CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Simple Acoustic Trio

2005
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

These three young Poles are known to ECM listeners worldwide for their sensitive playing in the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. In their homeland, however, they are also have a strong reputation as an autonomous group.

Their first international release shows why. With a wide-open repertoire that intersperses original material with interpretations of pieces by Björk, Wayne Shorter and Szymanowski, Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz bring something new to the piano trio tradition.

JazzTimes:
Stanko has never had a piano player like Virelles. When his moments came, he configured his own lyrical domain within the world of a Stanko song. For that matter, Stanko has never had a bassist and drummer like Rogers and Cleaver, with their hard edges and their volatile energy.”

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko Septet: Litania - Music Of Krzystof Komeda

1997

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Bernt Rosengren - saxofon tenor
Joakim Milder - saxofon tenor si sopran
Bobo Stenson - pian
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe
Terje Rypdal - guitar

Krzysztof Komeda (1931-1969) wrote music for more than 40 films, including classics of the Polish cinema by Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda, and Polanski brought him to Hollywood to work on Rosemary's Baby. His soundtrack music, however, was only part of his achievement. Komeda almost singelehandedly instigated the modern jazz movement in Poland and made important contributions toward the shaping of a European aesthetic in jazz composition. Tomasz Stanko was Komeda's closest musical associate. At ECM's urging, Stanko returned to the archive to reinvestigate Komeda's work, rearranging both his intensely melodic film themes and his extended compositions for an all-star Scandinavian band.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko Quartet: Leosia

1997

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Tony Oxley - tobe

The second ECM album from this Polish-Swedish-British edition of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet follows the critically-heralded Matka Joanna. As Jazz Journal wrote, 'Trumpeter Stanko's vibrant breadth of tone and poetic feeling for cross-rhythmic drama are second to none.' Leosia marks a further progression, incorporating six first-rate Stanko compositions in his brooding 'Slavic' style, darker than the darkest Miles (and incorporating a tribute to Lautréamont, literature's Count of Darkness), as well as bracing and exploratory duo and trio improvisations, and solos of the higherst calibre by all concerned. The group has an unusual claim on idiomatic completeness; it seems to summarize, in highly original manner, many of the important developments of jazz of the last 30 years. Stanko, however, distances himself from the general drift toward reinterpretation of standards in the 1990s. His bent notes, slurs, smears and violent fanfares are put to the service of a new group music.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko: From The Green Hill

1999

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
John Surman - saxofon bariton, bas clarinet
Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Michelle Makarski - vioara
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

After his critical and popular success with Litania, revitalizing the music of his countryman Komeda, Poland's Stanko, possessor of perhaps the darkest trumpet sound in jazz, resurfaces here in quite a different context, with associates from everywhere. Bandeonista from Argentina, reedman from England's south coast, classical violinist from Detroit, bassist from Sweden. Only veteran Norwegian drummer Jon Christensen is retained from the Litania session, although a sense of continuity is maintained by Saulzzi, who brings a wistful regret to his interpretation of a Komeda theme. Otherwise Stanko and John Surman share composer credits as well as the special understanding that belongs only to the most lyrical improvisers.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko Quintet: Dark Eyes

2009

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Alexi Tuomarila - pian
Jakob Bro - chitara
Anders Christensen - contrabas
Olavi Louhivuori - tobe

Stanko likes to draw his inspirations from various artistic corners. And that is good to know. But one can just listen to this storyteller and imagine his or her own fantasy, draw from this music what one would like that relates to their own life or lives. It is a continuing marvel to realize how this veteran of the European jazz scene keeps coming up with new players to help him realize his evocative and truly different musical visions, visions that combine the freewheeling jazz aesthetic with his more composerly, mysterious elements of composition. CD ECM Records Sam Rivers: Contrasts

1979

Sam Rivers - saxofon tenor si sopran, flaut
George Lewis - trombon
Dave Holland - contrabas
Thurman Barker - tobe

AllMusic: "Tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers (also heard on soprano and flute) teams up in a quartet with trombonist George Lewis, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Thurman Barker (doubling on marimba) for a date that certainly defies the stereotype of a typical ECM session. The seven Rivers originals, although sometimes having colorful melodies, are quite complex. However, the intriguing and very alert interplay between the brilliant musicians makes the music seem fairly logical and worth exploring by adventurous listeners. "

CD ECM Records Gary Burton: Seven Songs For Quartet & Chamber Orchestra

1973

Gary Burton - vibrafon
Michael Goodrick - chitara
Steve Swallow - bas
Ted Seibs - tobe

ecmreviews:
"If one were to draw a line between the ensemble aesthetics of Eberhard Weber and Keith Jarrett, then one might plot the compositions of orchestral jazz legend Mike Gibbs somewhere along the way. Born in 1937 in what was then Southern Rhodesia, and a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Gibbs has laid down a musical path as diverse as his travels. On Seven Songs for Chamber Orchestra, one gains vision of a mind looking not so much to cross over into uncharted waters as to expand the inclusivity of jazz’s already broad topography. At the heart of this project is Gibbs’s most famous student, the inimitable Gary Burton, who presents a lovingly realized program of his mentor’s own design.

CD ECM Records Stefano Battaglia Trio: Songways

2013

Stefano Battaglia - pian
Salvatore Maiore - contrabas
Roberto Dani - tobe

Italian pianist Stefano Battaglia and his trio develop directions established on their acclaimed 2011 release “The River of Anyder” with a new selection of chants, hymns and dances, all written by Battaglia and inspired by descriptions of visionary places from art and literature – from Alfred Kubin, Jonathan Swift or Charles Fourier to Italo Calvino. “Songways” finds “a new harmonic balance between archaic modal pre-tonal chant and dances, pure tonal songs and hymns and abstract texture,” Battgalia says, “thus documenting the natural development of the Trio life, with a larger space for action from the drums”.

A direct and accessible statement brimming with musical riches, „The River of Anyder“ rests on an entirely different plane to Battaglia’s earlier, riskier ECM output. In using this most classic of instrumental formats, he has created a brilliant benchmark that should catapult his career onwards and upwards. [ Fred Grand, Jazz Journal ]

CD ECM Records Stefano Battaglia Trio: In The Morning - Music Of Alec Wilder

2015

Stefano Battaglia - pian
Salvatore Maiore - contrabas
Roberto Dani - tobe

Piano trios are becoming something of a speciality within the Italian jazz fraternity and now reaching the venerable age of fifty, leader and pianist Stefano Battaglia demonstrates why he is one of the leading exponents in both his country and on the European continent with this live recording from the Teatro Vittoria in Turin in April 2014. […] Battaglia is very much his own man and devotes the album to an exploration of one of the major, yet lesser known composers of what has become known as the great American songbook in Alec Wilder […] once again an ECM recording of distinction with impeccable sound as ever. Without exception, he approaches each piece reverentially, coaxing out its harmonies with classical precision. His is an undemonstrative style of playing, with rarely any flourish or excess but with considerable hypnotic allure, and in places, great beauty. [ Simon Adams, Jazz Journal ]

CD ECM Records Harrison Birtwistle: Chamber Music

2014

Amy Freston - soprana
Roderick Williams - bariton
Lisa Batiashvili - vioara
Adrian Brendel - violoncel
Till Fellner - pian

Whatever the medium and the accretions of tradition you might expect a composer of Birtwistle’s independence of mind to react against - in composing a piano trio, for example – he finds something fresh to say and an accommodation for his intensely personal vision of the world. […] Roderick Williams is very fine in ‘Bogenstrich’ and the three instrumentalists, quite closely recorded, are in a class any composer would die for.

Franz Liszt - Années de pèlerinage, Première année - Suisse
Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata No. 32 in c minor op. 111

Speaking to the New York Times in 2007, Alfred Brendel said of fellow pianist Till Fellner: “It has impressed me how ambitiously he has developed his repertory, being equally at home in solo and concerto repertoire, chamber music and lieder… I heard him do the best live performance of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage”. Fellner’s insightful playing of the Premiere année from that collection of suites, underlines the contention, vividly conveying Franz Liszt’s literal and imaginative journeys.

CD ECM Records Andrew Cyrille, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Frisell: Lebroba

2018

Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Wadada Leo Smith - trompeta
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica

Andrew Cyrille’s title Lebroba is a contraction of Leland, Brooklyn and Baltimore, birthplaces of the protagonists of an album bringing together three of creative music’s independent thinkers.

A generous leader, Cyrille gives plenty of room to his cohorts, and all three musicians bring in compositions, with “Turiya”, Wadada’s elegant dedication to Alice Coltrane, unfurling slowly over its 17-minute duration. In his own pieces, including the title track and the closing “Pretty Beauty”, Cyrille rarely puts the focus on the drums, preferring to play melodically and interactively, sensitive to pitch and to space. There are references to West African music and the blues as well as the history of jazz drumming, but Cyrille’s priority today is an elliptical style in which meter is implied rather than stated.

CD ECM Records Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The Declaration Of Music Independence

2016

Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica
Richard Teitelbaum - pian, sintetizator
Ben Street - bas

A version of John Coltrane’s ‘Coltrane Time’ kicks things off with a snare pattern Cyrille learned from Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali – which he sustains while the others float rhythmically and arhythmically around him. Frisell’s melancholy ‘Kaddish’ rings quietly on over Cyrille’s far-distant mallets, Street’s ‘Say’ resembles a slow pop ballad, and ‘Dazzling (Perchordally Yours)’ is built around alternations of single chord-hits and silences, the players reacting to the resonances. It all swings without regular swing, sounding fluently melodic, though much of it is cell-like and episodic.

2016

Ben Monder - chitara electrica
Pete Rende - sintetizator
Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Paul Motian - tobe

Ben Monder may be the most listened to jazz guitarist at the moment, thanks to his being on David Bowie’s swansong, ‘Blackstar’. […] It’s clear here why Monder’s playing appealed to Bowie: he uses his electric guitar to create otherworldly, sometimes disturbing, soundscapes, some of which even have sci-fi titles such as ‘Gamma Crucis’ and ‘Triffids’. What melody there is serves as a basis for free improvisation, heavy on the reverb. It has the intensity of hard rock, yet the mood is ponderous, abstract and hazy. [ Chris Pearson, The Times ]

CD ECM Records Steve Swallow Quintet: Into The Woodwork

2012

Steve Swallow - bas
Chris Cheek - saxofon tenor
Steve Cardenas - chitara
Carla Bley - orga
Jorge Rossy - tobe

In the press sheet for Steve Swallow's Into the Woodwork, the award-winning electric bassist is quoted, saying: "Good humor before and after the red light goes on is very important. Music-making should be fun, after all." [...]

Into the Woodwork may lack the visuals, but it's clear that this quintet is having just as much fun, and is comfortable enough together to allow anything to happen—albeit within the structures of Swallow's writing. Other than life/music partner Carla Bley—focusing solely on organ and begging the question why she doesn't do so more often—this is a new constellation under the Swallow marquee, but guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Chris Cheek have intersected before, both with each other and with Swallow and Bley, in Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, respectively.
