CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Symphony No. 4

2010
Los Angeles Philharmonic, dirijor: Esa-Pekka Salonen
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir, dirijor: Tonu Kaljuste

Premiere recordings of Arvo Pärt’s music belong on ECM New Series. This recording of the 4th Symphony – Pärt’s first symphonic work in more than 30 years - documents also the premiere concert performance at L.A.’s Walt Disney Concert Hall.

Before Pärt started work on the composition, his thoughts had been circling around texts related to guardian angels. Then he received the commission from Los Angeles, a city whose very name means 'the angels'. His decision to make the Canon of the Guardian Angel the foundation of the new piece was a foregone conclusion.

The 4th Symphony is augmented on disc by a new montage of “fragments” of Kanon Pokajanen, a piece which Pärt feels is closely related to the symphony. “To my mind, the two works belong together and form a stylistic unity.'

Saulius Sondeckis - dirijor

"Listening to Arvo Pärt's newest composition, Litany, is like walking alone in a vast, empty space. A deserted monastery, perhaps. History and stillness hang thick as incense in the air. Light from arched windows patterns the floor. Columns soar heavenward. These images are all in the imagination. But such is the power of Pärt's religious music that it inevitably sends listeners on an inward journey back in time." [ David Stabler, The Oregonia ]

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Lamentate

2005
Alexei Lubimov - pian
The Hilliard Ensemble :
Sarah Leonard - soprana
David James - contratenor
Rogers Covey-Crump - tenor
Stephen Harrold - tenor
Gordon Jones - baritone
SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra
Andrey Boreyko - dirijor

'Lamentate' is a lament not for the dead but the living, struggling with the pain and hopelessness of the world. After a subterranean rumble, a sorrowful fanfare makes way for an ascent of the solo piano keyboard, and a shuddering orchestral climax that sets the tolling of alarm bells against a Mahlerian funeral march. After the work that precedes it (the Hilliard Ensemble's performance of 'Da pacem Domine', a gently rocking prayer for peace) the effect is doubly shattering. Impressive performances, a seductive ECM recording, and works that no-one with an interest in contemporary art and music can afford to miss. [BBC Music ]

Helena Olsson - soprana

Tonu Kaljuste - dirijor

Some outstanding and thought-provoking works here, then, the quality of which outweigh the rather miserly playing time (especially at full price). The performances could hardly be better; Tönu Kaljuste is a long-time friend and interpreter of Pärt’s music (he was responsible for one of the composer’s best earlier releases on Virgin, Beatus vir). He coaxes playing of great warmth and intensity from his forces, and producer Manfred Eicher and his team serve them well with a recording of demonstration quality. Whether you’re interested in this composer’s particular style or not, this is well worth investigating. [MusicWeb International ]

2012
Latvian Radio Choir

Sinfonietta Riga
Tui Hirv - soprana
Rainer Vilu - bariton
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Tallinn Chamber Orchestra
Tonu Kaljuste - dirijor

The Adam in Arvo Pärt's Lament (2010) is the one who was cast out of paradise. For the composer he represents "humankind in its entirety and each individual person alike, irrespective of time, epochs, social strata and confession". The text, by Silouan, a monk on Mount Athos, emphasises Adam's pain and grief at his banishment. The mix of Orthodox-style chant, ethereal string writing and block-like vocal writing amalgamates Pärt's most familiar styles, but the whole has more contrast and colour than usual. In this world premiere recording, the Latvian Radio Choir, Vox Clamantis and Sinfonietta Riga perform with admirable commitment. The disc includes shorter choral works such as Alleluia-Tropus, Estonian Lullaby and Christmas Lullaby. [ The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: Te Deum

1993
Estonian Philharmonic Chamber Choir
Tallinn Chamber Orchestra
Tonu Kaljuste - dirijor

The Te Deum is a statement on statement, a quantification of the utterance via the merest particle of its articulation. In reading so humbly into his sources, Pärt has rendered inspiration palatable through his own sense of hymnal adoration. One is hard-pressed to reconstruct the Te Deum for those who have yet to peer through its many windows. And though no review, however voluminous, does it a modicum of justice, I can only hope these words at least begin to express its potential effect. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Arvo Part: The Deer's Cry

2016
ansamblul Vox Clamantis - dirijor Jaan-Eik Tulve

The second ECM New Series album to fully showcase pure-toned Estonian vocal group Vox Clamantis and its artistic director/conductor Jaan-Eik Tulve is devoted to compositions by their great countryman, Arvo Pärt – whose music has been the most performed globally of any living composer over the past five years.

This album – titled The Deer’s Cry after its first track, an incantatory work for a cappella mixed choir – is also the latest in an illustrious line of ECM New Series releases to feature Pärt’s compositions, the very music that inspired Manfred Eicher to establish the New Series imprint in 1984. Along with such classic works as Da pacem Domine the new album includes first-time recordings of the a cappella pieces Drei Hirtenkinder aus Fátima and Habitare Fratres.

Terje Rypdal chitara electrica

"I start this review where I might end it, by marking If Mountains Could Sing as one of Terje Rypdal’s finest achievements. Marrying the Norwegian guitarist’s penchant for magnesium fire with his comparable passion for classical textures, this record gives us the clearest intersection of his split idiomatic personality since Descendre." What Rypdal has done is composed a jazz set that pays tribute to that classic Miles album, yet sounds fresh and new, which is not an easy feat. … What this music does accomplish in to recreate the way Miles’s band would establish a pulse – not just a beat, not just a rhythm, but a living pulse – and build everything up from that. … If you were ever a fan of Bitches Brew, you really must audition Vossabrygg. … An amazing, intoxicating, and satisfying brew it is. CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal: Odyssey (3 CD-Box)

1975-1976
Setul contine reeditarea albumului Odyssey in varianta completa precum si o inregistrare in concert (care nu a mai fost publicata anterior)

Odyssey:
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica, sintetizatoare, saxofon sopran
Torbjorn Sunde - trombon
Brynjulf Blix - orga
Sveinung Hovensjo - bas
Svein Christiansen - tobe

The electric guitar innovator in the 1970s. This box set in ECM’s Old & New Masters Series collects Terje Rypdal’s two-LP Odyssey album – heard on CD, for the first time, in its entirety, including the much-requested and epically-rocking “Rolling Stone” – and “Unfinished Highballs”, a recently unearthed 1976 radio recording that documents the Norwegian guitarist’s work for his Odyssey quartet and the Swedish Radio Jazz Group. The complete Odyssey may address a longstanding demand, but “Unfinished Highballs” will surprise even Rypdal’s most committed fans. It reveals that not only were many of the markers which would come to define his career already in place, but the intrepid guitarist was already searching for ways to include, rather than exclude, in his approach to composition and performance.

1977

Terje Rypdal - electric guitar, keyboard, synthesizer
Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, fluegelhorn, RMI, tac piano, ring modulator
Sveinung Hovensjo - basses
Jon Christensen - drums, percussion

Terje Rypdal’s Waves (recorded 1977) announced the beginning of the Norwegian guitarist’s association with Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, which continues to this day. The album also introduced one of Terje’s most enduringly popular pieces, “Per Ulv.” “Rypdal’s album is a series of sonic excursions ranging from the expressionist to the impressionist…” wrote Record World. “Rypdal’s guitar and Mikkelborg’s trumpet are well-matched, with Manfred Eicher’s typically superb production putting it all in focus.”

CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal: Q.E.D.

1993

Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Borealis Ensemble , dirijor Christian Eggen

Terje Rypdal :
- Q.E.D. ( Quot Erat Demonstrandum) Op. 52
- Largo Op. 55

Largo seems to me a better work than Q. E. D. because it explores a single, interesting idea, and sustains a 16-minute structure without monotony or strain. It is slow moving and uniform in texture, but the gradual harmonic shifts preserve an effective and engaging level of tension. Nor is there anything simplistic about the unsparing ending. Q. E. D., with four short movements followed by an 18-minute finale, is less well-proportioned, much more diverse, and also less coherent, as if the balance between what is to be played from score and what is to be improvised remained to be worked out on the basis of the experiments which this performance represents. Even in Q. E. D., however, Rypdal is never banal, and never solemn. The recordings are over-bright, the instruments too closely-miked, but the disc celebrates a distinctive talent.' [ Gramophone ]

1995
John Surman - saxofoane, clarinet, bas clarinet

Nordic Quartet bonds an unconventional roster of musicians and conceptual approaches. John Surman reaches into his usual toolkit, favoring the lower range, while vocalist Karin Krog sews her Sheila Jordan-like vibrato into Terje Rypdal’s electric swoons and pianist Vigleik Storaas’s intimate embraces. CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian: Hindemith Sonatas

1986

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Simply overflowing with musical brilliance, it remains one of the finest examples of what the viola is capable of. Kim Kashkashian’s technique and passion are almost palpable and one can only marvel at the humble respect she brings to both. The viola doesn’t simply exist somewhere between violin and cello, forever doomed to be second rate to both. It is, rather, an utterly dynamic and rich musical object, and the ways in which Hindemith unravels its subtler intonations in these sonatas is nothing short of monumental. Every chapter tells us something new, until the linguistic possibilities of the music represented in this eclectic set are exhausted. [ ecmreviews ]

Madhares ( String Qartet No. 3 )

Larcher is an unpredictable, freethinking composer, who has set aside the modernist strictures that have long governed Central European music. … “Böse Zellen” is riveting from start to finish – a sweat-inducing drama in instrumental form. All the works receive immaculate, strongly felt performances. [ Alex Ross, The New Yorker ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Asturiana - Songs From Spain And Argentina

2007

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Manuel De Falla, Enrique Granados, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Lopez Buchardo

No higher compliment could be paid to Kashkashian’s playing of Spanish songs – art songs, but ones very close to their folk-song roots – than that it almost sounds as if she is singing. Or, rather, that the tone of her viola occasionally takes on the overtones of a human voice. … Throughout, Levin’s accompanying is unfailingly sensitive. His deep intellectual investment allows him to go as deep into the music as Kashkashian does. [ Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago ]

Dimitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes Op. 34
Lera Auerbach: Arcanum - Sonata For Viola And Piano

Auerbach’s duo version of Shostakovich’s Op. 34 Piano Preludes — a cycle of 24 in all the major and minor keys, on the models of Bach and Chopin — is a wizardly reimagining of its source, and the performance here by her and violist Kim Kashkashian seems to channel the earlier composer’s distinctive sound world. […] As performers, Kashkashian and Auerbach make a superb team, playing with urgency and finely tuned balance. [ Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Elegies

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elliott Carter, Alexander Glasunow, Franz Liszt, Zoltan Kodaly, Henri Vieuxtemps

“Elegies,” an elegant but somber collection played by Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin, is perfect for a dreary, lonely day. With its darker, lower sound, a viola sounds like a violin which has lost its will to live, the perfect voice for singing an elegy — a song in praise to the dead. What a somber mood it is. The title of the first cut, Benjamin Britten’s “Lachrymae,” refers to tears. Britten doesn’t write of the tears from the first stab of heartbreak, but the exhausted tears which come later.” [ Associated Press ]

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn

This is a profoundly emotional album, by turns confrontational and mournfully resplendent. Kashkashian brings her usual heartrending strength to even the subtlest gestures and is never afraid to betray the fragility of her pitch. The orchestras, under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, are forces to be reckoned with that scintillate in a slightly distanced mix. A benchmark recording in all respects. [ ecm reviews ]

Linda Bouchard: Pourtinade
Paul Chihara: Redwood
Dimitri Shostakovich: Sonata For Violion And Piano, Op. 147

Kim Kashkashian’s third disc for ECM is a curiously mixed bag. Although the liner notes give some delightful anecdotes and insider’s information, I am torn over how much said information enriches my experience of the whole. For example, Kashkashian points to the percussiveness of Shotakovich’s piano writing in his Sonata for Viola and Piano op. 147 as justification for the two companion pieces scored for “actual” percussion and viola. To be sure, this is a fascinating connection, though one that perhaps only the performers can intuit with such immediacy. Either way, the knowledge does guide my listening in new directions and pushes me to burrow into the music wholeheartedly. [ ecm reviews ]
