CD ECM Records Golfam Kayham, Mona Matbou: Riahi

2016

Golfam Khayam - chitara
Mona Matbou Riahi - clarinet

Narrante is the highly attractive ECM debut album of Golfam Khayam and Mona Matbou Riahi, otherwise known as the Naqsh Duo. The guitarist and clarinetist, both born in Teheran, have pursued further musical adventures outside Iran while remaining fascinated and strongly influenced by their homeland’s rich and diverse traditions. In the process they have arrived at synthesis of their own, finding points of contact between aspects of Persian tradition and contemporary music. The forms, modes, drones and rhythms of Persian music as well its call for improvisation are redeployed, to new creative ends, in their fresh and vital work.

2009

Rosamunde Quartett
Andreas Reiner - vioara
Diane Pascal - vioara
Helmut Nicolai - viola
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Christian Gerhaher - bariton

Othmar Schoeck - Notturno (für Streichquartett und eine Singstimme), op. 47

If anything can broaden interest in the art of Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, it is this wonderful recording of his song cycle for baritone and string quartet. … The work represents Schoeck’s dark night of the soul – an act of introspection that expresses existential doubts in music of the most intimate lyricism. The intricacy with which Schoeck intertwines the voices, vocal and instrumental, is one of his supreme achievements. … Gerhaher, sensitively supported by the Rosamunde Quartet, proves himself a more-than-worthy successor, summoning many of Fischer-Dieskau’s interpretative qualities. CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Leggiero, Pesante

2002

Maacha Deubner - soprana
Silke Avenhaus - pian
Valentin Silvestrov - pian
Rosamunde Quartett
Andreas Reiner - vioara
Simon Fordham - vioara
Helmut Nicolai - viola
Anja Lechner - violoncel

This album of chamber music is the first in a series of ECM releases by Valentin Silvestrov, intended to spotlight the work of this important Ukrainian composer in the months and years to come. The pieces on the present recording - made with the participation of the composer - were written between 1974 and 2001. Inspired performances by Anja Lechner and Silke Avenhaus, Maacha Deubner and the Rosamunde Quartett bring out the highly individual lyricism and melodic feeling at the heart of Silvestrov's music. Silvestrov himself adds the 'final caesura', with his tender piano performance of his 'Hymn 2001'.

CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Silent Songs

2004

Sergey Yakovenko - bariton
Ilya Scheps - pian

Valentin Silvestrov:
- Silent Songs: I. Five Songs
- Silent Songs: II. Eleven Songs
- Silent Songs: III. Three Songs
- Silent Songs: IV. Five Songs
- Four Songs after Osip Mandelstam

“Silent Songs” is a 24-song cycle dating from 1974-77, and is a grand gamble. For its entirety, almost two hours, its tempo is moderately slow, its texture open and spare, its dynamic hushed. … The actual music is a sort of distilled late-Romantic tonality. The piano accompaniment is made of delicately shaped arpeggios. The harmonies are studded with appoggiaturas (downbeat dissonances that resolve) and surprising (but satisfying) substitutions for where one would expect a progression to go. … Yakovenko is stunning in both his intensity and restraint, and Scheps is an ideally sensitive accompanist … A remarkable, rare flower of a piece.

CD ECM Records Tarkovsky Quartet:

2011

Francois Couturier - pian
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon
Jean-Marc Larche - saxofon sopran

The music on this album, with ist suite like sequence of compositions that flow like a cinematic reverie, comes across as a film-like invitation to a voyage. The spare, gently unfolding and intensely atmospheric melodies and moods deliver an invitation to listen with open ears … and to dream. Couturier has delivered a wondrous offering with compositions that open a path to a secret world. [ Nenad Georgievski, All About Jazz ]

CD ECM Records Jakob Bro, Thomas Morgan, Joey Baron: Bay Of Rainbows

2018

Jakob Bro - chitara
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joey Baron - tobe

“There is no hurry to this music, but there is great depth,” observed London Jazz News about Danish guitarist Jakob Bro’s trio with two kindred-spirit Americans: bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron. This poetically attuned group follows its ECM studio album of 2016, Streams – which The New York Times lauded as “ravishing” – with what Bro calls “a dream come true,” an album recorded live in New York City, over two nights at the Jazz Standard. Bay of Rainbows rolls on waves of contemplative emotion as the three musicians explore five pieces from the guitarist’s catalog, with the gorgeous “Copenhagen” a favorite reprised from Gefion, Bro’s 2015 ECM release.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: The First Quartet (3 CD-Box)

1978-1980
John Abercrombie - chitara
Richie Beirach - pian
George Mraz - contrabas
Peter Donald - tobe
John Abercrombie a avut o colaborare interesanta cu pianistul Richie Beirach , o muzica mai putin jazz-rock ( Gateway ), mai mult meditativa, chiar pastorala. Beirach mai are trei albume , dintre care cel mai interesant este Eon

Setul prezinta albumele Arcade, Abercrombie Quartet si M intr-o varianta remasterizata. Aceste albume nu au mai fost editate pe CD pana acum.

The quartet with Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Peter Donald – John Abercrombie’s first touring band as a leader – was the group in which the guitarist defined some priorities, moving away from a jazz-rock period into a more spacious, impressionistic and original music. Abercrombie and pianist Beirach had a strong musical rapport as improvisers and wrote almost all of the band’s book between them.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Saltash Bells

2012
John Surman - saxofoane, clarinet, bas clarinet, sintetizatoare

John Surman is an exceptionally versatile musician and his instrumental prowess has been showcased in many contexts. Yet his solo albums may be the best sources for insights into his melodic imagination. If you want to understand the wellsprings of his creativity, the solo albums are the place to go; “Saltash Bells” ranks with the best of them.

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Strange Place For Snow

2002

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

E.S.T.'s second U.S. outing offers palatable, often lively acoustic jazz with tantalizing electronic flourishes. It's similar in thrust to the trio's 2001 U.S. debut, Somewhere Else Before, but not as strong melodically. Still, leader/pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Daniel Berglund, and drummer Magnus Öström deliver some heated improvisational exchanges, particularly later in the program on the speedy, almost Mehldau-esque "When God Created the Coffee Break" and the post-bop boogaloo blues "Spunky Sprawl." The trio loses their focus at times, like on the overly long "Behind the Yashmak" and the strangely inert "Serenade for the Renegade." But at their best, E.S.T. displays an alluring lyricism and a subtle, creative use of processed sounds. Öström's drum parts, too, are well-crafted and contemporary. (There's a hidden track at the end, and like the one on Somewhere Else Before, it's a bit out of character.) [ AllMusic ]

CD ACT Vijay Iyer: Historicity

2012

Vijay Iyer - pian
Stephan Crump - bas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe

Vijay Iyer has captured the ears of critics and listeners like only a handful of the most elite jazz pianists since McCoy Tyner, Cecil Taylor, or Misha Mengelberg initially burst onto the scene. There's no other single player who sounds even remotely like him, few who can match his inventive and whimsical sense of play or seriousness, and absolutely nobody who presents the stunning, highly intelligent music he dishes out. CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: The Astounding Eyes Of Rita

2009

Anouar Brahem - oud
Klaus Gesing - bas clarinet
Bjorn Meyer - bas electric
Khaled Yassine - darbouka, bendir

Although Brahem’s music is grounded in the traditions that have grown up around the oud over centuries…, his hybridization of those traditions with the ways of European and American jazz have made his extremely individual canon pointedly modern, and very much an example of a genuine world music. Brahem and Gesing’s beguiling interplay – a mystical poetry… – could not exist without rhythmic drive, supplied here… by Swedish bassist Björn Meyer and Lebanes percussionist Khaled Yassine. … Both he and Meyer drive the lead instrumentalists while also gathering a powerful energy between themselves. Throughout these eight tracks, it’s clear that not only do the clarinet and oud belong together, but the ideas that flow from both players mesh into an emotional and intellectual whole as they thrust and parry in turn, bending toward and away from each other. 1984

Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian, flaute, voce

The partnership of Egberto Gismonti and Nana Vasconelos brought new colours to improvised music on ECM. Sounds of the rainforest are conveyed in Nanas percussion, and Egbertos guitar, for all its sophistication, always retained an earthy directness.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Alma

1996
Egberto Gismonti - pian

This is definitely one of those few recordings I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island.
Alma is sublimely beautiful, sad, and joyous. Many times I have been moved to tears by these compositions.
Even though Gismonte is a renowned guitarist, this recording features piano (with a few hints of synthesizer dropped in very sparingly, to wonderful effect).
Amazing, powerful music. [ Amazon ]

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Musica De Sobrevivencia

1993
Egberto Gismonti - pian, chitara, flaut
Nando Carneiro - sintetizator, chitara, caxixi
Jaques Morelenbaum - violoncel
Zeca Assumpcao - bas

"The opening arpeggios of “Carmem” earn our trust at once with a timeworn and familiar comfort. The pebbles of Gismonti’s plunking notes sink into nostalgic waters, pulled by arco threads into the hands of light that loosed them.

“Bianca” picks at those same threads, frayed like the edge of a carpet in a childhood home through which pass only the ghosts of revolt. Such backward glances are ever-present in Gismonti’s world, whether they are charting the skyward paths of “Lundú #2” or dancing with joy in “Alegrinho #2.” His fingers flutter across piano keys as adeptly as they walk a fingerboard, escorting the group’s cultured sound through a gallery of moods.

Children’s feet map the gray streets of “Forró,” cracked yet held in shape like the shells of hardboiled eggs, and continue to run through “Natura, festa do interior,” a 33.5-minute masterpiece of eroded landscapes. With a sweep as cinematic as it is prosaic, it inscribes a scroll’s worth of love for all things just and familial.

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: AWASE

2018
Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, saxofon alto
Thomy Jordi - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe

Bärtsch speaks of a new-found freedom and flexibility in the approach to the material, with “greater transparency, more interaction, more joy in every performance”. The freedom here extends to revisiting earlier Bärtsch modules alongside new compositions including, for the first time on a Ronin record, a piece by reedman Sha. “We’ve spent a long time working on the new repertoire, really checking out and fine tuning all the details.”

Awase, a term from Aikido, means “moving together” in the sense of matching energies, a fitting metaphor for the dynamic precision, tessellated grooves and balletic minimalism of Ronin today. In the old band, Bärtsch often chose to present Björn Meyer’s flamboyant 6-string bass as a lead instrument. Thomy Jordi’s 4-string bass guitar tends to be deployed within the fabric of the pieces, creatively fulfilling a more traditional bass function and locking in with Kaspar Rast’s powerful drums. With Bärtsch also scaling back his own solo playing, listeners are encouraged to hear the whole music and its layered, shifting approach to interaction in new ways.

Pat Metheny - chitara electrica, bas electric
Lyle Mays - pian , sintetizator, orga, claviaturi
Nana Vasconcelos - tobe, percutie, voce, berimbau

This joint solo effort by Metheny and regular pianist and collaborator Lyle Mays is an impressive outing. In the process of stretching out away from the confines of the quartet setting of prior albums, Metheny and Mays presage the sleeker and more ethereal sound of the band's Geffen years on portions of the title track.

CD ECM Records Chick Corea: Return To Forever

1972

Chick Corea - pian electric
Joe Farrell - flaut, saxofon sopran
Flora Purim - voce, percutie
Stan Clarke - bas
Airto Moreira - tobe, percutie

Steve Huey ( AllMusicGuide ): "The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea's fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke.

It wasn't actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group's second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It's all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach -- hardly the sort of firebrand approach to fusion that Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra were exploring, and far less rooted in funk or rock.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Rites

1998
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, percutie, sintetizatoare
Rainer Bruninghaus - claviaturi
Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Marilyn Mazur - percutie
Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra ( dirijor Jansug Kakhidze )
Bugge Wesseltoft - claviaturi, acordeon, sintetizatoare

Jan Garbarek's powerful new double-album is a magnum opus, and well-titled. 'Rites' suggests initiations, rituals, the archaic, the magical, but also 'rites of passage', and the Norwegian saxophonist reflects, in his choice of material, upon pivotal episodes and influences in his own life and those of his associates.
