CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer - Bach: Sonatas and Partitas For Violin Solo

2005
Gidon Kremer - vioara

Gidon Kremer’s return to J. S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas is a major event. Kremer’s first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and in the past few years the only solo piece of Bach’s which he has performed with any regularity has been the “Chaconne”.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff / Miklos Perenyi - Beethoven: Complete Music For Piano And Violoncello

Andras Schiff - pian
Miklos Perenyi - violoncel

“Beethoven’s five sonatas for piano and cello show in a nutshell the same evolution that the 32 piano sonatas show,” said András Schiff recently. “You have this wonderful young lion Beethoven in the opus 5 sonatas, you have the opus 69, the A major, which stands in the middle of his life, and then you have these wonderful two works, opus 102, which are at the gates of the late style, the last phase. And these are in a way experimental works, but fully crystallized.” Superbly played by Schiff and Miklós Perényi, these may be the definitive recordings of Beethoven’s music for piano and cello.

CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Kremerata Baltica - Mieczyslaw Weinberg

2014

Gidon Kremer - vioara, dirijor
Daniil Grishin - viola
Giedre Dirvanauskaite - violoncel
Daniil Trifonov - pian
Kremerata Baltica

Mieczysław Weinberg:
- Sonate Nr. 3 Op. 126
- Trio Op. 48
- Sonatine Op. 46
- Concertino Op. 42
- Symphonie No. 10 Op. 98

The affinities between the music of Mieczyslaw Weinberg and his good friend Dmitri Shoastakovich are as obvious as the Beethoven/Brahms connection, which caused the latter to say ‘Any fool can see that’. Those affinites permeate the early works here, Weinberg’s sole String Trio, the sonatina for violin and piano, and the concertino for violin and strings, all written shortly after the second World War. The later pieces – the Symphony No 10 of 1968 and the Sonata No 3 for solo violin of 1979 – are of a different cut, more adventurous and often sonically harsher. The gripping solo sonata is a real discovery, and Gidon Kremer regards it as worth a 20-century place alongside Bartók’s towering solo sonata. He certainly handles the work with that level of conviction. [ Michael Dervan, Irish Times ]

CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Claude Debussy: Preludes

2012

Alexei Lubimov - pian
Alexei Zuev - pian

Claude Debussy :
- Préludes (Premier Livre)
- Trois Nocturnes
- Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
- Préludes (Deuxième Livre)

Debussy is closer to the expressionism of Schoenberg than to the chiselled sonorities of a Chopin or the extravagant virtuosity of a Liszt, even if his refined art can still be seen in the line of tradition of 19th-century music. This is frequently forgotten in the interpretation as well as the assessment of his oeuvre. Debussy himself decried the concept of musical impressionism because he feared, rightly, that superficial refinement would degenerate into musical mist, concealing the subtleties of a new musical idiom and its structural logic. Thus, for example, instead of heading his 24 “Préludes” in two books with programmatic titles in his autograph score, he appended them at the bottom of the individual pieces.

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Live In London

In stoc

2005

Esbjorn Svensson - pian
Dan Berglund - bas
Magnus Ostrom - tobe

this splendid release should bring a ray of happiness to old and new listeners alike. e.s.t. live in London captures the band on a magical evening when everything went right. Half the program came from the new-at-the-time Viaticum (ACT, 2005), with the remainder only a couple years older. The trio always loved taking everything beyond how it sounded on record; even the brand-new pieces weren't performed so much as explored, stretched and treated as springboards for some wondrous flights. 1980

Pat Metheny - chitara acustica si electrica
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe
Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor
Michael Brecker - saxofon tenor

AllMusicGuide : "Pat Metheny's credibility with the jazz community went way up with the release of this package, a superb two-CD collaboration with a quartet of outstanding jazz musicians that dared to be uncompromising at a time when most artists would have merely continued pursuing their electric commercial successes. [...]

The two original LPs were organized so that the more distinctive Metheny fusions were on sides one and four and the overt jazz tracks occupied sides two and three."

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek Group: Dresden

2007
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, flaut
Rainer Bruninghaus - pian, claviaturi
Yuri Daniel - bas
Manu Katche - tobe

AllMusic (Thom Jurek):
"It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, Dresden: In Concert is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. He has recorded sparely in 21st century thus far, but he has toured regularly. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. Dresden is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets -- from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation -- to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti, Charlie Haden, Jan Garbarek: Carta De Amor

1981
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

A fascinating set from three strong and contrasting musical personalities: Norwegian saxophonist, Brazilian guitarist-pianist, and US bassist making purposeful and creative music together on this previously unreleased live recording.

“Carta de Amor” documents music captured at Munich’s Amerika Haus in April, 1981. Two years on from the much-loved albums “Magico” and “Folk Songs”, the trio’s improvisational empathy and sensibilities were further honed by experiences as a touring group.

Repertoire includes five pieces from Gismonti’s pen, with the title track heard in two variations, opening and closing this enthralling double album. Also heard here are Garbarek’s folk song arrangements and an extended, freewheeling version of his composition “Spor”. Charlie Haden brings in “La Pasionaria”, from the repertoire of the Liberation Music Orchestra and “All That Is Beautiful”, not previously documented on disc.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: After The Fall

2018
Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

The group colloquially known as “the Standards trio” has made many outstanding recordings, and After The Fall must rank with the very best of them. “I was amazed to hear how well the music worked,” writes Keith Jarrett in his liner note. “For me, it’s not only a historical document, but a truly great concert.” This performance – in Newark, New Jersey in November 1998 – marked Jarrett’s return to the concert stage after a two year hiatus. Joined by improvising partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, he glides and soars through classics of the Great American Songbook including “The Masquerade Is Over”, “Autumn Leaves”, “When I Fall In Love” and “I’ll See You Again”. There are also breath-taking accounts of hallowed bebop tunes including Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From The Apple”, Bud Powell’s “Bouncin’ With Bud” and Sonny Rollins’s “Doxy”.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: The Carnegie Hall Concert

Septembrie 2005

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"After a long preparatory breath, the experienced gardener digs his fingers into the soil: this is what it feels like to put on Keith Jarrett’s The Carnegie Hall Concert. The ensuing harvest offers a veritable rainbow of sonic fruits and vegetables, each with its distinct shape, texture, and flavor. Such is Jarrett’s post-millennial approach, which finds just as much depth in the self-fulfilling vignette as in the arcing narratives of years past. From heartaching lyricism (Part III) to mystical convolutions (Part IV), elegiac resolutions (Part V) to anthemic revelries (Part VII), the language of contrast is alive and well.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Nude Ants

1979 - inregistrare live la Village Vanguard, New York

Keith Jarrett - pian, percutie
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

ecmreviews.com:
"Something about Keith Jarrett’s very presence seems to draw out from even the most highly regarded musicians unexpected levels of performance, commitment, and above all faith in the musical moment. Nude Ants, easily one of his most uplifting live dates (this time at the Village Vanguard) on record and the pinnacle of his quartet activities, exemplifies this to the nth degree.

In its European incarnation, Jarrett’s menagerie of yesteryear opens its gates quietly and smoothly with “Chant Of The Soil.” Jarrett digs in alongside one of the most engaging rhythm sections one could ask for (Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen). The liveness of the performance comes across early in “Innocence.”

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Rio

Aprilie 2011

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"On 9 April 2011, Keith Jarrett took the stage at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro for a concert of improvised music at the piano. Under any other artist’s name, this formula might ring as flat as the disc it’s printed on, bat Jarrett’s fingertips those keys do something unknown even to him. Like a marionette that comes to impossible life in the hands of a master puppeteer, an instrument before Jarrett is a broken circle waiting for its final arc. Rather than hang that circle as one would a mirror on the wall, he rolls it as a child would a hoop down the street. Such is the spirit of abandon that opens his every note like laughter at something intangible, and points to a destination so far away that it returns to its origin.

CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad: Vinding's Music

Ketil Bjørnstad - pian
Gunilla Süssmann - pian
Jie Zhang - pian
Norwegian Radio Orchestra , dirijor Christian Eggen

A double album as literary soundtrack, its release coinciding with Norwegian publication of the one-volume edition of Ketil Bjørnstad’s highly-acclaimed fictional trilogy “To Music”/”The River”/”The Lady In The Valley”, and with the author’s 60th birthday on April 25. After keeping his musical and writing activities separate for decades, Ketil dissolved the boundaries with his “Vinding” books: “When I had the idea of writing a trilogy about the young piano student Aksel Vinding, I realised that I would have to grant music access to my world of writing. This felt surprisingly liberating, almost like a confession. Music is a powerful source of inspiration for many writers, and so it was for me when I relived, through the novels, my experiences as a young piano student in Oslo in the late 1960s and early 1970s.” When the trilogy was completed, a concert of music referenced in Bjørnstad’s narrative was mounted in Oslo. Pianists Jie Zhang and Gunilla Süssman, with the Norwegian Radio Orchestra, performed compositions by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Ravel, Rachmaninoff, and Barber, with conductor Christian Eggen also heard as piano soloist in the second movement of Mozart’s A major piano concerto. A recording from the concert comprises volume two of the present set. Disc one features Bjørnstad as improvising solo pianist, meditating upon themes related to his protagonist.

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: Live

2007

Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet, alto saxofon
Bjorn Meyer - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe
Andi Pupato - percutie

Ronin around the world: a powerful and atmospheric concert recording with music captured in Germany, Austria, Holland, England, and Japan, a double-album which transmits the live impact of Nik Bärtsch’s band and its enveloping modular groove music of interlocking rhythms. It’s also a set that marks the end of an era and the transition into a new one. These are the last recordings of Ronin with Björn Meyer’s elegantly-leaping bass guitar as one of the lead voices, and Bärtsch views the album as partly a tribute to Meyer’s long tenure with the band. New bassist Thomy Jordi, meanwhile, makes an impressive entrance on “Modul 55”, but it’s most often the whole band, as a unified field of force, that commands the listener’s attention.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff - Franz Schubert

Andras Schiff - Fortepiano

Ungarische Melodie in h-Moll D 817
Franz Schubert - Sonate in G-Dur D 894 (op.78)
Franz Schubert - Moments musicaux D 780 (op.94)
Allegretto in c-Moll D 915
Franz Schubert - Vier Impromptus D 935 (op.142)
Franz Schubert - Sonate in B-Dur D 960

Try the exquisite Alegretto in C minor, D915, once memorably recorded by Schnabel, for a vivid sample of the world of sound that the Brodmann opens up (disc 2, tr I); or the first movement of the B flat major Sonata, D960, for a picture of how it matches the ambition of Schubert’s writing on the broadest scale (disc 2, tr 6). […] I cannot think of anyone of his caliber who has mastered the fortepiano as well as the modern piano and shown such distinction on both. In Schubert he has a claim to be considered sovereign among today’s players, carrying forward the reading and interpretation of him into areas that others have not fully explored.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff - Robert Schumann: Geistervariationen

2011

Andras Schiff - Piano

András Schiff is not one to follow the crowd, so even in this much-recorded repertoire you know you can expect something different. These Schumann interpretations are head and shoulders above any other recent releases of the composer’s piano works. There is astonishing clarity of line and texture, intellectual focus in every interpretive decision, and a palpable sense of immediacy all too rare in studio recordings of piano music.
