CD Decca Puccini - Tosca ( Karajan - Price, Di Stefano ) CD + BluRay Audio

The first chords lift you right out of your seat. This is Tosca for the Imax screen, no holds barred. Karajan, and the resplendent Vienna Philharmonic, hurl those chords out of the loudspeakers, and from that moment his hold never falters. Has anyone ever lavished such care, sensuality and physical power on this score? And has any orchestra ever played it as wonderfully as the Vienna Philharmonic? Every detail of Puccini’s Technicolor orchestration is there to marvel at. And theatricality too. Listen to the way Karajan builds the Te Deum at the end of Act I, abetted by John Culshaw’s vivid production: you can smell the incense. Price is a refulgent Tosca, glorious of voice, Di Stefano a wonderfully open-voiced and surprisingly subtle Cavaradossi, and Taddei a compellingly evil Scarpia. For sheer white-hot drama, the mono Callas/De Sabata set remains a classic. But in its different way, and in still-spectacular sound, this is just as overwhelming. A ‘legend’ indeed. Adam Gatehouse

CD Decca Strauss - Salome ( Solti - Nilsson, Stolze ) CD + BluRay Audio

1962 - ( Birgit Nilsson, Gerhard Stolze, Grace Hoffman, Eberhard Wachter, Wiener Philharmoniker, dirijeaza Georg Solti ) -

There may have actually been “greater” Salomes in recordings of Salome; Hildegard Behrens is arguably more insightful, and Montserrat Caballé more kittenish and vocally opulent–but Nilsson is in a class by herself. Normal human beings–even great singers who seem supernatural–have flaws; Nilsson has none. You never worry whether she will find the center of a note or end the long-breathed phrase gallantly–she always does. Now that Decca has returned the original, grotesque photograph of her to the cover, you’ll know what to expect. -- Robert Levine, ClassicsToday.com

CD Decca Strauss - Elektra ( Solti - Nilsson, Resnik ) CD + BluRay Audio

1967 - ( Birgit Nilsson, Gerhard Stolze, Regina Resnik, Marie Collier, Tom Krause, Wiener Philharmoniker, dirijeaza Georg Solti ) -

Salome and Elektra, of course, were two of the greatest vehicles for Birgit Nilsson, and her Elektra remains unsurpassed–never mind the mind-boggling playing of the Vienna Philharmonic.

VINIL Decca Cecilia Bartoli, Sol Gabetta - Dolce Duello

The Cappella Gabetta, with cellist Sol Gabetta joined by a Baroque chamber ensemble led by her brother Andrés, has attracted top-notch vocal collaborators: first Vivica Genaux on an album of music by Handel and Hasse, and now no less than Cecilia Bartoli on this collection of Baroque arias featuring solo cello. It may sound like an arcane concept, and the breezy project graphics may have little or nothing to do with it, but the two performers do seem to have fun with the music and to deliver the "sweet duels" promised by the title. Sample the enticing "What passion cannot music raise and quell," from the Ode for St. Cecilia's Day, for a taste of the two "voices" that complement each other as well as in any vocal duet. The performers went to some lengths to find arias with this particular configuration, and it speaks well of their efforts that they've located some rather rare works that stick in the ear. The aria by Haydn's teacher Porpora does not set off vocal fireworks, but it must have been written to showcase the talents of a cellist, and it's as satisfying a duet today as it was on the day it came into existence. The final Cello Concerto No. 10 in D major of Boccherini does not quite fit with the rest stylistically; one of Vivaldi's cello concertos might have been a better bet. Yet this is in the main a fine offbeat choice featuring some star performers.
