“Everything is in a state of transition,” David Torn explained. “Mercury is an element that captures the essence of change.” The changing soundscape of improvisation in the mid-1980s informs the textures and colours of Cloud About Mercury, whose sonorities are closely related to progressive rock (the rhythm section is half of one incarnation of King Crimson) and to the experimental end of ambient music. Drummer Bill Bruford’s affection for this album is undying: “To this day, Torn’s guitar on ‘Three Minutes of Pure Entertainment’ from Cloud About Mercury makes the hairs stand up on the back of my neck.”

New Zealand-born pianist Mike Nock made significant creative contributions to new jazz with the electric group The Fourth Way at the end of the 1960s. Ondas, his sole ECM date, recorded in 1981, finds him leading an acoustic piano trio with an adroit bassist and a free-thinking drummer. Nock’s very open compositions leave plenty of space for each of them to shine. Eddie Gomez’s elastic bass is often a second lead voice in these pieces, and Jon Christensen’s pulses are felt as a succession of waves.

As well as being a mighty bassist, Dave Holland has long been a wise band leader, filling his groups with players of differing background and experience and drawing on their collected knowledge and energies. Holland recognised the individuality of Steve Coleman’s skills as soloist and composer early on and featured him in the quintet alongside veterans Kenny Wheeler and Julian Priester, who also brought in material ‒ as did the leader, whose tune “Homecoming” is among the highlights. Between them, this team could reference the whole history of modern jazz.

Canadian trumpeter Kenny Wheeler was both a major jazz composer and a soloist given to free flights, thriving on the creative tension between lyricism and fiery interplay. Musicians loved the challenges implied in his writing, as is apparent in every minute of this 1983 session. Wheeler and Michael Brecker make a very fine, mutually-inspiring frontline, and Double, Double You also draws upon several long-established creative relationships. Wheeler and Holland had been close musical associates since the 1960s. Holland and DeJohnette established themselves as one of the great rhythm sections in Miles Davis’s band and on many ECM discs (including Kenny’s Gnu High and Deer Wan). And Wheeler and Taylor were forever in each other’s groups, at the time of this recording also playing in the trio Azimuth.

The original conceptual idea for the Brass Project was to set John Surman’s improvising trio with bassist Chris Laurence and drummer John Marshall at the centre of a radiant brass choir of trumpets and trombones. With John Warren invited to contribute compositions and to conduct the group, the Brass Project quickly evolved into a more organic large ensemble, and by the time of this 1992 recording had become one of the most creative configurations in Britain. The elegant arrangements of Warren’s and Surman’s profoundly melodic music inspire many eloquent and touching solos.

The interaction of Eberhard Weber’s highly distinctive bass and Rainer Brüninghaus’ lyrical piano is at the heart of a number of popular ECM recordings, starting with Weber’s Colours of Chloë, and extending through the discographies of the Colours band and the Jan Garbarek Group. But the rapport of the two players was rarely better displayed than on 1976’s The Following Morning, where their dialogues are softly cushioned in attractive arrangements for strings, horns and woodwinds.

Recorded in 1997, Juni was the fourth and final ECM album of the Peter Erskine Trio. A piano trio led by a drummer was an unusual proposal and one that initially surprised listeners who had followed Erskine through louder adventures with Weather Report and the Stan Kenton Big Band. But this alliance with pianist John Taylor, the trio’s primary composer, and bassist Palle Danielsson soon found its own following. Down Beat described the music as “Zen-like” implying that much of its power resided in the not-played. “If such a thing as virtuosic understatement is possible, Peter Erskine's band makes it real,” the Ottawa Citizen agreed.

In Pas(s)ing was Mick Goodrick’s recording debut as leader, after some years with Gary Burton and before that, a spell with Woody Herman. Never very tigerish about self-promotion, Goodrick has spent most of his life teaching in Boston: Jazz Times has called him “perhaps the most influential mentor in the history of jazz guitar.” This 1978 production emphasizes what a creative player he is in his own right, inspired by the great team of players assembled for the session. The playful album title, by the way, alludes to ECM’s first office address, which was, yes, in Pasing.

“Matanë Malit” (Beyond the mountain), Elina Duni’s ECM debut, is a homage to Albania. A singer looking at her roots from a present-day vantage point as a musician engaged in improvisational processes. Jazz experience informs her exploration of Balkan folk songs – with attention to atmosphere, the shape of the sound, the tactility of the structures, the implications of the words, … “It’s about serving the song”, she explains, “and about reclaiming and reinventing it.” Duni found her route to Albanian songs after forays into classical music, blues and jazz standards. Digging deeper into the Balkan region’s troubled history, she has uncovered many songs of real beauty and power, older songs from her homeland and from its vast diaspora. “Matanë Malit” includes songs of lovers, heroes, workers, shepherds, exiles, songs of resistance. Traditional songs arranged by Elina Duni, and new music expressively moulded in the tradition.

The worldwide success of Ulysses' Gaze has shown how convincingly Karaindrou's themes can take on a life of their own. Her melodies have been described as 'dark and brooding, redolent of red wine and the salty brine of the sea, at once plaintive and erotically lyrical.' Karaindrou's score for 'Eternity and a Day' makes poetic use of the instruments of Greek folk music, particularly the sound of the clarinet, keening in the mountain air, or hovering over a rich bourdon of strings.

“How does one leave?”

This question haunts The Suspended Step Of The Stork, Part I of Theo Angelopoulos’s “Borders” trilogy. A film of subcutaneous power, it finds beauty where there is suffering, stark yet foggy, as if through tearful recollection. Peeling layers to the emotional center of Stork is composer Eleni Karaindrou, whose soundtracks were never so much inserted into as bled from the late Greek director’s canvases. Hers is the audio equivalent of a tracking shot, scrolling through face, space, and race with barest touch. “Refugee’s Theme” shrouds the credits like an overture to lives whose variations are leaves on a tree of displacement.

Of those lives we get only leitmotifs, each seeming far too short in the grander symphony of human suffering. Like the bodies floating in the opening shot, they bob at the whim of two rhythms: one natural, the other mechanical. [ ecm reviews ]

The album consists of Eleni Karaindrou’s original music, a fact which gives independence to the work and significance not limited by its function as a soundtrack. The music has such immense dynamic and such active narrative power … that you can feel the film even if you haven’t yet watched it!

An exquisite musical fresco in black and white. This is how we can characterise and describe Eleni Karaindrou's musical work, which has emerged out of Antonis Antypas' theatrical interpretation of Euripides' "Trojan Women". The play was presented in Epidaurus in 2001 and is still intensely moving both for Easterners and Westerners. In the production the music accompanies and assists the drama as a faithful friend and companion. Now, in the recorded version, it is the drama which assists and serves the music as a faithful friend-companion. The thirty brief musical moments from the performance which form the discographic unit, thirty vibrations of sound and rhythm, umbued with the scent of genuineness, transform the grandeur of the drama in an awesome way, resurrecting memory and igniting imagination. A timeless anti-war cry, an incessant lament: this is what Euripides' tragedy is.

ECM’s Manfred Eicher acted as artistic director for this 2010 live concert, bringing in the likes of Jan Garbarek and the brillant violinist Kim Kshkashian as soloists. There are marvellous things here. Karaindrou’s style is generally understated and subtle. Colours are muted, tempi tend to be restrained. Yet the music always moves, seems to be going somewhere and has something definite to say – there’s a welcome lack of ambient, moody blandness. [...] Kashkashian’s viola solos are sublime. The most remarkable thing about this CD is the wondrous sound. It’s warm, rich and detailed. I ended up listening to this in a darkened room, endlessly replaying the four-minute Dance from Ulysses’ Gaze. So good you’ll rush out immediately and buy copies for all your cinephile friends.
