CD ECM Records Dino Saluzzi, Anja Lechner: Ojos Negros

2007

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Anja Lechner - violoncel

Before virtuoso Argentine musician–composer Astor Piazzolla came along in the mid–50’s, the bandoneon (button squeezebox) was primarily known as a sailor’s ‘toy’ accordion.
Twelve years after his death, there’s but one cat with instrumental and compositional chops audaciously iconoclastic enough to walk in El Maestro’s boots: Dino Saluzzi.
The album finds Saluzzi beautifully linking up with Lechner, cellist of the Rosamunde Quartet, to take tango to a dark noirish place that Piazzolla lovers dream of. [ Tom Terrell, Global Rhythm ]

"For a country with such a small population, Norway has much to be proud of when it comes to the arts...and not just music, though it remains a country whose support has certainly resulted in a disproportionate number of creative musicians across the broadest musical spectrum. Looking at the violin and its variants alone, there is the traditional Hardanger fiddle work of Nils Okland, already known to fans of the ECM label for albums including Lysoen: Hommage a Ole Bull (2011), his subtle and sublime duo recording with pianist/harmonium player Sigbjorn Apeland; the more decidedly classical leanings of violinist Bjarte Eike, a member of keyboardist Jon Balke's Magnetic North Orchestra, most recently heard on Diverted Travels (ECM, 2004), and whose own The Image of Melancholy (BIS, 2014) is an overlooked gem; or the more pedal-to-the-metal work of violinist Ola Kvernberg in the recent debut of Grand General (Rune Grammofon, 2013).

CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad, David Darling: Epigraphs

2000

Ketil Bjornstad - pian
David Darling - violoncel

"What a record it is! Epigraphs combines the delicately weighted, mathematically perfect, lingering notes from Bjørnstad's piano with the growling, soaring singing of Darling's cello. Like their earlier collaboration The River, the pieces here owe much to 16th/17th century composers William Byrd and Orlando Gibbons. The pair share a mutual instinct for improvisation which has resulted in one of the most exquisite albums of slow, raw music to emerge in recent years." [ Mike Bradley, The Times ]

CD ECM Records Billy Hart, Ethan Iverson Quartet: All Our Reasons

2011

Billy Hart - tobe
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Ben Street - contrabas
Ethan Iverson - pian

First ECM recording of a quartet formed in 2003. Originally billed as the Ethan Iverson-Mark Turner Quartet, it soon became the Billy Hart Quartet, and under this name has played shows to packed houses each year in New York City. The group’s first album for hard-bop label High Note in 2005 figured on many critics’ best-of-the year list. Since then, the ensemble’s music has gotten more free and spacious, a sensibility that aligns perfectly with ECM.

1978

There are certain images that seem fail-proof when musically evoked. The “Waterwheel” that inaugurates us into guitarist Ralph Towner’s astonishingly beautiful Batik is one of them. Having since been painted for us by such varied talents as Hamza El Din (see the Kronos Quartet’s Pieces of Africa) and Marina Belica (former leader of the October Project, of which their self-titled debut is a personal all-time favorite), Towner’s particular configuration embodies the best of all worlds with the precision of his fingers magnified to great effect by Jack DeJohnette on drums and soothingly animated by the bass of Eddie Gomez.

Edward Vesala - tobe

ecmreviews:
"I can only imagine the reactions Tomasz Stanko garnered with Balladyna, his first recording for ECM. The no-holds-barred “First Song” jumps into action with that hard swing that can only come from Dave Holland. Add to this brew the wide-ranging percussion of Edward Vesala and the spicy solos of our frontman and Tomsaz Szukalski, and you have a jambalaya to savor and remember. After such a climactic opener, Stanko could play “Happy Birthday” for all I care. Thankfully (though who knows what this quartet might have done with such ubiquity?) we a get the Ornette Coleman-infused “Tale” that faithfully charts a key transition from raw to cooked jazz. One can feel the rapt attention with which each musician listens to the other. This live, interactive energy continues in “Num,” sustained by knitted cymbal work as the two Tomaszes go head to ecstatic head. A killer bass solo makes the cut complete.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Dust of Time

ECM’s recordings of Eleni Karaindrou’s music for films have always been more than “soundtracks”: they stand as independent artworks. So it is with the music written originally for Angelopoulos’s “Dust of Time”. In these intensely melodic compositions created from a delicate balance of instrumental colours, violin, cello and harp are especially important, as Karaindrou notes, “not only because of their own distinctiveness but also because of the inner quality of three participating musicians who live in Greece but were born in Rumania and Albania (Sergiu Nastasa, Renato Ripo, Maria Bildea). The flavour of their own musical tradition (tsiganiko) and of a very special inner feeling, permeates their playing. I had the feeling that the accordion had to pervade certain special moments with its colour; and the oboe should add some emotional touches on the canvas of my music.”

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Eternity And A Day

1998

Music for the Golden Palm winning film by Theo Angelopoulous, writt en by Eleni Karaindrou, whom Time magazine has hailed as 'Greece's most eleoquent living composer'. The worldwide success of Ulysses' Gaze has shown how convincingly Karaindrou's themes can take on a life of their own. Her melodies have been described as 'dark and brooding, redolent of red wine and the salty brine of the sea, at once plaintive and erotically lyrical.' Karaindrou's score for 'Eternity and a Day' makes poetic use of the instruments of Greek folk music, particularly the sound of the clarinet, keening in the mountain air, or hovering over a rich bourdon of strings.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Concert In Athens

2013

ECM’s Manfred Eicher acted as artistic director for this 2010 live concert, bringing in the likes of Jan Garbarek and the brillant violinist Kim Kshkashian as soloists. There are marvellous things here. Karaindrou’s style is generally understated and subtle. Colours are muted, tempi tend to be restrained. Yet the music always moves, seems to be going somewhere and has something definite to say – there’s a welcome lack of ambient, moody blandness. [...] Kashkashian’s viola solos are sublime. The most remarkable thing about this CD is the wondrous sound. It’s warm, rich and detailed. I ended up listening to this in a darkened room, endlessly replaying the four-minute Dance from Ulysses’ Gaze. So good you’ll rush out immediately and buy copies for all your cinephile friends.

CD ECM Records Ralph Alessi: Quiver

Ralph Alessi - trompeta
Gary Versace - pian
Drew Gress - contrabas
Nasheet Waits - tobe

The trumpeter seems to have found an ideal venue, his penchant for the oblique statement and ventilated ensemble nicely couched in a pristine recording and a magical ensemble. Alessi’s compositions have an allusive vibe, less outright statements than skeletons on which the band drapes its sounds […] The quality of bold indirectness that makes ‘Quiver’ so exceptional is also integral to Alessi’s playing. He can squeeze a run like a lemon, juicing a melody into a little pool of liquid, or he may croon as on ‘Heist’, growing animated but never brash, always reaching for refreshing notes.

CD ECM Records Mats Eilertsen Trio: And Then Comes The Night

2019

Mats Eilertsen - contrabas
Harmen Fraanje - pian
Thomas Stronen - tobe

Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen has been a distinctive presence on ECM recordings by, amongst others, Tord Gustavsen, Trygve Seim, Mathias Eick, Nils Økland, Wolfert Brederode and Jakob Young and has long maintained several projects of his own, including this trio, now in its 10th year of existence. And Then Comes The Night (named after the novel by Icelandic writer Jón Kalman Stefánsson), was recorded at Lugano’s Audiotorio Stelio Molo and Eilertsen, drummer Thomas Strønen, and Dutch pianist Harmen Fraanje make full use of what Mats calls the studio’s “special character and atmosphere” and the acutely-focused interplay the room encourages. “We came in with a number of compositional sketches and the intention of seeing what could be shaped from them, with Manfred Eicher’s help, in that specific space.“ The result is an album of subtle group music, sidestepping many of the conventions of trio playing, in a recording that demands and rewards concentrated listening.

CD ECM Records Mats Eilertsen: Rubicon

2016

Norwegian bassist Mats Eilertsen has been a strong and supportive presence on a dozen ECM sessions to date. With Rubicon he steps forward to present his own music, with an international cast. The album features compositions originally written in response to a commission from the Vossajazz Festival. All About Jazz reviewed the premiere performance: “Rubicon proved to be a very dynamic work. Eilertsen ensured that each of the instrumentalists took their share of the spotlight, brought together combinations of players that emphasized tonal variation, and created ensemble sections bursting with life.” After fine-tuning the material on tour, Mats brought his septet to Oslo’s Rainbow Studio, where Manfred Eicher produced this definitive version of Rubicon in May 2015.

Ante Lucem, a powerful suite for jazz quintet and symphony orchestra by Finnish pianist/harpist/composer Iro Haarla, was premiered at the Umeå Jazz Festival in October 2012. It was recorded at the Concert Hall of NorrlandsOperan in Umeå, and the album is drawn both from the premiere concert and from sessions on the following days. Ante Lucem is comprised of four separate yet closely linked pieces which reflect in different ways, the composer says, upon the “struggle between darkness and light.” In a review of the premiere for All about Jazz, John Kelman observed that “Haarla’s writing moved from maelstrom-like turbulence to deeper melancholy … Whether it was more dramatic turns with the full orchestra or breakdowns into smaller subsets, it was an evocative and provocative performance.”

2005

Iro Haarla - pian, harpa
Mathias Eick - trompeta
Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Uffe Krokfors - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

Further, closer listens uncover the unique beauties of Haarla’s music, which sits at that mystical point halfway between improv and composition. “Barcarole” has one of those folky tunes that seems to have been around for years, just waiting for someone to pluck it from the air. Other pieces offer the barest wisps of melody, relying on the group’s ability to generate structure spontaneously. Haarla’s approach to the piano has the weightless, displaced qualities of Paul Bley, while her harp brings a delicate romanticism to the proceedings. … Seim’s blurry, slurred soprano curls are also gorgeously expressive, and a good foil for Eick’s pure toned excursions. … Eick constructs logical, probing solos that hang in the spaces left by the rest of the group. Christensen and Krokfors … never turn up the heat too much, they generate enough momentum to coax the frontline into some gorgeous performances. Let’s hope we get to hear more from them…

CD ECM Records Iro Haarla: Vespers

2011

Iro Haarla - pian, harpa
Mathias Eick - trompeta
Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Uffe Krokfors - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

Six years after the much-loved “Northbound” – described by All About Jazz as “lovely, articulate, river-deep music” -, a new album of emotionally-powerful ballads from outstanding composer-pianist-harpist Iro Haarla and her remarkable Finnish-Norwegian ensemble. The line-up is unchanged, likewise the commitment of the players, top-flight improvisers, every one. “Vespers” continues a tradition of music - and a scope feeling - that Iro helped establish in the Far North in her years as composer/arranger/orchestrator for Edward Vesala’s bands (and magical ECM recordings including “Lumi”, “Ode To The Death Of Jazz”, “Invisible Storm” and “Nordic Gallery”). Iro has, furthermore, composed music for the UMO Jazz Orchestra (in 2002 for Tomasz Stanko as soloist, and in 2006 for a “UMO plays Haarla” event in Helsinki and for a suite of pieces premiered in Tampere). In 2008, at the instigation of Manfred Eicher, she premiered new music for string quartet and piano and harp in Helsinki.

2016

Tigran Hamasyan - pian
Arve Henriksen - trompeta
Eivind Aarset - chitara electrica

Within ‘Atmosphères’ there is a sense of moving from the antiquity of Komitas to creative improvisation, neither completely independent of the other. Because the album successfully exists in two worlds, it has broad appeal and in equal measure for those with an affinity for either. Aarset and Bang's contributions may not always be distinct on first listen but the guitarist provides a denser layer to the music while Bang adds a minimalist variation of orchestration.
