CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Tokyo'96

1996

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

ecmreviews:
"Keith Jarrett’s trend-setting standards trio returns to Japan in celebration of its 15th year in this commanding live recording, which from bare pianistic threads spins an up-tempo version of “It Could Happen To You” to kick things off just right. With DeJohnette’s brushes flying and Peacock likewise enamored, free and easy exchanges abound. At this point we’re already hooked, so that “Never Let Me Go” becomes a mantra to guide us through the rest. There’s so much tenderness from Jarrett here, it’s a wonder he can emote with so little vocal breach. This, along with Peacock’s soulful slides, makes for one of the most heartwarming tracks in the trio’s output. Peacock’s early lepidopteran solo in “Summer Night” traces Jarrett’s masterful story arc word for word and shifts into high gear for “John’s Abbey” in a chain of powerful music-making. The trio’s sparkling rendition of “Billie’s Bounce” is a splash of cold water on the face. Jarrett’s right hand slaloms through the left’s gentle punctuations before a concluding solo from DeJohnette puts the icing on this positively exuberant cake. It’s one of a few standout moments from the drummer, who relays hand percussion and hi-hat in “I’ll Remember April” and leads the trio into an organic fadeout. All of which makes the relatively brief “Mona Lisa” a magical moment. Painting with a dark and bar-lit hue, its grandeur is obscured, embraced, inhaled.

2000

ecmreviews:
"Of his approach to this 2001 album, recorded live the year before in London, pianist Keith Jarrett says, “Don’t ask. Don’t think. Don’t anticipate. Just participate.” Where for so long he and his partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette had served up piping hot new takes on old recipes, here they decided to do away with all that and, with the exception of their version of the evergreen “When I Fall In Love” that concludes, let the music create itself. What in others’ hands would have been a risky venture turns into a balanced, intuitive record from these most capable sound-smiths.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Somewhere

2009

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas

AllMusic (Thom Jurek):
"It is almost superfluous to write about Keith Jarrett's three-decades-and-running standards trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. Given their recorded output, it's easy to discern why they are regarded by many as the greatest living piano trio. They have continued to imbue the standards book with new dimensions of meaning, creating a near symbiotic dialogue in harmonic and rhythmic invention while remaining emotionally resonant.

The performances on Somewhere were recorded in 2009, and are the first offerings by the group on record in four years, though they continue to play select dates annually. Since their three previous releases were all taken from a 2001 tour, this show reflects an eight-year growth period. The opener is a Jarrett improvisation entitled "Deep Space," which is a building block solo intro to Miles Davis' "Solar," and which this group has recorded before -- several times in fact -- but never with the kind of lyric audacity and rumbling low-end counterpoint that Peacock puts on offer here. There's a popping read of Harold Arlen's and Ted Koehler's "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," with Jarrett playing chunky, staggered chords that manage to slip 4/4 as he dialogues with DeJohnette. The pair go at the time signature from both ends, refusing its authority until not to do so would result in its collapse. Peacock binds their conversation while finding his own way in and out of an implied yet never directly engaged sense of swing.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Always Let Me Go

2001

Keith Jarrett - pian

AllMusic:
"Recorded live in Tokyo in April 2001, Always Let Me Go is Keith Jarrett's 149th concert in Japan. Joined by his long-standing partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, these performances are playful, explosive, somber, and completely improvised. After 20 years of working together, they trust each other (and the audience) enough to deliver over two hours of unscripted music. DeJohnette prowls through his drums like a restless cougar: he chatters, scuffles, and pounces on the skins with agility. Likewise, Peacock spoons out a concrete foundation of bass; one that bubbles as it spreads through the cracks in Jarrett's 88 keys (which serve the pianist so very well). For listeners familiar with the trio's Inside Out CD, here is the same idea further elaborated on.

1994

In June 1994 over three extraordinary nights at the celebrated Blue Note in New York City, Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio took American jazz to new heights. Keith Jarrett At The Blue Note - The Complete Recordings (six CDs) captures every tune from every set from every night - a unique documentation of one of this decade's greatest performances. 'Jarrett makes each new note sound like a discovery ... The music whispered and glimmered, seeking a pure, incorporeal song.'

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Still Live

1986

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - bas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic: "Once Keith Jarrett gets into a concept, he likes to keep those tapes rolling. This two-disc live outpouring from a Standards Trio gig at Munich's Philharmonic Hall was the biggest offering from this group up to that time (it wouldn't hold that distinction for long) -- and once again, Jarrett treats his brace of pop and jazz standards with unpredictable, often eloquently melodic and structural originality.

To cite a pair of highlights: "Autumn Leaves" always seems to bring out an endless flow of invention from Jarrett, and "The Song Is You" gets off to a rollicking start and maintains a nearly relentless energy level for 17 minutes, closing with a Spanish vamp. Again, the rapport with his onetime jazz-rock associate, drummer Jack DeJohnette, and bassist Gary Peacock is total; DeJohnette's mastery of shifting cymbal patterns while maintaining the pulse acts on the trio like a loose tether made of carbon steel. There is a considerable amount of Jarrett vocalizing, though; sometimes he sounds like a tortured animal. "

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: After The Fall

2018
Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

The group colloquially known as “the Standards trio” has made many outstanding recordings, and After The Fall must rank with the very best of them. “I was amazed to hear how well the music worked,” writes Keith Jarrett in his liner note. “For me, it’s not only a historical document, but a truly great concert.” This performance – in Newark, New Jersey in November 1998 – marked Jarrett’s return to the concert stage after a two year hiatus. Joined by improvising partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, he glides and soars through classics of the Great American Songbook including “The Masquerade Is Over”, “Autumn Leaves”, “When I Fall In Love” and “I’ll See You Again”. There are also breath-taking accounts of hallowed bebop tunes including Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From The Apple”, Bud Powell’s “Bouncin’ With Bud” and Sonny Rollins’s “Doxy”.

AllAboutJazz :

"Austrian guitarist Wolfgang Muthspiel made a big splash early in his career, playing with vibraphonist Gary Burton and recording for PolyGram Records (including 1990's The Promise, produced by Burton). Since founding his own label Material Records in 2000 he has had a somewhat lower profile, although in addition to a number of his projects the label released From A Dream (2009), the stunning debut of the cooperative trio MGT (with fellow guitarists Slava Grigoryan and Ralph Towner). Muthspiel made his ECM debut with that trio on 2013's Travel Guide, followed by his leader debut in 2014 with the trio album Driftwood (with bassist Larry Grenadier and drummer Brian Blade).

This album is one arc, one musical environment. Rapt atmospheres descend, then evolve. Muthspiel is a romantic, but he is also technically astute and concise. He plays very few nonessential notes. The essence of the Eicher aesthetic is cinematic. [ Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times ]

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner, Wolfgang Muthspiel, Slava Grigoryan: Travel Guide

2012
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica si cu 12 corzi
Wolfgang Muthspiel - chitara electrica, voce
Slava Grigoryan - chitara clasica si chitara bariton

Since they first made festival appearances together in 2005 and recorded ‘From a Dream’ in 2009, the guitar trio of American Ralph Towner, Austrian Wolfgang Muthspiel, and Kazhak Slava Grigoryan, has shown a remarkable sense of discipline, subtlety, and balance. ‘Travel Guide’ is the occasional group's debut for ECM. Its ten tunes were written by either Muthspiel or Towner. The tonal qualities on all of these tracks are beautifully nuanced: Muthspiel plays electric guitar, Towner classical and 12-string, and Grigoryan classical and baritone guitars. These compositions weren't written for these players to showcase their solo chops, but rather as songs with limited but impeccable improvisation. [...]. ‘Travel Guide’ is an understated, uncluttered gem of virtuosity and composition. The unselfish sense of deference between these players reveals not only their comfort with one another, but the collective confidence of a uniquely voiced, developing group. CD ECM Records CIRCLE: Paris Concert

1972

Chick Corea - pian
Anthony Braxton - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, percutie
Barry Altschul - percutie
David Holland - contrabas, violoncel

Supergrup Free-Jazz

Circle was a band on fire with creativity. Chick Corea and Dave Holland had just left Miles Davis’s band, keen to explore all parameters of new music in an improvised context. Anthony Braxton, equally inspired by Stockhausen and Coltrane, brought in new directions from the AACM. Barry Altschul’s resumé included extensive work with Paul Bley. Together they were, for a while, matchless. Corea called the Paris Concert (recorded 1971) the realization of a dream. Melody Maker: “Paris Concert is evidence that here was one of the most excitingly talented bands of recent years, for these 94 minutes of music simply burst with vigorous invention.”

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Faithful

2011
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

Dazzling third ECM album by Poland’s Wasilewski Trio, which perfectly captures the group’s blend of energy and lyricism. There is space here for both the outgoing and the reflective, for profound composition and in-the-moment creativity. The wide-ranging repertoire on “Faithful” (named after the Ornette Coleman title track) includes five new tunes from the pen of Marcin Wasilewski and timeless pieces by Paul Bley and Hermeto Pascoal. From the standard repertory, the trio plays “The Ballad of the Sad Young Men”. Reaching beyond jazz, the players also find a new approach to Hanns Eisler’s “An den kleinen Radioapparat”.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko & Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Soul Of Things

2002
Tomasz Stanko - trompeta

Exceptional balladesque album by the great darktoned trumpeter and his excellent young Polish quartet. There is a timeless feel to 'Soul of Things' that relates to Stanko's roots as a player. The forward-looking musician is also looking back here, and re-connecting with early influences. He triggers memories of his first heroes - memories of Miles, memories of Chet Baker - in his lonesome, soulful soliloquies.

CD ECM Records Tomasz Stanko & Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Suspended Night

2004

In the two years since Tomasz Stanko’s much-loved “Soul of Things”, both the trumpeter and his young Polish band have continued to make their mark. Many miles of touring, on both sides of the Atlantic, have honed their already exceptional group understanding.

“Suspended Night” builds upon the conceptual framework established by its predecessor – the bulk of the album is devoted to a series of haunting and soulful “Suspended Variations” - but the improvisational quotient is expanded, as all participants take more solo space, and more chances.

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Spark Of Life

2018
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe
Joakim Milder - saxofon tenor

The fourth ECM album for the Wasilewski Trio adds a special guest, the lyrical Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder, whom the Poles came to know through performances with Tomasz Stanko’s Litania project. Amongst other affinities, the players share a love of Krzyzstof Komeda’s music, and Komeda’s “Sleep Safe and Warm” theme, written for Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby make a reappearance here.

As ever, the Wasilewski group balances original material – intensely melodic new tunes by Marcin (including two variations of the beautiful title track) – with a daring range of covers, embracing Herbie Hancock, the Police’s “Message In A Bottle” and Slawomir Kurkiewicz’s arrangement of a composition by Grazyna Bacewicz, and reinforces its status as one of the most resourceful groups around. This is the trio’s second ECM appearance this year, following on from sterling work as Jacob Young’s rhythm section on Forever Young. Spark of Life was recorded in Lugano in March 2014, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: January

2008
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

“January” is a strong musical statement from a still-young band with a long history already behind it, and an album with an exceptionally wide-ranging programme - all of it played with assurance, purpose and focus. The disc reconfirms that the trio of Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz is one of the most outstanding contemporary jazz groups.

Their friend and mentor trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has said, “In the entire history of Polish jazz we’ve never had a band like this one. They just keep getting better and better.” It was through Stanko’s ECM recording “Soul of Things”, recorded 2001, that the wider world first had a hint of the capacity of Wasilewski/Kurkiewicz/Miskiewicz. Since then, they’ve toured widely with Stanko and contributed mightily to his quartet recordings “Suspended Night”and “Lontano”, recorded in 2003 and 2005.

These three young Poles are known to ECM listeners worldwide for their sensitive playing in the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. In their homeland, however, they are also have a strong reputation as an autonomous group.

Their first international release shows why. With a wide-open repertoire that intersperses original material with interpretations of pieces by Björk, Wayne Shorter and Szymanowski, Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz bring something new to the piano trio tradition.

Krzysztof Komeda (1931-1969) wrote music for more than 40 films, including classics of the Polish cinema by Roman Polanski and Andrzej Wajda, and Polanski brought him to Hollywood to work on Rosemary's Baby. His soundtrack music, however, was only part of his achievement. Komeda almost singelehandedly instigated the modern jazz movement in Poland and made important contributions toward the shaping of a European aesthetic in jazz composition. Tomasz Stanko was Komeda's closest musical associate. At ECM's urging, Stanko returned to the archive to reinvestigate Komeda's work, rearranging both his intensely melodic film themes and his extended compositions for an all-star Scandinavian band.
