CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad, Terje Rypdal: The Sea

1995
Ketil Bjornstad - pian
David Darling - violoncel
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Jon Christensen - tobe

"The twelve parts that comprise The Sea are of a proportion far beyond aquatic, for their magic lies in the hands and hearts of four musicians who came together for a session as ever-changing as its namesake. The number would seem to be significant: months in a year, hours in a day, each a cycle rendered timeless through a story that bleeds and weeps. David Darling’s trembling cello lets out the first cry, eddying with all the force of nature at the edge of a bow. " [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Billy Hart, Ethan Iverson Quartet: All Our Reasons

2011

Billy Hart - tobe
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Ben Street - contrabas
Ethan Iverson - pian

First ECM recording of a quartet formed in 2003. Originally billed as the Ethan Iverson-Mark Turner Quartet, it soon became the Billy Hart Quartet, and under this name has played shows to packed houses each year in New York City. The group’s first album for hard-bop label High Note in 2005 figured on many critics’ best-of-the year list. Since then, the ensemble’s music has gotten more free and spacious, a sensibility that aligns perfectly with ECM.

CD ECM Records Billy Hart / Ethan Iverson Quartet: One Is The Other

2013

Billy Hart - tobe
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Ben Street - contrabas
Ethan Iverson - pian

The second ECM album by the Billy Hart Quartet is a major musical statement, and one of the outstanding jazz albums of the season. The group’s reach – already broad on 2011’s widely-acclaimed All Our Reasons – is yet more expansive here. Strong compositions – by leader-drummer Hart, tenorist Mark Turner and pianist Ethan Iverson – reflect upon a wide swathe of the music’s history, and are distinguished by vivid and imaginative solos and wonderful interplay.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner / Paolo Fresu: Chiaroscuro

2008
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, chitara cu 12 corzi, chitara bariton
Paolo Fresu - trompeta, flugelhorn

Acoustic guitar and trumpet aren’t an ordinary combination, and Chiaroscuso is, aptly, an extraordinary album. Ralph Towner, a reflective man’s guitar hero for four decades, has paired with young Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu. Fresu floats pure, vibrato-less lines through Towner’s harmonic webs on classical, 12-string and baritone guitars. Towner revisits his early “Wistful Thinking” and has written such new beauties as “Sacred Place”, which evokes the cinematic richness of Ennio Morricone. Fresu channels Miles Davis on an impressionistic cover of “Blue in Green. [ Bradley Bambarger, The Star-Ledger ]

CD ECM Records Paolo Fresu & Daniele di Bonaventura: In Maggiore

2015
Paolo Fresu - trompeta, flugelhorn
Daniele di Bonaventura - bandoneon

"Sardinian-born trumpeter Paolo Fresu and bandoneonist Daniele di Bonaventura from Fermo, Italy, indicated the depth of their musical understanding on 2011's 'Mistico Mediterraneo', a collaboration with Corsican singers A Filetta. On 'In maggiore', left to their own resources, they explore a very broad range of material.

This includes original ballads by both players, improvisations, a theme from Puccini's La Boheme, liturgical music, pieces by legendary Chilean songwriter Victor Jara and Uruguayan singer-songwriter Jaime Roos, music of Neapolitan composer Ernersto de Curtis, 'O que sera' by Brazil's Chico Buarque and more. CD ECM Records Marc Sinan: Fasil

2008

Marc Sinan
Julia Hulsmann - pian
Yelena Kuljic - voce
Lena Thies - violoncel
Marc Muellbauer - contrabas
Heinrich Kbberling - tobe

ecmreview:
"Guitarist and composer Marc Sinan, recently of the (sadly) European-only release Hasretim, made his ECM debut with Fasıl, an album of enduring originality and refinement. The title refers to a suite form used in both classical and modern Ottoman ensemble music, and which here would seem to nod in both directions. It’s almost unfortunate that the Turkish word should so closely resemble the English “facile,” for the music here is anything but superficial. By way of comparison, one might pair it with Jon Balke’s SIWAN, as Balke illuminates and draws out likeminded ethnomusical connections with care.

Marc Sinan’s third ECM release is an evocative duo album with Oğuz Büyükberber which subtly covers a lot of ground. CD ECM Records Stefano Bollani Trio: Stone In The Water

2009

Stefano Bollani - pian
Jesper Bodilsen - contrabas
Morten Lund - tobe

Stone in the Water is one of Italian pianist Stefano Bollani’s most beautiful albums. It’s also one of his gentlest, in writing and arrangement. The improvisations have more heft and energy. In both modes, the young player maintains his signature intensity. … A lovely document by an exemplary trio. [ Michael J. West, Jazz Times ]

CD ECM Records Stefano Bollani: Piano Solo

2006

Stefano Bollani - pian

“Piano solo” is a modest title for this encylopaedic recital that romps through the history of jazz and more, and which, in its rapid-fire, quick-witted turnover of ideas, reveals a unique musical personality. Italian pianist Bollani (born 1972) is a major talent, armed with prodigious technique. A taste of this will already have been gleaned from his contributions to Enrico Rava’s “Easy Living” and “Tati” but here his imagination roams widely indeed. Bollani plays a Scott Joplin rag, improvises freely, plays tango music from the early 20th century, plays standards, plays his own compositions. He plays the Beach Boys’ “Don’t Talk” and tunes made famous by Louis Armstrong and Nat King Cole. He improvises on a theme from Prokofiev’s First Piano Concerto... And: he makes this whirlwind journey through the genres seem both logical and necessary.

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava, Stefano Bollani: The Third Man

2007

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Stefano Bollani - pian

They have been playing together since the early 1990s, Bollani hailing trumpeter Rava as his mentor, and Rava regarding Bollani as “perhaps the most gifted pianist since Art Tatum”. After Rava’s highly acclaimed “Easy Living” (quintet featuring Bollani) and the Rava/Bollani/Paul Motian collaboration “Tati”, comes this superb duo set, recorded in Lugano in November 2006. Here is marvellous linear playing and melodies plucked from the air, two master improvisers making freely lyrical jazz together – inspired by jazz history, South American music (an important source for both musicians), the Italian song tradition, contemporary composition and more, all developed, under Manfred Eicher’s supervision, into a unique programme. The repertoire includes compositions by each of the protagonists, two takes of Antonio Carlos Jobim’s famous ballad “Retrato Em Branco Y Preto”, a reinvention of “Estate” by the Italian singer Bruno Martino (whose own inspirations included Neapolitan folk song as well as jazz ) and spontaneous –yet profoundly melodic – free improvisation on the title track.

CD ECM Records Stephano Bollani Trio + Mark Turner, Bill Frisell: Joy In Spite Of Everything

Iunie 2013

Stefano Bollani - pian
Jesper Bodilsen - contrabas
Morten Lund - tobe

Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica

AllMusic:
"On Joy in Spite of Everything, Italian pianist Stefano Bollani reconvened his longstanding trio with drummer Morten Lund and bassist Jesper Bodilsen. They recorded three previous dates together, the most recent being 2009's excellent Stone in the Water on ECM. Bollani has continually displayed -- from his dates with mentor Enrico Rava, on solo offerings, and with other leaders, that his playing and composing signatures are not only versatile and Catholic in their approach to jazz, but informed equally by the building blocks and possibilities of song itself. To that end, he has added two more players to this date, guitarist Bill Frisell and saxophonist Mark Turner. The group performs on these tunes not only as a quintet, but in various quartets, trios, and duets.

CD ECM Records Mark Turner Quartet: Lathe Of Heaven

2013
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Avishai Cohen - trompeta
Joe Martin - contrabas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe

Mark Turner is one of the most admired saxophonists of his generation, renowned for his exploratory intellect and intimate expressivity on the full range of the tenor. This is his ECM leader debut, following albums for the label in the cooperative trio Fly with Larry Grenadier and Jeff Ballard, and appearances on key recordings by Billy Hart, Enrico Rava and Stefano Bollani. Turner leads a quartet of kindred spirits here, often entwining in serpentine fashion with rising-star trumpeter Avishai Cohen. They play long, introspective lines of hypnotic grace; and with the lithe rhythm section of bassist Joe Martin and drummer Marcus Gilmore, there is subtle volatility in the air.

CD ECM Records Louis Sclavis Quartet: Silk and Salt Melodies

2014

Louis Sclavis - clarinet
Gilles Coronado - chitara
Benjamin Moussay - pian, claviaturi
Keyvan Chemirani - tobe

Leading French clarinetist-composer-improviser Louis Sclavis continues his musical adventures with Gilles Coronado and Benjamin Moussay, who contributed creatively to his Atlas Trio album Sources in 2011. The addition of Iranian classical percussionist Kevyan Chemirani, master of the zarb, has brought a new dimension to their world of sound. Adventurous contemporary music, says Sclavis, can be broad enough to embrace different but complementary traditions. “‘Silk and Salt’ indicates my desire for this work to take an imaginary, nomadic, Central Asian route, but also to address the idea of emigration in world history. In this case: journeying away from and back to jazz.”

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: Live

2007

Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet, alto saxofon
Bjorn Meyer - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe
Andi Pupato - percutie

Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bärtsch’s band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It’s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Björn Meyer’s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bärtsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer’s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on “Modul 55”, but it’s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener’s attention.

CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad: Remembrance

2010

Ketil Bjørnstad - pian
Tore Brunborg - saxofon tenor
Jon Christensen - tobe

Remembrance is in effect a suite of eleven untitled pieces, each one seemingly spun and spun from a melodic or harmonic motif, a succession of moods whose density and intensity is decided by the inspiration of the moment. It is an absorbing musical journey which makes its impact in its totality rather than in isolated episodes – each one being a continuation or development, a juxtaposition or a contrast that leads the listener deeper into Bjørnstad’s compelling musical world.

Happy coincidences can often lead to extraordinary results. No-one could have foreseen that Lars Danielsson and the Armenian pianist Tigran would pair up to form the new dream duo of the European jazz scene, when in fact the two musicians played their first concert together only one week before the scheduled recordings of Liberetto.
