CD ECM Records Gary Peacock Trio: Now This

2015

Gary Peacock - contrabas
Marc Copland - pian
Joey Baron - tobe

In the realm of the piano trio the bar is set high, and creative bassist Gary Peacock has helped raise it in the groups of Bill Evans, Paul Bley and Keith Jarrett. Now This is an album with the bassist’s current trio, recorded last summer in Oslo. Powerful new versions of some Peacock classics – such as “Moor”, “Vignette”, “Requiem” and “Gaya” – are interspersed with recent compositions. Marc Copland and Joey Baron each contribute tunes, and the group also tackles Scott La Faro’s “Gloria’s Step”. In this band, roles are very evenly shared, and this is an optimum context in which to appreciate the melodic invention of Peacock’s bass playing. Marc Copland always honours the needs of the compositions and Joey Baron supplies both drive and sensitive detail. “Now This” is issued in time for Gary Peacock’s 80th birthday on May 12th.

CD ECM Records Carla Bley, Andy Sheppard, Steve Swallow: Trios

2013
Carla Bley - pian
Andy Sheppard - saxofoane
Steve Swallow - bas

‘Trios’ adheres to Bley’s vision in that the ideals frame the structures, offering opportunities for her ongtime collaborators, particularly tenor and soprano saxophonist Andy Sheppard, to shine. Bley’s plaing is beautifully evocative, and her interaction with bassist Steve swallow is effortless almost to the point of translucence. [...] The spiritual awareness that underlies much of Bley’s craft is always at hand as the trio explores these strange, haunting melodies with quiet awe. [ John Swenson, Stereophile ]

CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad: Sunrise - A cantata on texts by Edvard Munch

2012

Kari Bremnes - voce
Aage Kvalbein - violoncel
Matias Bjornstad - saxofon alto
Bjorn Kjellemyr - contrabas
Hans-Kristian Kjos Sorensen - percutie
Oslo Chamber Choir ( dirijor Egil Fossum )

"For a country with such a small population, Norway has much to be proud of when it comes to the arts...and not just music, though it remains a country whose support has certainly resulted in a disproportionate number of creative musicians across the broadest musical spectrum. Looking at the violin and its variants alone, there is the traditional Hardanger fiddle work of Nils Okland, already known to fans of the ECM label for albums including Lysoen: Hommage a Ole Bull (2011), his subtle and sublime duo recording with pianist/harmonium player Sigbjorn Apeland; the more decidedly classical leanings of violinist Bjarte Eike, a member of keyboardist Jon Balke's Magnetic North Orchestra, most recently heard on Diverted Travels (ECM, 2004), and whose own The Image of Melancholy (BIS, 2014) is an overlooked gem; or the more pedal-to-the-metal work of violinist Ola Kvernberg in the recent debut of Grand General (Rune Grammofon, 2013).

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner / John Abercrombie: Five Years Later

1981

Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six
John Abercrombie - chitara acustica, , electrica, mandolina electrica

John Abercrombie is unique among guitarists in that whenever he becomes enraptured his sound becomes neither louder nor more pronounced but becomes somehow mysterious, liberated. Ralph Towner, on the other hand, revels in the crackling ruptures that so characterize his playing. Yet these roles seem reversed in this follow-up to the duo’s Sargasso Sea. A far more fragile carnation than its predecessor, it seems to forego the usual bag of tricks in favor of something more, as the album’s title would imply, reflective. This is especially apparent in the three improvisations with which the set list is dotted, and nowhere more so than in “Late Night Passenger,” where Abercrombie’s laddered filaments provide stunning berth for the other’s muted, jangling starlight. CD ECM Records John Abercrombie / Dave Holland / Jack DeJohnette: Gateway - Homecoming

1995
Gateway:
John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Dave Holland - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe, pian

The title track reunited more than one of the finest groups of the seventies, bringing together also the many emotional souvenirs each performer had gathered along the way. The joy in every lick and tumble is in full evidence.

DeJohnette is aflame, Abercrombie following his trail of embers with laser precision and shaving off an twist of lime for his solo, while Holland (who penned this and three other of the album’s nine tunes) is at his buoyant best. His montuno-flavored “Modern Times” and “How’s Never” throw open the doors for both of his bandmates, but especially for DeJohnette in the latter. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie / Ralph Towner: Sargasso Sea

1976

John Abercrombie - chitara acustica si electrica
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six, pian

Given the contrasting but strikingly compatible talents of John Abercrombie and Ralph Towner, this album was bound to happen sooner or later. The aptly titled “Fable” best describes what these two musicians achieve together, for theirs is a tale that sounds as if it were written long ago, coalescing out of life’s improvisations into a memorable narrative. Its pairing of Towner’s 12-string with Abercrombie’s electric represents the duo in its most melodically satisfying comfort zone. We get more of the same in the title track, an uncertain travail with hints of soliloquies caressing our ears from either side, and in the relatively explosive moments of “Elbow Room.” [ ecmreviews ]

Martie 1975

John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Dave Holland - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

"With this record, John Abercrombie both repaved and detoured from his staid path. He could hardly have been in finer company, and the combination seems to have fanned all sorts of flames within him. DeJohnette and Holland string an array of tightropes across which Abercrombie balances his way into previously uncharted territory. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie Quartet: 39 Steps

aprilie 2013

John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Marc Copland - pian
Drew Gress - contrabas
Joey Baron - tobe

John Abercrombie’s revised quartet provides Marc Copland with his first appearance on ECM. Yet guitarist and pianist are old allies, with an association stretching back forty years. In the early 1970s both were members of Chico Hamilton’s quartet, and at the dawn of fusion both played with pioneering jazz-rock band Dreams. Since the late 1990s they’ve revived their partnership in diverse context and have toured in formations ranging from piano-guitar duo to trio with Kenny Wheeler to the cooperative group Contact with Dave Liebman and Billy Hart.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: The Third Quartet

iunie 2006

John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Mark Feldman - vioara
Marc Johnson - contrabas
Joey Baron - tobe

Through the set the alternations of country roughness and European fastidiousness in Feldman, Baron’s and Johnson’s empathy, and Abercrombie’s glistening guitar sound, serve as reminders of what a richly resourceful group this goes on being.
John Fordham, The Guardian

There’s something very special about this latest disc from John Abercrombie’s quartet, but the whole thing’s so understated that it’s hard to put your finger on quite what it is. …

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: Timeless

1974
John Abercrombie - chitara
Jan Hammer - orga, sintetizatoare, pian
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

This evergreen stands tall in the ECM forest. There is no sense of competition, only mutual reveling in a distinctly nuclear sound. One could easily call it fusion, but if anything it is fused with itself, for it has created every element it seeks to combine. Timeless indeed.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: The First Quartet (3 CD-Box)

1978-1980
John Abercrombie - chitara
Richie Beirach - pian
George Mraz - contrabas
Peter Donald - tobe
John Abercrombie a avut o colaborare interesanta cu pianistul Richie Beirach , o muzica mai putin jazz-rock ( Gateway ), mai mult meditativa, chiar pastorala. Beirach mai are trei albume , dintre care cel mai interesant este Eon

Setul prezinta albumele Arcade, Abercrombie Quartet si M intr-o varianta remasterizata. Aceste albume nu au mai fost editate pe CD pana acum.

The quartet with Richie Beirach, George Mraz and Peter Donald – John Abercrombie’s first touring band as a leader – was the group in which the guitarist defined some priorities, moving away from a jazz-rock period into a more spacious, impressionistic and original music. Abercrombie and pianist Beirach had a strong musical rapport as improvisers and wrote almost all of the band’s book between them.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: Up And Coming

2017
John Abercrombie - chitara
Marc Copland - pian
Drew Gress - contrabas
Joey Baron - tobe

Guitarist John Abercrombie – who has recorded as a leader for ECM since 1974 – returns with a second album by his quartet featuring Marc Copland on piano, along with longtime rhythm partners Drew Gress and Joey Baron. Extolling 39 Steps, the group’s 2013 album, the Financial Times said: “The emphasis is on subtle intrigue, flowing lyricism and the interplay between the leader’s warm, cleanly articulated guitar and Copland’s piano… with bassist Gress and drummer Baron equally supple and sinewy companions.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: November

1993
John Abercrombie - chitara
Marc Johnson- contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet

"Named for both the month its was recorded in and for the mood it maintains, November is a cogent record from guitarist John Abercrombie’s trio with bassist Marc Johnson and drummer Peter Erskine, along with special guest John Surman. The English reedman lends his fluid considerations to the album’s deepest moments, and nowhere so engagingly as in “The Cat’s Back,” thus opening a cloudy and sometimes pensive set of mostly group originals. Abercrombie’s quiet sparkle ushers in the gravid quartet sound of this improvised prelude, Surman tipping the scales with bass clarinet against the weight of Erskine and Johnson’s joyous communication.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Private City

1987

John Surman - clarinet bas, saxofon bariton si sopran, sintetizatoare

If the title of Private City comes about as close as one can get to describing the sound-world of John Surman, then that of its first piece, “Portrait Of A Romantic,” does the same for the man behind it. Its quivering recorder blankets us in warmth, fully realized by an electric piano and bubbling as the waters in a forgotten loch. A bass clarinet swims, a creature of myth remembering a time when its kind were plentiful.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem, John Surman, Dave Holland: Thimar

1998
Anouar Brahem - oud
John Surman - saxofon sopran, bas clarinet
Dave Holland - contrabas

A strikingly attractive 'transcultural' project initiated by Tunisian oud virtuoso Anouar Brahem, who is both an innovator and a traditionalist in the deepest sense (he has been credited with 'restoring the sovereignty of the oud' in Tunisian music). There is no glib fusion of traditions on Thimar but rather a coming together of three very distinctive musicians who sacrifice none of their individuality in the search for common ground.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Invisible Threads

2018
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet
Nelson Ayres - pian
Rob Waring - vibrafon, marimba

John Surman met pianist Nelson Ayres – known to aficionados of Brazilian jazz for his work with Airto Moreira, Milton Nascimento and Banda Pau Brasil – while on tour in South America. In Oslo, Surman came to know and appreciate the playing of Rob Waring, expatriate US vibraphonist (recently heard on ECM with Mats Eilertsen). The three musicians come together to play a new programme of Surman originals – plus Nelson Ayres’s “Summer Song” – in a session recorded at Oslo’s Rainbow studio in July 2017, produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Road To Saint Ives

1990
John Surman - saxofoane, bas clarinet, claviaturi, percutie

Although we might feel tempted to take Road To Saint Ives, one of John Surman’s most stunning solo albums to date, as a portrait of its titular coastal town, Surman states in his liner notes that such is not the case. Aside from the peppering of folk-inspired melodies in the soprano solos, the music breaks its own ground on the way toward unique improvisatory continents.

CD ECM Records John Surman: Saltash Bells

2012
John Surman - saxofoane, clarinet, bas clarinet, sintetizatoare

John Surman is an exceptionally versatile musician and his instrumental prowess has been showcased in many contexts. Yet his solo albums may be the best sources for insights into his melodic imagination. If you want to understand the wellsprings of his creativity, the solo albums are the place to go; “Saltash Bells” ranks with the best of them.
