosyne, one of the cryptic hymns that he wrote before descending into madness. ECM publishes the entire first strophe as a sort of legend, and the reference is telling. ‘Mnemosyne’ was the mother of the muses, and the word also means ‘memory’. For Holderlin, song was an ‘abandoned, flowing nature’, a description that fits this album beautifully.

Memory, ecstasy, pain, joy, reconciliation: all are, at one time or another, signalled in the present programme. It is very different to Officium, The Hilliard’s first collaboration with Jan Garbarek (10/94). Tenor John Potter writes that for Mnemosyne, a good deal of the repertoire ‘consists of very small amounts of material with minimal notation’. Officium was a mellifluous melding of sensual sax improvisation and early choral music; Mnemosyne embraces a wider musical world and occasionally takes a harder musical line.
Garbarek spices the English thirteenth-century Alleluia nativitatis that opens the second disc with some unexpectedly Eastern-sounding modulations.

“His sound is one of the most original and immediately recognizable on the planet,” Guitar Player magazine has noted, identified by “a majestic, echoed, singing tone with precisely articulated vibrato and nearly endless sustain, and a string-like attack via volume-pedal swells.” There is plenty of Rypdal’s signature sound on Blue in the stripped-down context of the Chasers, a band capable of being both a post-Hendrix power trio and an improvising chamber group, exploring Terje’s evocative themes.

In the mid-1970s there was no European jazz group more popular than the Garbarek-Stenson Quartet, and Witchi-Tai-To was voted ‘Record of the Year 1974/75’ in Jazz Forum’s poll. Down Beat gave the album a five-star review: “Those who think that contemporary music from Europe lacks soul-fire are hereby advised to listen to Witchi-Tai-To.” Bobo Stenson: “The quartet had a chemistry that I’ve very rarely known, and I look back at the whole period as a happy and creative time.” The wide-open programme includes tunes by Carla Bley and Don Cherry as well as the title track composed by Jim Pepper.

Characteristically broad in its stylistic range, this 1997 recording begins with a tune by Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez and ends with Duke Ellington’s “Melancholia”. In between are original contributions by Anders Jormin and Bobo Stenson and two pieces by Ornette Coleman, including the deeply-felt title track. “There is great freedom in Ornette’s melodies,” says Swedish pianist Stenson, a masterful player who subtly explores the emotional atmosphere of every tune. “In all tempos, in all keys, in all musical situations, his notes hang in the air like existential moments of coming into being.” -Jazz Times

Bill Frisell - chitara electrica
John Scofield - chitara electrica

ecmreviews:
"This sophomore effort from Marc Johnson’s Bass Desires comes nowhere near the octane levels of the project’s wild self-titled debut. This doesn’t mean, however, that Second Sight is no less enthralling. Its strength lies in its personnel. Guitarists Bill Frisell and John Scofield seem so well made for each other that, were they not split between the left and right channels, respectively, they might as well be thought of as some bizarre 12-stringed chunk of genius. How can we, for instance, not be moved by the sentiment of “Small Hands” and the resonant eddies of “Sweet Soul”? The latter, with its touch of Pat Metheny brightness, is especially moving. And let us not bypass the unassuming opener, “Crossing The Corpus Callosum.” Here the guitars dance on edge over the rolling hills of Peter Erskine’s drums and Johnson’s bass.

Zakir Hussain - tabla, conga
Trilok Gurtu - tobe si percutie

Shankar and Jan Garbarek’s previous collaboration, Vision, opened many people’s ears to the more fruitful possibilities of idiomatic blends. And while that initial project yielded a fascinating album in its own right, I always felt it lacked something I couldn’t quite articulate.

With Song For Everyone, that lack becomes clear once Trilok Gurtu and Zakir Hussain level the playing field with their earthy rhythms. In their presence, electric violin and saxophone can soar even higher, knowing there will always be a ground to return to. As if to underscore this point, Shankar also employs a drum machine, as in the delightful “Paper Nut” that inaugurates us into the album’s universe.

Martie 1988

Arvo Part: Passio Domini Nostri Jesu Christi Secundum Joannem ( 1982 )

Part's long-form The Passion of Our Lord Jesus Christ According to St. John dramatizes the apostle John's account of the arrest and crucifixion of Jesus. The form he adopts sounds as though it were centuries old, with its choral orchestration. But his choice of instruments, his choice of chords, his phrasing, and the basic construction of the piece itself are all based on 20th century ideas, most notably his own innovation, the "tintinnabuli" method. The overall sound is significantly bigger than the small ensemble performing it; this is an innovative work, despite the classic subject matter. The text is taken verbatim from the Vulgate. David James - contratenor

Pärt's 1987 release, Arbos, shows the composer working within his medium, bringing forth a body of music sacred in sound and message and presenting new compositional techniques. Utilizing a limited palette of tones, arranged in repeating patterns, these works are often (understandably) categorized with the works of Glass, Reich, and Riley. The tonal palette is often borrowed from European medieval styles, and this, in conjunction with the liturgical subject matter, make these new compositions feel centuries old. His Pari Intervello, originally scored in 1978 for wind instruments, is here recorded for solo organ. One of his more famous pieces, Stabat Mater, is presented here -- an airy piece that floats just on the threshold of awareness. Scored for vocal trio and string trio, this is a simply beautiful piece -- very expressive and lilting. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Barzakh

In stoc

1990

Anouar Brahem - oud
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Lassad Hosni - percutie

Recorded in 1990, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority. “Phenomenal…this is pure Arab music, without ‘world music’ frippery,” wrote Karl Lippegaus in Stereo. Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni, whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café. Beyond the improvisatory brilliance, Barzakh gave notice also of Brahem’s gift for writing arresting themes and luminous melody, as illustrated by “Raf Raf”, “Parfum de Gitane”, “Kerkenah” and other pieces here.

Initially published in April 1991, vinyl is reissued in October 2017 as audiophile 180g pressing.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem: Madar

1994
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Anouar Brahem - oud
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla

Despite the loveliness of these interactions, the album works best in solitary. Brahem’s contemplative solo, “Bahia,” treks over twilit mountains with aching footsteps, carrying us as if by palanquin into a vale of lost intentions. The wind of his percussiveness shakes the boughs of leafless trees and sends their dead seeds clicking to the ground like sand against a window. And in the rhythmic cast of “Jaw,” Hussain emotes lifetimes in a single beat of his tabla, thus offering some intensely lucid moments. He returns to the fold in “Qaws,” giving voice to those waiting eyes at last with solid excitement. An odd piano “Epilogue” (sounding like a chord outline for a studio track left behind) leads us out.

In stoc

1993
Egberto Gismonti - pian, chitara, flaut
Nando Carneiro - sintetizator, chitara, caxixi
Jaques Morelenbaum - violoncel
Zeca Assumpcao - bas

"The opening arpeggios of “Carmem” earn our trust at once with a timeworn and familiar comfort. The pebbles of Gismonti’s plunking notes sink into nostalgic waters, pulled by arco threads into the hands of light that loosed them.

“Bianca” picks at those same threads, frayed like the edge of a carpet in a childhood home through which pass only the ghosts of revolt. Such backward glances are ever-present in Gismonti’s world, whether they are charting the skyward paths of “Lundú #2” or dancing with joy in “Alegrinho #2.” His fingers flutter across piano keys as adeptly as they walk a fingerboard, escorting the group’s cultured sound through a gallery of moods.

Children’s feet map the gray streets of “Forró,” cracked yet held in shape like the shells of hardboiled eggs, and continue to run through “Natura, festa do interior,” a 33.5-minute masterpiece of eroded landscapes. With a sweep as cinematic as it is prosaic, it inscribes a scroll’s worth of love for all things just and familial.

Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran

Recorded in a heavily reverberant Austrian monastery, the voices sometimes develop in overwhelming waves, and Garbarek rides their crest, his soprano sax soaring in the monastery acoustic, or he underscores the voices almost unobtrusively, echoing the voices, finding ample room to move around the modal harmonies yet applying his sound sparingly.

Those with nervous metabolisms may become impatient with this undefinable music, but if you give it a chance, it will seduce you, too. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Tord Gustavsen Trio: The Other Side

In stoc

2018
Tord Gustavsen - pian
Sigurd Hole - contrabas
Jarle Vespestad - tobe

“This is the chill-out as a state of grace, and it can go as deep as you like. Sublime,” wrote the Independent on Sunday of the Gustavsen’s trio’s Being There, released in 2007.

Over the last decade Tord has explored other ensemble forms and formats, but on The Other Side - recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio in January 2018 – he opens a new chapter in his piano trio story, with faithful drummer Jarle Vespestad, and excellent new bassist Sigurd Hole. Hole’s approach to his instrument, drawing on folk influences as well as modern jazz, is ideally suited to Gustavsen’s slowly-developing, deeply melodic pieces. The album, produced by Manfred Eicher, is issued on the eve of a major tour.
