CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Alma

1996
Egberto Gismonti - pian

This is definitely one of those few recordings I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island.
Alma is sublimely beautiful, sad, and joyous. Many times I have been moved to tears by these compositions.
Even though Gismonte is a renowned guitarist, this recording features piano (with a few hints of synthesizer dropped in very sparingly, to wonderful effect).
Amazing, powerful music. [ Amazon ]

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Musica De Sobrevivencia

1993
Egberto Gismonti - pian, chitara, flaut
Nando Carneiro - sintetizator, chitara, caxixi
Jaques Morelenbaum - violoncel
Zeca Assumpcao - bas

"The opening arpeggios of “Carmem” earn our trust at once with a timeworn and familiar comfort. The pebbles of Gismonti’s plunking notes sink into nostalgic waters, pulled by arco threads into the hands of light that loosed them.

“Bianca” picks at those same threads, frayed like the edge of a carpet in a childhood home through which pass only the ghosts of revolt. Such backward glances are ever-present in Gismonti’s world, whether they are charting the skyward paths of “Lundú #2” or dancing with joy in “Alegrinho #2.” His fingers flutter across piano keys as adeptly as they walk a fingerboard, escorting the group’s cultured sound through a gallery of moods.

Children’s feet map the gray streets of “Forró,” cracked yet held in shape like the shells of hardboiled eggs, and continue to run through “Natura, festa do interior,” a 33.5-minute masterpiece of eroded landscapes. With a sweep as cinematic as it is prosaic, it inscribes a scroll’s worth of love for all things just and familial.

CD ECM Records Pat Metheny: Bright Size Life

1976

Pat Metheny - chitara electrica
Jaco Pastorius - bas
Bob Moses - tobe

AllMusic: "Pat Metheny's debut studio album is a good one, a trio date that finds him already laying down the distinctively cottony, slightly withdrawn tone and asymmetrical phrasing that would serve him well through most of the swerves in direction ahead. His original material, all of it lovely, bears the bracing air of his Midwestern upbringing, with titles like "Missouri Uncompromised," "Midwestern Nights Dream," and "Omaha Celebration." There is also a sole harbinger of radical matters way down the road with the inclusion of a loose-jointed treatment of Ornette Coleman's "Round Trip/Broadway Blues," proving that Song X did not come from totally out of the blue. Besides being Metheny's debut, this LP also features one of the earliest recordings of Jaco Pastorius, a fully formed, well-matched contrapuntal force on electric bass, though content to leave the spotlight mostly to Metheny. Bob Moses, who like Metheny played in the Gary Burton Quintet at the time, is the drummer, and he can mix it up, too. "

CD ECM Records Pat Metheny & Lyle Mays: As Falls Wichita, So Falls Wichita Falls

1981

Pat Metheny - chitara electrica, bas electric
Lyle Mays - pian , sintetizator, orga, claviaturi
Nana Vasconcelos - tobe, percutie, voce, berimbau

This joint solo effort by Metheny and regular pianist and collaborator Lyle Mays is an impressive outing. In the process of stretching out away from the confines of the quartet setting of prior albums, Metheny and Mays presage the sleeker and more ethereal sound of the band's Geffen years on portions of the title track.

CD ECM Records Chick Corea: Return To Forever

1972

Chick Corea - pian electric
Joe Farrell - flaut, saxofon sopran
Flora Purim - voce, percutie
Stan Clarke - bas
Airto Moreira - tobe, percutie

Steve Huey ( AllMusicGuide ): "The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea's fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke.

It wasn't actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group's second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It's all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach -- hardly the sort of firebrand approach to fusion that Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra were exploring, and far less rooted in funk or rock.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Rites

1998
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, percutie, sintetizatoare
Rainer Bruninghaus - claviaturi
Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Marilyn Mazur - percutie
Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra ( dirijor Jansug Kakhidze )
Bugge Wesseltoft - claviaturi, acordeon, sintetizatoare

Jan Garbarek's powerful new double-album is a magnum opus, and well-titled. 'Rites' suggests initiations, rituals, the archaic, the magical, but also 'rites of passage', and the Norwegian saxophonist reflects, in his choice of material, upon pivotal episodes and influences in his own life and those of his associates.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: All Those Born With Wings

1987
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane, flaut, electronice, percutie

Un album solo, introspectiv - piesa trei ii este dedicata lui Andrey Tarkovsky ( decedat in 1986 )

ecmreviews : As one of ECM’s most passionate and prolific contributors, Jan Garbarek has left us with a varicolored, sometimes watery, archive. For All Those Born With Wings, the Norwegian saxophonist went solo, painting an evocative album of relic-laden vistas. The result is a six-part session filled with a variety of instruments and tastes. The hammered dulcimer is a welcome sound to the Garbarek palette, and is used tastefully in the 1st Part, where Garbarek’s saxophone refracts into a flock of large-winged birds. An army of chants floods the 2nd Part, as martial drums resound like the introductory sequence of a classic martial arts film.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti / Charlie Haden / Jan Garbarek: Magico

1980
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

Along with the work of CODONA, Magico is perhaps a forerunner in what would come to be known as “world music,” and a pinnacle among ECM’s fruitful productions of the 1970s.

Although the talents assembled could hardly be more geographically disparate, their musical heartbeats trace the same calm graph across the EKG paper that is our appreciation. What appears a modest effort in number (the group gives us a humble quintet) plies massive depths in execution. The tracks “Bailarina” and “Silence” alone comprise more than half of the album’s duration.

The former’s graceful arcs and burnished veneer sparkle with understated virtuosity, while the latter features some of the gentlest relays between Garbarek and Haden alongside Gismonti’s frothy pianism. The jangly guitar of the title track guides us confidently through Garbarek’s incisive overlay before Gismonti switches over to classical on through “Spor.”

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti / Charlie Haden / Jan Garbarek: Folk Songs

1981

Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara , pian

This scintillating follow-up album to Magico is yet another fine example of ECM’s progressive comings together. Uniting multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti with the instantly recognizable stylings of saxophonist Jan Garbarek and bassist Charlie Haden seems at once a stroke of genius and an inevitable configuration.

A blue “Folk Song” sets the tone for all tender considerations that follow, slowly working its motions into a helix of atmospheres. Gismonti stretches out a gorgeous drawl in “Bôdas De Prata.” Within the open bowl of Garbarek’s cupped tenor, he glows like a firefly. The rhythmic acuity of “Cego Aderaldo” is enough to sustain an otherwise languid album.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Dis

1977
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, fluier
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

On Dis, his eighth album for the label, Jan Garbarek slipped off his extroverted garments and into a deep look inward. One immediately notices the windharp, one of the last instruments one might expect to hear on an album filed under “Jazz,” and which would make an ECM reappearance on Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden, Jan Garbarek: Carta De Amor

1981
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording.

“Carta de Amor” documents music captured at Munich’s Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums “Magico” and “Folk Songs”, the trio’s improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group.

Repertoire includes five pieces from Gismonti’s pen, with the title track heard in two variations, opening and closing this enthralling double album. Also heard here are Garbarek’s folk song arrangements and an extended, freewheeling version of his composition “Spor”. Charlie Haden brings in “La Pasionaria”, from the repertoire of the Liberation Music Orchestra and “All That Is Beautiful”, not previously documented on disc.

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Kavakos, Garbarek, Hilliard Ensemble - Tigran Mansurian: Monodia

2004

Kim Kashkashian - viola
The Hilliard Ensemble
Leonidas Kavakos - vioara
Jan Garbarek - saxofon
Münchener Kammerorchester , dirijeaza Christoph Poppen

Kim Kashkashian’s advocacy of the music of Tigran Mansurian led to last year’s critically-acclaimed “Hayren” album. Now comes a fuller portrait of Armenia’s foremost composer. This double album, made with Mansurian’s participation, includes premiere recordings of works of the last decade, in which Kashkashian is variously joined by Christoph Poppen and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Jan Garbarek, and the Hilliard Ensemble, while Leonidas Kavakos is the soloist in the 1981 Concert for Violin and Orchestra. An extraordinary cast, doing justice to extraordinary music. “Monodia” is certain to be a much-discussed recording

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie / Dave Holland / Jack DeJohnette: Gateway - Homecoming

1995
Gateway:
John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Dave Holland - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe, pian

The title track reunited more than one of the finest groups of the seventies, bringing together also the many emotional souvenirs each performer had gathered along the way. The joy in every lick and tumble is in full evidence.

DeJohnette is aflame, Abercrombie following his trail of embers with laser precision and shaving off an twist of lime for his solo, while Holland (who penned this and three other of the album’s nine tunes) is at his buoyant best. His montuno-flavored “Modern Times” and “How’s Never” throw open the doors for both of his bandmates, but especially for DeJohnette in the latter. [ ecm reviews ]

AllMusic:
"Recorded nine months prior to his death in September 2014, Kenny Wheeler's Songs for Quintet is the acclaimed jazz trumpeter's last studio album. Produced by ECM's Manfred Eicher at London's Abbey Road Studios with a handful of Wheeler's closest musical associates, Songs for Quintet is an intimate, lyrical session that exemplifies all that made Wheeler such a distinctive voice in jazz.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Implosions

1977

Stephan Micus - Sitars, Acoustic Guitar, Vocal, Bavarian Zithers, Shakuhachi, Sho, Thai Flute, Rabab

Although Micus has most often crafted albums at his home studio and sent them to Eicher for mixing and mastering, earlier ones such as this were recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where many of ECM’s formative releases were also realized. The studio dynamics imbue these travels with a rather different intimacy, one which brings its own climate and bounces back sunlight like the moon. Three Bavarian zithers, each with its own signature, form a dense and percussive bed for Micus’s singing in “Borkenkind.” His floating transpositions trail sutras of memory, spinning from them a yarn of forgetting. This becomes the sole purpose of the music: to detach oneself from the snares of fame and recognition until only the sound and the ear are left to dance unhindered. And indeed, when Micus sings again in “For M’schr And Djingis Khan,” accompanied by the uncut diamond of the rabab (Afghani lute), he balances on a tipping point into infinity, his mouth filled with empty pages. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden: Last Dance

2007

Keith Jarrett - pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

All of which made Jasmine (ECM, 2010) a release worth celebrating. Recorded at Jarrett's home (in his Cavelight Studio), it was an intimate conversation between two old friends—Jarrett and Haden—who'd not recorded together in over three decades, and who were brought together when the pianist participated in Reto Cardiff's film about the bassist, Rambling Boy (2009).

Some things are never lost, and if Jasmine proved anything, it's that the chemistry shared by Jarrett and Haden may have been on hiatus for 30 years, but was no less potent, no less profound, when they found themselves recording a series of standards at Jarrett's home with no rehearsals barring a few quick run-throughs of the changes. The collaboration must have been a fruitful one, because Last Dance comes from those same sessions, another full 76 minutes of music comprised, once again, of songs culled from jazz standards and the Great American Songbook. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Tribute

1989

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - bas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic: "The Keith Jarrett Standards Trio gets back down to business with two CDs' worth of familiar and perhaps not-so-familiar tunes, recorded in one evening in Cologne, Germany. There is a concept this time, for all the standards carry a dedication to some jazz man or woman who performed them -- and they are not predictable choices; Lee Konitz for "Lover Man," "It's Easy to Remember" for John Coltrane, "All of You" for Miles Davis, etc.

Almost every number has a reflective solo piano introduction, with one of the notable exceptions being Jarrett's rolling, convoluted opening variations on "All the Things You Are" (Sonny Rollins). "Solar" (the Bill Evans tribute) has challenging, fractured interplay between Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock, and it directly segues into Jarrett's own obsessive "Sun Prayer," which seems to lose its way after a fine start.
