CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Nomad Songs

2015

Stephan Micus - Ndingo, Genbri, Steel-String Guitar, Suling, Voice, Nay, Rewab, Rabab, Twelve-String Guitar, Fourteen-String Guitar, Tin Whistle, Shakuhachi

German born Stephan Micus is quite simply one of the most intriguing musicians in music. The multi-instrumentalist has over the course of many decades, concocted his own dialect playing instruments from cultures he has studied across the world. Micus’ albums generally take a few years to create as he builds layer upon layer of instrumentation, crafting each album with a particular theme in mind […] Micus’ twenty first ECM album “Nomad Songs” reflects in some respects cultures that have been uprooted from their traditions, have lived in peace and harmony wandering the land and due to factors beyond their control have had to adapt and relinquish their lifestyles as nomads. He integrates these new instruments into a palette as a pan cultural stew that musically represents harmony from seemingly disparate elements. […] This world melange takes the listener to many established places and even imagined ones, from the mind of one of the most captivating musicians around. The listener is taken on their own nomadic journey, and no matter where it brings them, the depth will reveal something different each time. [ CJ Shearn, Blueceej.com ]

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Ocean

1986

Stephan Micus - Voice, Hammered Dulcimers, Nay, Sho, Shakuhachi, Bavarian Zithers

Ocean is a set of acoustic ambient performances from Stephan Micus. He uses exotic instruments and techniques that give this disc electronic timbre. He combines hammered dulcimers, sho, a shakuhachi, a ney, zithers, and vocals in a swirling sound design that absolutely shimmers. The natural sonorities of these devices create vast atmospheres with organic timbres. The soundscapes penetrate and enhance brainwave activity. This great CD will appeal to fans of Robert Rich, Klaus Wiese, and Riley Lee. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Desert Poems

2001

Stephan Micus - Sarangi, Dondon, Voice, Dilruba, Doussn' Gouni, Kalimba, Sinding, Steel Drum, Percussion, Shakuhachi, Nay, Sattar, Flowerpots

Micus expands his already broad musical horizons on Desert Poems, his 15th solo project, which he recorded between 1997 and 2000 in his studio on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca. Among the 'firsts' on Desert Poems are Micus's recorded debuts playing three African instruments - the doussn' gouni, (a West African harp), the kalimba (a Tanzanian thumb piano) and the dondon (a talking drum from Ghana); his singing in English (a haunting solo a cappella performance called 'Contessa Entellina' and on 'For Yuko', dedicated to his daughter) and an instrumental arrangement of 'Shen Khar Venakhi', a 13th century polyphonic choral piece from Georgia, which is the only work Micus did not compose to appear in his discography to date.

2004

Stephan Micus - Bagana, Tibetan Chimes, Kyeezee, Sho, Voice, Maung, Tin Whistle, Bavarian Zither, Thai Singing Bowl, Dilruba, Nay, Bagana, Tibetan Cymbals, Dondon, Bowed Bagana, Balinese Gongs, Burmese Gongs

Both a continuation and a departure from earlier work, “Life” sets to music an old Zen koan, or teaching story, on “the meaning of life”. Stephan Micus sings the text in Japanese and embodies the koan’s multi-layered meanings in his composition, scored for a characteristically wide range of ethnic/traditional instruments – from the Ethiopian bagana to the Irish tin whistle.

2013

Stephan Micus - Bavarian Zither, Tibetan Chimes, Burmese Temple Bells, Zanskari Horsebells, Chitrali Sitar, 14-String Guitar, Chinese Gongs, Dilruba, Sattar, Nay, Voice

Stephan Micus’ album takes six Byzantine Greek prayers and sets them in his own inimitable way with instruments he has collected in years of travels round the world. “The prayers are to the Virgin Mary,” says Micus, “but I also see this as a more universal work. It is not only Christian and dedicated to the Virgin Mary, but to the female energy that is everywhere in the world. The Chinese have this concept of yin and yang, and keeping the balance between them, which is very important to me. In our time, the male energy has become too overbearing, but in ancient times the gods were predominantly female. In the last 2000 years, the three monotheistic religions have over-emphasised the male aspect. I see this album as a small contribution to changing that status quo.”

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: On The Wing

2006

Stephan Micus - Satara, Guitar, Nay, Suling, Cymbals, Gong, Shakuhachi, Sitar

“On the Wing” is Stephan Micus’s first album without voice since 1990 and in contrast to “Life” (2004) in which he set to music a Japanese Zen Koan this album is not built around a “libretto”. Although the titles of the individual pieces convey the musician’s close affinity to nature they are associative rather than descriptive. Nevertheless, the album is conceived as an entity. “For me this is like a journey or a story: the start of a movement that is transformed in many ways and eventually comes to an end”, says Micus of his ten-part suite. The first four pieces, for example, prepare for the large ensemble of the fifth, “The Bride”, which takes a central position also due to its ceremonial character.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Athos - A Journey To The Holy Mountain

1994

Stephan Micus - Bavarian Zither, Sattar, Shakuhachi, Suling, Flowerpots, Nay, Voice

If true meditation is not a centering but a shedding of the self into a plane where the ego no longer speaks under the illusion of a proper name, then Stephan Micus has walked some of the most meditative paths on disc. Inspired by a visit to the holy Greek mountain of Athos, his album of the same name bears traces of just such a traveler, one whose artistry sees medium and message as one. Those looking for anything close to the Byzantine chant that surely nourished his ears during this pilgrimage may feel disappointed. Then again, the Micus experience has never been about total re-creation, but rather about the ways in which the lens of his soul refracts all it comes in contact with during its itinerancy.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Bold As Light

2010

Stephan Micus - Raj Nplaim, Bass Zither, Chord Zither, Bavarian Zither, Nohkan, Sho, Voice, Kalimba, Shakuhachi, Sinding

“The idea of sitting down at a table and making a composition on paper is totally foreign to me. To come up with a piece of music, I have to make the sound myself, have the instruments in my hands.”

Micus’ three main sound protagonists in “Bold As Light” are the raj nplaim (a free-reed pipe made of bamboo) from Laos, the nohkan (a bamboo flute) from Japan, and the many male voices, which, of course, are all sung by Micus himself. He drew inspiration for the multipart vocals from the intriguing polyphonic singing of Georgia and Bulgaria, which since the early Middle Ages has shaped the style of everyday singing as well as the liturgy of the Orthodox Church. On the very last track, the interwoven vocals make way for the Japanese shō (mouth organ), thus joining different aural worlds in a total sound whose divergent timbres have surprisingly much in common.

Gianluigi Trovesi, wild-haired Italian jazz clarinettist, creates a turbo-charged version of a traditional Italian town band to play a medley of quirkily arranged Italian opera tunes. It includes some of Rossini’s and Verdi’s greatest hits, garlanded with Trovesi’s husky solos, plus foot-tapping Baroque dances. It’s funny, sentimental and charming.

CD ECM Records Gianluigi Trovesi, Umberto Petrin, Fulvio Maras: Vaghissimo Ritratto

2007

Gianluigi Trovesi - clarinet alto
Umberto Petrin - pian
Fulvio Maras - percutie, electronice

Piatti is the unifying element of a project celebrating four centuries of western melody, but he is a wraith mostly out of earshot, his themes sometimes barely touched, sometimes explicit, within rolling jazzy dialogues or free-playing. The title track, framing Trovesi’s mellow tone within gurgly electronics and soft piano interjections, comes closest to contemporary jazz. … It’s the kind of quirkily virtuosic ECM venture that changes hues with successive listening. CD ECM Records Anat Fort Trio: And If

2007

Anat Fort - pian
Gary Wang - contrabas
Roland Schneider - tobe

Delicate, slow stuff, and pretty darn Keith Jarrett-y – especially the childlike, folky quality – but there’s something warm and luxuriant in Fort’s minimalist approach. “Minnesota” feels like watching the sky open to a dawn visity, each moment registered with wonder; her second take on “Paul Motian” caught the soft-petal poetry of that journeying drummer well. [ Paul de Barros, DownBeat ]

This is an intellectually satisfying yet emotionally charged CD, the sounds of which echo in the memory long after the disc has stopped spinning. [ Hrayr Attarian, All About Jazz ]

2016

Anat Fort - pian
Gary Wang - contrabas
Roland Schneider - tobe
Gianluigi Trovesi - clarinet alto

Listening to this album for the first time, I was slightly thrown by the alto clarinet. Not a familiar voice like the soprano or bass clarinet, hearing over the course of full album took a little time to fully appreciate the range and nuances of the instrument, and assimilate Trovesi's musical language and tone. Playing with a bitter sweet sound, the clarinettist will colour and manipulate his sound, interpreting the written score and reacting to the rhythm section as if he too were a regular fixture of the ensemble. […] Anat is not one to wear her heart on her sleeve, but that does not lessen the emotional content of her music. Close listening reveals a sharp mind at work with each idea presented without any excess baggage, just lean and lithe lines that make their meaning felt succinctly before moving on. […] A captivating set that reveals an original voice continuing to grow. It will be interesting to hear how the Anat Fort Trio continue their journey, and I for one would relish the prospect of a solo album from this gifted enthralling pianist. [ Nick Lea, Jazz Views ]

CD ECM Records Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson: Temporary Kings

2018

Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Ethan Iverson - pian

With Temporary Kings two of the most distinct voices on today’s jazz scene present their debut on record as a duo: Engaging in inspired dialogue Mark Turner and Ethan Iverson here explore aesthetic common ground in the atmosphere of a modernist chamber music-like setting at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano. The saxophonist and the pianist had begun their association in the Billy Hart Quartet, where the two players featured sympathetically on two ECM albums by that band. The new duo album now contains six originals by Iverson (among them the nostalgic solo tune “Yesterday’s Bouquet”) and two by Turner (including “Myron’s World,” which has acquired near-classic status among contemporary jazz players). There’s an off-kilter blues (“Unclaimed Freight”) and a strikingly melodic, almost Ravelian opening track dedicated to the town where the album was recorded under ideal sonic conditions (“Lugano”), plus an interpretation of Warne Marsh’s playfully serpentine “Dixie’s Dilemma.”

2010

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Gianluca Petrella - trombon
Giovanni Guidi - pian
Gabriele Evangelista - contrabas
Fabrizio Sferra - tobe
Giacomo Ancillotto - chitara

Voted Rising Star Trombonist in the Down Beat Critics Poll of 2005, he has a front-line relationship with Rava which recalls Enrico’s affinity with Roswell Rudd back in the heyday of the New Thing. Fast-moving, quick-witted exchanges abound. Enrico has always encouraged younger musicians, and pianist Giovanni Guidi (born 1985) is a real find, a player of creativity and imagination: “When I notice the gifts of a young musician, I immediately involve him in my groups. This is not motivated by altruism,” Rava insists. “Giovanni Guidi is like Bollani and Petrella: he astounds me every time.”

Enrico Rava - trompeta

+ PM Jazz Lab, Andrea Tofanelli, Claudio Corvini, Mauro Ottolini, Daniele Tittarelli, Dan Kinzelman, Franz Bazzani, Giovanni Guidi, Dario Deidda, Marcello Giannini, Zeno de Rossi, Ernesto Lopez Maturell

It was only after Michael Jackson’s death that Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava gradually became aware that he had for many years been ignoring, in his words, “one of the great protagonists of 20th century music and dance. A total artist. A perfectionist. A genius. I felt the need to delve more deeply into Michael’s world. There was only one way to do that: play his songs.” Thus this live album, recorded at the Rome Auditorium with the Parco della Musica Jazz Lab. Enrico’s trumpet is at its most extroverted here, vaulting above the spirited arrangements by Mauro Ottolini. Michael Jackson’s protean pop songs have never been heard quite like this. Rava is currently playing European festivals with this programme.

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava: New York Days

2008

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Stefano Bollani - pian
Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Larry Grenadier - contrabas
Paul Motian - tobe

In assessing Enrico Rava's lengthy career, while it is clear that he is still reaching for the unattainable, in recent years the Italian trumpeter's context has been considerably more centrist. Easy Living (ECM, 2004) and The Words and the Days (ECM, 2007) were undeniably mainstream, albeit with an unmistakable European and, at times, Mediterranean bent. New York Days teams Rava and pianist Stefano Bollani—last heard in duet on the marvelous The Third Man (ECM, 2008)—together with perennially underrated tenor saxophonist Mark Turner, increasingly ubiquitous bassist FLY and drum icon Paul Motian for a set of nine originals and two free improvisations that, like The Third Man combine innate lyricism and swing with some of Rava's freest playing in years. CD ECM Records Enrico Rava Quartet, Gianluca Petrella: Wild Dance

2015

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Gabriele Evangelista - contrabas
Enrico Morello - tobe
Gianluca Petrella - trombon

Enrico Rava, the great Italian jazz trumpeter, sifted through avant-swing, improv and experimental crossovers for years, then discovered Michael Jackson in his 70s, and devoted an utterly personal tribute album to him in the company of younger partners. ‘Wild Dance’ is similarly cross-generational, with an expanded Rava road band, fronted for the occasion by the leader’s trumpet paired with the trombone of Gianluca Petrella, a supple maestro of voicelike long tones, bebop intricacies and inbuilt swing. Rava’s Miles-inspired lyricism and tone control on slow music often takes centre stage in his work, but […] the blurted Ornette Coleman-like flurries of ‘Infant’ or ‘Happy Shades’, the guitar-driven swinger ‘Cornette’, or the soft bop ‘F Express’, over the excellent Enrico Morello’s bustling brushwork, represent effortlessly inventive uptempo jazz playing. 2005

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Stefano Bollani - pian
Paul Motian - tobe

A ballads album of remarkable musical range and depth, an intensely melodic disc, featuring the unorthodox line-up of trumpet, piano and drums.

Tati, in its inspiration and collective execution and continuity, is … very possibly Enrico Rava’s most indispensable recording. The mood is never broken, but evolves. After the Gershwin, everything is originals by members of the trio except a Puccini theme from Tosca, which seamlessly becomes one more fluid form in the spontaneous aesthetic. … Rava’s … ideas are impossible to anticipate as they move in melodic tangents and intuitive flares of energy. One of the most charismatic of jazz musicians, Enrico Rava has truly hit a purple patch in his career – he’s got a great band, he’s with the best label in the world and he’s making the finest music of a long, distinguished career. … This music will make you feel good about the world, maybe because it gives voice to all those values that however downtrodden won’t go away. I could tell you that this track is ballad, that one uptempo and this one has a Latin feel. But it deserves better than that. Simply, they should distil this, bottle it and serve it everywhere.
