CD ECM Records Tarkovsky Quartet: Nuit Blanche

2011

Francois Couturier - pian
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon
Jean-Marc Larche - saxofon sopran

The music is as subtly strange and delicately dream-like as Tarkovsky’s films and this disc has brief, fully improvised and especially abstract pieces running through it as well as longer, more formal compositions by Couturier, a bit of Vivaldi and an anonymous piece from the 15th century. […] The group improvs, named Rêve, Dream or Traum, sometimes make more use of the other sounds the instruments can make, whether it is percussive pops from the saxophone, wiry slides from the cello or rattling and wheezing from the accordion. Their unplanned nature makes them even more dreamlike in their unexpected twists and incongruities. […] Modern cross-genre chamber music of the highest order, and full of mystery which has the listener finding new things with every play of the disc. [ Peter Bacon, London Jazz News ]

CD ECM Records Ghazal: The Rain

Mai 2001
Kayhan Kalhor - kamancheh
Shujaat Husain Khan - sitar, voce
Sandeep Das - tabla

Recorded live in Berne, Switzerland, The Rain is divided into three long-form improvisations on traditional motifs, averaging 18 minutes each. “Fire” opens with a blush of sitar, a splash of sun on the well-worn path of the kamancheh’s tearful song. The expectation in Khan’s singing, indistinguishably potent through throat and string, marks that path with a mapmaker’s intuition. Khan’s voice is almost startling, providing that moment of satori on which everything hinges. Vocal cues are left intact, loosing the birds of Kalhor’s flights from their cages: signals born of moments yet predestined beyond all sense of time. In contrast, the tabla arises from the very earth, its skins mineral-rough against a backdrop of unforced biorhythms.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Astrakan Cafe

2000

Anouar Brahem - oud
Barbaros Erkose - clarinet
Lassad Hosni - percutie

The ECM label is usually linked with a pre-world music generation of musicians who absorbed international influences into a basically Western style. Here, though, is one of its select few stars from further afield, the oud player Anouar Brahem, in a haunting album of quiet, concentrated and poetic duos and trios with the Turkish clarinettist Barbaros Erköse and percussionist Lassad Hosni. The café of the title is symbolic of both transience and rootedness. Pace, rhythm and colour emerge from these simple resources, lightly poised and often catchy, though there are some heady improvisations and an arresting start as Erköse phrases his unaccompanied line with the sensitivity of a hushed voice.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble: Mnemosyne

1999
Jan Garbarek Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone
The Hilliard Ensemble
David James - contratenor
John Potter - tenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

A sign we are, inexplicable without pain ... .’ The words are by the nineteenth-century German poet Friedrich Holderlin, taken from Mnemosyne, one of the cryptic hymns that he wrote before descending into madness. ECM publishes the entire first strophe as a sort of legend, and the reference is telling. ‘Mnemosyne’ was the mother of the muses, and the word also means ‘memory’. For Holderlin, song was an ‘abandoned, flowing nature’, a description that fits this album beautifully.

Memory, ecstasy, pain, joy, reconciliation: all are, at one time or another, signalled in the present programme. It is very different to Officium, The Hilliard’s first collaboration with Jan Garbarek (10/94). Tenor John Potter writes that for Mnemosyne, a good deal of the repertoire ‘consists of very small amounts of material with minimal notation’. Officium was a mellifluous melding of sensual sax improvisation and early choral music; Mnemosyne embraces a wider musical world and occasionally takes a harder musical line.
Garbarek spices the English thirteenth-century Alleluia nativitatis that opens the second disc with some unexpectedly Eastern-sounding modulations.

The Hilliard Ensemble :

David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Steven Harrold - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

The English four-man Hilliard Ensemble weaves a gorgeous polyphonic patchwork of warm colors from countertenor, tenor and baritone voices on English carols and motets dating from the 15th century. Enchanting rather than narcotizing, the ancient choral music replenishes itself through the quartet’s interpretative finesse. [ Frank-John Hadley, DownBeat ]

1987
Gidon Kremer - vioara

Thomas Demenga - violoncel
Brass Ensemble Staatsorchester Stuttgart
The Hilliard Ensemble
Dennis Russell Davies - dirijor
Susan Bickley - alto
Lynne Dawson - soprana
David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Christopher Bowers-Broadbent - orga

Pärt's 1987 release, Arbos, shows the composer working within his medium, bringing forth a body of music sacred in sound and message and presenting new compositional techniques. Utilizing a limited palette of tones, arranged in repeating patterns, these works are often (understandably) categorized with the works of Glass, Reich, and Riley. The tonal palette is often borrowed from European medieval styles, and this, in conjunction with the liturgical subject matter, make these new compositions feel centuries old. His Pari Intervello, originally scored in 1978 for wind instruments, is here recorded for solo organ. One of his more famous pieces, Stabat Mater, is presented here -- an airy piece that floats just on the threshold of awareness. Scored for vocal trio and string trio, this is a simply beautiful piece -- very expressive and lilting. [ AllMusic ]

1974
John Abercrombie - chitara
Jan Hammer - orga, sintetizatoare, pian
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

This evergreen stands tall in the ECM forest. There is no sense of competition, only mutual reveling in a distinctly nuclear sound. One could easily call it fusion, but if anything it is fused with itself, for it has created every element it seeks to combine. Timeless indeed.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Barzakh

1990

Anouar Brahem - oud
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Lassad Hosni - percutie

Recorded in 1990, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority. “Phenomenal…this is pure Arab music, without ‘world music’ frippery,” wrote Karl Lippegaus in Stereo. Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni, whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café. Beyond the improvisatory brilliance, Barzakh gave notice also of Brahem’s gift for writing arresting themes and luminous melody, as illustrated by “Raf Raf”, “Parfum de Gitane”, “Kerkenah” and other pieces here.

Initially published in April 1991, vinyl is reissued in October 2017 as audiophile 180g pressing.

2016

Carolin Widmann - vioara
Chamber Orchestra of Europe

Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy - Concerto For Violin And Orchestra Op. 64
Robert Schumann - Violin Concerto Op.23

Certainly, the Concerto finds Schumann staring into the abyss, but its slow movement, in particular, has an otherworldly atmosphere that is profoundly affecting. Carolin Widmann and the Chamber Orchestra of Europe give a deeply-felt account of it, and are no less expressive in the beautiful second subject of the opening movement. CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble: Officium Novum

2009
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
The Hilliard Ensemble :
David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Steven Harrold - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

In addition to several medieval sources, included are works by early 20th century Armenian priest, musicologist, and composer Komitas; Nikolai N. Kedrov, a Russian composer of the same era; mid-20th century Greek composer Giorgios Sefaris; Estonian Arvo Part; and several original pieces by Garbarek himself. Like the first album, this one is suffused with a sense of distant mystery and a profound, powerful melancholy that is given voice with intense feeling. The sound again is spacious and warmly resonant, with an earthy, enveloping ambience. This album will be a must-have for anyone who loved the first one, and it should appeal to any listener with an affinity for meditative Eastern European spirituality, especially when tied to contemporary expressivity and stylistic freedom. 1997

Stephan Micus - Voice, Bolombatto, Steel Drums, Sinding, Bowed Sinding, Suling, Percussion, Shakuhachi, Nay, Tin Whistle

This extraordinary multi-instrumentalist is actually one of the few to have grasped in its essence what was the song of the world. With him there exist no territories or cultural atavisms, but a planetary polyphony projected on a horizon of eternity. His instruments exchange once more the out-lines of their countries of origin to become instruments without nationality in the hands of this nomad musician. Exceptional.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Implosions

1977

Stephan Micus - Sitars, Acoustic Guitar, Vocal, Bavarian Zithers, Shakuhachi, Sho, Thai Flute, Rabab

Although Micus has most often crafted albums at his home studio and sent them to Eicher for mixing and mastering, earlier ones such as this were recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where many of ECM’s formative releases were also realized. The studio dynamics imbue these travels with a rather different intimacy, one which brings its own climate and bounces back sunlight like the moon. Three Bavarian zithers, each with its own signature, form a dense and percussive bed for Micus’s singing in “Borkenkind.” His floating transpositions trail sutras of memory, spinning from them a yarn of forgetting. This becomes the sole purpose of the music: to detach oneself from the snares of fame and recognition until only the sound and the ear are left to dance unhindered. And indeed, when Micus sings again in “For M’schr And Djingis Khan,” accompanied by the uncut diamond of the rabab (Afghani lute), he balances on a tipping point into infinity, his mouth filled with empty pages. 1984

Shankar - vioara dubla cu 10 corzi, drum machine
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Zakir Hussain - tabla, conga
Trilok Gurtu - tobe si percutie

Shankar and Jan Garbarek’s previous collaboration, Vision, opened many people’s ears to the more fruitful possibilities of idiomatic blends. And while that initial project yielded a fascinating album in its own right, I always felt it lacked something I couldn’t quite articulate.

With Song For Everyone, that lack becomes clear once Trilok Gurtu and Zakir Hussain level the playing field with their earthy rhythms. In their presence, electric violin and saxophone can soar even higher, knowing there will always be a ground to return to. As if to underscore this point, Shankar also employs a drum machine, as in the delightful “Paper Nut” that inaugurates us into the album’s universe.

“Jan Garbarek is my favorite sax player,” Miroslav Vitous has said. “We have an incredible musical rapport and you can hear it. He understands my Slavic melodies and what I use for atmosphere because he’s European and his father was Polish, which is very close to me. I’m from Czechoslovakia. Our musical communication is astonishing: we each sense what the other is about to play.” Atmos, recorded 1992, features seven compositions by Vitous and two freely improvised pieces, yet sounds like the product of a shared mind, so well-matched are the expressive approaches of bassist and saxophonist.

Stephan Micus shapes his music by taking the instruments of the world out of their cultural, historical or traditional contexts and blending them in new ways. The colours of To The Evening Child are established through instrumental combinations involving dilruba (a string instrument associated with Hindustani classical music), suling (reed flute of the Balinese gamelan orchestra), nay (end-blown flute of the Middle East), sinding (West African harp), kortholt (German renaissance reed instrument) and steel drum (associated with West Indian calypso). “This music sounds in those hushed spaces where the universe inhales, the sound that keeps all celestial bodies spinning” – Tyran Grillo, Between Sound and Space

The spare, gently unfolding and intensely atmospheric melodies and moods deliver an invitation to listen with open ears … and to dream. Gary Peacock’s recordings of the 1980s are production projects on which great players convened to play the bassist’s tunes. And the bass is fully a lead voice here, with title piece Guamba a Peacock solo to open the proceedings. As Paul Bley once said, “Gary is one of those rare musicians you could always count on to play better than you.” Nonetheless, there are mighty contributions from saxophone, trumpet and drums, with Jan Garbarek in particularly strong form. Jazz Forum: “Garbarek plays with magisterial power here.” Recorded 1987.
