CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Testament. Paris / London

Noiembrie / Decembrie 2008

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"Since the release of his endlessly influential live record The Köln Concert, Keith Jarrett has done more than any other at the keyboard to clarify improvisation’s infinite shape. When basking in the music that pours from his fingertips, it’s easy to wax poetically from one’s armchair about the effortless brilliance with which he seems to play. Yet Jarrett wants us to know that the process is not all intuition, for often—as is true of the concerts documented here—the physical and emotional challenges are intense, unrelenting. In his liner notes, he lays out the taxing nature of his efforts, saying, “It is NOT natural to sit at a piano, bring no material, clear your mind completely of musical ideas, and play something that is of lasting value and brand new.”

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Personal Mountains

1979 - inregistrat live la Tokyo
Keith Jarrett - pian, percutie
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor
Palle Danielsson - contrabas

ecmreviews.com:
"Despite being recorded in 1979, it would be a full decade before this jewel of a live recording from Keith Jarrett’s unparalleled European quartet (with Jan Garbarek on saxophone, Palle Danielsson on bass, and Jon Christensen on drums) would find itself sleeved and catalogued at last. From note one Personal Mountains paints melodic vistas of great majesty wrapped in a bow of rarified execution.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Rio

Aprilie 2011

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"On 9 April 2011, Keith Jarrett took the stage at the Theatro Municipal in Rio de Janeiro for a concert of improvised music at the piano. Under any other artist’s name, this formula might ring as flat as the disc it’s printed on, bat Jarrett’s fingertips those keys do something unknown even to him. Like a marionette that comes to impossible life in the hands of a master puppeteer, an instrument before Jarrett is a broken circle waiting for its final arc. Rather than hang that circle as one would a mirror on the wall, he rolls it as a child would a hoop down the street. Such is the spirit of abandon that opens his every note like laughter at something intangible, and points to a destination so far away that it returns to its origin.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: No End

1986

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"There seems to be no end to Keith Jarrett’s output, so what better title for this archival gem? Recorded directly to cassette in his personal studio in 1986, No End is in many ways the secular counterpart to Spirits, produced under similar circumstances not a year before. Where that earlier album was something of a catharsis for its one-man band, here the emphasis is on essentials. What’s most delightful to hear in this recording is the foundational emphasis on rhythm. Jarrett has always had a flair for syncopation, and here we can experience that impetus in all its naked precision, conveyed by means less mitigated that we’re used to hearing. Foremost in his toolkit are electric guitar, bass, and drums, with hardly a piano lick in earshot. Girded by a refreshing sense of freedom, an inexhaustible creativity that simply must manifest at the intersection of body and instruments, it spins the wheel consistently and spontaneously.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: La Scala

Februarie 1995

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"February 13, 1995 marks an historic event. It was the first time that Milan’s Teatro alla Scala allowed a jazz musician to headline. Yet Keith Jarrett is, of course, more than his moniker and brings a wealth of music that is no less operatic that what normally graces its stage. For in the same way that opera embodies a flowering intersection of text, acting, and sound, Jarrett unapologetically translates vibration, feeling, and commitment through the lens of the body until their collective prism opens like an eagle’s tail. So begins another of his improvised piano concerts, which in this case augurs a twitch in the skin of space-time until it bleeds.

CD ECM Records Arild Andersen, Paolo Vinaccia, Tommy Smith: In-House Science

2018

Arild Andersen - contrabas
Paolo Vinaccia - tobe
Tommy Smith - saxofon tenor

Norwegian master bassist Arild Andersen’s trio with big-toned tenorist Tommy Smith and powerhouse drummer Paolo Vinaccia is one of the most viscerally exciting jazz small groups of the present moment. Its energies are arguably best captured in a live context, and here the three musicians deliver a characteristically smoking performance at the Villa Rothstein in Bad Ischl, Austria, recorded in September 2016.

Their earlier concert recording Live At Belleville, was issued a decade ago to rave reviews and a shower of awards. “Absolutely and unreservedly marvellous” said the BBC Music Magazine. “How often do just three musicians produce music as vast and panoramic in its scale and vision?” asked Jazzwise, amazed.

CD ECM Records The Gary Burton Quintet & Eberhard Weber: Ring

1974
Gary Burton - vibrafon
Mick Goodrick - chitara
Pat Metheny - chitara
Steve Swallow - bas
Bob Moses - percutie
Eberhard Weber - bas

ecmreviews.com:
"Gary Burton is in a class all his own. On the vibraharp he is pliant yet unbreakable with a certain flair for the understatedly powerful. Among the present company, he is perfectly at ease. No one tries to overpower him, and despite his melodic dominance he never looms for too long, receding into as many shadows as he casts. There’s not a single pretentious note to be heard; the flow between and within tracks barters its way across smooth waters. This is a nocturnal album all the way."

CD ECM Records Eberhard Weber: Resume

1990-2007
Eberhard Weber - bas, claviaturi
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane, fluier
Michael DiPasqua - tobe, percutie

Eberhard Weber played hundreds of concerts in his time as a member of the Jan Garbarek Group, and each of them included an extended feature for the bassist alone, often effectively a spontaneous composition rather than a ‘bass solo’ in strict jazz sense.

For “Résumé” Weber has returned to recordings of these solo sequences and reworked them into an album with its own sense of flow. The unique sound of Eberhard’s customised electric bass is heard here mostly in the context of his own keyboard settings and treatments, but also augmented by the saxophones and overtone flute of Jan Garbarek (on three tracks) and by the percussion of Michael DiPasqua. Based on live recordings made between 1990 and 2007 at locations from Karlsruhe to Santiago, the album was mixed in the South of France by Weber, Manfred Eicher, Michael di Pasqua and Gérard de Haro in 2011.

CD ECM Records Eberhard Weber: Encore

2015
Eberhard Weber - contrabas electric, claviaturi
Ack van Rooyen - flugelhorn

Eberhard Weber returns once more to the many live recordings of his tenure with the Jan Garbarek Group, isolating his bass solos and reworking them into new pieces with the addition of his own keyboard parts. “I became what you might call a composer of New Music,” says Weber, “with the proviso that I make use of old things.

”This season’s special guest is veteran Dutch flugelhorn player Ack van Rooyen. Van Rooyen, who played on Weber’s ECM leader date, The Colours of Chloe more than 40 years ago now adds his own subtle colours to Weber’s contemporary sound-montages. The bass solos were recorded between 1990 and 2007, in thirteen European cities, from Edinburgh to Seville, and the music was mixed and edited at Studios La Buissonne in the South of France in November 2014."

CD ECM Records Arild Andersen, Paolo Vinaccia, Tommy Smith: Live At Belleville

2008
Arild Andersen - contrabas
Paolo Vinaccia - tobe
Tommy Smith - saxofon tenor

Live recording of Arild Andersen’s exciting new trio, playing in Oslo’s Belleville club and at the Drammen Theatre, spurred on by an enthusiastic crowd. Apart from Duke Ellington’s “Prelude To A Kiss”, played with much feeling by Tommy Smith, the music is all written by Andersen, and it burns. “Live At Belleville” may be Arild’s most powerful trio recording since “Triptykon” with Garbarek and Vesala, back in 1972.

CD ECM Records Art Ensemble Of Chicago: Urban Bushmen

1982
Art Ensemble Of Chicago :
Joseph Jarman - saxofoane, clarinet, fagot, flaute, voce
Roscoe Mitchell - saxofoane, flaute, clarinet, bongos, voce
Malachi Favors Maghostut - contrabas, percutie, melodica, voce
Famoudou Don Moye - percutie solara, voce
Lester Bowie - trompeta, corn, tobe, voce

ecmreviews.com:
"While the breadth of the Art Ensemble of Chicago’s palette is certainly astonishing, what distinguishes the group from so many others is not a matter of quantity but of stride. Like its acronym, the heart of the 1980 performance recorded here is a trio of creative shapes: Lester Bowie, Joseph Jarman, and Roscoe Mitchell are wellsprings of improvisatory energy whose intermingling at times describes an entire album’s worth of material in a passing exchange.

CD ECM Records Art Ensemble Of Chicago: Nice Guys

1979
Art Ensemble Of Chicago :
Joseph Jarman - saxofone, clarinet, flaute, scoici, vibrafon, gonguri, congas, voce
Roscoe Mitchell - saxofoane, flaute, oboi, clarinet, gonguri
Malachi Favors Maghostut - contrabas, percutie, melodica
Famoudou Don Moye - percutie solara
Lester Bowie - trompeta, celsta, toba mare

"The legendary Art Ensemble of Chicago, currently in their fifth decade of activity, ended a five-year studio silence with Nice Guys, their debut for ECM at the pinnacle of the label’s output. As children of Chicago’s groundbreaking Association for the Advancement of Creative Musicians (AACM)—which also finds Jack DeJohnette, Anthony Braxton, and Wadada Leo Smith on its formidable roster—Ensemble members bring to every project a sound as eclectic as their technology. Theirs is simply positive music-making that is loads of fun and possesses much to admire. Free of dangerous philosophical trappings and illusions of space, it forges through the loose aesthetic of its performance a circle in which any and all listeners feel included.

CD ECM Records Bobo Stenson Trio: Contra La Indecision

2017

Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Jon Falt - tobe

The great Swedish trio of Bobo Stenson takes a stand against indecision in a decisively beautiful new album. As ever, the trio draws upon a wide range of source materials. A yearning title song by Cuban singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez, Bartók’s adaptation of a Slovak folk song, a piece from Mompou’s Cançons I Danses collection, and Erik Satie’s Elégie are integrated into the programme, alongside original compositions by Stenson and Anders Jormin and group improvising.

CD ECM Records Bobo Stenson Trio: Serenity

2000

Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

Serenity brings the work of the Stenson Trio to a new plateau, drawing on the richness of the jazz tradition, on folk music, Cuban song, 20th century composition, and free playing. The choice of material is inspired. In addition to pieces by each of the trio members and collective improvisations, we hear two pieces by Hanns Eisler, one by Charles Ives, and one by Alban Berg, plus Wayne Shorter's Swee Pee, singer/songwriter Silvio Rodríguez's El Mayor, and two accounts of the Swedish folk tune Polska of Despair by Lorens Brolin.

CD ECM Records Bobo Stenson Trio: Cantando

2008

Bobo Stenson - pian

The reconfigured Bobo Stenson Trio in a performance of characteristically wide arc. Material this time includes original compositions, group improvising and pieces by Peter Eben, Alban Berg, Ornette Coleman, Don Cherry, and Silvio Rodriguez. Master pianist Stenson, long term bassist Anders Jormin and alertly responsive young drummer Jon Fält have developed a richly detailed sound-world like nothing else in modern jazz – at once an extension of the jazz piano tradition and, with its windows opening onto classical music and world folklore, a force apart from it.

CD ECM Records Bobo Stenson Trio: Reflections

1996

Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

AllMusic:
"Bobo Stenson is best known for his longtime association with Charles Lloyd. On his trio set (which has fine support from bassist Anders Jormin and drummer Jon Christensen), he often sounds a bit like Keith Jarrett, Lloyd's pianist of the 1960s. Stenson shows more energy than one might expect to hear on an ECM date, although he also has several introspective explorations. Highlights include a somber "My Man's Gone Now," an impressionistic version of Duke Ellington's "Reflections In D," the Latin feel of "Minidatyr" and a spirited "The Enlightener."

CD ECM Records Bobo Stenson Trio: Goodbye

2005

Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Paul Motian - tobe

Charles Devilbiss, Washington Examiner :
"Goodbye is an expressive showcase for the talents of both men, as well as bassist Anders Jormin, and hews closely to the directions that the principals have forged over their careers, from the Bill Evans era and forward. The trio starts with an intriguing take on Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in The Clowns”, and then truly shines on original contributions, such as Motian’s exotic and minatory “Sudan”, and Jormin’s luminous arrangements of “Alfonsina” by Ariel Ramirez and “Song About Earth” by Vladimir Vyotsky, making this a truly bewitching listen."
