CD ECM Records Harrison Birtwistle: Chamber Music

2014

Amy Freston - soprana
Roderick Williams - bariton
Lisa Batiashvili - vioara
Adrian Brendel - violoncel
Till Fellner - pian

Whatever the medium and the accretions of tradition you might expect a composer of Birtwistle’s independence of mind to react against - in composing a piano trio, for example – he finds something fresh to say and an accommodation for his intensely personal vision of the world. […] Roderick Williams is very fine in ‘Bogenstrich’ and the three instrumentalists, quite closely recorded, are in a class any composer would die for.

2018

Till Fellner - pian

Franz Liszt - Années de pèlerinage, Première année - Suisse
Ludwig van Beethoven - Sonata No. 32 in c minor op. 111

Speaking to the New York Times in 2007, Alfred Brendel said of fellow pianist Till Fellner: “It has impressed me how ambitiously he has developed his repertory, being equally at home in solo and concerto repertoire, chamber music and lieder… I heard him do the best live performance of Liszt’s Années de pèlerinage”. Fellner’s insightful playing of the Premiere année from that collection of suites, underlines the contention, vividly conveying Franz Liszt’s literal and imaginative journeys.

CD ECM Records Andrew Cyrille, Wadada Leo Smith, Bill Frisell: Lebroba

2018

Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Wadada Leo Smith - trompeta
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica

Andrew Cyrille’s title Lebroba is a contraction of Leland, Brooklyn and Baltimore, birthplaces of the protagonists of an album bringing together three of creative music’s independent thinkers.

A generous leader, Cyrille gives plenty of room to his cohorts, and all three musicians bring in compositions, with “Turiya”, Wadada’s elegant dedication to Alice Coltrane, unfurling slowly over its 17-minute duration. In his own pieces, including the title track and the closing “Pretty Beauty”, Cyrille rarely puts the focus on the drums, preferring to play melodically and interactively, sensitive to pitch and to space. There are references to West African music and the blues as well as the history of jazz drumming, but Cyrille’s priority today is an elliptical style in which meter is implied rather than stated.

CD ECM Records Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The Declaration Of Music Independence

2016

Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica
Richard Teitelbaum - pian, sintetizator
Ben Street - bas

A version of John Coltrane’s ‘Coltrane Time’ kicks things off with a snare pattern Cyrille learned from Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali – which he sustains while the others float rhythmically and arhythmically around him. Frisell’s melancholy ‘Kaddish’ rings quietly on over Cyrille’s far-distant mallets, Street’s ‘Say’ resembles a slow pop ballad, and ‘Dazzling (Perchordally Yours)’ is built around alternations of single chord-hits and silences, the players reacting to the resonances. It all swings without regular swing, sounding fluently melodic, though much of it is cell-like and episodic.

CD ECM Records Ben Monder, Pete Rende, Andrew Cyrille, Paul Motian: Amorphae

2016

Ben Monder - chitara electrica
Pete Rende - sintetizator
Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Paul Motian - tobe

Ben Monder may be the most listened to jazz guitarist at the moment, thanks to his being on David Bowie’s swansong, ‘Blackstar’. […] It’s clear here why Monder’s playing appealed to Bowie: he uses his electric guitar to create otherworldly, sometimes disturbing, soundscapes, some of which even have sci-fi titles such as ‘Gamma Crucis’ and ‘Triffids’. What melody there is serves as a basis for free improvisation, heavy on the reverb. It has the intensity of hard rock, yet the mood is ponderous, abstract and hazy. [ Chris Pearson, The Times ]

CD ECM Records Steve Swallow Quintet: Into The Woodwork

2012

Steve Swallow - bas
Chris Cheek - saxofon tenor
Steve Cardenas - chitara
Carla Bley - orga
Jorge Rossy - tobe

In the press sheet for Steve Swallow's Into the Woodwork, the award-winning electric bassist is quoted, saying: "Good humor before and after the red light goes on is very important. Music-making should be fun, after all." [...]

Into the Woodwork may lack the visuals, but it's clear that this quintet is having just as much fun, and is comfortable enough together to allow anything to happen—albeit within the structures of Swallow's writing. Other than life/music partner Carla Bley—focusing solely on organ and begging the question why she doesn't do so more often—this is a new constellation under the Swallow marquee, but guitarist Steve Cardenas and saxophonist Chris Cheek have intersected before, both with each other and with Swallow and Bley, in Paul Motian's Electric Bebop Band and Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra, respectively. CD ECM Records Steve Swallow: Damaged In Transit

2002

Steve Swallow - bas
Chris Potter - saxofon tenor
Adam Nussbaum - tobe

In November 2002, the Steve Swallow Trio, also known as Damaged In Transit, blazed its way across Europe in a three-week tour that reached peak performances at its climax in France. It is from these French dates that "Damaged In Transit", the album, is drawn. The stripped-down sax/bass/drums line-up gives all players room to move, and the context makes a particularly impressive showcase for Chris Potter, whose solos are supercharged by the interaction of bassist Swallow and drummer Adam Nussbaum.

CD ECM Records Steve Swallow: Real Book

1994

Steve Swallow - bas
Tom Harrell - trompeta, flugelhorn
Joe Lovano - saxofon tenor
Mulgrew Miller - pian
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

If Steve Swallow is known primarily as an ace session bassist, it's not because his compositions are less than top-notch. This program finds him showing off his considerable writing chops with the help of an all-star group: trumpeter Tom Harrell, saxophonist Joe Lovano, pianist Mulgrew Miller and drummer Jack DeJohnette. His focus on the upper registers and the polyester tone of his five-string bass guitar will continue to annoy those who prefer to hear the bass played dark, low and woody, but there's no denying the consistent inventiveness of his playing or the charm of these compositions. CD ECM Records Steve Swallow, Robert Creeley: So There

2006

Steve Swallow - bas
Robert Creeley - voce
Steve Kuhn - pian
Henrik Hannisdal - vioara
Odd Hannisdal - vioara
Marek Konstantynowicz - viola
Morten Hannisdal - violoncel

Poetry and jazz together can be treacherous territory, forcing narrators into a mannered mimicry of swing, but these short pieces strike an almost ideal balance between Creeley’s offhand, pragmatic pieces, Kuhn’s glossy postbop fluency and Swallow’s famously melodic, zither-like electric bass sound, with a string quartet sometimes adding dolorous mysteries. The jazz is straightahead, classy enough to hook the music’s regular audience; the strings writing is very sophisticated, and it all enhances the musicality of Creeley’s hypnotic narrative. Michael Mantler - dirijor

German-born composer/trumpeter Michael Mantler and his then-wife Carla Bley were instrumental in developing within jazz the idea of self-sufficiency and independence from established record companies. Their creation of the Jazz Composer's Orchestra, with recordings released on their own label, was the culmination of this endeavor, and the first recording was one of the masterpieces of creative music in the '60s. Mantler had come from the European avant-classical tradition and sought to provide an orchestral framework supporting some of the most advanced musicians in avant-garde jazz -- and he succeeded magnificently. His style tends toward the brooding and darkly romantic with harsh, cynical edges, a perfect foil for the robust, shackle-breaking improvisations found herein. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Dave Holland Quartet: Conference Of The Birds

1972

Dave Holland - contrabas
Sam Rivers - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, flaut
Anthony Braxton - instrumente de suflat cu ancie, flaut
Barry Altschul - percutie, marimba

An album of driving, progressive jazz it is also of historical significance as the only occasion when Sam Rivers and Anthony Braxton, two of the music’s most strikingly original saxophonists, recorded together. Inside Dave’s compositions they could meet – if briefly - and share ideas.

This summit meeting received raves from the press. “If you’ve found the new music lacking in swing, cohesion and variety, get to this album,” insisted Down Beat in a five star review. “It’s Holland’s date but each man contributes equally. The six Holland tunes offer great improvisational frameworks, and his bass playing, both arco and pizzicato, couldn’t be better… Don’t miss this one.”

CD ECM Records Chick Corea, Dave Holland, Barry Altschul: ARC

1971

Chick Corea - pian
Dave Holland - contrabas
Barry Altschul - percutie

This LP features pianist Chick Corea, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Barry Altschul during the brief period that, along with Anthony Braxton, they were members of the fine avant-garde quartet Circle. The music heard on this set is not quite as free as Circle's but often very explorative. Four of the six songs are Corea originals which, in addition to Holland's "Vedana" and Wayne Shorter's "Nefertiti," form a very viable set of adventurous jazz, recorded just a few months before Corea changed direction [ AllMusic ]

Angel Song represents the uniting of four exceptional improvisors with unique artistic identities. This two-disc set is a dazzling look at Kenny Wheeler's work as a composer. His breadth is stunning, from moody Oliver Nelson and Gil Evans-like expansiveness to compactly propulsive post-bop excursions. The first disc is taken up entirely with the eight-part "Sweet Time Suite."

Wheeler's scoring is bracing and emotive. Singer Norma Winstone is on hand for portions of it, offering a gloriously soaring counterpoint to the massed horn section. Wheeler's diverse background serves him well, as he's quite comfortable with both the traditional and the avant-garde (he worked in one of Anthony Braxton's important combos in the mid-'70s). For anyone unfamiliar with this stellar musician's work, this is is an excellent starting point, as is his first album as a leader, the remarkable GNU HIGH.

CD ECM Records Kenny Wheeler Quintet: The Widow In The Window

1990

Kenny Wheeler - Flugelhorn, trompete
John Abercrombie - chitara
John Taylor - pian
Dave Holland - contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe

Trumpeter Kenny Wheeler and his sidemen on this quintet CD (guitarist John Abercrombie, pianist John Taylor, bassist Dave Holland and drummer Peter Erskine) had all worked together previously in different settings. Their familiarity with each other's playing came in handy for the frequently intuitive session which consists of explorations of six of Wheeler's complex but often-melodic originals (including "The Widow in the Window," "Hotel Le Hot" and the lengthy "Ana"). Kenny Wheeler's music occupies its own unique area between post bop and free jazz and virtually all of his recordings are recommended to adventurous listeners, including this one. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, Paul Motian: Hamburg '72

By the time German radio captured this live set at NDR Funkhaus in 1972, Keith Jarrett had been playing with Charlie Haden and Paul Motian for six years. Their first recording together was on 1967's Life Between the Exit Signs, followed by El Juicio with Dewey Redman (from which two of the pieces here are drawn), and Mourning of a Star, both from 1971

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Eyes Of The Heart

1979
Keith Jarrett - pian, saxofon sopran
Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor, tamburina, maracas
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Paul Motian - tobe, percutie

This live recording features pianist Keith Jarrett (also playing a bit of soprano), tenor saxophonist Dewey Redman, bassist Charlie Haden and drummer Paul Motian performing the 33-minute title cut and an 18-minute piece simply called "Encore."

Every recording by this particular group (arguably Jarrett's best working ensemble) is well worth hearing, for they had their own sound and the ability to play both "inside" and "outside" simultaneously, and they were continually full of surprises. Originally released as a two-LP set with the fourth side completely blank, the intriguing music has since been reissued as a single CD. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Dewey Redman Quartet: The Struggle Continues

1982

Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor
Charles Eubanks - pian
Mark Helias - contrabas
Ed Blackwell - tobe

Dewey was showing the way with this supremely hip meeting between bop, blues and freedom. Veering between the joyously abstract bop of the opener to the wonderfully raunchy, low-down R&B of ‘Turn over Baby’, the self-taught Texan’s throaty, avant-blues gregariousness receives top notch support. Ed Blackwell’s buoyant rhythms are loose and pithy at the same time. Meanwhile, ex-Motown pianist Charles Eubanks is an intelligent, underrated player… Another underrated player, Mark Helias, was a key member of Blackwell’s group and combines superbly, contributing a series of dextrous solos too. … A welcome reissue. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: The Cure

1991

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

Sure, the Keith Jarrett Trio of the '80s and '90s recorded way too much music for the casual fan to absorb. But one's reservations fade when confronted with the sheer creativity and empathy that the trio displayed in this gorgeously recorded live date at New York's Town Hall. As in several albums before, the emphasis for Jarrett, Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette is on standards, save for a sole ostinato-based Jarrett original (the title track). [ AllMusic ]
