András Schiff Piano

Bach - Das Wohltemperierte Clavier - Buch I, BWV 846-869
Bach - Das Wohltemperierte Clavier - Buch II, BWV 870-893

As a young pianist, András Schiff earned wide esteem for his 1980s recordings of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach; in recent years, as part of his long-term relationship with ECM, he has gone back to Bach as a sage veteran, earning more acclaim for his New Series recordings of the Goldberg Variations (2001) and the six Partitas (2007). The New York Times said, “Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon. He doesn’t so much perform it as emit, breathe it.” In August 2011, Schiff turned his focus to the 48 preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier, making studio recordings of both books in the Auditorium Radiosvizzera Italiana, Lugano.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff / Miklos Perenyi - Beethoven: Complete Music For Piano And Violoncello

Andras Schiff - pian
Miklos Perenyi - violoncel

“Beethoven’s five sonatas for piano and cello show in a nutshell the same evolution that the 32 piano sonatas show,” said András Schiff recently. “You have this wonderful young lion Beethoven in the opus 5 sonatas, you have the opus 69, the A major, which stands in the middle of his life, and then you have these wonderful two works, opus 102, which are at the gates of the late style, the last phase. And these are in a way experimental works, but fully crystallized.” Superbly played by Schiff and Miklós Perényi, these may be the definitive recordings of Beethoven’s music for piano and cello.

CD ECM Records Zehetmair Quartett - Beethoven, Bruckner, Hartmann, Holliger

Thomas Zehetmair - vioara
Kuba Jakowicz - vioara
Ruth Killius - viola
Françoise Groben - violoncel
Ursula Smith - violoncel

This double album begins with Beethoven’s highly-concentrated opus 135, and concludes with Heinz Holliger’s explosions of fantasy in his 2nd String Quartet, a composition written for, and premiered by, the Zehetmair group. Bruckner’s rarely-heard C-minor quartet is, as Thomas Zehetmair notes, both touching and warm-hearted. These three pieces – the Beethoven, Bruckner and Holliger quartets – were recorded in Zurich 2010. The Hartmann Nr. 2 – “a large-scale nostalgic drama, full of wisdom” – was recorded in 2002 by an earlier quartet line-up, and this interpretation is previously unreleased.

Gidon Kremer’s return to J. S. Bach’s Sonatas and Partitas is a major event. Kremer’s first recording of these works was released almost a quarter of a century ago, and in the past few years the only solo piece of Bach’s which he has performed with any regularity has been the “Chaconne”.

Johann Sebastian Bach: Das Wohltemperierte Klavier I

Fellner shares some musical-temperamental affinities with former teacher Alfred Brendel, and has been praised by the press for his “insistence on putting musical sense and sensibility ahead of idle showmanship”: highly concentrated, very self-possessed, he gets at the heart of the material. “In his manner and his music-making he exudes calm and elegance.” - " [ The New York Times ]

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff - Franz Schubert

Andras Schiff - Fortepiano

Ungarische Melodie in h-Moll D 817
Franz Schubert - Sonate in G-Dur D 894 (op.78)
Franz Schubert - Moments musicaux D 780 (op.94)
Allegretto in c-Moll D 915
Franz Schubert - Vier Impromptus D 935 (op.142)
Franz Schubert - Sonate in B-Dur D 960

Try the exquisite Alegretto in C minor, D915, once memorably recorded by Schnabel, for a vivid sample of the world of sound that the Brodmann opens up (disc 2, tr I); or the first movement of the B flat major Sonata, D960, for a picture of how it matches the ambition of Schubert’s writing on the broadest scale (disc 2, tr 6). […] I cannot think of anyone of his caliber who has mastered the fortepiano as well as the modern piano and shown such distinction on both. In Schubert he has a claim to be considered sovereign among today’s players, carrying forward the reading and interpretation of him into areas that others have not fully explored.

Andras Schiff - Franz Brodmann Fortepiano

Franz Schubert - Vier Impromptus D 899 (op.90)
Franz Schubert - Sonate c-Moll D 958
Franz Schubert - Drei Klavierstücke D 946
Franz Schubert - Sonate A-Dur D 959

In the latest chapter in András Schiff’s ongoing documentation of Franz Schubert’s music, the great pianist plays the Four Impromptus D 899, and compositions from 1828, the last year of Schubert’s too brief life: The Three Pieces D 946 (“impromptus in all but name” notes Misha Donat in the CD booklet), the C minor Sonata D 958 and the A major Sonata D 959. Schiff again chooses to use his fortepiano made by Franz Brodmann in Vienna, around 1820. “It is to me ideally suited to Schubert’s keyboard works,” he has said. “There is something quintessentially Viennese in its timbre, its tender mellowness, its melancholic cantabilità.” Critics have agreed, unanimous also in their praise of Schiff’s interpretations: “I cannot think of anyone of his calibre who has mastered the fortepiano as well as the modern piano and shown such distinction on both,” wrote Stephen Plaistow in an Editor’s Choice review in Gramophone. “In Schubert Schiff has a claim to be considered sovereign among today’s players, carrying forward the reading and interpretation of him into areas that others have not fully explored.”

Preis der deutschen Schallplattenkritik, Bestenliste 4/2009

It is Schiff’s artistic individuality that makes these recordings unique and comparable to the greatest Beethoven cycles, offering a vision for the future through his research into the past. Schiff takes us with him on his journey that, however many times repeated, brings us to the music refreshed and renewed.
Malcolm Miller, International Piano, Autumn 2008

Schiff’s depth of musical understanding is priceless.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff / Peter Serkin - Mozart / Reger / Busoni: Music for Two Pianos

1999

Andras Schiff - pian
Peter Serkin - pian

ECM débuts for two of the greatest pianists of our time, artists of personal vision very seldom heard - as they are here - as piano duo. Recorded after an American tour in 1997, Schiff and Serkin deliver a programme that is in itself a kind of 'art of fugue', beginning and ending with Mozart and embracing fugal compositions by Reger and Busoni. Serkin's rigorous asceticism and Schiff's elegant poetic touch are brought to bear on these works, as the players investigate the essential qualities of the music. A fascinating issue.

CD ECM Records Andras Schiff - Robert Schumann: Geistervariationen

2011

Andras Schiff - Piano

András Schiff is not one to follow the crowd, so even in this much-recorded repertoire you know you can expect something different. These Schumann interpretations are head and shoulders above any other recent releases of the composer’s piano works. There is astonishing clarity of line and texture, intellectual focus in every interpretive decision, and a palpable sense of immediacy all too rare in studio recordings of piano music.

Ludwig van Beethoven:
Diabelli-Variationen Op. 120
Sonate Nr. 32 In C-Moll Op. 111
Sechs Bagatellen Op. 126

The predictably penetrating, intense playing of the mighty Diabellis on this disc is to be expected from Andras Schiff, but there's a twist: he does them twice, first on a 1921 Bechstein and then on a Hammerflügel fortepiano from Beethoven's era. The result is a primer on pianism, rounded out by Beethoven's final piano sonata and the Opus 126 Bagatelles. [ Zachary Woolfe, The New York Times ]

CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Claude Debussy: Preludes

2012

Alexei Lubimov - pian
Alexei Zuev - pian

Claude Debussy :
- Préludes (Premier Livre)
- Trois Nocturnes
- Prélude à l'après-midi d'un faune
- Préludes (Deuxième Livre)

Debussy is closer to the expressionism of Schoenberg than to the chiselled sonorities of a Chopin or the extravagant virtuosity of a Liszt, even if his refined art can still be seen in the line of tradition of 19th-century music. This is frequently forgotten in the interpretation as well as the assessment of his oeuvre. Debussy himself decried the concept of musical impressionism because he feared, rightly, that superficial refinement would degenerate into musical mist, concealing the subtleties of a new musical idiom and its structural logic. Thus, for example, instead of heading his 24 “Préludes” in two books with programmatic titles in his autograph score, he appended them at the bottom of the individual pieces.

CD ECM Records Hilliard Ensemble - Gesualdo: Tenebrae

1991

The Hilliard Ensemble :

David James - contratenor
Ashley Stafford - contratenor
John Potter - tenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Mark Padmore - tenor
Paul Hillier - barition
David Beavan - bas

Gesualdo was wealthy enough that he never had to depend on a patron; he could therefore write whatever he pleased, in whatever, far-out (to this day), experimental style he chose. His Tenebrae Responsoria are particularly thorny--they're a part of the religious service in which the church's candles are extinguished one at a time until the congregation is sitting in darkness--and Gesualdo's music is incredibly deep and troubling. And, I might add, magnificent. The Hilliards perform them ideally, with great technical accuracy, a sense of the weightiness of the text and music, and simply beautiful sound. This is an example of what makes the Hilliards so special. [ Robert Levine ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett - Bach: Goldberg Variations

1989

Keith Jarrett - clavecin

Johann Sebastian Bach : Goldberg Variations BWV 988

in one of his earlier recorded voyages into the classical world, Keith Jarrett is up against an imposing legacy as he tackles what has become the most famous set of variations in Western music. First, he chooses to play them on a double-manual harpsichord -- which makes the task somewhat easier, avoiding the finger-tangling cross hand difficulties that can trip up a piano performance. Second, he doesn't seem to treat the Goldbergs as a single cycle, inserting pauses between each variation to create 30 little pieces, bookended by the two renditions of the aria (which is perfectly acceptable). He's not in any hurry, not tempted to showboat or flaunt his considerable technique -- and in no way does this jazz pianist try to make the variations swing a la Jacques Loussier. [ AllMusic ]

2010

Valery Afanassiev - pian

Pianist Valery Afanassiev – renowned for his strikingly individual and deeply introspective interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert – has paired two often extrovert works by the composer: the set of six Moments Musicaux and the Sonata D. 850. Recorded in September 2010 at the Auditorio Radiotelevisione Svizzera, Lugano, this is ECM’s second Schubert recording by the Moscow-born pianist, having previously released a live recording of Afanassiev performing Schubert’s final Sonata D. 960 at the 1986 Lockenhaus Festival that has become a connoisseur’s favourite.
