CD ECM Records Craig Taborn Trio: Chants

2012

Craig Taborn - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Gerald Cleaver - tobe

The songs on Craig Taborn Trio’s latest CD, ‘Chants’, have titles, but they don’t have borders, or ordinary structures, or typical narrative flow. The songs are positively shimmering, immaculately detailed, prismatic and very improvisational. But they don’t live quickly or land easily; they flutter and spiral, bend and float, and constantly surprise. [...] You hear strains of Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley’s rambles and Paul Motian’s trios, even the urgency and repetition of some electronic music, but ‘Chant’ is original to its core. And lovely as in the lulaby like stillness of ‘In Chant’ Taborn’s stately, sad acoustic piano lines wrapping around double bassist Thomas Morgan’s lyrical lines and Gerald Cleaver’s sizzling brush strokes.

CD ECM Records Craig Taborn: Avenging Angel

2011

Craig Taborn - pian

Listen to Avenging Angel a few times and, remarkably, the music becomes your special friend. Each piece imparts a different mood: I heard echoes of an old-fashioned children’s music box, quirky Eric Satie-like minimalism, film noir foreboding, serene solitary meditation, liquid Debussyesque ripples, dogged gambols, stately resolve, meaningful wanderin – in other words the gamut.
Juan Rodriguez, Montreal Gazette

Texture and dynamics are the key to the success of the album […] He weaves small improvisations into thoughtful statements, not in a grandiose or bombastic way, but in a manner that allows the music and ideas to flow through him in an unimpeded manner. But he also knows hot to up the ante as well, building the music into swirling two-handed lines that show the manual dexterity he is capable of.

CD ECM Records Craig Taborn: Daylight Ghosts

2017

Craig Taborn - pian
Chris Speed - saxofon tenor, clarinet
Chris Lightcap - bas electric, contrabas
Dave King - tobe, percutie electronica

Taborn has a strong interest in group chemistry and ‘Daylight Ghosts’ is an ensemble offering in the true sense of the term. In most songs it is the overlap and entwining of parts, the polymelodies as polyrhythms, that hold the attention, with head-solo-head strategies largely eschewed. Furthermore Taborn excels at conjuring ambiences where chords don’t so much shift as melt in and out of focus […] Taborn’s ability to blur the line between organic and synthetic timbres so that contemporary technology dos not at all feel like a bolted-on element in the arrangements is no less impressive. Sprightly non-western rhythms, fluid time and bluesy backbeats simply enhance this beguiling hypnosis.
Kevin Le Gendre, Jazzwise

Craig Taborn's third ECM album, 2017's ‘Daylight Ghosts’, is a sophisticated quartet date that finds the pianist deftly balancing his exploratory, classical-influenced jazz with subtle electronics, avant-garde flourishes, and a robust group aesthetic […] At turns unsettling and haunting, yet rife with a brightly dynamic lyricism, ‘Daylight Ghosts’ is an endlessly compelling, deeply imagistic album packed with Taborn's inspired musical juxtapositions.

CD ECM Records Ches Smith, Craig Taborn, Mat Maneri: The Bell

2016

Ches Smith - tobe, vibrafon, timpane
Craig Taborn - pian
Mat Maneri - viola

Fans of the avant garde in jazz, classical, and improvised music will find plenty to enjoy on ‘The Bell’, and those less sure of their affinity for the sonically unexpected are likely to find themselves intrigued by the elegance and delicacy of this music.
Andrea Canter, Jazzpolice

This trio began as a casual one-time project, the music entirely improvised. The combination clicked so well that Smith began writing music for them to play—but leaving plenty of space for improvisation to happen. The result is an intriguing combination of composition and improvisation.

ecmreviews:
"ECM left an indelible mark in 1998 with the release of Khmer. Trumpeter Nils Petter Molvær’s leader debut spread a royal flush across the table when the music industry least suspected it. Solid Ether marks a return to that trending sonic universe, only now it turns away from the idiomatic sources of its predecessor and looks deeper into the mirror for inspiration. This time around, the layers are more archaeologically striated, servile to a beat-driven cartography. Melodically, the album is rawer, rudimentary, and finds its voice through the detailed care of the arrangements.

CD ECM Records Bill Frisell / Thomas Moran: Small Town

2017 -
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica
Thomas Moran - contrabas

But, most importantly, Small Town represents the guitarist's first recorded encounter with Thomas Morgan in the intimate setting of a duo, the double bassist having first shown up on Frisell's film soundtrack homage, When You Wish Upon a Star (Okeh, 2016). As superb as When You Wish Upon a Star undeniably is, it's in the more naked, completely vulnerable environs of the duo—where the need for musical trust is, perhaps, at its most crucial—that the profound chemistry shared by these two thoroughly synchronized players becomes even clearer.

Steve Tibbetts - chitara electrica, double-six, kalimba, tape loops
Marc Anderson - percutie, conga, bongo

editie Touchstones - format mini-vinil replica, coperti gatefold, cartonate

Steve Tibbetts’ first ECM session found the Minnesotan guitar player journeying with faithful percussionist Marc Anderson to Oslo in 1981, to make what might be his most stark and inner-directed recording, etching sounds in silence. “There is nothing in this music (with titles such as “The Big Wind,” and “Walking”) to hang any defining label on”, commented the Oakland Tribune. “It has overtones of classical, jazz, rock and Martian style but mostly it is just an extreme pleasure for the senses. Approach with an open mind.”

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti / Charlie Haden / Jan Garbarek: Folk Songs

1981

Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara , pian

This scintillating follow-up album to Magico is yet another fine example of ECM’s progressive comings together. Uniting multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti with the instantly recognizable stylings of saxophonist Jan Garbarek and bassist Charlie Haden seems at once a stroke of genius and an inevitable configuration.

A blue “Folk Song” sets the tone for all tender considerations that follow, slowly working its motions into a helix of atmospheres. Gismonti stretches out a gorgeous drawl in “Bôdas De Prata.” Within the open bowl of Garbarek’s cupped tenor, he glows like a firefly. The rhythmic acuity of “Cego Aderaldo” is enough to sustain an otherwise languid album.

Camerata Romeu, dirijor Zenaida Romeu
The brilliant, kaleidoscopic Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti has made his first album for ECM in 12 years, Saudações. It’s a double-exposure of where he is now. The first disc presents an orchestral piece… The second is totally different: an hour-plus of stunning guitar duets on original music with his son, Alexandre Gismonti. … This is Mr. Gismonti’s original style, rigorous, percussive, deep, harmony-rich, half of it tied to Brazilian popular music and the dance impulse, all of it singable. 2019

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Francesco Bearzatti - saxofon tenor
Roberto Cecchetto - chitara
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joao Lobo - tobe

Italian pianist Giovanni Guidi’s core trio with bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer João Lobo opens Avec le temps with a deeply-felt interpretation of the title track, the song of love and loss by Léo Ferré, and closes the album with “Tomasz”, dedicated to Tomasz Stanko. In between, the band swells to quintet size, with saxophonist Francesco Bearzatti and guitarist Roberto Cecchetto contributing to Guidi originals and group improvising in a programme of strikingly contrasting energies and colours, with outstanding playing by all participants. Avec le temps was recorded at Studios La Buisonne in November 2017 and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records Giovanni Guidi: This Is The Day

2015

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joao Lobo - tobe

The Giovanni Guidi Trio plays jazz of uncommon originality and reflective depth. On their second ECM album, Italian pianist Guidi, US bassist Morgan, and Portuguese drummer Lobo continue the work begun on the 2011 recording City of Broken Dreams, with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension. Each of the players has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi’s pen, but also includes the standard “I’m Through with Love”, Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés’ “Quizás, quizás, quizás” (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole’s version), and “Baiiia” by João Lobo.

CD ECM Records Giovanni Guidi: City Of Broken Dreams

2013

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joao Lobo - tobe

Pianist Giovanni Guidi (born 1985), is one of the most outstanding musicians to have emerged from the ranks of Italian jazz in the last decade and has already made his presence felt on Enrico Rava’s “Tribe” and “On The Dancefloor” albums. Rava praises both Guidi’s “limitless curiosity” as an improviser and his “relentless refinement” of touch and musical taste, and the pianist continually proves that those qualities are not opposites. His first leader date for ECM is a glowing collection of self-penned tunes, simultaneously inner-directed and creatively daring, with many adroit exchanges between the musicians and plenty of space given also to bassist Thomas Morgan, whose role in the Guidi Trio is perhaps analogous to Scott LaFaro’s in the Evans Trio. Portuguese drummer João Lobo is another highly original musician, poetically shading the music with a delicate tracery of cymbals.

CD ECM Records Giovanni Guidi: Ida Lupino

2016

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Gianluca Petrella - trombon
Louis Sclavis - clarinet, bas clarinet
Gerard Cleaver - tobe

Pianist Giovanni Guidi and trombonist Gianluca Petrella, key figures in what some are hailing as a “golden age” of Italian jazz, found their strong improvisational rapport inside Enrico Rava’s band (see for instance the 2010 ECM album Tribe) and, keen to play more, formed a duo, giving many concerts in which they are intermittently joined by guests. For this studio recording, producer Manfred Eicher brought the duo together with US drummer Gerald Cleaver and French clarinetist Louis Sclavis, for an outgoing set of music which includes lyrical free improvising and tunes composed by Giovanni and Gianluca. The piece called “Gato!” tips the hat to Mr Barbieri, and title track “Ida Lupino” serves double duty as a salute to composer Carla Bley in her 80th year (Petrella once played in a big band under Carla’s direction) and as a tribute to Paul Bley, who popularized the tune and influenced so many improvisers (not least Giovanni Guidi).

CD ECM Records Florian Weber: Lucent Waters

2017

Florian Weber - pian
Ralph Alessi - trompeta
Linda May Han Oh - contrabas
Nasheet Waits - tobe

In his second ECM appearance (following a critically-acclaimed duo recording with Markus Stockhausen) pianist Florian Weber leads a strong cast through a programme of his compositions and sketches. Whether paying tribute to mentor Lee Konitz on “Honestlee”, impressionistically conveying the glittering “Melody of a Waterfall” or generating impactful drama out of fragments of sound on “Butterfly Effect”, Weber continually draws fresh responses from his players. “I wanted this project to be as open as possible”, he says. “It’s the idea of exploration that is important here, and the differences between the players.” The strong, grounded bass of Linda May Han Oh contrasts strikingly with Nasheet Waits’s fleet, fluid drumming, setting up new contexts for Ralph Alessi’s elegantly inventive trumpet and the leader’s highly creative piano playing. Lucent Waters was recorded at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in September 2017, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records Anja Lechner, Pablo Marquez - Franz Schubert: Die Nacht

2018

Anja Lechner - violoncel
Pablo Marquez - chitara

Friedrich Burgmüller, Franz Schubert

German cellist Anja Lechner and Argentinean guitarist Pablo Márquez met in 2003 and have since explored the most diverse repertoire and modes of expression in their concerts. For their first duo album, a conceptual context is provided by the strong tradition of songs with guitar accompaniment prevalent in 19th century Vienna, as Lechner and Márquez play some of Schubert’s most beloved songs (including Die Nacht, Nacht und Träume and Der Leiermann), elegantly framing the album’s centrepiece: Schubert’s expansive ‘Arpeggione’ sonata. Many of Schubert’s songs were published in alternative versions with guitar during the composer’s lifetime; in some cases, the guitar version appeared even before the one for piano.

J.S. Bach : Six Suites For Viola Solo ( BWV 1007-1012 )

The poetry and radiance of Bach’s cello suites (BWV 1007-1012) are transfigured in these remarkable interpretations by Kim Kashkashian on viola, offering “a different kind of sombreness, a different kind of dazzlement” as annotator Paul Griffiths observes. One of the most compelling performers of classical and new music, Kashkashian has been hailed by The San Francisco Chronicle as "an artist who combines a probing, restless musical intellect with enormous beauty of tone." An ECM artist since 1985, she approaches Bach’s music with the same commitment as revealed in her other solo recordings, the legendary Hindemith sonatas album and the widely acclaimed (and Grammy-winning) account of Kurtág and Ligeti.

András Schiff Piano

Bach - Das Wohltemperierte Clavier - Buch I, BWV 846-869
Bach - Das Wohltemperierte Clavier - Buch II, BWV 870-893

As a young pianist, András Schiff earned wide esteem for his 1980s recordings of the major keyboard works of J.S. Bach; in recent years, as part of his long-term relationship with ECM, he has gone back to Bach as a sage veteran, earning more acclaim for his New Series recordings of the Goldberg Variations (2001) and the six Partitas (2007). The New York Times said, “Mr. Schiff is, in Bach, a phenomenon. He doesn’t so much perform it as emit, breathe it.” In August 2011, Schiff turned his focus to the 48 preludes and fugues of The Well-Tempered Clavier, making studio recordings of both books in the Auditorium Radiosvizzera Italiana, Lugano.
