CD ECM Records Kayhan Kalhor, Erdal Erzincan: Kula Kulluk Yakisir Mi

2006

Kayhan Kalhor Kamanche
Erdal Erzincan Baglama

Precious little Persian classical music is available to roots enthusiasts in the West who are eager to improve their knowledge of Iran’s culture. In typical enterprising fashion, ECM has seen fit to record an intimate concert between two master musicians who, while emanating from two distinct cultures, are nonetheless linked by a shared border and a shared heritage that extends here to a musical métissage.[...] Pieces vary between traditionally-inspired and improvised numbers, but seam effortlessly into a cohesive whole. .[...] ECM certainly deserve credit for having the courage to put out this ambitious release and it fits comfortably into their continued support for world roots artists who would not otherwise gain a spotlight for themselves. CD ECM Records Dino Saluzzi Group: El Valle De La Infancia

2014

Dino Saluzzi Bandoneon
José María Saluzzi Classical Guitar, Requinto Guitar
Nicolás 'Colacho' Brizuela Classical Guitar
Félix 'Cuchara' Saluzzi Tenor Saxophone, Clarinet
Matías Saluzzi Electric Bass, Double Bass
Quintino Cinalli Drums, Percussion

While he’s a gifted classical and jazz musician, Saluzzi has spent the past three decades exploring a range of Agentinian genres, including zamba, carnavalito and chacarera. […] A song like ‘Churqui’ has the warmth and heart of high-plains music but is also multi-layered and allusive. Through it all, Dino Saluzzi’s bandoneón guides, suggests, riffs, queries and sermonizes. More accessible and even more wondrous than 2006’s excellent ‘Juan Condori’, also on ECM, ‘El Valle de la Infancia’ is a sublime album.

CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Skriabin: Messe Noire

2005

Alexei Lubimov - pian

Igor Stravinsky: Serenade in A for piano
Dimitri Shostakovich: Sonata No. 2 op. 61 for piano
Sergey Prokofiev: Sonata No. 7 op. 83 for piano
Alexander Scriabin: Sonata No. 9 op. 68 for piano

Alexei Lubimov certainly has a fine pianistic pedigree. Born in Moscow in 1944, he was one of the last students of Heinrich Neuhaus, whose previous pupils included both Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. Unlike those greats, however, the core of Lubimov’s repertory has always been the 20th century. … On this disc, the focus is Russian music from the first half of the 20th-century… Lubimov’s relaxed, transparent performance of Shostakovich’s Second Sonata and tightly coiled one of Prokofiev’s Seventh are both hugely impressive, as is his surprisingly emollient account of Scriabin’s “Black Mass” sonata. CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Claude Debussy: Preludes

2012

Alexei Lubimov - pian
Alexei Zuev - pian

Claude Debussy :
- Préludes (Premier Livre)
- Trois Nocturnes
- Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
- Préludes (Deuxième Livre)

Debussy is closer to the expressionism of Schoenberg than to the chiselled sonorities of a Chopin or the extravagant virtuosity of a Liszt, even if his refined art can still be seen in the line of tradition of 19th-century music. This is frequently forgotten in the interpretation as well as the assessment of his oeuvre. Debussy himself decried the concept of musical impressionism because he feared, rightly, that superficial refinement would degenerate into musical mist, concealing the subtleties of a new musical idiom and its structural logic. Thus, for example, instead of heading his 24 “Préludes” in two books with programmatic titles in his autograph score, he appended them at the bottom of the individual pieces.

CD ECM Records Paul Motian Band: Garden Of Eden

2006

Paul Motian - tobe
Chris Cheek - saxofon
Tony Malaby - saxofon tenor
Steve Cardenas - chitara
Ben Monder - chitara
Jakob Bro - chitara
Jerome Harris - bas

Listening to Paul Motian’s music can bring to mind architect Mies van der Rohe’s celebrated adage that his work aimed for an effect of „almost nothing“. In the case of both Mies and Motian, their magisterial art might belie their intent, but fashioning much from less has continued to be as essential a modus operandi for the New York jazz drummer as it was for the German visionary. … Motian’s genius lies in maintaining an understated, lingering tension, thus dissolving any vestiges of New Age moistness. By keeping the bass and guitar parts harmonically indirect, and by positioning substantive, if concise, improvisations from saxophonists Tony Malaby and Chris Cheek, Motian – his now-murmuring, now-biting, always unpredictable drumming commenting on it all from beneath – ensures edginess. CD ECM Records Jakob Bro: Returnings

2018

Jakob Bro - chitara
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

“Danish guitarist Jakob Bro creates magical music, impossible to categorize”, wrote Downbeat recently. On Returnings the magic is intensified as Bro and musical soul-mate Thomas Morgan reconnect with two living legends of European jazz, trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and drummer Jon Christensen. It’s a wonderful combination: Bro’s watercolour guitar sounds, Mikelborg’s soft Milesian flugelhorn, Morgan’s impeccable choice of notes, and Christensen’s free-floating drumming . These components add up to one of the prettiest and subtlest jazz albums of recent times. Returnings was recorded in July 2016 at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

Mark Feldman - vioara

Through the set the alternations of country roughness and European fastidiousness in Feldman, Baron’s and Johnson’s empathy, and Abercrombie’s glistening guitar sound, serve as reminders of what a richly resourceful group this goes on being.
John Fordham, The Guardian

CD ECM Records John Surman: Road To Saint Ives

1990
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet, claviaturi, percutie

Although we might feel tempted to take Road To Saint Ives, one of John Surman’s most stunning solo albums to date, as a portrait of its titular coastal town, Surman states in his liner notes that such is not the case. Aside from the peppering of folk-inspired melodies in the soprano solos, the music breaks its own ground on the way toward unique improvisatory continents.

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Retrospective - Best of

2009

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

Despite the fact that 2008’ Leucocyte, would be the Esbjörn Svensson Trio's final album due to the tragic scuba diving accident that killed Svensson, this was a band that had traversed such wide musical territory they deserved a retrospective treatment simply to sum up what had transpired between the release of 1993’s When Everyone Has Gone and that premature finale. While this 70-minute single disc doesn’t contain any unreleased material, or pre-1999 material (in favor of presenting the trio’s fully developed aesthetic), it is beautifully compiled. [ AllMusic ]

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Good Morning Susie Soho

2000
2000

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

Good Morning Susie Soho peaked on the Swedish pop album chart at 15, above the likes of Whitney Houston, Britney Spears and Pearl Jam, yet was named album of the year for 2000 by the critics in the British magazine Jazzwise. At the same time, Svensson was on the covers of two German jazz magazines, was the cover feature, along with Jacky Terrasson, in the French magazine Jazzman and was hailed by the German news weekly Der Spiegel as the future of jazz piano (together with Brad Mehldau). Clearly then it's not unreasonable to suggest that this album is making waves across Europe. That the cutting edge can live on without necessarily inhabiting volatile experimentation is hardly new, and Svensson's trio, while darkly lyrical, is also fiercely contemporary.

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Strange Place For Snow

2002

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

E.S.T.'s second U.S. outing offers palatable, often lively acoustic jazz with tantalizing electronic flourishes. It's similar in thrust to the trio's 2001 U.S. debut, Somewhere Else Before, but not as strong melodically. Still, leader/pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Daniel Berglund, and drummer Magnus Öström deliver some heated improvisational exchanges, particularly later in the program on the speedy, almost Mehldau-esque "When God Created the Coffee Break" and the post-bop boogaloo blues "Spunky Sprawl." The trio loses their focus at times, like on the overly long "Behind the Yashmak" and the strangely inert "Serenade for the Renegade." But at their best, E.S.T. displays an alluring lyricism and a subtle, creative use of processed sounds. Öström's drum parts, too, are well-crafted and contemporary. (There's a hidden track at the end, and like the one on Somewhere Else Before, it's a bit out of character.) [ AllMusic ]

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Live In London

2005

Esbjorn Svensson - pian
Dan Berglund - bas
Magnus Ostrom - tobe

this splendid release should bring a ray of happiness to old and new listeners alike. e.s.t. live in London captures the band on a magical evening when everything went right. Half the program came from the new-at-the-time Viaticum (ACT, 2005), with the remainder only a couple years older. The trio always loved taking everything beyond how it sounded on record; even the brand-new pieces weren't performed so much as explored, stretched and treated as springboards for some wondrous flights. CD ACT Paolo Fresu / Richard Galliano / Jan Lundgren: Mare Nostrum

2007

Paolo Fresu - trumpet, fluegelhorn
Richard Galliano - accordion, bandoneon, accordina
Jan Lundgren - piano

Mare Nostrum's biggest surprise isn't its instrumentation -- a trio of accordion, trumpet and piano -- but how natural the combination sounds in its execution. Of course, Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordion player Richard Galliano (who is of Italian offspring), and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren are well-known, critically praised jazz musicians who have all been known to eschew musical boundaries and defy genre limitations, so the music on Mare Nostrum -- an album co-led by all three -- shouldn't come as a surprise, nor should its quality, and yet not everybody would have expected such marvelous results. The Long Wait is Over. Mare Nostrum presents 'The Sound of Europe'….. Part Two.Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordionist Richard Galliano and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren form the trio “Mare Nostrum” (meaning our sea, and the Romans' name for the Mediterranean). This band forges connections between the discrete musical cultures of its three protagonists.

Countless listeners worldwide have been captivated by their music, by this distinctive 'sound of Europe.'When the first album “Mare Nostrum” appeared in 2007, critics in many countries were unanimous in their opinion that these three musicians had succeeded, they had found their way to forging something of timeless beauty. This “lyrical jazz ensemble with a keen sense of composure” (Downbeat, USA) had created “a wonderful album of genuine warmth”

Where The River Goes carries the story forward from Rising Grace, Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel’s widely acclaimed 2016 recording, returning his cast of musicians to the same studio in southern France, for more of the intuitive magic and deep listening that characterised the earlier album. “The disc’s ambience,” said Downbeat of Rising Grace, “is meditative yet optimistic and joyful. Percolating grooves propel the flow; elemental melodies and classical harmonies provide signposts.”

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Barre Phillips, Mat Maneri: Angles Of Repose

2004

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor
Barre Phillips - contrabas
Mat Maneri - viola

Joe Maneri, the eccentric, free-improvising saxophonist and pianist continues his long partnership with his son, Mat, a violinist. It’s a relationship that has been deepened by the duo’s collaborations with that great American double-bass player, Barre Phillips. Phillips’ technique and ear allow him to adapt readily to the Maneris’ fondness for lurking in the dangerous territories between the notes in the traditional western scale. Mat Maneri often plays an electric violin, and is frequently tumultuously energetic with it, but he restricts himself to viola on this session, and the set is entirely acoustic. …

This music is difficult to describe, as it blends myriad styles and forms spanning several cultures and centuries, but it speaks to the heart directly with a beauty and profundity that only the most obtuse listener could remain indifferent to. … Besides being a recording of extraordinary depth and dimensionality, Le Voyage de Sahar also serves as a master class to players of any stringed instrument, for Brahem’s phrasing, articulation, ornamentation, and sense of space are often simply breathtaking.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Blue Maqams

2017

Anouar Brahem - oud
Jack DeJohnette - tobe
Dave Holland - contrabas
Django Bates - pian

‘Blue Maqams’ will not only go down as one of the year's best ECM Records releases; it's a classic-in-the-making that should ultimately be considered one of the label's very best recordings in its nearly fifty-year history. [ John Kelman, All About Jazz ]

This glitzy lineup features his bass-playing soulmate Dave Holland, drums star Jack DeJohnette, and a wild card in the form of the UK’s Django Bates on piano. The result achieves a spellbinding balance between gently melodic Mediterranean song forms and the one-touch rhythmic elasticity and melodic ingenuity of the best jazz. The presence of Bates (producer Manfred Eicher’s idea, Brahem never having heard the English maverick before) is an inspiration, for his lyrical restraint, creative spaciousness, and diverse references. […] It’s a real meeting of hearts and minds. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Souvenance

2015

Souvenance - Music for oud, quartet and string orchestra

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Klaus Gesing - bas clarinet, saxofon soprano
Bjorn Meyer - bas electric

The music of Souvenance, by turns graceful, hypnotic, and taut and starkly dramatic, was recorded in 2014 – six years after oud-master Anouar Brahem’s last ECM album, The Astounding Eyes of Rita. “It took a long time to write this music,” he acknowledges, noting that his emotional world had been usurped by the unfolding story of political upheaval sweeping first through Tunisia then through the neighbouring countries.

Meaning ‘remembrance’, ‘Souvenance’, is the Tunisian oud master’s new album after a five year gap following quartet recording ‘The Astounding Eyes of Rita’ also on ECM that also featured Gesing and Meyer. In reuniting his former colleagues, Brahem has written a commanding and all embracing set that seamlessly captures and portrays emotions ranging from despair to joy, and pessimism to optimism that shows a real depth of vision. […] This is a wonderful album and Brahem should be congratulated for bringing together such passion and emotion in a set that for all its serenity speaks volumes. [ Nick Lea, Jazz Views ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem: Madar

1994
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Anouar Brahem - oud
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla

Despite the loveliness of these interactions, the album works best in solitary. Brahem’s contemplative solo, “Bahia,” treks over twilit mountains with aching footsteps, carrying us as if by palanquin into a vale of lost intentions. The wind of his percussiveness shakes the boughs of leafless trees and sends their dead seeds clicking to the ground like sand against a window. And in the rhythmic cast of “Jaw,” Hussain emotes lifetimes in a single beat of his tabla, thus offering some intensely lucid moments. He returns to the fold in “Qaws,” giving voice to those waiting eyes at last with solid excitement. An odd piano “Epilogue” (sounding like a chord outline for a studio track left behind) leads us out.
