CD ECM Records Barre Phillips: End To End

2018

Barre Phillips - contrabas
End to End is a solo bass album by one of the great pioneers of the idiom. Over the last fifty years Barre Phillips, California-born but long a resident of France, has periodically issued solo recordings, considering them the musical equivalent of diary entries (the first one, in 1968, was called Journal violone), updates on his ever-evolving relationship to his chosen instrument. This one, he says, will be the last of his albums in this format, so it is of special interest to those who have followed the story so far and, indeed, to anyone wishing to hear a masterful improviser at work, refocussing lessons learned in the course of a long, creative life. “It’s the end of a cycle,” says Barre, now 83, of the present recording. “Not a summing up, but the last pages of a journal that began fifty years ago.”

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Barre Phillips, Mat Maneri: Angles Of Repose

2004

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor
Barre Phillips - contrabas
Mat Maneri - viola

Joe Maneri, the eccentric, free-improvising saxophonist and pianist continues his long partnership with his son, Mat, a violinist. It’s a relationship that has been deepened by the duo’s collaborations with that great American double-bass player, Barre Phillips. Phillips’ technique and ear allow him to adapt readily to the Maneris’ fondness for lurking in the dangerous territories between the notes in the traditional western scale. Mat Maneri often plays an electric violin, and is frequently tumultuously energetic with it, but he restricts himself to viola on this session, and the set is entirely acoustic. …
A conversation between uncompromising equals, full of demanding but absorbing detail.

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Mat Maneri: Blessed

1998

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor, pian
Mat Maneri - vioara electrica cu 6 corzi, vioara bariton, viola electrica cu 5 corzi

The first-ever duo album from the the highly-idiosyncratic American masters of microtonal improvisation. Father and son Maneri speak a musical language all their own, even when, as here, they reach out to embrace standards (Mat's rivettingly strange account of 'Body And Soul'), spirituals (a wildly emotional 'Never Said A Mumblin' Word) or Greek music (Joe's tribute to Charlie Gardenis, 'the Bird of the Greek clarinet').

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Joe Morris, Mat Maneri: Three Man Walking

1996

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor, pian
Joe Morris - chitara electrica
Mat Maneri - vioara electrica cu 6 corzi

This album marks the ECM debut of Joe Maneri, a 69 year old improvisor and composer of vast originality, joined here by his son Mat Maneri and the highly-acclaimed guitarist Joe Morris. Three Men Walking is the second recording to be issued under Maneri's name and only the third album to feature him at all. In his long career, Maneri has never attempted to woo the music industry and, in consequence, his work is drastically underdocumented, but his reputation amongst creative musicians is secure. Paul Bley and George Russell have hailed Joe Maneri as "a genius"; Cecil Taylor has praised his courage and originality; Ran Blake has called him "one of the 20th century's greatest clarinettists".

1999

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor, pian, voce
Barre Phillips - contrabas
Mat Maneri - vioara el;ectrica cu 6 corzi, vioara bariton

The most talked-about father and son team in improvised music, microtonal innovators Joe and Mat Maneri, join forces with master bassist Barre Phillips. In these 'Tales of Rohnlief', moments of high humour are counterbalanced by deeply soulful playing. This is experimental jazz at its most warm-hearted and inviting.

CD ECM Records Michael Galasso: High Lines

2002
Michael Galasso - vioara
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Frank Coln - percutie
Marc Marder - contrabas

Classically-trained violinist/composer Galasso’s first ECM release in 20 years is a mix of influences from jazz and classical music to – probably – idioms from the near, middle and far east he has encountered in his ceaseless wandering around the world. … Galasso, who composed all these, mostly short, pieces, is a virtuoso of breathtaking quality, and Rypdal fills the performances in which he takes part with some compelling texture. Whether or not it may be considered jazz doesn’t really matter; it remains one of the more unusual releases of the year.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: The Astounding Eyes Of Rita

2009

Anouar Brahem - oud
Klaus Gesing - bas clarinet
Bjorn Meyer - bas electric
Khaled Yassine - darbouka, bendir

Although Brahem’s music is grounded in the traditions that have grown up around the oud over centuries…, his hybridization of those traditions with the ways of European and American jazz have made his extremely individual canon pointedly modern, and very much an example of a genuine world music. Brahem and Gesing’s beguiling interplay – a mystical poetry… – could not exist without rhythmic drive, supplied here… by Swedish bassist Björn Meyer and Lebanes percussionist Khaled Yassine. … Both he and Meyer drive the lead instrumentalists while also gathering a powerful energy between themselves. Throughout these eight tracks, it’s clear that not only do the clarinet and oud belong together, but the ideas that flow from both players mesh into an emotional and intellectual whole as they thrust and parry in turn, bending toward and away from each other. CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Le Voyage Du Sahar

2006

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon

This music is difficult to describe, as it blends myriad styles and forms spanning several cultures and centuries, but it speaks to the heart directly with a beauty and profundity that only the most obtuse listener could remain indifferent to. … Besides being a recording of extraordinary depth and dimensionality, Le Voyage de Sahar also serves as a master class to players of any stringed instrument, for Brahem’s phrasing, articulation, ornamentation, and sense of space are often simply breathtaking.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Blue Maqams

2017

Anouar Brahem - oud
Jack DeJohnette - tobe
Dave Holland - contrabas
Django Bates - pian

‘Blue Maqams’ will not only go down as one of the year's best ECM Records releases; it's a classic-in-the-making that should ultimately be considered one of the label's very best recordings in its nearly fifty-year history. [ John Kelman, All About Jazz ]

This glitzy lineup features his bass-playing soulmate Dave Holland, drums star Jack DeJohnette, and a wild card in the form of the UK’s Django Bates on piano. The result achieves a spellbinding balance between gently melodic Mediterranean song forms and the one-touch rhythmic elasticity and melodic ingenuity of the best jazz. The presence of Bates (producer Manfred Eicher’s idea, Brahem never having heard the English maverick before) is an inspiration, for his lyrical restraint, creative spaciousness, and diverse references. […] It’s a real meeting of hearts and minds. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem: Madar

1994
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Anouar Brahem - oud
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla

Despite the loveliness of these interactions, the album works best in solitary. Brahem’s contemplative solo, “Bahia,” treks over twilit mountains with aching footsteps, carrying us as if by palanquin into a vale of lost intentions. The wind of his percussiveness shakes the boughs of leafless trees and sends their dead seeds clicking to the ground like sand against a window. And in the rhythmic cast of “Jaw,” Hussain emotes lifetimes in a single beat of his tabla, thus offering some intensely lucid moments. He returns to the fold in “Qaws,” giving voice to those waiting eyes at last with solid excitement. An odd piano “Epilogue” (sounding like a chord outline for a studio track left behind) leads us out.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Anthem

2000
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

Operating somewhere between contemporary classical and jazz, ... Towner occupies a unique niche in jazz. Known for his carneo on Weather Report’s 1972 album I Sing The Body Electric and work with the classical crossover group Oregon and countless ECM luminaries, he is perhaps best loved for his solo recitals, of which Anthem is the latest – and it’s a gem. There’s a pair of jazz standards, but the majority of the mesmerising set comprises original 12-string and classical guitar pieces, aching, ruminative sketches and developed compositions of such emotional vividness and musical detail that they hardly seem to be the work of one man. The music tugs at the listener’s attention and, with breathtaking balance and control, is always compelling. The acoustic guitar has never sounded better, and neither has this amazing guitar player. CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Solstice

1974
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, chitara cu 12 corzi, pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor, flaut
Eberhard Weber - bas electric, violoncel
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

Down Beat: “Solstice inspires through its expressive openness… revealing depth of texture, nuance and meaning.” Perfect Sound Forever: “The LP is not only one of the moodiest ever published by ECM, but by anyone.” Solstice, recorded 1974, belongs to the great early production projects of ECM, with a new band formed in the studio. It’s the first of Towner’s recorded encounters with the European players, and this US-Norwegian-German quartet has a character all its own. Ralph’s synthesis of classical guitar technique and jazz improvisational skills inspires all participants on now-famous tunes including “Nimbus” and “Oceanus”. (Many future associations grew out of this meeting, including the Garbarek/Towner collaboration on Dis, and the integration of Eberhard Weber into the Jan Garbarek Group, and of Jon Christensen into Weber’s Colours band.)

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner - Solstice: Sound And Shadows

1977

Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six, pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, flaut
Eberhard Weber - bas electric, violoncel
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

If Ralph Towner’s classic Solstice was an overland journey, then Sound And Shadows is a subterranean dream. Featuring the same lineup as its predecessor—Jan Garbarek on saxophones, Eberhard Weber on bass and cello, Jon Christensen on drums, and Towner himself behind an arsenal of instruments—the results are perhaps not as focused. Then again, they don’t need to be.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Batik

1978
Ralph Towner - chitara, pian
Eddie Gomez - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

There are certain images that seem fail-proof when musically evoked. The “Waterwheel” that inaugurates us into guitarist Ralph Towner’s astonishingly beautiful Batik is one of them. Having since been painted for us by such varied talents as Hamza El Din (see the Kronos Quartet’s Pieces of Africa) and Marina Belica (former leader of the October Project, of which their self-titled debut is a personal all-time favorite), Towner’s particular configuration embodies the best of all worlds with the precision of his fingers magnified to great effect by Jack DeJohnette on drums and soothingly animated by the bass of Eddie Gomez.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: My Foolish Heart

2017

Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

In his dedication to the acoustic instrument, and his exploration of the borders of both classical and jazz, Ralph Towner is effectively the guitarist equivalent of Keith Jarrett: there’s a calm, reflective quality, allied to an intense involvement, about both players’ solo work, of which ‘My Foolish Heart’ may be Towner’s best since his sublime 1973 debut ‘Diary’. CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Danca Des Cabecas

1977
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian, voce, flaute
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, berimbau, voce

Egberto Gismonti’s Dança das Cabeças (recorded 1976) was the first ECM disc from the brilliant Brazilian guitarist and pianist and the first document of Egberto’s collaboration with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. It was a revelatory blending of sounds, Gismonti’s finely sculpted compositions irradiated by Nana’s Afro-Brazilian rhythm concept and his rainforest sounds. Dança das Cabeças won the German Record Critics Prize as Album of the Year in 1977.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Saudacoes

2006 - 2007

Egberto Gismonti - chitara
Alexandre Gismonti - chitara

Camerata Romeu, dirijor Zenaida Romeu
The brilliant, kaleidoscopic Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti has made his first album for ECM in 12 years, Saudações. It’s a double-exposure of where he is now. The first disc presents an orchestral piece… The second is totally different: an hour-plus of stunning guitar duets on original music with his son, Alexandre Gismonti. … This is Mr. Gismonti’s original style, rigorous, percussive, deep, harmony-rich, half of it tied to Brazilian popular music and the dance impulse, all of it singable. CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Solo

1979

Egberto Gismonti - chitara acustica, pian, voce, percutie

The sun rises on Solo through the 20-minute “Selva Amazonica, Pau Rolou,” by which Gismonti plants us into his fertile imagination. From that imagination we eventually depart with only the merest glimpses, despite the protracted track times.

The opening suite is replete with resonant 8-string guitar and the floating charm of his wordless singing. Touches such as the latter add hints of remembrance, sealing a child’s proverbial innocence with an adult’s creative stamp. Across this steel-stringed landscape Gismonti imprints the tread of the surdo (a bass drum of African origin), then settles into a pre-dawn hymn against a wavering backdrop of cooking bells.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Alma

1996
Egberto Gismonti - pian

This is definitely one of those few recordings I would want with me if I were stranded on a desert island.
Alma is sublimely beautiful, sad, and joyous. Many times I have been moved to tears by these compositions.
Even though Gismonte is a renowned guitarist, this recording features piano (with a few hints of synthesizer dropped in very sparingly, to wonderful effect).
Amazing, powerful music. [ Amazon ]

CD ECM Records Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti: In Montreal

1989
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian

This live album is amazing in its scope, power and beauty. On guitar or piano, Gismonti often sounds as if he's playing two instruments at once, combining fierce rhythms with shapely melodies while Haden's warm, rich bass broadens the music with grainy texture and depth...Gismonti and Haden always add twists to the rhythms and angles to the melodies, making the music prismatic.
