Under the direction of Bryan Ferry, Roxy moved toward relatively straightforward territory, adding greater layers of piano and heavy guitars. Even without the washes of Eno's synthesizers, Roxy's music remains unsettling on occasion, yet in this new incarnation, they favor more measured material, whether it's the reflective "A Song for Europe" or the shifting textures of "Psalm." Even the rockers, such as the surging "Street Life" and the segmented "Mother of Pearl," are distinguished by subtle songwriting that emphasizes both Ferry's tortured glamour and Roxy's increasingly impressive grasp of sonic detail. "

VINIL Universal Records Cecilia Bartoli, Sol Gabetta - Dolce Duello

The Cappella Gabetta, with cellist Sol Gabetta joined by a Baroque chamber ensemble led by her brother Andrés, has attracted top-notch vocal collaborators: first Vivica Genaux on an album of music by Handel and Hasse, and now no less than Cecilia Bartoli on this collection of Baroque arias featuring solo cello. It may sound like an arcane concept, and the breezy project graphics may have little or nothing to do with it, but the two performers do seem to have fun with the music and to deliver the "sweet duels" promised by the title. Sample the enticing "What passion cannot music raise and quell," from the Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, for a taste of the two "voices" that complement each other as well as in any vocal duet. The performers went to some lengths to find arias with this particular configuration, and it speaks well of their efforts that they've located some rather rare works that stick in the ear. The aria by Haydn's teacher Porpora does not set off vocal fireworks, but it must have been written to showcase the talents of a cellist, and it's as satisfying a duet today as it was on the day it came into existence. The final Cello Concerto No. 10 in D major of Boccherini does not quite fit with the rest stylistically; one of Vivaldi's cello concertos might have been a better bet. Yet this is in the main a fine offbeat choice featuring some star performers.

With even more of the Fairport Convention crew helping him out -- including bassist Dave Pegg and drummer Dave Mattacks along with, again, a bit of help from Richard Thompson -- as well as John Cale and a variety of others, Drake tackled another excellent selection of songs on his second album. Demonstrating the abilities shown on Five Leaves Left didn't consist of a fluke, Bryter Layter featured another set of exquisitely arranged and performed tunes, with producer Joe Boyd and orchestrator Robert Kirby reprising their roles from the earlier release.

Pitchfork: Twelve years since D'Angelo released his dirt-encrusted soul opus in the first month of the new millennium, we have yet to see a follow-up. Heard now on this 2xLP reissue, Voodoo still stands as a paranoid, mysterious, and challenging statement that somehow managed to scale the industry.

Billboard: The most important artists merge their unique, idiosyncratic visions with popular success. This is especially true of all the figures D'Angelo admires -- the people Questlove famously described as "Yoda's" in an interview with Toure (a group that includes James Brown, Al Green, Joni Mitchell, and Prince). Voodoo represents D's ticket into the Yoda club. The album pulled in two Grammy's, spawned a hit in "Untitled," and earned a platinum certification. It showed up on numerous critics' year-end-lists in 2000. In 2013, Bob Christgau wrote that Voodoo is "widely regarded as the greatest R&B album of the post-Prince era.

In 1967, John Martyn became the first white solo act to sign with Island Records. While this is notable in the history of the label, his initial release, London Conversation, on the other hand, stands as a mere footnote. The record, though incorporating touches of blues and his characteristic guitar and vocal, doesn't really prepare you for what's to come from Martyn. The album is a basic, no-frills, guitar and voice effort, although one track, the droning dulcimer and flute-driven "Rolling Home," shows Martyn's urge to stretch, which would become much more evident in the coming years. His vocal delivery is traditionally British, while his playing is steeped in the eclectic folk of British artists such as Davey Graham and Bert Jansch, as well as American blues and folk. London Conversation, whose material (written primarily by Martyn) reflects the era and his age (18 years old), comes across as a young, although soon to be important artist looking for a voice.
