VINIL ECM Records Jan Garbarek: I Took Up The Runes

1990
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Rainer Bruninghaus - pian
Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie
Manu Katche - tobe
Bugge Wesseltoft - sintetizator
Ingor Antte Ailu Gaup - voce

ecmreviews:
"By 1990, Jan Garbarek had for decades been searching for that one key, navigating a landscape of peaks and valleys, only to find it slumbering within the runes which, with this album, he eponymously took up. [...]

Balancing note and movement, Garbarek hones something truly special in the five-part “Molde Canticle,” which draws out the album’s deepest anatomies. Above all, the piece is about time. It speaks in a language that moves us. The gyroscopic quality of Part 2 hums around the centrifugal force of Garbarek’s lyricism as he scales ever higher.

VINIL ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Le Pas Du Chat Noir

Pentru prima data pe vinil !

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon

The album is like a sad rhapsody, full of shadowy mirages and blue echoes, the prevailing melancholy not dour and heavy but rather light and cloudy. Names like Satie, Debussy, Mounir Bachir, even Eno in acoustic mode keep flashing across your mental screen as you listen. This is academy music with no clothes on, naked and awkward, honest and beautiful. Shut your eyes and you could be in the port of Dar el Baida, a seagull swooping over a grey-blue sea and huge cranes and rusty hulled freighters in the background, the light and forgetful breeze brushing your cheek. Le pas du chat noir features uncontrived performances of cat-like agility – soft, bright-eyed and magical. It is a brilliant piece of work. [ Andy Morgan, Songlines ]

VINIL ECM Records Jan Garbarek: In Praise Of Dreams

Pentru prima data pe vinil !

Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Kim Kashkashian - viola
Manu Katche - tobe

Following a six-year break from recording, with only a guest appearance on bassist Miroslav Vitous' Universal Syncopations ('03) and a :Rarum compilation ('02), Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek returns with his first album of new material since Rites ('98). In Praise of Dreams continues along the path established by such recordings as Legend of the Seven Dreams , I Took Up The Runes , and Visible World. But while Garbarek demonstrates the same penchant for deceptively simple pieces with almost anthem-like themes, his collaboration with violist Kim Kashkashian and drummer Manu Katche results in something richer, something deeper than what has come before. Andreas Ulvo - pian
Audun Erlien - bas
Torstein Lofthus - tobe

A larger lineup and more detailed arrangements while never losing the lyrical path of the soloist the work is consistently revolving around. Textured layers of lyrical inventiveness. Engaging. While the admitted influences of this release range from calssical to pop, it is the brilliant use of these “pop sensibilities” that make “Skala” a sonic delight. AllMusicGuide : "Pat Metheny's credibility with the jazz community went way up with the release of this package, a superb two-CD collaboration with a quartet of outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their electric commercial successes. [...]

The two original LPs were organized so that the more distinctive Metheny fusions were on sides one and four and the overt jazz tracks occupied sides two and three."

VINIL ECM Records Chick Corea: Return To Forever

1972

Chick Corea - pian electric
Joe Farrell - flaut, saxofon sopran
Flora Purim - voce, percutie
Stan Clarke - bas
Airto Moreira - tobe, percutie

Steve Huey ( AllMusicGuide ): "The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea's fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke.

It wasn't actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group's second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It's all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach -- hardly the sort of firebrand approach to fusion that Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra were exploring, and far less rooted in funk or rock.

VINIL ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Belonging

1974

Keith Jarrett - pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor
Palle Danielsson - bas
Jon Christensen - tobe

AllMusic: "On Keith Jarrett's first recording with his "European" quartet -- Jan Garbarek (sax), Palle Danielsson (bass), Jon Christensen (drums) -- he stakes out somewhat less abrasive territory than that which his "American" foursome was exploring at this time.

Garbarek sports a neutral, vibratoless tone that occasionally reaches an emotional climax; the rhythm section is supportive and just loose enough. The record operates at its strongest level when Jarrett locks the quartet into his winning gospel mode on "'Long as You Know You're Living Yours" and the tense drive of "Spiral Dance"; the reflective numbers are less compelling. Still, this LP-turned-CD successfully bucked the powerful electric trends of its time and holds up well today."

VINIL ECM Records Dominic Miller: Silent Light

2017

Dominic Miller - chitara, bas electric

Miller's ECM label debut offers a pleasant spin through some colorful tones of the places his travels have taken him. […] Silent Light is a recording as peaceful and evocative as its title suggests: exotic motifs convey moods from several continents, chord structures can be left ambiguous or implied rather than stated, and extra sounds are sprinkled around with a light touch only where they're judged to add something. 1978 - album reeditat in 2017 dupa benzile master analogice
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Bill Connors - chitara
John Taylor - pian, orga
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

Places brings together another congregation of musicians that could only come from ECM. Drummer Jack DeJohnette lassoes his scurrying loops to the acoustic hooks of guitarist Bill Connors, while John Taylor supplements most of the cargo with organ. At the helm of this vessel is Jan Garbarek, whose saxophonism starts high and goes only higher. With cumulative notecraft and a heartfelt commitment to atmosphere, he and Taylor unwrap a lush nexus in the stunning opener.

Ulf W. O. Holand - sampling
Morten Molster - chitara electrica
Roger Ludvigsen - chitara acustica, percutie, dulcimer
Rune Arnesen - tobe
Reidar Skar - sampling, claviaturi

ecmreviews:
"Khmer marks a monumental occasion: namely, the debut leader date of Nils Petter Molvær. Fresh off the boat of Small Labyrinths, the Norwegian trumpet player came out of left field with one of those rare albums that becomes second nature after only one listen. NPM, as he is also known, epitomizes ECM’s transcendental spirit with a collage of unbridled passion and integrity. Combining influences as diverse, if not also as intimately connected, as rock, ambient, dub, techno, and jazz, he deploys his mercurial fleet in a sea of samples, breakbeats, and smooth dives. Also carrying over from the Small Labyrinths session is hard rocker Eivind Aarset, who bookends the album with his e-bow guitar treatments and foils the delicate additions of free improviser Morten Mølster along the way. Mari Boine band regular Roger Ludvigsen adds six strings and more, playing prepared guitar and dulcimer, and along with drummer Rune Arnesen fleshes out the band’s acoustic signature. Yet it is keyboardist Reidar Skår and co-producer Ulf W. Ø. Holand who give the music just the kick it needs to hit the ground running. Holand, whose Lydlab is two floors above Oslo’s hallowed Rainbow Studio, provided samples and enough studio time to help shape the album into what it has become, while Skår brought his magic touch to said samples and others, manipulating them into an organic whole. The result is a classic that fits snugly alongside ECM’s all-time best.

This evergreen stands tall in the ECM forest. There is no sense of competition, only mutual reveling in a distinctly nuclear sound. One could easily call it fusion, but if anything it is fused with itself, for it has created every element it seeks to combine. Timeless indeed.

Guitarist John Abercrombie – who has recorded as a leader for ECM since 1974 – returns with a second album by his quartet featuring Marc Copland on piano, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling 39 Steps, the group’s 2013 album, the Financial Times said: “The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leader’s warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Copland’s piano… with bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions.

VINIL ECM Records Jimmy Giuffre 3, 1961

1961

Jimmy Giuffre - saxofon tenor, clarinet
Paul Bley - pian
Steve Swallow - contrabas

Acest dublu album reprezinta reeditarea albumelor "Thesis" si "Fusion", inregistrate la Verve Records (remixate, remasterizate si cu cateva piese nepublicate anterior).

The music is Giuffre at his finest -- at that point, finding a language with his two collaborators, pianist Paul Bley and bassist Steve Swallow (who hadn't made the permanent switch to electric then) -- that was outside even the avant-garde at the time, yet in the tradition enough for some listeners and critics to be able to hold onto as modern jazz. Both recordings make use of a profound use of subtlety in gesture -- this is more true of Giuffre and Bley than Swallow, but without a drummer, the guy had a tough gig to hold down -- and a creative use of space, one that allowed for a free contrapuntal interplay between musicians while keeping their distance in order to keep the music in front of them. In other words, space was used as a way to communicate what not to do rather than what to play. [ AllMusic ]

VINIL ECM Records Keith Jarrett: The Koln Concert

1975 - Keith Jarrett - pian

Recorded in 1975 at the Koln Opera House and released the same year, this disc has, along with its revelatory music, some attendant cultural baggage that is unfair in one sense: Every pot-smoking and dazed and confused college kid -- and a few of the more sophisticated ones in high school -- owned this as one of the truly classic jazz records, along with Bitches Brew, Kind of Blue, Take Five, A Love Supreme, and something by Grover Washington, Jr. Such is cultural miscegenation. It also gets unfairly blamed for creating George Winston, but that's another story.

VINIL ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden: Last Dance

2007

Keith Jarrett - pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

All of which made Jasmine (ECM, 2010) a release worth celebrating. Recorded at Jarrett's home (in his Cavelight Studio), it was an intimate conversation between two old friends—Jarrett and Haden—who'd not recorded together in over three decades, and who were brought together when the pianist participated in Reto Cardiff's film about the bassist, Rambling Boy (2009).

Some things are never lost, and if Jasmine proved anything, it's that the chemistry shared by Jarrett and Haden may have been on hiatus for 30 years, but was no less potent, no less profound, when they found themselves recording a series of standards at Jarrett's home with no rehearsals barring a few quick run-throughs of the changes. The collaboration must have been a fruitful one, because Last Dance comes from those same sessions, another full 76 minutes of music comprised, once again, of songs culled from jazz standards and the Great American Songbook. VINIL ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Still Live

1986

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - bas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic: "Once Keith Jarrett gets into a concept, he likes to keep those tapes rolling. This two-disc live outpouring from a Standards Trio gig at Munich's Philharmonic Hall was the biggest offering from this group up to that time (it wouldn't hold that distinction for long) -- and once again, Jarrett treats his brace of pop and jazz standards with unpredictable, often eloquently melodic and structural originality.

To cite a pair of highlights: "Autumn Leaves" always seems to bring out an endless flow of invention from Jarrett, and "The Song Is You" gets off to a rollicking start and maintains a nearly relentless energy level for 17 minutes, closing with a Spanish vamp. Again, the rapport with his onetime jazz-rock associate, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock is total; DeJohnette's mastery of shifting cymbal patterns while maintaining the pulse acts on the trio like a loose tether made of carbon steel. There is a considerable amount of Jarrett vocalizing, though; sometimes he sounds like a tortured animal. "

VINIL ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Yesterdays

2001

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic (Thom Jurek): "Yesterdays is the third title ECM has released by Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette (dubbed "the standards trio"). The first two -- The Out-of-Towners released in 2004 and My Foolish Heart issued in 2007 -- were actually recorded later than this live date recorded in Tokyo in April of 2001.

This also marks a first in the pianist's career: the George Gershwin tune "You Took Advantage of Me" appeared on My Foolish Heart in a very different arrangement, making this the first time Jarrett has ever employed a single track on two consecutive albums. On My Foolish Heart Jarrett used a full-on ragtime intro to the tune. Here, he employs a denser harmonic construction based on its changes and melodic frame. When the band enters, the pop and swing in the tune become pronounced, standing in the same universe as ragtime (which is more than likely the reason Jarrett employed it before) but also much more sophisticated and harmonically complex. VINIL ECM Records Jack DeJohnette: In Movement

2016

Jack DeJohnette: tobe, pian, percutie electronica
Ravi Coltrane: saxofoane
Matthew Garrison: bas electric, electronice

"There is something of the "six degrees of separation" theory at work in this newly formed trio, led loosely, by the great Jack DeJohnette. The drummer/multi-instrumentalist works in the company of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane whose lineage is well known, and bassist/electronic artist Matthew Garrison whose father Jimmy Garrison was the bassist in John Coltrane's classic quartet. And, of course, DeJohnette, early in his career, played with the fathers of both of his trio mates. [ AllAboutJazz ]
