CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian - J.S. Bach: Six Suites For Viola Solo

2018

Kim Kashkashian - viola

J.S. Bach : Six Suites For Viola Solo ( BWV 1007-1012 )

The poetry and radiance of Bach’s cello suites (BWV 1007-1012) are transfigured in these remarkable interpretations by Kim Kashkashian on viola, offering “a different kind of sombreness, a different kind of dazzlement” as annotator Paul Griffiths observes. One of the most compelling performers of classical and new music, Kashkashian has been hailed by The San Francisco Chronicle as "an artist who combines a probing, restless musical intellect with enormous beauty of tone." An ECM artist since 1985, she approaches Bach’s music with the same commitment as revealed in her other solo recordings, the legendary Hindemith sonatas album and the widely acclaimed (and Grammy-winning) account of Kurtág and Ligeti.

CD ECM Records Tarkovsky Quartet: Nuit Blanche

2011

Francois Couturier - pian
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon
Jean-Marc Larche - saxofon sopran

The music is as subtly strange and delicately dream-like as Tarkovsky’s films and this disc has brief, fully improvised and especially abstract pieces running through it as well as longer, more formal compositions by Couturier, a bit of Vivaldi and an anonymous piece from the 15th century. […] The group improvs, named Rêve, Dream or Traum, sometimes make more use of the other sounds the instruments can make, whether it is percussive pops from the saxophone, wiry slides from the cello or rattling and wheezing from the accordion. Their unplanned nature makes them even more dreamlike in their unexpected twists and incongruities. […] Modern cross-genre chamber music of the highest order, and full of mystery which has the listener finding new things with every play of the disc. [ Peter Bacon, London Jazz News ]

CD ECM Records John Surman: Road To Saint Ives

1990
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet, claviaturi, percutie

Although we might feel tempted to take Road To Saint Ives, one of John Surman’s most stunning solo albums to date, as a portrait of its titular coastal town, Surman states in his liner notes that such is not the case. Aside from the peppering of folk-inspired melodies in the soprano solos, the music breaks its own ground on the way toward unique improvisatory continents.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Anthem

2000
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

Operating somewhere between contemporary classical and jazz, ... Towner occupies a unique niche in jazz. Known for his carneo on Weather Report’s 1972 album I Sing The Body Electric and work with the classical crossover group Oregon and countless ECM luminaries, he is perhaps best loved for his solo recitals, of which Anthem is the latest – and it’s a gem. There’s a pair of jazz standards, but the majority of the mesmerising set comprises original 12-string and classical guitar pieces, aching, ruminative sketches and developed compositions of such emotional vividness and musical detail that they hardly seem to be the work of one man. The music tugs at the listener’s attention and, with breathtaking balance and control, is always compelling. The acoustic guitar has never sounded better, and neither has this amazing guitar player. CD ECM Records Anat Fort Trio + Gianluigi Trovesi: Birdwatching

2016

Anat Fort - pian
Gary Wang - contrabas
Roland Schneider - tobe
Gianluigi Trovesi - clarinet alto

Listening to this album for the first time, I was slightly thrown by the alto clarinet. Not a familiar voice like the soprano or bass clarinet, hearing over the course of full album took a little time to fully appreciate the range and nuances of the instrument, and assimilate Trovesi's musical language and tone. Playing with a bitter sweet sound, the clarinettist will colour and manipulate his sound, interpreting the written score and reacting to the rhythm section as if he too were a regular fixture of the ensemble. […] Anat is not one to wear her heart on her sleeve, but that does not lessen the emotional content of her music. Close listening reveals a sharp mind at work with each idea presented without any excess baggage, just lean and lithe lines that make their meaning felt succinctly before moving on. […] A captivating set that reveals an original voice continuing to grow. It will be interesting to hear how the Anat Fort Trio continue their journey, and I for one would relish the prospect of a solo album from this gifted enthralling pianist. [ Nick Lea, Jazz Views ]

1983

Paul McCandless - instrumente cu ancie, flaut
Glen Moore - contrabas, vioara, pian
Ralph Towner - chitara, pian, sintetizator
Collin Walcott - sitar, percutie, voce

ecmreviews: "By the time of this self-titled ECM debut, the collective known as Oregon had firmly established its uncategorizable sound on a host of recordings for Vanguard. From the cover photograph, which stands as one of the more confounding choices in ECM history, those unfamiliar with Oregon would probably never guess that the music it sleeves could be so ethereal. Oregon finds the group still in its original incarnation with Paul McCandless, Ralph Towner, Glen Moore, and Collin Walcott (in one of his last sessions with the group before his life was tragically ended in a 1984 car crash).

Ketil Bjornstad -pian
David Darling - violoncel

"Bjørnstad’s love of aquatic themes stretches an ideal surface tension across which Darling may unfurl his sails. The delicate ostinato of one becomes the leviathan drone of the other, drawing threads through opaque expanse (just as Swiss-born artist Mayo Bucher has placed a white edge through this and select other ECM cover paintings). Keith Jarrett - pian

This live solo piano concert at Tokyo's Suntory Hall is not a solo concert in the usual freewheeling Jarrett sense. Rather, it sounds like a formal recital of individual compositions, each followed by applause (unlike the improvised concerts where applause only comes at the end of a set).

CD ECM Records Valery Afanassiev - Franz Schubert: Moments Musicaux

2010

Valery Afanassiev - pian

Pianist Valery Afanassiev – renowned for his strikingly individual and deeply introspective interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert – has paired two often extrovert works by the composer: the set of six Moments Musicaux and the Sonata D. 850. Recorded in September 2010 at the Auditorio Radiotelevisione Svizzera, Lugano, this is ECM’s second Schubert recording by the Moscow-born pianist, having previously released a live recording of Afanassiev performing Schubert’s final Sonata D. 960 at the 1986 Lockenhaus Festival that has become a connoisseur’s favourite.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett - Bach: Goldberg Variations

1989

Keith Jarrett - clavecin

Johann Sebastian Bach : Goldberg Variations BWV 988

in one of his earlier recorded voyages into the classical world, Keith Jarrett is up against an imposing legacy as he tackles what has become the most famous set of variations in Western music. First, he chooses to play them on a double-manual harpsichord -- which makes the task somewhat easier, avoiding the finger-tangling cross hand difficulties that can trip up a piano performance. Second, he doesn't seem to treat the Goldbergs as a single cycle, inserting pauses between each variation to create 30 little pieces, bookended by the two renditions of the aria (which is perfectly acceptable). He's not in any hurry, not tempted to showboat or flaunt his considerable technique -- and in no way does this jazz pianist try to make the variations swing a la Jacques Loussier. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Barre Phillips, Mat Maneri: Angles Of Repose

2004

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor
Barre Phillips - contrabas
Mat Maneri - viola

Joe Maneri, the eccentric, free-improvising saxophonist and pianist continues his long partnership with his son, Mat, a violinist. It’s a relationship that has been deepened by the duo’s collaborations with that great American double-bass player, Barre Phillips. Phillips’ technique and ear allow him to adapt readily to the Maneris’ fondness for lurking in the dangerous territories between the notes in the traditional western scale. Mat Maneri often plays an electric violin, and is frequently tumultuously energetic with it, but he restricts himself to viola on this session, and the set is entirely acoustic. …
A conversation between uncompromising equals, full of demanding but absorbing detail.

CD ECM Records Andy Sheppard: Movements In Colour

2009
Andy Sheppard - saxofoane
John Parricelli - chitara
Eivind Aarset - chitara, electronice
Arild Andersen - contrabas
Kuljit Bhamra - tabla, percutie

Although Andy Sheppard has been featured on a dozen albums with Carla Bley for WATT, this is his first album for ECM proper. The British saxophonist heads an international quintet in a programme of self-penned pieces, all buoyant and strongly melodic.

Sheppard’s elegant saxophone and the strongly-contrasting guitars of Parricelli and Aarset are lifted up by the rhythmic drive of Arild Andersen’s muscular bass and the crisp, dynamic tabla of Kuljit Bhamra, a musician well known in the UK as a key figure in the Asian pop and bhangra movements.

CD ECM Records Gary Peacock Trio: Tangents

2017

Gary Peacock - contrabas
Marc Copland - pian
Joey Baron - tobe

Some of Gary Peacock’s finest music has been made in piano trios. Early in his musical life, Peacock established a fresh role for the bass as an independent melodic voice, a concept carried forward in the history-making groups he’s played with – from Paul Bley’s Bill Evans’s trios to Keith Jarrett’s. As a bandleader he has also been influential: Tangents is the second release from the great bassist’s trio with Marc Copland and Joey Baron and draws on years of shared playing in diverse contexts. All three band members contribute compositions, Peacock’s including “December Greenwings”, revisiting a piece Gary introduced on his ECM recording December Poems. Repertoire includes five tunes from Peacock, two from Baron, one from Copland, and an outstanding group improvisation, “Empty Forest”. The trio also plays Miles Davis’s “Blue In Green” and, perhaps surprisingly, Alex North’s theme for the film Spartacus, which also proves a fine vehicle for improvising.

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava: New York Days

2008

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Stefano Bollani - pian
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Larry Grenadier - contrabas
Paul Motian - tobe

In assessing Enrico Rava's lengthy career, while it is clear that he is still reaching for the unattainable, in recent years the Italian trumpeter's context has been considerably more centrist. Easy Living (ECM, 2004) and The Words and the Days (ECM, 2007) were undeniably mainstream, albeit with an unmistakable European and, at times, Mediterranean bent. New York Days teams Rava and pianist Stefano Bollani—last heard in duet on the marvelous The Third Man (ECM, 2008)—together with perennially underrated tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, increasingly ubiquitous bassist FLY and drum icon Paul Motian for a set of nine originals and two free improvisations that, like The Third Man combine innate lyricism and swing with some of Rava's freest playing in years. CD ECM Records Anja Lechner, Pablo Marquez - Franz Schubert: Die Nacht

2018

Anja Lechner - violoncel
Pablo Marquez - chitara

Friedrich Burgmüller, Franz Schubert

German cellist Anja Lechner and Argentinean guitarist Pablo Márquez met in 2003 and have since explored the most diverse repertoire and modes of expression in their concerts. For their first duo album, a conceptual context is provided by the strong tradition of songs with guitar accompaniment prevalent in 19th century Vienna, as Lechner and Márquez play some of Schubert’s most beloved songs (including Die Nacht, Nacht und Träume and Der Leiermann), elegantly framing the album’s centrepiece: Schubert’s expansive ‘Arpeggione’ sonata. Many of Schubert’s songs were published in alternative versions with guitar during the composer’s lifetime; in some cases, the guitar version appeared even before the one for piano.

CD ECM Records Avishai Cohen: Cross My Palm With Silver

2017

Avishai Cohen - trompeta
Yonathan Avishai - pian
Barak Mori - contrabas
Nasheet Waits - tobe

If trumpeter Avishai Cohen's ECM debut, Into The Silence was a work of deeply personal content, Cross My Palm With Silver plays out with the same emotional impact, but on a global stage. Cohen composed the five pieces on this album in his native Israel, while contemplating the impact of political division on the human psyche. His hope is that the music contributes to a healing process. [ AllAboutJazz ]
