Stephan Micus - steel drum, voce, dilruba, suling, kortholt, nay, sinding

editie Touchstones - format mini-vinil replica, coperti gatefold, cartonate

Stephan Micus shapes his music by taking the instruments of the world out of their cultural, historical or traditional contexts and blending them in new ways. The colours of To The Evening Child are established through instrumental combinations involving dilruba (a string instrument associated with Hindustani classical music), suling (reed flute of the Balinese gamelan orchestra), nay (end-blown flute of the Middle East), sinding (West African harp), kortholt (German renaissance reed instrument) and steel drum (associated with West Indian calypso). “This music sounds in those hushed spaces where the universe inhales, the sound that keeps all celestial bodies spinning” – Tyran Grillo, Between Sound and Space

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon

Dino Saluzzi as a solo performer is one of the more remarkable musicians in contemporary music, in that he plays several instruments, including his beloved bandoneon with such precision, balance and subtle power. Kultrum is indeed a multi-cultural project that taps into the folkloric, ancestral, and traditional sounds of Native American Indians and his South American roots, enhanced by producer Manfred Eicher's Eurocentric notions.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Danca Des Cabecas

1977
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian, voce, flaute
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, berimbau, voce

Egberto Gismonti’s Dança das Cabeças (recorded 1976) was the first ECM disc from the brilliant Brazilian guitarist and pianist and the first document of Egberto’s collaboration with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. It was a revelatory blending of sounds, Gismonti’s finely sculpted compositions irradiated by Nana’s Afro-Brazilian rhythm concept and his rainforest sounds. Dança das Cabeças won the German Record Critics Prize as Album of the Year in 1977.

Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian

This live album is amazing in its scope, power and beauty. On guitar or piano, Gismonti often sounds as if he's playing two instruments at once, combining fierce rhythms with shapely melodies while Haden's warm, rich bass broadens the music with grainy texture and depth...Gismonti and Haden always add twists to the rhythms and angles to the melodies, making the music prismatic. "The opening arpeggios of “Carmem” earn our trust at once with a timeworn and familiar comfort. The pebbles of Gismonti’s plunking notes sink into nostalgic waters, pulled by arco threads into the hands of light that loosed them.

“Bianca” picks at those same threads, frayed like the edge of a carpet in a childhood home through which pass only the ghosts of revolt. Such backward glances are ever-present in Gismonti’s world, whether they are charting the skyward paths of “Lundú #2” or dancing with joy in “Alegrinho #2.” His fingers flutter across piano keys as adeptly as they walk a fingerboard, escorting the group’s cultured sound through a gallery of moods.

Children’s feet map the gray streets of “Forró,” cracked yet held in shape like the shells of hardboiled eggs, and continue to run through “Natura, festa do interior,” a 33.5-minute masterpiece of eroded landscapes. With a sweep as cinematic as it is prosaic, it inscribes a scroll’s worth of love for all things just and familial.

Egberto Gismonti -chitara, percutie, kalimba, fluier din lemn, voce
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, berimbau, tama
Ralph Towner - chitara
Collin Walcott - tabla
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran

Inspired by his time spent with the Xingu Indians of the Amazon, to whom the album is also dedicated, Sol Do Meio Dia (Midday Sun) is a consistently intriguing transitional album from multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti. With him are percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott and guitarist Ralph Towner, as well as Jan Garbarek on soprano saxophone for a brief spell.

At this point in his career, Gismonti was beginning to fill in the porous sound of his 8-string guitar. To this end, Vasconcelos and Walcott flesh out much of the dizzying rhythmic space that defines his sound, while Towner’s 12-string laces the background with more explicit chording. Walcott traces magical circles in “Raga,” for which Gismonti engages us with nimble fingerwork on the guitar’s highest harmonics. Thus begins a chain of sporadic bursts acting in dialogue.

CD ECM Records Steve Tibbetts: Life Of

Steve Tibbetts - chitara, pian
Marc Anderson - percutie
Michelle Kinney - violoncel, drone

One-of-a-kind guitarist and record-maker Steve Tibbetts has an association with ECM dating back to 1981, with his body of work reflecting that of an artist who follows his own winding, questing path. The BBC has described his music as “an atmospheric brew… brilliant, individual.”

Life Of…, his ninth album for the label, serves as something of a sequel to his 2010 ECM release, Natural Causes, which Jazz Times called “music to get lost in.” Like the earlier album, Life Of… showcases the richness of his Martin 12-string acoustic guitar, along with his gamelan-like piano and artfully deployed field samples of Balinese gongs; the sonic picture also incorporates the sensitive percussion of long-time musical partner Marc Anderson and the almost subliminal cello drones of Michelle Kinney.

Stephan Micus - Balanzikom, Nyckelharpa, Zither, Shakuhachi, Voce, Steel String Guitar, Genbri

“When I play,” says Micus, “I am listening to the instrument and telling the stories it has inside it. It’s like a human being and each of us has unique stories to tell. Similarly, if I try a tune I composed for one shakuhachi on another one it somehow doesn’t sound right. The melody was really made for, and with, that particular instrument. A composer is like a guide taking you on a walk. He will take you from where you are, lead you into unknown territory and bring you back.”
The Inland Sea is Stephan Micus’ nyckelharpa journey.

This extraordinary multi-instrumentalist is actually one of the few to have grasped in its essence what was the song of the world. With him there exist no territories or cultural atavisms, but a planetary polyphony projected on a horizon of eternity. His instruments exchange once more the out-lines of their countries of origin to become instruments without nationality in the hands of this nomad musician. Exceptional.

“Towards The Wind”, the 15th ECM recording by the perennially popular world-traveller and multi-instrumentalist, features his debut performances on the Armenian duduk, that exceptionally expressive forerunner of the oboe and the clarinet. Stephan Micus was inspired by recordings of the great duduk virtuoso Jivan Gasparian and was able to study with Armenia’s greatest folk musician in Yerevan in the autumn of 1999. Gasparian passed along to him some of the instrument’s secrets, the ways in which its wealth of textures and sounds can be annexed.

Stephan Micus - Sitars, Acoustic Guitar, Vocal, Bavarian Zithers, Shakuhachi, Sho, Thai Flute, Rabab

Although Micus has most often crafted albums at his home studio and sent them to Eicher for mixing and mastering, earlier ones such as this were recorded at Tonstudio Bauer in Ludwigsburg, Germany, where many of ECM’s formative releases were also realized. The studio dynamics imbue these travels with a rather different intimacy, one which brings its own climate and bounces back sunlight like the moon. Three Bavarian zithers, each with its own signature, form a dense and percussive bed for Micus’s singing in “Borkenkind.” His floating transpositions trail sutras of memory, spinning from them a yarn of forgetting. This becomes the sole purpose of the music: to detach oneself from the snares of fame and recognition until only the sound and the ear are left to dance unhindered. And indeed, when Micus sings again in “For M’schr And Djingis Khan,” accompanied by the uncut diamond of the rabab (Afghani lute), he balances on a tipping point into infinity, his mouth filled with empty pages. In stoc

2008

Stephan Micus - Doussn' Gouni, Duduk, Maung, Gongs, Tibetan Cymbals, Bavarian Zither, Sinding, Steel-String Guitar, Hammered Dulcimer, Charango, Nay, Bass Duduk, Voice

'Snow' is the title Stephan Micus has given to his 18th album for ECM. It is the outcome of continuous work he has carried out on journeys and in the studio since the release of his 'On the Wing' in early spring 2006. 'To me, snow is one of the most beautiful of all natural phenomena', explains Micus, who has been living in Spain for many years. 'It’s closely associated with lasting impressions of my original home in Bavaria, especially the long moonlit walks I used to take when I lived in the Alpine foothills. I've always regarded snow as the essence of magic, even more so today now that there's so little of it and the glaciers are disappearing.' Micus's music has always drawn on impressions of nature and the countryside. The inspiration for his new album came largely from a long study tour through Armenia, Nagorno-Karabakh and the mountains of the Caucasus. He travelled through these distant and extremely isolated regions partly by Jeep, partly on extended trips by foot. He met people from many walks of life and became acquainted with their living conditions and musical traditions.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Zig Zag

1996
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian
Nando Carneiro - chitara, sintetizator
Zeca Assumpcao - contrabas

'ZigZag' is the 14th Gismonti recording to be issued by ECM and features his touring band of Nando Carneiro, who doubles on guitar and synthesizer, and bassist Zeca Assumpacao.

The trio members have been friends since the 1970's and collaborated on many projects and tours both in South America and Europe. More than 20 years after his ECM debut, 'Dança das Cabeças', Gismonti remains a category unto himself. Born in the small Brazilian town of Carmo to a Lebanese father and a Sicilian mother, he grew up in an 'international' environment .

Beginning classical piano at the age of 5, his earliest yearnings were to play and compose music in the European tradition. At the age of 20 he went to Paris to study initially with composer Jean Barraqué and later with Nadia Boulanger. Whereas Barraqué passed on his enthusiasm for Debussy, Ravel and Stravinsky to the young Egberto, Boulanger sent the aspiring composer home to reacquaint himself with his Brazilian roots.

CD ECM Records Ghazal: The Rain

In stoc

Mai 2001
Kayhan Kalhor - kamancheh
Shujaat Husain Khan - sitar, voce
Sandeep Das - tabla

Recorded live in Berne, Switzerland, The Rain is divided into three long-form improvisations on traditional motifs, averaging 18 minutes each. “Fire” opens with a blush of sitar, a splash of sun on the well-worn path of the kamancheh’s tearful song. The expectation in Khan’s singing, indistinguishably potent through throat and string, marks that path with a mapmaker’s intuition. Khan’s voice is almost startling, providing that moment of satori on which everything hinges. Vocal cues are left intact, loosing the birds of Kalhor’s flights from their cages: signals born of moments yet predestined beyond all sense of time. In contrast, the tabla arises from the very earth, its skins mineral-rough against a backdrop of unforced biorhythms.

1990

Anouar Brahem - oud
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Lassad Hosni - percutie

Recorded in 1990, Barzakh was the ECM debut of Tunisian oud master Anouar Brahem, and an album that immediately captured the attention of press and public with its gracefulness and authority. “Phenomenal…this is pure Arab music, without ‘world music’ frippery,” wrote Karl Lippegaus in Stereo. Brahem is joined here by Bechir Selmi, the sensitive violinist from the Musical Ensemble of Tunis, and percussionist Lassad Hosni, whose earthy frame drum and speeding darbouka would come to be important components of later Brahem recordings including Conte de l’incroyable amour and Astrakan Café. Beyond the improvisatory brilliance, Barzakh gave notice also of Brahem’s gift for writing arresting themes and luminous melody, as illustrated by “Raf Raf”, “Parfum de Gitane”, “Kerkenah” and other pieces here.

Initially published in April 1991, vinyl is reissued in October 2017 as audiophile 180g pressing.
