CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Leucocyte

2008

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

It's too easy to fall into the trap of calling the last recording by a recently deceased artist "his best ever" or "a fitting end to his recorded legacy," but in the case of the final release by Swedish jazz superstars e.s.t. before their titular leader, pianist Esbjörn Svensson, died in a tragic diving accident in June, 2008, it's the only way to describe it. Leucocyte is an album that's like nothing the trio has released before, yet it possesses the unmistakable personality that caused the group to rise from obscurity in the mid-1990s to rock star-like fame (at least, in relative jazz terms) in recent years with albums including Tuesday Wonderland (ACT, 2006) and the particularly noteworthy Live in Hamburg (ACT, 2007).

Culled from two days of free improvisations recorded in an Australian studio in the middle of a tour, it's proof that, despite the production veneer that gave earlier albums like Viaticum (ACT, 2005) a pop-like sensibility, e.s.t. was, at its heart, an improvising band. Many of its compositions—sometimes complex writing that remained completely accessible, but other times profoundly lyrical music of spare simplicity—stemmed from ad hoc days spent experimenting in recording studios. But while the group would normally take the results and shape them into more defined form, Leucocyte is presented as it was recorded—with, of course, the additional post-production that always broadened the group's aural landscape into something that drew on elements as far-reaching as Keith Jarrett, Radiohead and Motorhead.

VINIL ACT Mozdzer, Rantala, Wollny: Jazz At Berlin Philharmonic VII

2016

Leszek Mozdzer - pian, Fender Rhodes
Iiro Rantala - pian
Michael Wollny - pian

“Three men, three pianos, one emotion – jazz”. These were the words with which German national TV news succinctly summed up the piano summit on 31st May 2016 in a sold-out main hall of the Berlin Philharmonie – a concert which can now be experienced exclusively on vinyl. And the TV news reporter continued: “Iiro Rantala, Leszek Możdżer, Michael Wollny. Each in a class of his own. Together, they’re a miracle”.

VINIL ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: From Gagarin's Point Of View

1999

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

The album is forcefully controlled, quite ethereal, and classical in both style and grace. The trajectory of the music is understated, with improvising being hardly essential, merely hinted at, as it seems that E.S.T. work as three entities ... those being the band, the individuals, and the music, where they sound as if they’re talking in chord sequences, in a rhythmic cycle that ebbs and flows, before bending back onto themselves, and stepping into a new space to begin the whole process again. What one needs to grasp is the notion of strategies, rather than improvisation, hence the change that allows for E.S.T. to create atmospheric textures that are as much jazz as they are ambient washes of emotion.

From Gagarin’s Point Of View is cool, laid back, and spontaneous in restrained manner that creates a dynamic tension that holds one’s attention, and inspires an inquisitive nature, anticipating where the music is headed as it’s happening, and joyfully holding on for the ride without feeling battered or waylaid.

VINIL ACT Vijay Iyer Trio: Accelerando

2012

Vijay Iyer - pian
Stephan Crump - bas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe

It's almost impossible not to consider Accelerando by pianist Vijay Iyer's working trio with bassist Stephen Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore a companion to 2009's excellent Historicity. Its obvious similarities are that it places a handful of originals alongside a host of cover versions. These come from well-known artists from the worlds of jazz, 21st century dance music, and R&B. But there are key differences, too: for starters, this trio has been together longer; nowhere does that matter more than it does in jazz. The intuitive interplay and collective mindset that this trio possesses are exponentially more mature than they were on Historicity, despite its sharpness and musical acumen. [ Thom Jurek ]

VINIL ACT Paolo Fresu / Richard Galliano / Jan Lundgren: Mare Nostrum II

2014

Paolo Fresu - trompeta, flugelhorn
Richard Galliano - acordeon, bandoneon
Jan Lundgren - pian

The Long Wait is Over. Mare Nostrum presents 'The Sound of Europe'….. Part Two.Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordionist Richard Galliano and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren form the trio “Mare Nostrum” (meaning our sea, and the Romans' name for the Mediterranean). This band forges connections between the discrete musical cultures of its three protagonists.

Countless listeners worldwide have been captivated by their music, by this distinctive 'sound of Europe.'When the first album “Mare Nostrum” appeared in 2007, critics in many countries were unanimous in their opinion that these three musicians had succeeded, they had found their way to forging something of timeless beauty. This “lyrical jazz ensemble with a keen sense of composure” (Downbeat, USA) had created “a wonderful album of genuine warmth”

VINIL ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Seven Days Of Falling

2003

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

Misguided American media comparisons to the highly overrated the Bad Plus have done pianist Esbjörn Svensson, bassist Dan Berglund, and drummer Magnus Ostrom a grave disservice, as their music is far more wide-ranging and much less gimmicky. Despite occasional forays into rock influences like "O.D.R.I.P." and a few brief passages that skirt the edges of outside free improv, there's an elegance and shapeliness to the trio's work that has more in common with the cerebral cool of Bill Evans (particularly on the quietly gorgeous opener "Ballad for the Unborn") or the effortless melodic grace of the Vince Guaraldi Trio ("Evening in Atlantis," "Believe, Beleft, Below"). VINIL ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Retrospective - Best of

2009

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

Despite the fact that 2008’ Leucocyte, would be the Esbjörn Svensson Trio's final album due to the tragic scuba diving accident that killed Svensson, this was a band that had traversed such wide musical territory they deserved a retrospective treatment simply to sum up what had transpired between the release of 1993’s When Everyone Has Gone and that premature finale. While this 70-minute single disc doesn’t contain any unreleased material, or pre-1999 material (in favor of presenting the trio’s fully developed aesthetic), it is beautifully compiled. [ AllMusic ]

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Live In Hamburg

2007

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, percutie
Dan Berglund - bas, percutie
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

Anybody who wants the quintessential Esbjörn Svensson gig (if they're fans, that is - EST's music is viewed as a slick hit-formula by some improv fundamentalists) can tick this CD as a must. EST's mix of jazz-ballad delicacy, rock melodrama, subtle electronic colouring, and hypnotic Jarrett and Mehldau-inspired extemporisation consistently produces powerful live shows. [ The Guardian ]

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Tuesday Wonderland

2006

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

Though there are traditional elements at work, Tuesday Wonderland thrives on being unconventional. On the opening track "Fading Maid Pendulum," just as it's hypnotizing with a gentle, classically tinged piano melody, Dan Berglund jumps in with a brooding, distorted heavy metal bass craziness and drummer Magnus Ostrom goes cymbal crazy. It's electro-ambient jazz gone mad. The title track features Svensson's David Benoit-like, melodic dark-meets-light piano dichotomy over Ostrom's sharp, off-meter drums before some spacy electronica takes over for a spell. "Brewery of Beggars" is another inspired dose of insanity, darting from busy cymbal-piano swirls to softer, contemplative piano-bass moments. [ AllMusic ]

CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: 301

2012

Esbjorn Svensson - pian, claviaturi, electronice
Dan Berglund - bas, electronice
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

A couple of months after pianist Esbjörn Svensson passed away in 2008 after a freak diving accident, what was thought to be the band's final album, Leucocyte, was released. It was considered final because the pianist had been involved in its mixing and sequencing as he had each of their previous 11 albums. The release of 301 comes as a surprise. The material included here was chosen from nine hours of tape recorded during the Leucocyte sessions -- which was, interestingly, originally conceived as a double album. The band fully expected another album would be culled from the remaining material. E.S.T. cut Leucocyte while on tour, having no compositions; what emerged came came out of individual ideas or group jams, making this set feel very much like an extension of the previous recording. CD ACT Esbjorn Svensson Trio: Live In London

2005

Esbjorn Svensson - pian
Dan Berglund - bas
Magnus Ostrom - tobe

this splendid release should bring a ray of happiness to old and new listeners alike. e.s.t. live in London captures the band on a magical evening when everything went right. Half the program came from the new-at-the-time Viaticum (ACT, 2005), with the remainder only a couple years older. The trio always loved taking everything beyond how it sounded on record; even the brand-new pieces weren't performed so much as explored, stretched and treated as springboards for some wondrous flights. VINIL ACT Adam Baldych & Helge Lien Trio: Bridges

2015

Adam Baldych - vioara
Helge Lien - pian
Frode Berg - bas
Per Oddvar Johansen - tobe

Bałdych builds bridges The virtuosity of Polish violinist Adam Bałdych enables him to pass with astonishing ease through all kinds of borders: the boundaries of his instrument, the barriers between genres, the seams between composing and improvising.

These dividing lines fall away as his playing coalesces with that of his fellow musicians. These attributes have led the UK magazine Jazzwise to call him “a refreshingly different European jazz star”. As a player who is “a virtuoso and capable of delivering high emotion” (Fono Forum) with his "dervish-like intensity" (Jazz thing), he uses the tradition as the point of departure for new and exploratory journeys up and away beyond jazz.

CD ACT Youn Sun Nah: Lento

2013
Youn Sun Nah - voce, kalimba, music box, kazoo
Ulf Wakenius - chitari
Lars Danielsson - contrabas, violoncel
Xavier Desandre-Navarre - percutie
Vincent Peirani - acordeoane

Generally, the arrangements are stripped down to the bare essentials; Nah is accompanied only by Wakenius's acoustic guitar on the title track, an ode to the caressing balm of nature, and on "Hurt," Nine Inch Nail singer Trent Reznor's melodically beautiful yet anguished account of drug abuse. On both numbers Nah's delivery is intimate and soulful. There's a similar soul-laid-bare intimacy in the vocal and bass intro to "Lament"; "My life is short and my days are running, as fast as you loved me, as fast as you left me," Nah sings, and there's striking contrast between the singer's slow, poetic delivery and accordionist Vincent Peirani's cheery lines.
