CD ECM Records Paul Bley: With Gary Peacock

1964, 1968

Paul Bley - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Billy Elgart - tobe
Paul Motian - tobe

"From the moment “Blues” (Ornette Coleman) kicks off we’re already caught up in the flow of this magnificently swinging album. The band is in fine form, navigating its melodies with fluid energy. Bley proves his comfort in Coleman territory, easing his way through a series of dexterous detours. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Paul Bley: Live In Oslo

August 2008

Paul Bley - pian

A rare solo performance by one of jazz’s great originals, Canadian pianist Paul Bley, recorded live at the Oslo Jazz Festival in 2008 by Jan Erik Kongshaug and Manfred Eicher. There is nothing else quite like a Paul Bley concert. As the New York Times noted, “Mr. Bley long ago found a way to express his long, elegant, voluminous thoughts in a manner that implies complete autonomy from its given setting but isn't quite free jazz. The music runs on a mixture of deep historical knowledge and its own inviolable principles.' Here Bley, encouraged by an attentive and enthusiastic Norwegian audience shapes music in the moment, plays his own compositions, and brings the music to a fine conclusion in a performance of Sonny Rollins’s “Pent-Up House”.

Dino Saluzzi: Imagenes, Music For Piano

Dino Saluzzi can still surprise us. Who knew that the master of the bandoneon had, for decades, been stockpiling compositions for other instruments? This album of pieces for piano features music written between 1960 and 2002, variously conceived in Salta, Buenos Aires, Stuttgart and on the road. It is music of great diversity, both distinct from and connected to Dino’s work as storytelling, improvising bandoneonist. In this more formal context, liner note writer Hans-Klaus Jungheinrich suggests, Saluzzi’s musical pictures take on an almost cubist quality, like a sequence of images viewed from multiple perspectives. Horacio Lavandera, a young Argentine pianist specialized in both classical music and contemporary composition (he has worked with both Boulez and Stockhausen), is an ideal Saluzzi interpreter, attuned both to his love of his homeland and his artistic need to travel widely.

This is a set of haunting melodies that don’t come from anywhere near the jazz tradition – but an improvisational spark keeps appearing. … There’s a tango classic that develops dark, stealthy investigations in between visits to the main theme, and the title track is a captivating exchange between bandoneon and guitar. There’s a short group improvisation as still as church music, and constant reflections of both the exhilaration and sadness of the tango. The sax sound and guitarist José Saluzzi’s jazzy phrasing broaden this set’s appeal and the spontaneous empathy of the players reaches out. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Dino Saluzzi: Responsorium

2003

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
José María Saluzzi - chitara acustica

“Responsorium” begins where the critically praised “Cité de la Musique” left off, but with the great Argentinian bandoneonist Dino Saluzzi and his guitar playing son José now joined by one of the seminal figures of European modern jazz, Swedish bassist Palle Danielsson. The harmony is wider with Danielsson on board, and all three players seem to have more room to move inside the structures of Dino’s compositions, embellishing the atmospheres of his songs, so full of yearning and sadness and hope.

Armando Alonso - chitara, voce
Guillermo Valalá - bas electric, voce
José María Saluzzi - tobe, percutie, voce
Arto Tuncboyaci - percutie, voce

On this wonderful date from the early 90s, Dino Saluzzi joins brothers Celso (doubling Dino on bandoneón), Felix (on saxophones and clarinet), and drummer José for a true family effort. Fleshed out by guitar, bass, and percussion, the so-called Dino Saluzzi Band strikes out with a solid session from start to finish. Even in such a populated setting, Saluzzi’s characteristic backward glance is as intimate as ever, threading every needle on the horizon with voices from a valued past. His bandoneón bubbles from a fissure of memory as Felix’s gravelly tenor waxes mythic across the plains, but finds its purest sentiment in “Tango a mi padre.” One of my all-time favorite Saluzzi songs, this time it is augmented by a buttery soft soprano. 2005

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Jon Christensen - percutie

Saluzzi is a master of the bandoneon, the monster accordion that has become the principal instrument of modern Argentinian music. His connection with jazz comes through his devotion to improvisation. This collection of 14 shortish pieces is a good way to get into his music because, as you listen, you gradually absorb the idiom in which he works, its harmonic and melodic language and curiously reticent expressive range. … The only other musician involved is the Norwegian percussionist Jon Christensen, who provides subtle rumblings and rattlings in the background. 2011

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Felix Saluzzi - saxofon tenor, clarinet

Cellist Anja Lechner and clarinet and sax man Felix Saluzzi both appeared as soloists on Dino’s orchestral recording “El Encuentro” in 2009, a shared pleasure in the work leading to the formation of the present trio, a group which draws on much musical history. Brothers Dino and Felix have more than 60 years of collaborations behind them. They started making music together as children in Argentina, and Felix frequently plays in Dino’s “family band” projects (as heard on ECM albums including “Mojotoro” and “Juan Condori)”. Anja Lechner has worked closely with Dino since the mid-1990s, beginning with the “Kultrum” alliance between Saluzzi and the Rosamunde Quartet.

Dino Saluzzi - Kultrum - Música para Bandeón y Cuarteto de Cuerdas

The 'Kultrum' collaboration between Argentian bandoneon master Dino Saluzzi and the Munich-based German-Austrian-Australian Rosamunde Quartett was initiated in 1996. Featuring Saluzzi's chamber music for bandoneon and string quartet, Kultrum is both a 'departure' and an extension of Dino's previous ECM recordings in which he acknowledges and then transgresses the boundaries: between composition and improvisation, between so-called serious and popular music, between folk music and jazz and tango. The project has already toured in Europe, to critical and public acclaim, and there is every indication that its appeal will prove very broad-based indeed.

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Anja Lechner - violoncel

Before virtuoso Argentine musician–composer Astor Piazzolla came along in the mid–50’s, the bandoneon (button squeezebox) was primarily known as a sailor’s ‘toy’ accordion.
Twelve years after his death, there’s but one cat with instrumental and compositional chops audaciously iconoclastic enough to walk in El Maestro’s boots: Dino Saluzzi.
The album finds Saluzzi beautifully linking up with Lechner, cellist of the Rosamunde Quartet, to take tango to a dark noirish place that Piazzolla lovers dream of. [ Tom Terrell, Global Rhythm ]

1999

Charles Lloyd - saxofon tenor, taragot, maracas

John Abercrombie - chitara
Larry Grenadier - bas
Billy Higgins - tobe, percutie

AllMusic: "The December 1999 sessions that produced The Water Is Wide yielded enough material for a second album. Hyperion With Higgins is the result, and its title reflects the sad fact that Billy Higgins, Lloyd's friend and soul mate and the session's drummer, passed away not long after the music was put to tape. The music's spiritual quality is heightened by the after-the-fact dedication. Quite unlike The Water Is Wide, Hyperion With Higgins is comprised entirely of Lloyd's original compositions, although the same lineup is featured: Lloyd, Higgins, John Abercrombie, Brad Mehldau, and Larry Grenadier.

AllMusic (Thom Jurek): "No one, save for perhaps Charles Lloyd, could have predicted that when he resumed his recording career in 1989 with ECM, he would scale such artistic heights as a player, a mentor, and a bandleader. Lloyd has taken part in many fascinating musical experiments: with the late Billy Higgins in Sangam with drummer Eric Harland and Indian master percussionist Zakir Hussain, as well as on his many quartet recordings. The latest version, with bassist Reuben Rodgers, Harland, and pianist Jason Moran, has been together just over four years.

AllMusic: " Like 1999's Voice in the Night, The Water Is Wide features Charles Lloyd in the company of one of his dearest friends, drummer Billy Higgins, who would pass away less than a year after the album's release. Guitarist John Abercrombie also remains on board, but Lloyd extends the group's generational span by recruiting two younger players: pianist Brad Mehldau and bassist Larry Grenadier.

AllMusic (Thom Jurek): "Hagar's Song is a deeply intimate, intuitive offering from saxophonist Charles Lloyd and pianist Jason Moran, who has been a key part of Lloyd's quartet since 2008. The program is a collection of standards and originals, as well as one thorny, angular free improvisation ("Pictogram").

Charles Lloyd has always led exceptional bands, and this is one of the finest. Following on from the live “Rabo de Nube” which won both the Readers and Critics Polls of Jazz Times, here is a studio album from the quartet with Jason Moran, Reuben Rogers and Eric Harland. Familiar material is reappraised and transformed in this session recorded in California in December 2009. Tracks include new versions of “Desolation Sound”, “Go Down Moses”, “Lift Every Voice”, and “The Water is Wide”. There are also a couple of superb Thelonious Monk covers, “Ruby, My Dear” and “Monks Mood” and a beautiful, free arrangement of the Beach Boys’ “Caroline No”.

CD ECM Records Charles Lloyd: Voice In The Night

1999

Charles Lloyd - saxofon tenor

Billy Higgins - tobe, percutie

Charles Lloyd's sixth ECM album is both a departure and a homecoming for the Memphis-born and California-based tenorist, introducing new music and revisiting archive favourites (including the epic 'Forest Flower'), and featuring an all-star line-up. With his 'Scandinavian' band currently on hold, this is Lloyd's first all-American album in a long while - Dave Holland qualifies as an honorary American by now - with all the differences of cultural emphasis that this implies. ECM veteran John Abercrombie and legendary drummer Billy Higgins are in great form throughout as they lock in with Lloyd to tackle material ranging from Billy Strayhorn's 'A Flower Is A Lovesome Thing' to the Elvis Costello/Burt Bacharach-penned 'God Give Me Strength' or dig deep into the roots music of the 'Island Blues Suite'.

AllMusic (Thom Jurek) : "Over two CDs, these recordings of Charles Lloyd and his longtime collaborator and friend, the late Billy Higgins, offer perhaps an even more fitting epitaph for the great drummer than the previously issued Water Is Wide and companion album Hyperion With Higgins, both with the Lloyd sextet. These sides were recorded just five months before Higgins' death.

AllMusic: "As Charles Lloyd prepared to kick off a gig at New York's Blue Note club the night of Tuesday September 11, 2001, some murderous terrorists had some other plans for that morning a bit further south. The gig thus didn't begin until that Friday, and the wheels in Lloyd's mind kept on rolling through the aftermath, resulting in this double-CD album.
