CD ECM Records Iro Haarla: Vespers

2011

Iro Haarla - pian, harpa
Mathias Eick - trompeta
Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Uffe Krokfors - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

Six years after the much-loved “Northbound” – described by All About Jazz as “lovely, articulate, river-deep music” -, a new album of emotionally-powerful ballads from outstanding composer-pianist-harpist Iro Haarla and her remarkable Finnish-Norwegian ensemble. The line-up is unchanged, likewise the commitment of the players, top-flight improvisers, every one. “Vespers” continues a tradition of music - and a scope feeling - that Iro helped establish in the Far North in her years as composer/arranger/orchestrator for Edward Vesala’s bands (and magical ECM recordings including “Lumi”, “Ode To The Death Of Jazz”, “Invisible Storm” and “Nordic Gallery”). Iro has, furthermore, composed music for the UMO Jazz Orchestra (in 2002 for Tomasz Stanko as soloist, and in 2006 for a “UMO plays Haarla” event in Helsinki and for a suite of pieces premiered in Tampere). In 2008, at the instigation of Manfred Eicher, she premiered new music for string quartet and piano and harp in Helsinki.

CD ECM Records Dominique Pifarely, Francois Couturier: Poros

1998

Francois Couturier - pian
Dominique Pifarely - vioara

As on the album’s cover, the duo crosshatches incidentals in a knitted bruise. Pifarély trembles with the motion of a leaf obsessed with the fear of falling. His attention to detail and the precision of his agitations are thus remarkable. Couturier’s intricate astrology calls strangely from below, goading that leaf into decomposition. Only then do we see that the forest has been there all along, tilting, spinning, blurring into a looming mask of greens and browns. Traction is hard to come by, paths invisible. Our mind becomes the score, the stand on which its pages are turned, the sound dying to be released from within it. In thinking we believe, and in believing we know. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Abdullah Ibrahim: African Piano

Octombrie 1969

Abdullah Ibrahim ( aka. Dollar Brand ) - pian

AllMusic (Scott Yanow) :

"Pianist Abdullah Ibrahim was still known as "Dollar Brand" when he recorded this solo piano set for ECM; it has been reissued on CD under his original name. The continuous live performance (which is under 39 minutes) explores eight of Ibrahim's originals...Ibrahim was still in the process of finding his own sound at the time, although his improvisations (which use repetition and vamps effectively) have their interesting moments. Still, Ibrahim's later work is more significant."

CD ECM Records Tigran Hamasyan: Atmospheres

2016

Tigran Hamasyan - pian
Arve Henriksen - trompeta
Eivind Aarset - chitara electrica
Jan Bang - live sampling

Within ‘Atmosphères’ there is a sense of moving from the antiquity of Komitas to creative improvisation, neither completely independent of the other. Because the album successfully exists in two worlds, it has broad appeal and in equal measure for those with an affinity for either. Aarset and Bang's contributions may not always be distinct on first listen but the guitarist provides a denser layer to the music while Bang adds a minimalist variation of orchestration. As you may have guessed ..., this isn’t exactly dinner jazz, but neither is it a dry, difficult academic exercise. The writing is vibrant, witty and often beautiful. Throughout the cast of players shifts, giving each piece a distinctive character. ... But these guys can make it up as they go along just as well as they can write it down; the two free improvisations are stuffed with ideas yet marked by a restraint and a sense of space rarely found in jazz (except maybe on other ECM records). The closing „Tutti Free“ finds the whole 11 piece slowly expanding and contracting as one with a sensitivity and power that’s almost unfathomable. Beautiful.

CD ECM Records Trygve Seim: Sangam

2004

Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Oyvind Braekke - trombon
Helge Sunde - trombon
Nils Jansen - saxofon bas, contrabas clarinet
Lars Andreas Haug - tuba
Tone Reichelt - french horn
Per Oddvar Johansen - tobe
Frode Haltli - acordeon
Arve Henriksen - trompeta
Morten Hannisdal - violoncel

“Sangam”, means “coming together”, in Sanskrit, sometimes taken to signify “the meeting point of three rivers”. Interpret that literally in Trygve Seim’s case and the different rivers might symbolize the cross-referencing of jazz, contemporary composition and diverse world folk traditions in his work. On the second ECM album issued under his name, the Norwegian saxophonist draws inspiration from musical and non-musical sources both local and far-flung, bringing these influences to bear on compositions and arrangements that are uniquely personal. Seim has been heard recently with The Source, the improvising group he co-leads with Øyvind Brække and Per Oddvar Johansen (both featured here), and has guested on Christian Wallumrød’s “Sofienberg Variations”, but “Sangam” is closer in spirit to “Different Rivers”, the ECM debut that overwhelmed international critics in 2001.

CD ECM Records Trygve Seim: The Source

2006

Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Oyvind Braekke - trombon
Mats Eilertsen - contrabas
Per Oddvar Johansen - tobe

This is more explicitly jazzy, with sax/trombone/bass/drums group the Source exploring a lazily animated, free-swing music influenced not only by Garbarek’s ghostly meditations but also by the more urgently quirky lines of Ornette Coleman. Trombonist Oyvind Braekke, a Coleman fan, has a bigger influence on this set than on previous ones, and drummer Per Oddvar Johansen and bassist Mats Eilertsen stir in fluid, restless undercurrents. For Seim stalwarts, however, there a re plenty of long trombone notes, spacey bass figures, whispering sax, cymbal washes and even some perkily assertive swing. This may be the most creative band at the sharp end of the north European scene.

CD ECM Records Trygve Seim, Frode Haltli: Yeraz

2008

Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Frode Haltli - acordeon

Norwegian musicians Seim and Haltli have collaborated often over the years, and Frode is also a member of Trygve’s “Sangam” ensemble. But the flexible duo format has provided a particularly useful forum for the exploration of the most divergent music – from the Armenian folk song that gives the album its title to free play, from Gurdjieff to Bob Marley’s “Redemption Song”, and new and old tunes by Trgyve - as well as the exploration of sound, the plangent cry of the sax against the accordion’s breathing reeds. The Seim/Haltli duo has been a popular touring unit in recent seasons: this is the first, eagerly-anticipated, recorded documentation of its music.

CD ECM Records Trygve Seim, Frode Haltli: Rumi Songs

2016

Trygve Seim - saxofoane
Frode Haltli - acordeon
Tora Augestad - voce
Svante Henryson -acordeon

Norwegian saxophonist Trygve Seim sets the poetry of Jalaluddin Rumi (1207-1273), using the inspired contemporary English-language versions of Coleman Barks and Kabir Helminski as his source texts. Trygve responds both to the musicality of the translations and to Rumi’s gifts as a storyteller and with Rumi Songs seems to have invented a new kind of Lieder with a Nordic-Oriental orientation. The line-up is strikingly unorthodox, with each of the quartet members bringing their own musical personalities to the material. Classical mezzo-soprano Tora Augestad is well-known as the leader of her own ensemble Music For A While, and for her numerous music-theatre collaborations with Christoph Mathaler. She finds an intimate tone to convey Rumi’s thoughts, underlined by the elegant arrangements and the improvisational input of Seim, Haltli and Henryson.

Larry Grenadier - contrabas

Larry Grenadier’s The Gleaners is a profound and highly creative album, harvesting influences from many sources, its title inspired by Agnès Varda’s film The Gleaners and I. CD ECM Records Frode Haltli - Bent Sorensen, Hans Abrahamsen: Air

2016

Frode Haltli - acordeon

Arditti Quartet :
Irvine Arditti - vioara
Ashot Sarkissjan - vioara
Ralf Ehlers - viola
Lucas Fels - violoncel
Trondheim Soloists

Bent Sorensen: It Is Pain Flowing Slowly On A White Wall
Hans Abrahamsen: Air
Hans Abrahamsen: Three Little Nocturnas
Bent Sorensen: Sigrids Wiegenlied

The innovative Norwegian accordionist Frode Haltli is heard here with chamber orchestra, with string quartet and solo, performing music written for him by Danish composers Bent Sørensen and Hans Abrahamsen. Sørensen, he notes, has been an influence on his development as a player, challenging perceptions of what can be achieved on the accordion through tone control and nuances in soft dynamics, a subject explored in detail on It is Pain Flowing Down Softly on a White Wall, where Haltli is heard with the Trondheim Soloists. Hans Abrahamsen’s Three Little Nocturnes find the accordionist in the company of the redoubtable Arditti Quartet. For the title composition Air, Hans Abrahamsen returned, at Frode Haltli’s suggestion, to the early solo work Canzona, reworking until it became a new piece “characterized by a great sense of peace and a cohesive form”.

CD ECM Records Frode Haltli: Passing Images

2007

Frode Haltli - acordeon
Arve Henriksen - trompeta
Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje - voce
Garth Knox - viola

Frode Haltli, acknowledged as one of the most outstanding accordion soloists in contemporary music, is also an exceptional improviser and an authority on folk music. His second ECM recording under his own name brings all of these aspects of his musical character together. Repertoire includes a psalm from the western fjords, a lyrical waltz from Haltli‘s home village near the Swedish border, a Roma traveller tune that suggests Albert Ayler‘s sound-world... With a supporting cast including Irish-Scottish classical viola player Garth Knox (ex-Arditti Quartet) as well as Norwegian partners composer/singer Maja Ratkje and trumpeter Arve Henriksen, Haltli offers a radical new look at music from traditional sources.

CD ECM Records Tim Berne: Snakeoil

2011

Tim Berne - saxofon alto
Oscar Noriega - clarinet, bas clarinet
Matt Mitchell - pian
Ches Smith - tobe

Tim Berne, noted explorer of the tensions between composition and improvisation, knew exactly what he was doing in assembling his latest band. Here, the iconoclastic New York saxophonist has constructed a vehicle that allows his purposeful musical personality to shine through both in terms of the group arrangements and his own expressive voice. Overall, (as befits Berne's first release on ECM as a leader), the tunes have a cerebral feel. [...] Berne's sax rises upwards into an earthy extra dimension, as breezy and urban as a yellow taxi cab. There's a chamber music delicacy to it all, sure, but it's one that's suffused with genuine humanity and more than a little wisdom.

CD ECM Records Tim Berne's Snakeoil: Shadow Man

2013

Tim Berne's Snakeoil:
Tim Berne - saxofon alto
Oscar Noriega - clarinet, bas clarinet
Matt Mitchell - pian, Wurlitzer
Ches Smith - tobe, percutie, vibrafon

Berne on alto saxophone, Oscar Noriega on clarinets, Matt Mitchell on piano, and Ches Smith on assorted drums, gongs, and vibes deliver half a dozen tunes -- five originals (that range from middle length to exceptionally long) and a deeply moving reading of Paul Motian's ‘Psalm’ -- with striking originality and a deepened focus on dialogue and exchange. Berne's writing is intensely detailed, and never more so than here. He writes motifs and frames that are designed to be lyrical yet open to dialogic improvisational opportunities. [...] Shadow Man's experiment, in trying to capture Snakeoil's live performance in detail and dynamic, is not only successful, it reveals this band at a peak of instinctive, intuitive creativity and imagination.

2015

Tim Berne's Snakeoil:
Tim Berne - saxofon alto
Oscar Noriega - clarinet, bas clarinet
Ryan Ferreira - chitara acustica si electrica
Matt Mitchell - pian, electronice
Ches Smith - tobe, percutie, vibrafon, timpane

Intensely theatrical yet deliberate, New York-based alto saxophonist Tim Berne’s third ECM album runs quite the emotional and compositional gamut. It spans the clang and sweep of ‘Embraceable Me’, the oddly groove-rich ‘Small World In A Small Town’ and the querulous ‘Semi-Self Detached’, and it’s largely a testament – an excellent one – to the long form.[…] This is a quintet of huge ambition and power that punches way above its weight.

Tim Berne's Snakeoil:
Tim Berne - saxofon alto
Oscar Noriega - clarinet, bas clarinet
Ryan Ferreira - chitara electrica
Matt Mitchell - pian, electronice
Ches Smith - tobe, percutie, vibrafon, timpane

Alto saxist/composer Tim Berne has always been known for his energy music – few musicians outside of John Zorn are as comfortable with powerhouse improvisation as Berne. But he’s as much author as performer, and ‘Incidentals’, his fourth LP with current ensemble Snakeoil, highlights his writing as much as his musicians’ playing. […] the centerpiece is ‘Sideshow,’ nearly a half hour of Berne, Noriega, Mitchell and Ferreira exploring every nook and cranny of the piece, going from out to in to somewhere in between, translating the love/hate relationship between chaos and order into a musical journey. […] After as many decades as he’s been active, you’d think Berne might be slowing down in his middle years. But ‘Incidentals’ is proof that he’s just as wired and iconoclastic as ever.
