CD ECM Records Hilliard Ensemble - Tallis, Tye, Sheppard: Audivi Vocem

2008

David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Steven Harrold - tenor
Gordon Jones - bariton
Robert Macdonald - bas

The Hilliards here return to familiar territory with a programme of Tallis, Tye and Sheppard. While the territory may be familiar, however, not all of its landmarks are, and neither is their disposition – this is an extremely well organised disc. …
The music by Tye includes ‘Omnes gentes plaudite’, which may perhaps be considered relatively known, but the four sections of the ‘Missa sine nomine’ from the Peterhouse part-books will, I suspect, be unknown even to most connoisseurs of this period, precisely on account of the missing voice. I trust that these beautifully blended performances will help to change this state of affairs, for it is an extremely impressive work, heralding the new, compact and more declamatory style with consummate skill. An outstanding release. [ Ivan Moody, Gramophone ]

Alfred Schnittke: Symphony No. 9
Alexander Raskatov: Nunc Dimittis - In Memoriam Alfred Schnittke

Composed shortly before his death in 1998, Schnittke’s ultimate symphony – actually his very last work – is a “Ninth” in a most unusual sense: Put down with a shaky left hand by an artist who had survived four strokes and was laterally debilitated, it is an impressive triumph of spiritual energy over physical constraints. The composer’s widow Irina treated the barely-legible manuscript as a testament and was long doubtful whom to entrust with the difficult task of deciphering and reconstructing the highly expressive three movements for large orchestra (some 38 minutes of music). She finally settled on Moscow-born Alexander Raskatov, who not only provided a thorough score but, convinced that Schnittke had intended to write a fourth movement, also developed the idea to add an independent epilogue, the “Nunc Dimitis” (“Lord, let thy servant now depart into thy promis'd rest”) for mezzo soprano, vocal quartett and orchestra. It is based on the famous text by orthodox monk Starets Siluan and on verses by Joseph Brodsky, Schnittke’s favourite poet.

David James Countertenor
David Gould Countertenor

Steven Harrold Tenor
Gordon Jones Baritone

An aristocrat who forged an idiosyncratic style of musical expression, Don Carlo Gesualdo, Prince of Venosa, was one of those composers in music history who can truly be described as being ahead of his time: the creator of a harmonic language bold almost to the point of anarchy, whose every unpredictable interval was viewed with suspicion by the opponents of musical autonomy and guardians of liturgically based sacred music. ... The Hilliard Ensemble’s expressive singing, here also featuring soprano Monika Mauch and countertenor David Gould, conjures up that sound described by the great music historian Hans Redlich as growing out of “the antithesis between extravagant/debauched eroticism and self-castigating longing for death”.

The Hilliard Ensemble :

Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor

Nothing sums up the bold apparoach to repertoire better than this CD which mixes Italian Renaissance madrigals with Roger Marsh’s 2008 vocal work ‘Il Cor Tristo’ – setting parts of Dante’s ‘Inferno’ to austere chanted chords from which single voices break out. Grim words; haunting music; masterly performance. [ Richard Morrsison, The Times ]

CD ECM Records Tigran Hamasyan: Luis I Luso

2015

Tigran Hamasyan Piano, Prepared Piano
Yerevan State Choir
Harutyun Topikyan Conductor

Arranged by Hamasyan, the pieces date from the 5th to the 20th centuries and are sung by a 23-strong choir in an earthily passionate liturgical style. The role of the piano is vital: sometimes introducing a theme, sometimes improvising around it, Hamasyan uses the characteristic, Eastern-hued Armenian modes to summon up an ancient world. It’s very different to Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble’s million-selling ‘Officium’, but if you liked that, you’ll love this. [ Phil Johnson, Independent On Sunday ]

CD ECM Records Anna Gourari - Prokofiev, Medtner, Chopin: Visions fugitives

2013

Sergey Prokofiev - Visions Fugitives Op. 22
Nikolay Medtner - Fairy Tale In F Minor Op. 26/3
Frederic Chopin - Sonata No. 3 In B Minor Op. 58

Anna Gourari - pian

Gourari triumphs on this program. She handles difficult technical parts with a speech-like continuity that flows the music wonderfully well. The Prokofiev has all the mystery and movement we could ask for. She understands his at times eccentric evocative moods and gives us a reading that glows with freshness. The Chopin has a weighted depth of feeling that neither under nor overplays the sentiments so nobly and fully, pianistically expressed. In every way Anna Gourari brings us her brilliant interpretive skills. The Prokofiev sings, the Chopin reverberates. A beautiful recital! CD ECM Records Anna Gourari - Bach, Hindemith, Gubaidulina: Canto Oscuro

Mai 2011 - Compozitori: Bach, Paul Hindemith, Sofia Gubaidulina

Anna Gourari - pian

When she won the 1994 Düsseldorf Shumann Competition she was thought to show ‘an almost mystical quality’ while the critic Harold Schonberg found her playing ‘free but never eccentric’. Much of this programme is contemplative but she’s nonetheless a powerful player in the counterbalancing Chaconnes: the inevitable Bach/Busoni and a dissonant one by Sofia Gubaidulina (very compelling). [...] The piano recording has real presence. [ Christopher Breunig, Hi-Fi News ]

CD ECM Records Hilliard Ensemble - Thomas Tallis: The Lamentations Of Jeremiah

1987

The Hilliard Ensemble :

David James - contratenor
John Potter - tenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Paul Hillier - barition
Michael George - bas

The Hilliard Ensemble have Tallis's Lamentations in their blood, and they have a precise feeling for the place of every gesture in the broader form. The earlier sections are restrained, with the passion mounting only gradually towards the final paragraphs 20 minutes later. This is fluid, carefully modulated, limpid singing of considerable control and an astonishing clarity (particularly considering that they read the music as at modern concert pitch, resulting in some extremely low textures).
But the true novelty here—for there are several other fine recordings of the Lamentations—is the four-voice Mass, which is surely Tallis's least obviously impressive work. Much of it is in simple four-part chords with hardly any imitation or variety of texture; so it presents something of a challenge which the Hilliards accept with infectious enthusiasm. CD ECM Records Konstantia Gourzi: Music For Piano And String Quartet

Iulie 2011

Lorenda Ramou, Heather Cottrell, Susanna Pietsch, Klaus-Peter Werani, Hanno Simons

Athens-born and Munich-based composer Konstantia Gourzi makes her ECM New Series label debut. “What historical voices commingle in the current idiom of a composer whose cultural roots lie in the birthplace of rhetoric, but who emigrated to take a musical apprenticeship in European constructivism?” asks Ingrid Allwardt in the liner notes. “What wordless airs, echoes of past ages, thread their way into the present day of her instrumental songs?” Music for piano and string quartet, supplies the answers. With the exception of the early „noch fürcht’ ich”, composed in 1993, all the music is of recent vintage. It includes a number of piano miniatures, pieces dedicated to Lachenmann, Kurtág, Raue, Abbado, Barenboim and Rexroth, two string quartets, and works for string quartet and piano. Pianist Lorenda Ramou and the Ensemble Coriolis deliver committed performances.

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Alina

1995
Vladimir Spivakov - vioara
Sergev Bezrodny - pian
Alexander Malter - pian
Dietmar Schwalke - violoncel

The problem here, if you can call it a problem, is a marked lack of musical 'activity'. Arvo Part eschews the bustle and restlessness of 'reality' in favour of space and relative quietness, and his music reflects that preference. Fur Alina is not minimalism in the sense of 'hypnotic repetition', but 50 minutes or so spent attending to a few simple but beautiful ideas. And who could argue with that? If complexity and busyness can be seen as valid musical options, then why not extreme simplicity?
What we have here is deceptively uncomplicated. Spiegel im Spiegel 'plays' with phrases that grow successively longer and hangs suspended in a major key. The shifts in emphasis and symmetry are subtle, but cumulatively telling. There are three versions of the piece, two for violin and piano and one for cello and piano, and all of them work well. "Listening to Arvo Pärt's newest composition, Litany, is like walking alone in a vast, empty space. A deserted monastery, perhaps. History and stillness hang thick as incense in the air. Light from arched windows patterns the floor. Columns soar heavenward. These images are all in the imagination. But such is the power of Pärt's religious music that it inevitably sends listeners on an inward journey back in time." [ David Stabler, The Oregonia ]

Pärt continues his sacred investigations with homegrown choir and orchestra
"His music fulfills a deep human need that has nothing to do with fashion," Steve Reich once said of his contemporary Arvo Pärt, Estonia's preeminent modern composer. Pärt’s earlier works were in a neo-classical mold; his later ones imbued minimalism with religious fervor. In Principio, which includes four new pieces and several revised older pieces, naturally falls in the latter camp. Pärt’s gaze penetrates the crease between earth and the heavens: Five compositions are settings of the book of John for chorus and orchestra; one is a requiem for late Estonian president Lennart Georg Meri, and one is for the victims of the 2004 Madrid train bombings. The “John” pieces are dominated by celestial voices and string-heavy musical accompaniment that moves fluently between ecstatic fanfare and vanishing solemnity. “Da Pacem Domine” is a standout—its voices flowing in undisturbed serenity—as is the sharply contrasting “La Sindone,” where trickling rivulets of strings periodically tumble into waterfall chords. All four of Arvo Pärt’s symphonies, newly recorded with the NFM Wrocław Philharmonic under the direction his musical accomplice, Tõnu Kaljuste. Each of the symphonies, as the great Estonian composer has noted, is a world unto itself. Heard in chronological order they also tell us much about Pärt’s musical and spiritual journey, and the very different ways in which he has exercised his craft.

'Lamentate' is a lament not for the dead but the living, struggling with the pain and hopelessness of the world. After a subterranean rumble, a sorrowful fanfare makes way for an ascent of the solo piano keyboard, and a shuddering orchestral climax that sets the tolling of alarm bells against a Mahlerian funeral march. After the work that precedes it (the Hilliard Ensemble's performance of 'Da pacem Domine', a gently rocking prayer for peace) the effect is doubly shattering. Impressive performances, a seductive ECM recording, and works that no-one with an interest in contemporary art and music can afford to miss. [BBC Music ]

Some outstanding and thought-provoking works here, then, the quality of which outweigh the rather miserly playing time (especially at full price). The performances could hardly be better; Tönu Kaljuste is a long-time friend and interpreter of Pärt’s music (he was responsible for one of the composer’s best earlier releases on Virgin, Beatus vir). He coaxes playing of great warmth and intensity from his forces, and producer Manfred Eicher and his team serve them well with a recording of demonstration quality. Whether you’re interested in this composer’s particular style or not, this is well worth investigating. [MusicWeb International ]

2012

Tui Hirv - soprana
Rainer Vilu - bariton
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Tallinn Chamber Orchestra
Tonu Kaljuste - dirijor

The Adam in Arvo Pärt's Lament (2010) is the one who was cast out of paradise. For the composer he represents "humankind in its entirety and each individual person alike, irrespective of time, epochs, social strata and confession". The text, by Silouan, a monk on Mount Athos, emphasises Adam's pain and grief at his banishment. The mix of Orthodox-style chant, ethereal string writing and block-like vocal writing amalgamates Pärt's most familiar styles, but the whole has more contrast and colour than usual. In this world premiere recording, the Latvian Radio Choir, Vox Clamantis and Sinfonietta Riga perform with admirable commitment. The disc includes shorter choral works such as Alleluia-Tropus, Estonian Lullaby and Christmas Lullaby. [ The Guardian ]

Pärt's 1987 release, Arbos, shows the composer working within his medium, bringing forth a body of music sacred in sound and message and presenting new compositional techniques. Utilizing a limited palette of tones, arranged in repeating patterns, these works are often (understandably) categorized with the works of Glass, Reich, and Riley. The tonal palette is often borrowed from European medieval styles, and this, in conjunction with the liturgical subject matter, make these new compositions feel centuries old. His Pari Intervello, originally scored in 1978 for wind instruments, is here recorded for solo organ. One of his more famous pieces, Stabat Mater, is presented here -- an airy piece that floats just on the threshold of awareness. Scored for vocal trio and string trio, this is a simply beautiful piece -- very expressive and lilting. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Te Deum

1993
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir

The Te Deum is a statement on statement, a quantification of the utterance via the merest particle of its articulation. In reading so humbly into his sources, Pärt has rendered inspiration palatable through his own sense of hymnal adoration. One is hard-pressed to reconstruct the Te Deum for those who have yet to peer through its many windows. And though no review, however voluminous, does it a modicum of justice, I can only hope these words at least begin to express its potential effect. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: The Deer's Cry

2016
ansamblul Vox Clamantis - dirijor Jaan-Eik Tulve

The second ECM New Series album to fully showcase pure-toned Estonian vocal group Vox Clamantis and its artistic director/conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve is devoted to compositions by their great countryman, Arvo Pärt – whose music has been the most performed globally of any living composer over the past five years.

This album – titled The Deer’s Cry after its first track, an incantatory work for a cappella mixed choir – is also the latest in an illustrious line of ECM New Series releases to feature Pärt’s compositions, the very music that inspired Manfred Eicher to establish the New Series imprint in 1984. Along with such classic works as Da pacem Domine the new album includes first-time recordings of the a cappella pieces Drei Hirtenkinder aus Fátima and Habitare Fratres.
