CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Miserere

Compozitor - Arvo Part / Interpreteaza: The Hilliard Ensemble ( dirijor Paul Hillier), Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn, Western Wind Chamber Choir (dirijor Dennis Russell Davies), Sarah Leonard, Christopher Bowers-Broadbent, Pierre Favre

"This recording shows a different side of Arvo Part's compositional work. The title composition has unusual instrumentation: winds and brass, choir and soloists, electric guitar, and bass guitar. The lyrics come slowly, one word per bar at a near pppp volume level.

The text comes from Psalm 51, David's "Have Mercy on Me" psalm, before bursting like an apocalyptic fire into the classic "Dies Irae," a tremendous assault of holy terror best listened to in the dark by the fireplace. "Festina Lente" is a shorter work for strings and harp -- short, brisk, and entertaining, developed from a single melody. [AllMusic]

CD ECM Records Hilliard Ensemble: Codex Specialnik

1995

The Hilliard Ensemble :

David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
John Potter - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

While the members of the Hilliard Ensemble have nary a stumble in their entire ECM track record, with Codex Speciálník they have left one of their most lasting footprints. Recorded during a veritable golden age of the ensemble’s relationship with the label, the album extracts its material from the eponymous “special songbook,” found in a Prague monastery and dated to around 1500. Said manuscript encompasses a wide array of music in two to four parts from composers renowned and arcane, if not unknown, and proves to be a rich source of Renaissance polyphony. The more compelling pieces tend to be anonymous, such as the Exordium quadruplate that opens the Hilliards’ carefully handpicked program. [ ecmreviews ]

Terje Rypdal chitara electrica
Bjorn Kjellemyr - bas
Audun Kleive - tobe
Terje Tonnesen - vioara
Lars Anders Tomter - viola
Oystein Birkeland - violoncel
Christian Eggen - dirijor

"I start this review where I might end it, by marking If Mountains Could Sing as one of Terje Rypdal’s finest achievements. Marrying the Norwegian guitarist’s penchant for magnesium fire with his comparable passion for classical textures, this record gives us the clearest intersection of his split idiomatic personality since Descendre." 1995
Ketil Bjornstad - pian
David Darling - violoncel
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Jon Christensen - tobe

"The twelve parts that comprise The Sea are of a proportion far beyond aquatic, for their magic lies in the hands and hearts of four musicians who came together for a session as ever-changing as its namesake. The number would seem to be significant: months in a year, hours in a day, each a cycle rendered timeless through a story that bleeds and weeps. David Darling’s trembling cello lets out the first cry, eddying with all the force of nature at the edge of a bow. " [ ecmreviews ]

What Rypdal has done is composed a jazz set that pays tribute to that classic Miles album, yet sounds fresh and new, which is not an easy feat. … What this music does accomplish in to recreate the way Miles’s band would establish a pulse – not just a beat, not just a rhythm, but a living pulse – and build everything up from that. … If you were ever a fan of Bitches Brew, you really must audition Vossabrygg. … An amazing, intoxicating, and satisfying brew it is. Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, fluegelhorn, RMI, tac piano, ring modulator

Terje Rypdal’s Waves (recorded 1977) announced the beginning of the Norwegian guitarist’s association with Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, which continues to this day. The album also introduced one of Terje’s most enduringly popular pieces, “Per Ulv.” “Rypdal’s album is a series of sonic excursions ranging from the expressionist to the impressionist…” wrote Record World. “Rypdal’s guitar and Mikkelborg’s trumpet are well-matched, with Manfred Eicher’s typically superb production putting it all in focus.”

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian: Hindemith Sonatas

1986

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Simply overflowing with musical brilliance, it remains one of the finest examples of what the viola is capable of. Kim Kashkashian’s technique and passion are almost palpable and one can only marvel at the humble respect she brings to both. The viola doesn’t simply exist somewhere between violin and cello, forever doomed to be second rate to both. It is, rather, an utterly dynamic and rich musical object, and the ways in which Hindemith unravels its subtler intonations in these sonatas is nothing short of monumental. Every chapter tells us something new, until the linguistic possibilities of the music represented in this eclectic set are exhausted. [ ecmreviews ]

Thomas Larcher :
Bose Zellen ( For Piano And Orchestra )
Still ( For Viola And Chamber Orchestra )
Madhares ( String Qartet No. 3 )

Larcher is an unpredictable, freethinking composer, who has set aside the modernist strictures that have long governed Central European music. … “Böse Zellen” is riveting from start to finish – a sweat-inducing drama in instrumental form. All the works receive immaculate, strongly felt performances. [ Alex Ross, The New Yorker ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Asturiana - Songs From Spain And Argentina

2007

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Manuel De Falla, Enrique Granados, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Lopez Buchardo

No higher compliment could be paid to Kashkashian’s playing of Spanish songs – art songs, but ones very close to their folk-song roots – than that it almost sounds as if she is singing. Or, rather, that the tone of her viola occasionally takes on the overtones of a human voice. … Throughout, Levin’s accompanying is unfailingly sensitive. His deep intellectual investment allows him to go as deep into the music as Kashkashian does. [ Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago ]

2016

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Lera Auerbach - pian

Dimitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes Op. 34
Lera Auerbach: Arcanum - Sonata For Viola And Piano

Auerbach’s duo version of Shostakovich’s Op. 34 Piano Preludes — a cycle of 24 in all the major and minor keys, on the models of Bach and Chopin — is a wizardly reimagining of its source, and the performance here by her and violist Kim Kashkashian seems to channel the earlier composer’s distinctive sound world. […] As performers, Kashkashian and Auerbach make a superb team, playing with urgency and finely tuned balance. [ Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Elegies

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elliott Carter, Alexander Glasunow, Franz Liszt, Zoltan Kodaly, Henri Vieuxtemps

“Elegies,” an elegant but somber collection played by Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin, is perfect for a dreary, lonely day. With its darker, lower sound, a viola sounds like a violin which has lost its will to live, the perfect voice for singing an elegy — a song in praise to the dead. What a somber mood it is. The title of the first cut, Benjamin Britten’s “Lachrymae,” refers to tears. Britten doesn’t write of the tears from the first stab of heartbreak, but the exhausted tears which come later.” [ Associated Press ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian - Giya Kancheli, Alfred Schnittke

1992

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn
Rundfunk Symphonie-Orchester Saarbrücken, dirijeaza Dennis Russell Davies

This is a profoundly emotional album, by turns confrontational and mournfully resplendent. Kashkashian brings her usual heartrending strength to even the subtlest gestures and is never afraid to betray the fragility of her pitch. The orchestras, under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, are forces to be reckoned with that scintillate in a slightly distanced mix. A benchmark recording in all respects. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin - Shostakovich, Chihara, Bouchard

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robyn Schulkowsky - percutie
Robert Levin - pian

Linda Bouchard: Pourtinade
Paul Chihara: Redwood
Dimitri Shostakovich: Sonata For Violion And Piano, Op. 147

Kim Kashkashian’s third disc for ECM is a curiously mixed bag. Although the liner notes give some delightful anecdotes and insider’s information, I am torn over how much said information enriches my experience of the whole. For example, Kashkashian points to the percussiveness of Shotakovich’s piano writing in his Sonata for Viola and Piano op. 147 as justification for the two companion pieces scored for “actual” percussion and viola. To be sure, this is a fascinating connection, though one that perhaps only the performers can intuit with such immediacy. Either way, the knowledge does guide my listening in new directions and pushes me to burrow into the music wholeheartedly. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Keith Jarrett - Bach: 3 Sonaten Fur Viola De Gamba Und Cembalo

1994

Kim Kashkashian - viola de gamba
Keith Jarrett - clavecin

J.S. Bach :
Sonate G-Dur BWV 1027
Sonate D-Dur BWV 1028
Sonate G-Moll BWV 1029

The viola da gamba is an obsolete instrument now, but in Bach's day there were two large families of stringed instruments: the older gambas and the newer violins. Although quite similar in construction and performance technique, the soft, husky sound of the gambas was gradually replaced by the steely brilliance of the violins. Indeed, only one member of the family--the double bass--remains in modern use. Today most artists play the music on either a viola or a cello, since the music can be adapted easily to either. Kashkashian plays the viola, and as she is one of the greatest performers on that instrument around, and given Jarrett's clean and limber accompaniments, she acquits herself with honor and grace in this lovely music. CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin - Brahms: Sonaten Fur Viola Und Klavier

1997

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Johannes Brahms :
Sonate Fur Viola Und Klavier Es-Dur, Op. 120/2
Sonate Fur Viola Und Klavier F-Moll, Op. 120/1

'Brahms' third-to-last works, these sonatas are astonishing pieces looking back to the classical-romantic vocabulary he exploited and refined so fully while prophesying the structural and sonic freedom of 20th century modernism. These extraordinarily effortless and seamless works teem with emotion that is voluptuously abundant yet subsumed to the demands of a melodic structure that itself partakes of a sublime futurity. Listen, then listen again to grasp that one movement is a waltz, another a theme and variations, a third based on a country dance. Kashkashian and Levin perform with ravishing and egoless attention; they and their instruments seem to become the music.' [ Fredric Koepel, The Commercial Appeal ]

Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran
Vasiko Tevdorashvili - voce
Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, dirijeaza Dennis Russell Davies

Giya Kancheli:
- Midday Prayers
- Caris Mere
- Night Prayers

Kronos Quartet fans will recognize the final piece, Night Prayers, from their album of the same name. This extended version (for saxophone and string orchestra) begins with very deep voices, resounding from the liminal realm that is tape, accentuated by a knotty fringe of strings. As saxophonist Jan Garbarek pierces the gloom with his light, the piece flaps its thematic shutters like a quiet storm. Generally a very meditative journey, though not without its moments of rapture, Night Prayers is a captivating highpoint of Kancheli’s spiral of sound. Jan Garbarek gives due respect to the music at hand, and makes the most of a brief improvisational window in an otherwise precisely notated architecture. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble: Officium

1993
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
The Hilliard Ensemble:
David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
John Potter - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

Recorded in a heavily reverberant Austrian monastery, the voices sometimes develop in overwhelming waves, and Garbarek rides their crest, his soprano sax soaring in the monastery acoustic, or he underscores the voices almost unobtrusively, echoing the voices, finding ample room to move around the modal harmonies yet applying his sound sparingly.

Those with nervous metabolisms may become impatient with this undefinable music, but if you give it a chance, it will seduce you, too. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble: Mnemosyne

1999
Jan Garbarek Soprano Saxophone, Tenor Saxophone
The Hilliard Ensemble
David James - contratenor
John Potter - tenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton

A sign we are, inexplicable without pain ... .’ The words are by the nineteenth-century German poet Friedrich Holderlin, taken from Mnemosyne, one of the cryptic hymns that he wrote before descending into madness. ECM publishes the entire first strophe as a sort of legend, and the reference is telling. ‘Mnemosyne’ was the mother of the muses, and the word also means ‘memory’. For Holderlin, song was an ‘abandoned, flowing nature’, a description that fits this album beautifully.

Memory, ecstasy, pain, joy, reconciliation: all are, at one time or another, signalled in the present programme. It is very different to Officium, The Hilliard’s first collaboration with Jan Garbarek (10/94). Tenor John Potter writes that for Mnemosyne, a good deal of the repertoire ‘consists of very small amounts of material with minimal notation’. Officium was a mellifluous melding of sensual sax improvisation and early choral music; Mnemosyne embraces a wider musical world and occasionally takes a harder musical line.
Garbarek spices the English thirteenth-century Alleluia nativitatis that opens the second disc with some unexpectedly Eastern-sounding modulations.

CD ECM Records Meredith Monk: Songs Of Ascension

2011

Meredith Monk Ensemble
Todd Reynolds Quartet
The M6
Montclair State University Singers
Heather J. Buchanan Conductor
Meredith Monk - voce, Shruti Box

Voices and instruments are paired and balanced against each other to an extent rare in her music. Inspirations for the work included the Song of Ascents, a group of psalms said to have been sung during pilgrimages, and a timely invitation to perform at an 8-story tower designed by visual artist Ann Hamilton. “Songs of Ascension” finds Monk playing with the musical, sonic, metaphysical and literal connotations of upward movement. “If Monk is seeking a place in the classical firmament, classical music has much to learn from her.” - [ Alex Ross, The New Yorker ]
