CD ECM Records Steve Swallow: Damaged In Transit

2002

Steve Swallow - bas
Chris Potter - saxofon tenor
Adam Nussbaum - tobe

In November 2002, the Steve Swallow Trio, also known as Damaged In Transit, blazed its way across Europe in a three-week tour that reached peak performances at its climax in France. It is from these French dates that "Damaged In Transit", the album, is drawn. The stripped-down sax/bass/drums line-up gives all players room to move, and the context makes a particularly impressive showcase for Chris Potter, whose solos are supercharged by the interaction of bassist Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum.

Michael Mantler - dirijor

German-born composer/trumpeter Michael Mantler and his then-wife Carla Bley were instrumental in developing within jazz the idea of self-sufficiency and independence from established record companies. Their creation of the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, with recordings released on their own label, was the culmination of this endeavor, and the first recording was one of the masterpieces of creative music in the '60s. Mantler had come from the European avant-classical tradition and sought to provide an orchestral framework supporting some of the most advanced musicians in avant-garde jazz -- and he succeeded magnificently. His style tends toward the brooding and darkly romantic with harsh, cynical edges, a perfect foil for the robust, shackle-breaking improvisations found herein. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Dave Holland Quartet: Conference Of The Birds

1972

Dave Holland - contrabas
Sam Rivers - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, flaut
Anthony Braxton - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, flaut
Barry Altschul - percutie, marimba

An album of driving, progressive jazz it is also of historical significance as the only occasion when Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton, two of the music’s most strikingly original saxophonists, recorded together. Inside Dave’s compositions they could meet – if briefly - and share ideas.

This summit meeting received raves from the press. “If you’ve found the new music lacking in swing, cohesion and variety, get to this album,” insisted Down Beat in a five star review. “It’s Holland’s date but each man contributes equally. The six Holland tunes offer great improvisational frameworks, and his bass playing, both arco and pizzicato, couldn’t be better… Don’t miss this one.”

Interpreti:

ecmreviews:
"After bringing his Midas touch to the projects of Eberhard Weber, it was only a matter of time before Rainer Brüninghaus would be given an opportunity to lead, and did so at last to soaring effect on Freigeweht (Free-blown) with a group of sympathetic musicians and a compositional aptitude to match."

CD ECM Records Jazz Ensemble Des HR: Atmospheric Conditions Permitting

1995

Tony Scott - clarinet
Joki Freund - saxofon tenor
Heinz Sauer - saxofon tenor, sintetizator
Albert Mangelsdorff - trombon
Ralf-R. Huebner - tobe
Bob Degen - pian
Bill Frisell - chitara
Eberhard Weber - bas
Rainer Bruninghaus - pian electric
Paul Lovens - tobe, percutie
Lee Konitz - saxofon alto
Wilhelm Liefland - narator

Subtitled 'radio recordings 1967-1993', Atmospheric Conditions Permitting enters the archives of Frankfurt Radio (Hessischer Rundfunk) and retrieves material from 31 sessions featuring a total of 50 musicians. The resultant double CD amounts to a panorama of German jazz, primarily featuring the long-established Jazzensemble des Hessichen Rundfunks (founded 1958) as well as groups of overlapping personnel, such as the Albert Mangelsdorff Quintet and the Joki Freund Septet. But there are also appearances by guest musicians. These include an Alexander von Schlippenbach band deconstructing a walz, the Thomas Heberer-Aki Takase duo reworking a 50-year-old German pop song, and Bulgarians Milcho Leviev and Theodossij Spassov exploring the interface between Eastern European folk and modern jazz, with Spassov soloing persuasively on the kaval.

CD ECM Records Kenny Wheeler Quintet: The Widow In The Window

1990

Kenny Wheeler - Flugelhorn, trompete
John Abercrombie - chitara
John Taylor - pian
Dave Holland - contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe

Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and his sidemen on this quintet CD (guitarist John Abercrombie, pianist John Taylor, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Peter Erskine) had all worked together previously in different settings. Their familiarity with each other's playing came in handy for the frequently intuitive session which consists of explorations of six of Wheeler's complex but often-melodic originals (including "The Widow in the Window," "Hotel Le Hot" and the lengthy "Ana"). Kenny Wheeler's music occupies its own unique area between post bop and free jazz and virtually all of his recordings are recommended to adventurous listeners, including this one. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Jack DeJohnette: In Movement

2016

Jack DeJohnette: tobe, pian, percutie electronica
Ravi Coltrane: saxofoane
Matthew Garrison: bas electric, electronice

"There is something of the "six degrees of separation" theory at work in this newly formed trio, led loosely, by the great Jack DeJohnette. The drummer/multi-instrumentalist works in the company of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane whose lineage is well known, and bassist/electronic artist Matthew Garrison whose father Jimmy Garrison was the bassist in John Coltrane's classic quartet. And, of course, DeJohnette, early in his career, played with the fathers of both of his trio mates. [ AllAboutJazz ]

CD ECM Records Avishai Cohen: Cross My Palm With Silver

2017

Avishai Cohen - trompeta
Yonathan Avishai - pian
Barak Mori - contrabas
Nasheet Waits - tobe

If trumpeter Avishai Cohen's ECM debut, Into The Silence was a work of deeply personal content, Cross My Palm With Silver plays out with the same emotional impact, but on a global stage. Cohen composed the five pieces on this album in his native Israel, while contemplating the impact of political division on the human psyche. His hope is that the music contributes to a healing process. [ AllAboutJazz ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Eyes Of The Heart

1979
Keith Jarrett - pian, saxofon sopran
Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor, tamburina, maracas
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Paul Motian - tobe, percutie

This live recording features pianist Keith Jarrett (also playing a bit of soprano), tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian performing the 33-minute title cut and an 18-minute piece simply called "Encore."

Every recording by this particular group (arguably Jarrett's best working ensemble) is well worth hearing, for they had their own sound and the ability to play both "inside" and "outside" simultaneously, and they were continually full of surprises. Originally released as a two-LP set with the fourth side completely blank, the intriguing music has since been reissued as a single CD. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Dewey Redman Quartet: The Struggle Continues

1982

Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor
Charles Eubanks - pian
Mark Helias - contrabas
Ed Blackwell - tobe

Dewey was showing the way with this supremely hip meeting between bop, blues and freedom. Veering between the joyously abstract bop of the opener to the wonderfully raunchy, low-down R&B of ‘Turn over Baby’, the self-taught Texan’s throaty, avant-blues gregariousness receives top notch support. Ed Blackwell’s buoyant rhythms are loose and pithy at the same time. Meanwhile, ex-Motown pianist Charles Eubanks is an intelligent, underrated player… Another underrated player, Mark Helias, was a key member of Blackwell’s group and combines superbly, contributing a series of dextrous solos too. … A welcome reissue. CD ECM Records Charlie Haden, Carla Bley: The Ballad Of The Fallen

1983

Charlie Haden - bas
Carla Bley - pian, glockenspiel, aranjamente
Don Cherry - trompetaSharon Freeman French Horn
Mick Goodrick - chitara
Jack Jeffers - tuba
Michael Mantler - trompeta
Paul Motian - tobe, percutie
Jim Pepper - saxofoane, flaut
Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor
Steve Slagle - saxofoane, clarinet, flaut
Gary Valente - trombon

The outbursts of free improvisation throughout the album contrast the beautiful songs and add a confrontational side of protest to the music. After all the issues at hand do piss off these musicians. In a surprising move Downbeat Magazine selected Ballad of the Fallen as Jazz album of the year in 1984. ECM was a favorite label on the magazine in the early 80s. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago – Full Force won in 1981 and Old and New Dreams – Playing in 1982.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Standards In Norway

1995

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

Keith Jarrett has recorded quite a few albums with his "Standards Trio," which also features bassist Gary Peacock and drummer Jack DeJohnette, and virtually all of their releases are enjoyable. The music that they create is in some ways an update of the type of interplay that took place between Bill Evans and his sidemen, where all three musicians often act as equals (although Jarrett, like Evans, has most of the solo space). An uptempo "Love Is a Many-Splendored Thing" is a surprising highpoint of this disc but also quite memorable are "All of You," "Old Folks" and "How About You?"; none of the eight performances from the concert appearance are throwaways. Jarrett's vocal sounds are more restrained than usual while his piano playing is in peak form. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Radiance

2002

Keith Jarrett - pian

AllMusic: "Keith Jarrett returned to performing and recording solo concerts in 1995 with La Scala (released in 1997) after recovering from an illness. That fine recording followed his manner of working that he had begun on Koln Concert in 1975: That is, completely improvised concerts from beginning to end that had melodic and "motivic" centers. The double-disc set that is Radiance, recorded in Japan in 2002, is a new fork in the road. The work has no conceptual center. Jarrett says he wanted to let some of the music "happen" to him while he sat at the piano, deep in thought. He states: "I wanted my hands (particularly the left hand) to tell me things." And happen it does.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Solo Concerts Bremen / Lausanne

Martie / Iulie 1973

Keith Jarrett - pian

"In his timeless solo concerts, Jarrett displays the uncanny ability to drop himself into a piece of improvised music as if it has been playing invisibly in the ether all along, requiring him only to pick up from whichever measure he encounters and leave the music to continue on after he has left the stage. This album predates Jarrett’s Köln concert by just two years and was the one that really put him on the map before that legendary successor. Yet we cannot simply say that Jarrett is channeling the cosmos and leave it at that, for he inhabits a melodic space that is tangible, his own. Though filed under jazz, this music is something far more than any generic summary could express. Still, I persist in trying. [ ecmreviews.com ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Paris Concert

1988

Keith Jarrett - pian

AllMusic:
"The self-imposed quarantine on solo concerts over, Keith Jarrett returned to the improvisatory format that he virtually invented, mellower and more devotional than ever. Indeed, within the 38 minutes of solo improvisation captured at Paris's Salle Pleyel, Jarrett pulls further away from the old rousing (and thoroughly American) gospel, blues and folk roots of earlier concerts toward a more abstract concept. Opening with a soaring, lyrical canonic melody, he rambles through his familiar obsessive hammering, grand tremolos, and the like before topping it off with an ethereal tune that turns somber.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Hymns / Spheres

1976

Keith Jarrett - orga

“Hymns/Spheres”, Keith Jarrett’s celebrated 1976 encounter with the Trinity organ of Ottobeuren’s Benedictine abbey, is at last released in its entirety on CD in this double-disc set prepared from the original analog tapes. “No overdubs or technical ornamentations were utilized, only the pure sound of the organ in the abbey is heard”. The pure sound, as channelled by the mind, hands, and feet of one of the great improvisers of the age. When “Hymns/Spheres” was first released in 1976, some critics made comparisons with the organ music of Ligeti, Messiaen and Reger, but time has shown this to be an essential expression of Jarrett’s creativity, original to the core.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: The Melody At Night, With You

1998

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"The Melody At Night, With You was my first Keith Jarrett solo album. And perhaps it was in a way for Jarrett, too. It interprets some of the greatest names in the American songbook—Duke Ellington, the Gershwins, Oscar Hammerstein and Jerome Kern, Oscar Levant, among others—yet tells their stories as if we’ve never heard them before. More than just another standards album in absence of his trio, this is the pianist at his purest. He approaches the music as a composer approaches a blank staff: which is to say, with wonder.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: The Carnegie Hall Concert

Septembrie 2005

Keith Jarrett - pian

ecmreviews:
"After a long preparatory breath, the experienced gardener digs his fingers into the soil: this is what it feels like to put on Keith Jarrett’s The Carnegie Hall Concert. The ensuing harvest offers a veritable rainbow of sonic fruits and vegetables, each with its distinct shape, texture, and flavor. Such is Jarrett’s post-millennial approach, which finds just as much depth in the self-fulfilling vignette as in the arcing narratives of years past. From heartaching lyricism (Part III) to mystical convolutions (Part IV), elegiac resolutions (Part V) to anthemic revelries (Part VII), the language of contrast is alive and well.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett Quartet: Sleeper

inregistrat live in 1979 la Tokyo
Keith Jarrett - pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor
Palle Danielsson - bas

AllMusic: "The double album Sleeper contains a previously unreleased live concert by Keith Jarrett's European quartet from the '70s, recorded at Tokyo's Nakano Sun Plaza on April 16, 1979.

Together with saxophonist Jan Garbarek, bassist Palle Danielsson, and drummer Jon Christensen, Jarrett performs seven of his own compositions: "Personal Mountains," "Innocence," "So Tender," "Oasis," "Chant of the Soil," "Prism," and "New Dance" -- the latter song being the shortest here at seven minutes, while "Oasis" clocks in at over 28 minutes!
