CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: At The Blue Note - The Complete Recordings

1994

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - tobe
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

In June 1994 over three extraordinary nights at the celebrated Blue Note in New York City, Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio took American jazz to new heights. Keith Jarrett At The Blue Note - The Complete Recordings (six CDs) captures every tune from every set from every night - a unique documentation of one of this decade's greatest performances. 'Jarrett makes each new note sound like a discovery ... The music whispered and glimmered, seeking a pure, incorporeal song.'

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Still Live

1986

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - bas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic: "Once Keith Jarrett gets into a concept, he likes to keep those tapes rolling. This two-disc live outpouring from a Standards Trio gig at Munich's Philharmonic Hall was the biggest offering from this group up to that time (it wouldn't hold that distinction for long) -- and once again, Jarrett treats his brace of pop and jazz standards with unpredictable, often eloquently melodic and structural originality.

To cite a pair of highlights: "Autumn Leaves" always seems to bring out an endless flow of invention from Jarrett, and "The Song Is You" gets off to a rollicking start and maintains a nearly relentless energy level for 17 minutes, closing with a Spanish vamp. Again, the rapport with his onetime jazz-rock associate, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock is total; DeJohnette's mastery of shifting cymbal patterns while maintaining the pulse acts on the trio like a loose tether made of carbon steel. There is a considerable amount of Jarrett vocalizing, though; sometimes he sounds like a tortured animal. "

AllAboutJazz :

"Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel made a big splash early in his career, playing with vibraphonist Gary Burton and recording for PolyGram Records (including 1990's The Promise, produced by Burton). Since founding his own label Material Records in 2000 he has had a somewhat lower profile, although in addition to a number of his projects the label released From A Dream (2009), the stunning debut of the cooperative trio MGT (with fellow guitarists Slava Grigoryan and Ralph Towner). Muthspiel made his ECM debut with that trio on 2013's Travel Guide, followed by his leader debut in 2014 with the trio album Driftwood (with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade).

This album is one arc, one musical environment. Rapt atmospheres descend, then evolve. Muthspiel is a romantic, but he is also technically astute and concise. He plays very few nonessential notes. The essence of the Eicher aesthetic is cinematic. [ Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times ]

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Slava Grigoryan: Travel Guide

2012
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica si cu 12 corzi
Wolfgang Muthspiel - chitara electrica, voce
Slava Grigoryan - chitara clasica si chitara bariton

Since they first made festival appearances together in 2005 and recorded ‘From a Dream’ in 2009, the guitar trio of American Ralph Towner, Austrian Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Kazhak Slava Grigoryan, has shown a remarkable sense of discipline, subtlety, and balance. ‘Travel Guide’ is the occasional group's debut for ECM. Its ten tunes were written by either Muthspiel or Towner. The tonal qualities on all of these tracks are beautifully nuanced: Muthspiel plays electric guitar, Towner classical and 12-string, and Grigoryan classical and baritone guitars. These compositions weren't written for these players to showcase their solo chops, but rather as songs with limited but impeccable improvisation. [...]. ‘Travel Guide’ is an understated, uncluttered gem of virtuosity and composition. The unselfish sense of deference between these players reveals not only their comfort with one another, but the collective confidence of a uniquely voiced, developing group. CD ECM Records CIRCLE: Paris Concert

1972

Chick Corea - pian
Anthony Braxton - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, percutie
Barry Altschul - percutie
David Holland - contrabas, violoncel

Supergrup Free-Jazz

Circle was a band on fire with creativity. Chick Corea and Dave Holland had just left Miles Davis’s band, keen to explore all parameters of new music in an improvised context. Anthony Braxton, equally inspired by Stockhausen and Coltrane, brought in new directions from the AACM. Barry Altschul’s resumé included extensive work with Paul Bley. Together they were, for a while, matchless. Corea called the Paris Concert (recorded 1971) the realization of a dream. Melody Maker: “Paris Concert is evidence that here was one of the most excitingly talented bands of recent years, for these 94 minutes of music simply burst with vigorous invention.”

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko & Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Lontano

2006
Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

"This album was recorded at the end of a tour in which frequent collaborators Polish trumpeter Tomasz Stanko and the trio featuring gifted pianist Marcin Wasilewski had begun to investigate more improv-oriented methods, and it's freer and more organically generated than its predecessors.

The title track appears in three long manifestations through the set, with the first part in particular sounding like an all-but-perfect contemporary jazz/improv ensemble piece, developing from slow musings through sputtery, 60s-Miles trumpet eruptions, a series of Hancock-meets-Jarrett surges from Wasilewski, and eventually a subtly insinuating groove. Wasilewski's flowing energy ideally complements Stanko's timing and sense of space, but the whole empathetic foursome sounds more of one mind than ever." [ The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Faithful

2011
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

Dazzling third ECM album by Poland’s Wasilewski Trio, which perfectly captures the group’s blend of energy and lyricism. There is space here for both the outgoing and the reflective, for profound composition and in-the-moment creativity. The wide-ranging repertoire on “Faithful” (named after the Ornette Coleman title track) includes five new tunes from the pen of Marcin Wasilewski and timeless pieces by Paul Bley and Hermeto Pascoal. From the standard repertory, the trio plays “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men”. Reaching beyond jazz, the players also find a new approach to Hanns Eisler’s “An den kleinen Radioapparat”.

2002
Tomasz Stanko - trompeta

Exceptional balladesque album by the great darktoned trumpeter and his excellent young Polish quartet. There is a timeless feel to 'Soul of Things' that relates to Stanko's roots as a player. The forward-looking musician is also looking back here, and re-connecting with early influences. He triggers memories of his first heroes - memories of Miles, memories of Chet Baker - in his lonesome, soulful soliloquies.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko & Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Suspended Night

2004
Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas

In the two years since Tomasz Stanko’s much-loved “Soul of Things”, both the trumpeter and his young Polish band have continued to make their mark. Many miles of touring, on both sides of the Atlantic, have honed their already exceptional group understanding.

“Suspended Night” builds upon the conceptual framework established by its predecessor – the bulk of the album is devoted to a series of haunting and soulful “Suspended Variations” - but the improvisational quotient is expanded, as all participants take more solo space, and more chances.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko Septet: Litania - Music Of Krzystof Komeda

1997

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Bernt Rosengren - saxofon tenor
Joakim Milder - saxofon tenor si sopran
Bobo Stenson - pian
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe
Terje Rypdal - guitar

Krzysztof Komeda (1931-1969) wrote music for more than 40 films, including classics of the Polish cinema by Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda, and Polanski brought him to Hollywood to work on Rosemary's Baby. His soundtrack music, however, was only part of his achievement. Komeda almost singelehandedly instigated the modern jazz movement in Poland and made important contributions toward the shaping of a European aesthetic in jazz composition. Tomasz Stanko was Komeda's closest musical associate. At ECM's urging, Stanko returned to the archive to reinvestigate Komeda's work, rearranging both his intensely melodic film themes and his extended compositions for an all-star Scandinavian band.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko Quartet: Leosia

1997

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Tony Oxley - tobe

The second ECM album from this Polish-Swedish-British edition of the Tomasz Stanko Quartet follows the critically-heralded Matka Joanna. As Jazz Journal wrote, 'Trumpeter Stanko's vibrant breadth of tone and poetic feeling for cross-rhythmic drama are second to none.' Leosia marks a further progression, incorporating six first-rate Stanko compositions in his brooding 'Slavic' style, darker than the darkest Miles (and incorporating a tribute to Lautréamont, literature's Count of Darkness), as well as bracing and exploratory duo and trio improvisations, and solos of the higherst calibre by all concerned. The group has an unusual claim on idiomatic completeness; it seems to summarize, in highly original manner, many of the important developments of jazz of the last 30 years. Stanko, however, distances himself from the general drift toward reinterpretation of standards in the 1990s. His bent notes, slurs, smears and violent fanfares are put to the service of a new group music.

1999

Anders Jormin - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

After his critical and popular success with Litania, revitalizing the music of his countryman Komeda, Poland's Stanko, possessor of perhaps the darkest trumpet sound in jazz, resurfaces here in quite a different context, with associates from everywhere. Bandeonista from Argentina, reedman from England's south coast, classical violinist from Detroit, bassist from Sweden. Only veteran Norwegian drummer Jon Christensen is retained from the Litania session, although a sense of continuity is maintained by Saulzzi, who brings a wistful regret to his interpretation of a Komeda theme. Otherwise Stanko and John Surman share composer credits as well as the special understanding that belongs only to the most lyrical improvisers.

1995

Tomasz Stanko - trompeta
Bobo Stenson - pian
Anders Jormin - contrabas
Tony Oxley - tobe

Backed by pianist Bobo Stenson, bassist Anders Jormin, and drummer Tony Oxley (in a decidedly Christensenian mode), Stanko brings his pungent lyricism to bear across a swath of mountains and shadows that inhales cobwebs from a “Monastery In The Dark” and exhales the mummified sermons of its “Klostergeist.” Within those lungs mingle forgotten bells, vibrating between prayer and dreams, and chains of latent virtues. Jormin’s bass squeaks like a family of mice in the walls, Stenson the cat stalking them from every alcove. [ ecm reviews ]

Stanko likes to draw his inspirations from various artistic corners. And that is good to know. But one can just listen to this storyteller and imagine his or her own fantasy, draw from this music what one would like that relates to their own life or lives. It is a continuing marvel to realize how this veteran of the European jazz scene keeps coming up with new players to help him realize his evocative and truly different musical visions, visions that combine the freewheeling jazz aesthetic with his more composerly, mysterious elements of composition. AllMusic: "Tenor saxophonist Sam Rivers (also heard on soprano and flute) teams up in a quartet with trombonist George Lewis, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Thurman Barker (doubling on marimba) for a date that certainly defies the stereotype of a typical ECM session. The seven Rivers originals, although sometimes having colorful melodies, are quite complex. However, the intriguing and very alert interplay between the brilliant musicians makes the music seem fairly logical and worth exploring by adventurous listeners. "

ecmreviews:
"If one were to draw a line between the ensemble aesthetics of Eberhard Weber and Keith Jarrett, then one might plot the compositions of orchestral jazz legend Mike Gibbs somewhere along the way. Born in 1937 in what was then Southern Rhodesia, and a graduate of Boston’s Berklee College of Music, Gibbs has laid down a musical path as diverse as his travels. On Seven Songs for Chamber Orchestra, one gains vision of a mind looking not so much to cross over into uncharted waters as to expand the inclusivity of jazz’s already broad topography. At the heart of this project is Gibbs’s most famous student, the inimitable Gary Burton, who presents a lovingly realized program of his mentor’s own design.
