CD ECM Records Cikada Quartet - Saariaho, Cage, Maderna: In Due Tempi

2005

The Cikada String Quartet

Henrik Hannisdal - vioara
Odd Hannisdal - vioara
Marek Konstantynowicz - viola
Morten Hannisdal - violoncel

Kaija Saariaho - Nymphea ( For String Quartet And Live Electronics )
John Cage - String Quartet In Four Parts
Bruno Maderna - Quartetto Per Due Archi In Due Tempi

These quartets illustrates three contrasting approaches to form and language. The earliest, John Cage’s String Quartet in Four Parts, is a sequence of spare, gestural movements that, typically, forces us to contemplate the nature of sound, silence and space. Bruno Maderna’s Quartetto per archi in due tempi, written for Berio, uses as its basis a serial technique that involves not just pitch but duration. It rejoices in refinement but also extremities – here lyrical, there brutal. Kaija Saariaho’s single-movement Nymphea for quartet and live electronics was written under the influence of the spectralists Gerard Grisey and Tristan Murail. It’s a work of ever varying textures, surfaces, colours. The Cikadas play everything superbly. [ Stephen Pettitt, Sunday Times ]

CD ECM Records Maxim Rysanov, Kristina Blaumane - Dobrinka Tabakova: String Paths

2012
Kristina Blaumane - violoncel
Maxim Rysanov - viola, dirijor
Roman Mints - vioara
Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
+etc

Tabakova is fortunate in her musical friends, and many of them are gathered here to make her music: Kristina Blaumane and Maxim Rysanov are outstanding soloists in the Cello Concerto and ‘Suite in Old style’ respectively, but the performances are of the highest quality across the CD as a whole. The recordings bring clarity to the solo lines and rich reverberance to the carpet of string-orchestral sound that Tabakova favours. A winner, then, and I urge you to make its acquaintances soon – it will take only the opening bars of ‘Insight’ to persuade you that you made the right decision.

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Sarah Rothenberg, Steven Schick - Feldman / Satie / Cage: Rothko Chapel

2015

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Sarah Rothenberg - pian, Celeste
Steven Schick - percutie
Sonja Bruzauskas - mezzo-soprana
Lauren Snouffer - soprana
Houston Chamber Choir , dirijor Robert Simpson

Rothko Chapel addresses a network of musical relationships and inspirations. The album opens with Morton Feldman’s Rothko Chapel, named for the Houston, Texas multi-faith chapel built to house Mark Rothko’s site-specific paintings. Feldman considered that his music lay “between categories, between time and space, between painting and music”, and described the score as his “canvas”. Amongst his most important influences were abstract painters, his friend Rothko prominent amongst them. (Rothko, for his part, yearned to “raise painting to the level of music and poetry”.)

CD ECM Records Vijay Iyer Trio: Break Stuff

2014

Vijay Iyer - pian
Stephan Crump - contrabas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe

"Though Break Stuff is Vijay Iyer's third appearance on ECM in less than year, it is the debut offering from the longstanding trio on the label. The pianist and composer has been working with bassist Stephen Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore for more than a decade. They've issued two previous recordings together. Iyer usually works conceptually, and Break Stuff is no exception. In the press release he states that "a break in music is still music: a span of time in which to act. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Vijay Iyer Sextet: Far From Over

2017

Vijay Iyer Piano, Fender Rhodes
Stephan Crump Double Bass
Tyshawn Sorey Drums
Steve Lehman Alto Saxophone
Mark Shim Tenor Saxophone
Graham Haynes Cornet, Flugelhorn, Electronics

The 10-track, nearly hour-long album offers one of the bandleader’s strongest and most varied programs—one in which feverish ensemble writing hangs together with groove-oriented tracks and sparer experimental textures. […] The union of players and material inspires a new synthesis: the sound of Iyer consolidating strengths and discovering some new ones as he settles into the vibe created by his most potent band yet. CD ACT Vijay Iyer with Prasanna & Nitin Mitta: Tirtha

2008

Vijay Iyer - pian
Prasanna - chitara, voce
Nitin Mitta - tabla

“Tirtha (the band) formed in response to an invitation. In 2007 I was asked to put together a concert celebrating 60 years of Indian independence. Normally I’ve steered clear of fusion experiments that attempt to mix styles - to “create something,” as John Coltrane famously admonished, “more with labels, you see, than true evolution.” For this event I hoped to avoid those pitfalls, and offer something personal. CD ECM Records Denes Varjon - Berg / Janacek / Lizt: Precipitando

2011

Denes Varjon - pian

Alban Berg - Sonata Op. 1
Leos Janacek - V Mlhach ( In The Mists )
Franz Liszt - Sinata In B Minor

And from the very start of the CD, the luminous playing of the opening of Berg’s Sonata Op.1 tells us this is a pianist of rare sensitivity. The word seems almost to float in this performance, continually remaking itself from moment to moment and never come to rest. […] Varjón ranges through the music as if mapping an unknown landscape. […] All in all, a very impressive and intelligently planned programme. [ Calum MacDonald, BBC Music Magazine ]

CD ECM Records Ivan Monighetti, Tatiana Melentieva - Alexander Knaifel: Blazhenstva

2006

Ivan Monighetti - violoncel, pian, dirijor

Lege Artis Choir

Alexander Knaifel
- Lamento For Violoncello Solo (1967)
- Blazhenstva For Soloists, Orchestra And Choir (1996)

Following on from the critically-acclaimed “Amicta Sole” album, Russian composer Alexander Knaifel presents two strikingly different compositions, inspirationally linked through the figure of Mstislav Rostropovich. Knaifel’s background as a cellist is put to good service in the 18 minute Lamento for solo cello (written 1967, revised 1987).

Judit Szabo - violoncel

Oleg Malov - pian

Alexander Knaifel
- In Air Clean And Unseen ( For Piano And String Quartett ) (1994)
- Svete Tikhiy ( O Gladsome Light ) - The Song Of The Most Holy Theotokos (1991)

If I were a betting man, I’d use my money to back the success of an ECM disc of music by the Russian composer Alexander Knaifel – the Piano Quintet „In Air Clear and Unseen“ but more particularly a work for soprano and sampler, “Svete Tikhiy”. It’s music that’s steeped in the spirit of the Russian Orthodox liturgy … wonderfully evocative… Simplicity itself, but ethereal and haunting and I’d say a potential popular catch with a large public. The fourth New Series album from the St Petersburg-based composer Alexander Knaifel may be his most wide-ranging to date, voyaging from the sacred to the secular and back again via several inspired detours. It includes two Prayers to the Holy Spirit, movingly performed by the Lege Artis Choir.

Victor Kissine: Zerkalo
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Trio, Op.50

Victor Kissine’s „Zerkalo“ (The Mirror), composed in 2009 and dedicated to the performers on this warmly engineered release, proves to be an intriguing companion piece for the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. A compelling and emotionally varied work which draws its inspiration from two lines in Anna Akhmatova’s “Poem Without a Hero”, it begins with a sequence of framentary melodic ideas which dradually develop a coherent force as they gather momentum before disintegrating into a shadowy and bleak coda.

Giya Kancheli - Lament

Breathtaking and emotionally-fraught violin by Gidon Kremer dominates one of Georgian composer Kancheli's most moving compositions, dedicated to fallen comrade Luigi Nono. Reviews of the work in performance have spoken of a vast, brooding, stillness, where patience is 'rewarded by moments of great, piercing beauty.'

CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Kremerata Baltica - Mahler / Shostakovich

2007

Yulia Korpacheva - soprana
Fëdor Kuznetsov - bas
Kremerata Baltica, dirijeaza Gidon Kremer

This is an extremely dramatic and atmospheric performance of the Shostakovich 14th Symphony, the more unusual for being conducted by Gidon Kremer from the concertmaster’s desk. There’s no loss of scale, but certainly an intensified sense of intimacy, and he is served by magnificent playing from the Kremerata Baltica and two first-rate soloists. … The coupling is the Adagio from Mahler’s Tenth Symphony in an arrangement for strings only… This too is beautifully played, and in this dedicated reading the music discloses previously unsuspected links back to Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and forward to Strauss’s Metamorphosen. CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Patricia Kopatchinskaja - Giya Kancheli: Chiaroscuro

2015

Gidon Kremer - vioara
Patricia Kopatchinskaja - vioara
Kremerata Baltica

While the title work ‘Chiaroscuro’ claims to take its inspiration from a dramatic painting technique dating from the renaissance and baroque eras, its ominous opening bass drum intonations usher in a surprisingly Fellini-esque sensation. It’s a temporary optimism that’s rare to Kancheli’s generally bleak musical landscapes. Yet it is this very bleakness that makes it such a glorious match for Manfred Eicher’s signature dark yet vibrantly present recording style. For his part, Gidon Kremer’s long-standing creative partnership with Kancheli brings a unique spin and strong new influence to the performance of this work on the current disc, moving as it does from the lightness of its opening bars to the truly morose and more familiar Kancheli fair that eventually arrives. Marija Nemanyte - vioara
Maxim Rysanov - viola
Giedre Dirvanauskaite - violoncel
Khatia Buniatishvili - pian
Andrei Pushkarev - vibrafon
Sofia Altunashvili - voce inregistrata
Kremerata Baltica, dirijor Roman Kofman

Stefan Kovacs Tickmayer - Eight Hymns In Memoriam Andrei Tarkovsky
Cesar Franck - Piano Quintet In F Minor
Giya Kancheli - Silent Prayer

This is a typically unusual ECM disc, and I would especially urge those with an angst for contemporary music to try it. The Franck is a rich but deeply rewarding filling to what might seem a ‘modern’ sandwich, but the outer works are special and memorable – at times jaw-droppingly beautiful, and always performed with infectious conviction by the musicians of Kremerata Baltica.

CD ECM Records Vox Clamantis/Jaan-Eik Tulve: Filia Sion

2010

Vox Clamantis, dirijor Jaan-Eik Tulve

Estonian ensemble Vox Clamantis brings together singers and instrumentalists who share an interest in Gregorian chant as the basis of all European art music. Their interpretation of medieval music is never purely ‘historical’: while always remaining true to the spirit of this repertoire, the approach to the work and the selection of pieces is contemporary.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett - Dmitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes And Fugue Op. 87

1992

Keith Jarrett - pian

Those who have admired Keith Jarrett’s piano improvisations will find him equally impressive in Dmitri Shostakovich’s 24 Preludes and Fugues […] His technique is what you notice first; he makes things look easy that cost other pianists – good ones – a lot of obvious effort. The interpretation is individual but not eccentric; the composer and performer have a meeting of minds with exciting results. [ Joseph McLellan, The Washington Post ]

Tigran Mansurian :
- Double Concerto, for violin, violoncello and string orchestra
- Concerto No. 2, for violin and string orchestra "Four Serious Songs"

Spellbinding work of beauty […] The Mansurian program is a woman’s affair with the young Moldavian violinist joined by cellist Anja Lechner and Amsterdam Sinfonietta conducted by its leader, Candida Thompson. Kopatchinskaja brings resilient radiance to Mansurian’s 2006 hauntingly plaintive Second Violin concerto (‘Four serious Songs’), which takes its cue from late Brahms. Helena Tulve, Arianna Savall, Charles Barbier, Taniel Kirikal, Marco Ambrosini, Riivo Kallasmaa, NYYD Quartet, Vox Clamantis, Ensemble Hortus Musicus, Jaan-Eik Tulve, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Olari Elts

In Tulve’s music the thinking always seems more vertical than horizontal; the predominant mood is introspective, almost meditational, the textures and harmonies beautifully imagined, the sense of pulse and forward momentum often elusive. ‘Extinction des Choses Vues’ for orchestra does build to a massive climax, achieved through weight and intensity rather than movement; the effect is rather like Kaija Saariaho’s music of the 1980s and 90s, and wonderfully achieved.
