ClassicRockReview: "Earlier this year (2015), Brothers In Arms re-entered the UK Album Charts, making it a total of 356 weeks it has spent on those charts. It is one of Earth’s best-selling albums, having sold over 30 million copies worldwide. Another successful world tour followed, including 21 straight nights playing in Sydney, Australia in 1986. However, another long break after the tour led to a temporary breakup of the band, and they would not release another studio album until 1991, six years after Brothers In Arms."

VINIL Universal Records Peter Gabriel - 1 Car

In stoc

AllMusic: Peter Gabriel tells why he left Genesis in "Solsbury Hill," the key track on his 1977 solo debut. Majestically opening with an acoustic guitar, the song finds Gabriel's talents gelling, as the words and music feed off each other, turning into true poetry. It stands out dramatically on this record, not because the music doesn't work, but because it brilliantly illustrates why Gabriel had to fly on his own. Though this is undeniably the work of the same man behind The Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, he's turned his artiness inward, making his music coiled, dense, vibrant. There is still some excess, naturally, yet it's the sound of a musician unleashed, finally able to bend the rules as he wishes. That means there are less atmospheric instrumental sections than there were on his last few records with Genesis, as the unhinged bizarreness in the arrangements, compositions, and productions, in tracks such as the opener "Moribund the Burgermeister" vividly illustrate.
[...]

Yes, it's an imperfect album, but that's a byproduct of Gabriel's welcome risk-taking -- the very thing that makes the album work, overall.

VINIL Universal Records Peter Gabriel-Scratch

Rolling Stone : "Despite its occasional lapses. Peter Gabriel is a tremendous record. At the very least, Gabriel has discarded the florid hedging that’s dominated his work since Genesis. He’s not backing off from anything now, including his excesses. He flinches, it’s true, but he never yields. For once, you get an idea of where the artist stands and what he’s afraid of. In such songs as “Intruder” and “Games without Frontiers,” in which the booming, almost disco-style bass drum slows to an ebbing pulse while the guitars and synthesizers jangle like wracked nerves and the vocals crackle with detached doom, Gabriel’s music resembles his cover portrait: features in disintegration, slowly melting away, all distinctions disappearing and not a damn thing anyone can do about it. Peter Gabriel has seen a hellish future, and there’s no exit."

VINIL Universal Records Portishead - Dummy

In stoc

The Guardian: "Twenty-five years ago, during the summer of Blur’s Parklife and Oasis’s Definitely Maybe, a darker, stranger record was released that would soon become huge. Its title and mood was inspired by a 1970s TV drama of the same name, about a young deaf woman in Yorkshire who becomes a prostitute. The lyrics spoke of emotional extremes, sung in an extraordinary, rural-tinged, English blues by the Devon-born Beth Gibbons, of “the blackness, the darkness, forever” in Wandering Star, or of the feeling that “nobody loves me, it’s true, not like you do” in Sour Times.

Its sound, woven together by Geoff Barrow and Adrian Utley, helped define what is known today in music as hauntology, the sampling of older, spectral sounds to evoke deeper cultural memories (Boards of Canada’s TV-sampling electronica, Burial’s dubstep, and the Ghost Box label’s folk horror soundworlds would follow their lead). But despite its starkness, Dummy became a triple-platinum seller and a Mercury prizewinner, perhaps because it struck a nerve in what Barrow calls our “sonic unconscious… when sounds can merge with other sounds from somewhere else, and ultimately create emotion".

VINIL Universal Records Portishead: Third

In stoc

The Guardian: Torpor fosters distemper. That's what the decade-long gestation of Portishead's Third album suggests from the moment it kicks in. The smoothness of old is supplanted by surface noise on opening track, 'Silence'. Those familiar open guitar chords descend into something more menacing - the only constant, the spidery vocal of Beth Gibbons, still obsessively pacing around her pained and private world.

The fluidity of Portishead's music was always something of an illusion. Rather, it was painstakingly constructed with a maddening precision. That tensile quality is even more evident on Third. Edgy, wary, snarling and dissonant, the music mirrors the morbidity of Beth Gibbon's lyrics, accentuating the unsettling quality of a voice that is closer to the hysteric tones of Sixties free jazz innovator Patty Waters than any conventional pop vocal. Beset by an almost primal sense of insecurity, you get the feeling Gibbons is capable of mining misery from bliss. She even admits as much in the opening lines of 'Nylon Smile': 'I'd like to laugh at what you said but I just can't find a smile.'

The album's first single, 'Machine Gun' takes Portishead's minimalist aesthetic to extremes yet still manages to sound epic, pitting Gibbons's haunted vocal against a metallic beat. There are moments of lightness, but the prevailing mood is of a group who have succumbed to a riptide of dour emotion. Never has a pit of despair sounded so inviting."

VINIL Universal Records Slayer - Reign In Blood

Rolling Stone : "

One of the most important albums in thrash metal history, 1986’s Reign in Blood was the record that propelled Slayer into the big time, while throwing down a spiked gauntlet for all contemporary and future thrash practitioners. Released 30 years ago today, the Rick Rubin–produced LP packed an hour’s worth of ferocious riffage into just 28 minutes and 58 seconds.

VINIL ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Barzakh

1990

Anouar Brahem - oud
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Lassad Hosni - percutie

Recorded in 1990, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority. “Phenomenal…this is pure Arab music, without ‘world music’ frippery,” wrote Karl Lippegaus in Stereo. Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni, whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café. Beyond the improvisatory brilliance, Barzakh gave notice also of Brahem’s gift for writing arresting themes and luminous melody, as illustrated by “Raf Raf”, “Parfum de Gitane”, “Kerkenah” and other pieces here.

Initially published in April 1991, vinyl is reissued in October 2017 as audiophile 180g pressing.
