CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal: Waves

1977

Terje Rypdal - electric guitar, keyboard, synthesizer
Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, fluegelhorn, RMI, tac piano, ring modulator
Sveinung Hovensjo - basses
Jon Christensen - drums, percussion

Terje Rypdal’s Waves (recorded 1977) announced the beginning of the Norwegian guitarist’s association with Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, which continues to this day. The album also introduced one of Terje’s most enduringly popular pieces, “Per Ulv.” “Rypdal’s album is a series of sonic excursions ranging from the expressionist to the impressionist…” wrote Record World. “Rypdal’s guitar and Mikkelborg’s trumpet are well-matched, with Manfred Eicher’s typically superb production putting it all in focus.”

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Asturiana - Songs From Spain And Argentina

2007

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Manuel De Falla, Enrique Granados, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Lopez Buchardo

No higher compliment could be paid to Kashkashian’s playing of Spanish songs – art songs, but ones very close to their folk-song roots – than that it almost sounds as if she is singing. Or, rather, that the tone of her viola occasionally takes on the overtones of a human voice. … Throughout, Levin’s accompanying is unfailingly sensitive. His deep intellectual investment allows him to go as deep into the music as Kashkashian does. [ Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Elegies

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elliott Carter, Alexander Glasunow, Franz Liszt, Zoltan Kodaly, Henri Vieuxtemps

“Elegies,” an elegant but somber collection played by Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin, is perfect for a dreary, lonely day. With its darker, lower sound, a viola sounds like a violin which has lost its will to live, the perfect voice for singing an elegy — a song in praise to the dead. What a somber mood it is. The title of the first cut, Benjamin Britten’s “Lachrymae,” refers to tears. Britten doesn’t write of the tears from the first stab of heartbreak, but the exhausted tears which come later.” [ Associated Press ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Keith Jarrett - Bach: 3 Sonaten Fur Viola De Gamba Und Cembalo

1994

Kim Kashkashian - viola de gamba
Keith Jarrett - clavecin

J.S. Bach :
Sonate G-Dur BWV 1027
Sonate D-Dur BWV 1028
Sonate G-Moll BWV 1029

The viola da gamba is an obsolete instrument now, but in Bach's day there were two large families of stringed instruments: the older gambas and the newer violins. Although quite similar in construction and performance technique, the soft, husky sound of the gambas was gradually replaced by the steely brilliance of the violins. Indeed, only one member of the family--the double bass--remains in modern use. Today most artists play the music on either a viola or a cello, since the music can be adapted easily to either. Kashkashian plays the viola, and as she is one of the greatest performers on that instrument around, and given Jarrett's clean and limber accompaniments, she acquits herself with honor and grace in this lovely music. CD ECM Records Momo Kodama - Ravel / Takemitsu / Messiaen: La Vallee Des Cloches

2013

Momo Kodama - pian

Maurice Ravel - Miroirs
Toru Takemitsu - Rain Tree Sketch
Olivier Messiaen - La Fauvette Des Jardins

Kodama’s impeccable technique and facility for crystalline sounds makes for a mesmerizing program. ‘Miroirs’, the highlight of the program, is awash in rich colors, poised and graceful. Two other rarely performed works round out the program. ‘Rain Tree Sketch’ is a short, but lovely treat, and Messiaen’s trademark birdcalls thread through ‘La Fauvette Des Jardins’. Impressive. CD ECM Records Giya Kancheli: Trauerfarbenes Land

1998

Radio Symphonieorchester Wien , dirijor Dennis Russell Davies

Giya Kancheli:
- A La Duduki
- Trauerfarbenes Land

Giya Kancheli's fifth album for ECM New Series is the first to be devoted exclusively to his orchestral music and features two extended pieces of often volcanic power that bear out the judgement of Russian composer Rodion Shchedrin: 'Kancheli is an ascetic with the temperament of a maximalist, a smouldering Vesuvius.' Impassioned performances by the Vienna Radio Symphony Orchestra under the dynamic direction of Dennis Russell Davies make this another milestone in the career of a musician that Time magazine has said 'may well be the most important composer to emerge from the old Soviet Union since Dmitri Shostakovich.'

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: November

1993
John Abercrombie - chitara
Marc Johnson- contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet

"Named for both the month its was recorded in and for the mood it maintains, November is a cogent record from guitarist John Abercrombie’s trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Peter Erskine, along with special guest John Surman. The English reedman lends his fluid considerations to the album’s deepest moments, and nowhere so engagingly as in “The Cat’s Back,” thus opening a cloudy and sometimes pensive set of mostly group originals. Abercrombie’s quiet sparkle ushers in the gravid quartet sound of this improvised prelude, Surman tipping the scales with bass clarinet against the weight of Erskine and Johnson’s joyous communication.

CD ACT Paolo Fresu / Richard Galliano / Jan Lundgren: Mare Nostrum

2007

Paolo Fresu - trumpet, fluegelhorn
Richard Galliano - accordion, bandoneon, accordina
Jan Lundgren - piano

Mare Nostrum's biggest surprise isn't its instrumentation -- a trio of accordion, trumpet and piano -- but how natural the combination sounds in its execution. Of course, Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordion player Richard Galliano (who is of Italian offspring), and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren are well-known, critically praised jazz musicians who have all been known to eschew musical boundaries and defy genre limitations, so the music on Mare Nostrum -- an album co-led by all three -- shouldn't come as a surprise, nor should its quality, and yet not everybody would have expected such marvelous results. Lars Danielsson - contrabas, violoncel
Paolo Fresu - trompeta, corn

“Summerwind”, their first joint studio project, brings the Swedish master bassist/cellist’s gorgeous sound on both instruments and his fine sense for simple and haunting melodies into a partnership with the bright, airy tones of one of Europe's most lyrical trumpeters whose way of “playing it cool” has such distinctive expressiveness.

Music must touch the emotionsFor Lars Danielsson, that consummate craftsman of sound on both cello and bass, the power of music resides in melody. It is the heart from which everything else develops, and his Liberetto ensemble has stayed true to this principle again in its third album.

CD ECM Records Wolfgang Muthspiel: Where The River Goes

2018

Wolfgang Muthspiel - chitara
Ambrose Akinmusire - trompeta
Brad Mehldau - pian
Larry Grenadier - contrabas
Eric Harland - tobe

Where The River Goes carries the story forward from Rising Grace, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel’s widely acclaimed 2016 recording, returning his cast of musicians to the same studio in southern France, for more of the intuitive magic and deep listening that characterised the earlier album. “The disc’s ambience,” said Downbeat of Rising Grace, “is meditative yet optimistic and joyful. Percolating grooves propel the flow; elemental melodies and classical harmonies provide signposts.”

CD ECM Records Michael Galasso: High Lines

2002
Michael Galasso - vioara
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Frank Coln - percutie
Marc Marder - contrabas

Classically-trained violinist/composer Galasso’s first ECM release in 20 years is a mix of influences from jazz and classical music to – probably – idioms from the near, middle and far east he has encountered in his ceaseless wandering around the world. … Galasso, who composed all these, mostly short, pieces, is a virtuoso of breathtaking quality, and Rypdal fills the performances in which he takes part with some compelling texture. Whether or not it may be considered jazz doesn’t really matter; it remains one of the more unusual releases of the year.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem: Madar

1994
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Anouar Brahem - oud
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla

Despite the loveliness of these interactions, the album works best in solitary. Brahem’s contemplative solo, “Bahia,” treks over twilit mountains with aching footsteps, carrying us as if by palanquin into a vale of lost intentions. The wind of his percussiveness shakes the boughs of leafless trees and sends their dead seeds clicking to the ground like sand against a window. And in the rhythmic cast of “Jaw,” Hussain emotes lifetimes in a single beat of his tabla, thus offering some intensely lucid moments. He returns to the fold in “Qaws,” giving voice to those waiting eyes at last with solid excitement. An odd piano “Epilogue” (sounding like a chord outline for a studio track left behind) leads us out.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Anthem

2000
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

Operating somewhere between contemporary classical and jazz, ... Towner occupies a unique niche in jazz. Known for his carneo on Weather Report’s 1972 album I Sing The Body Electric and work with the classical crossover group Oregon and countless ECM luminaries, he is perhaps best loved for his solo recitals, of which Anthem is the latest – and it’s a gem. There’s a pair of jazz standards, but the majority of the mesmerising set comprises original 12-string and classical guitar pieces, aching, ruminative sketches and developed compositions of such emotional vividness and musical detail that they hardly seem to be the work of one man. The music tugs at the listener’s attention and, with breathtaking balance and control, is always compelling. The acoustic guitar has never sounded better, and neither has this amazing guitar player. CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Alma

1996
Egberto Gismonti - pian

This is definitely one of those few recordings I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island.
Alma is sublimely beautiful, sad, and joyous. Many times I have been moved to tears by these compositions.
Even though Gismonte is a renowned guitarist, this recording features piano (with a few hints of synthesizer dropped in very sparingly, to wonderful effect).
Amazing, powerful music. [ Amazon ]

Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian

This live album is amazing in its scope, power and beauty. On guitar or piano, Gismonti often sounds as if he's playing two instruments at once, combining fierce rhythms with shapely melodies while Haden's warm, rich bass broadens the music with grainy texture and depth...Gismonti and Haden always add twists to the rhythms and angles to the melodies, making the music prismatic. CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: Stoa

2006

Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet, alto saxofon
Bjorn Meyer - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe
Andi Pupato - percutie

This is music that throbs with a pulsating dynamism that’s almost hypnotic. … Woven into the rhythmic tapestry is startling imagery that grows from simple beginnings – the way he exploits a single note using space and dynamics in the introduction of “Modul 36” gradually evolves into a musical journey that sweeps you along with its deft twists and turns. …

The elements of simplicity and purity are both impressive in their momentary effect but they are also musical gestures that reveal their secrets reluctantly. Bärtsch’s mysterious music will be around for a lot longer than the quick fix that majority taste seems to clamour for.

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Mobile: Continuum

2016

Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet
Kaspar Rast - tobe, percutie
Nicolas Stocker - tobe, percutie
Etienne Abelin - vioara
Ola Sendecki - vioara
David Schnee - viola
Solme Hong - violoncel
Ambrosius Huber - violoncel

Few musicians have continued to hone a concept as singularly unique and instantly recognizable, irrespective of context, as that being explored by Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch since he first formed Mobile with Don Li, Kaspar Rast and Mats Eser in 1997. First emerging on record in 2001 with Ritual Groove Music (Self-Released, reissued Ronin Rhythm, 2006), Bärtsch has evolved three very different contexts with which to explore the confluence of trance-inducing minimalist elements with rigorous, ritualistic compositional constructs, a deep interest in Japanese culture and other musical touchstones. While all three contexts—in addition to the all-acoustic Mobile, Bärtsch has performed and recorded as a solo pianist, as well as with the more elastic and jazz/funk-centric Ronin—share common DNA-level elements, each context is also different: refracting Bärtsch's underlying architectures through a series of disparate prisms.

CD ECM Records Shankar: Vision

1984
Shankar - vioara dubla, percutie
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran, tenor si bas, percutie
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn

One need only follow the pizzicato footsteps of “All For You” to get acquainted with the album’s beauties and to feel the shadows of Garbarek and Mikkelborg flying overhead. With this exuberant awakening still echoing inside us, we can only close our eyes in the title track.
