CD ECM Records Helena Tulve: Arboles Lloran Por Lluvia

2010

Helena Tulve, Arianna Savall, Charles Barbier, Taniel Kirikal, Marco Ambrosini, Riivo Kallasmaa, NYYD Quartet, Vox Clamantis, Ensemble Hortus Musicus, Jaan-Eik Tulve, Estonian National Symphony Orchestra, Olari Elts

In Tulve’s music the thinking always seems more vertical than horizontal; the predominant mood is introspective, almost meditational, the textures and harmonies beautifully imagined, the sense of pulse and forward momentum often elusive. ‘Extinction des Choses Vues’ for orchestra does build to a massive climax, achieved through weight and intensity rather than movement; the effect is rather like Kaija Saariaho’s music of the 1980s and 90s, and wonderfully achieved. 2008

Francois Couturier - pian

Its lovely performances, whether spontaneously devised or created from existing material, are the reflections of a gifted pianist first shaped by classical music. But the poet in Couturier … answers to diverse inspirations. … His responses give rise to some sensuously expressionist improvisations. [ Ray Comiskey, The Irish Times ]

CD ECM Records Zehetmair Quartett - Robert Schumann

Robert Schumann :
- Streichquartett Nr.1 In A-Mol, Op. 41/1
- Streichquartett Nr.3 In A-Mol, Op. 41/3

And these performances by the Zehetmair Quartet? Quite simply, the best: agile, excitable, nervously intense and in the slower music probing to an almost painful degree. Theirs is a dialogue that brings Schumann’s spirit to life, which is pretty rare in age that so often seems unresponsive to Romantic sensibilities. Indeed I would call these interpretations genuinely “authentic”. A watershed release, superbly recorded. [ Rob Cowan, Gramophone ]

CD ECM Records Reto Bieri: Contrechant - Music for Clarinet solo

2010

Reto Bieri - clarinet

Luciano Berio - Lied
Heinz Holliger - Contrechant
Salvatore Sciarrino - Let Me Die Before I Wake
Elliott Carter - Gra
Heinz Holliger - Rechant
Peter Eotvos - Derwischtanz
Gergely Vajda - Lightshadow - Trembling

Reto Bieri’s unaccompanied programme gets to the essence of each composer and actually feels the better fort he lack of busy counterpoint (e.g. in the case of Elliott Carter). And there is no risk of solo clarinet becoming insufficient; Bieri holds attention throughout with his beauty of tone and uncommon expressiveness with multiphonics, which can often feel gimmicky. A marvellous disc which takes clarinet playing to a new level. Highly recommended to explorer listeners who don’t seek just facile excitement. [ Peter Grahame Woolf, Musikal Pointers ]

Karl Amadeus Hartmann - Streichquartett Nr.1 - Carillon
Bela Bartok - Streichquartett Nr. 4

Debut recording of the astonishing quartet of whom The Times of London wrote: 'What a group! On they come, devoid of frills, just the instruments, and the music in their heads and fingers. And then they start up, the sound so full-blooded, dangerous and raw. Though the velvet touch is not beyond them, they never dispense dainty milk and honey: you are forcefully aware that this is music-making bold and magical...'

2015

Zsofia Kornyei - vioara
Janos Pilz - vioara
Zoltan Gal - viola
Judit Szabo - violoncel
Otto Kertesz - violoncel
Alexei Lubimov - pian

In program: Beethoven, Ligeti, Bach, Kurtag, Schnittke, Knaifel

The Keller Quartett’s new recording is a collection of slow movements, recorded from 1995 to 2012. If that puts you in mind of those bloated compilations of yesteryear with titles like ‘Adagio’ and ‘Classical Relaxation,’ fear not: What violinist András Keller and ECM producer Manfred Eicher have created is a series of gestures in which, regardless of style or era, time is made to stand still. […] The final movement of Schnittke’s Piano Quintet (with Alexei Lubimov) is emblematic of the whole project: A lullaby-like theme is gradually layered with dissonance and a sense of tragedy, so that as it fades out, it seems drained of its innocence. It’s not unlike what happens when the Beethoven returns at the end. […] It’s the originality of its conception that makes this disc so worthwhile. [ David Weininger, Boston Sunday Globe ]

CD ECM Records Keller Quartett - Gyorgy Kurtag: Music Fur Streichinstrumente

1996

Andras Keller - vioara
Janos Pilz - vioara
Zoltan Gal - viola
Otto Kertesz - violoncel

The apparent heir of Anton Webern and Béla Bartók, György Kurtág shows his influences most directly in his works for string quartet. Yet Kurtág's abandonment of the standard quartet form -- a major consideration in the music of his predecessors -- permits him to freely explore timbres and techniques and for their own sakes, in lieu of thematic development and traditional structures. The most significant works on this disc are the String Quartet, Op. 1 (1959); the 12 Microludes (1977-1978); and the Officium breve in memoriam Andreae Szervánszky (1988-1989). [ AllMusic ]

György Kurtág Jr., son of the great Hungarian composer, has long been developing his own electronic music. In this unusual project, fellow composer László Hortobágyi integrates Kurtág themes into his own arrangements in a recording that celebrates a long friendship. “This is,” say the group members, “a Hortobágyi album about Kurtág,” as well as “an invitation to discover a new sphere of music”.

CD ECM Records Rosamunde Quartett - Tigran Mansurian: String Quartets

2005

Rosamunde Quartet

Andreas Reiner - vioara
Simon Fordham - vioara
Helmut Nicolai - viola
Anja Lechner - violoncel

Both the first and second string quartets by the Lebanese-born Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian are predominantly slow and mournful pieces, each completed in 1984 and written in memory of a recently dead friend. The language is direct, but Mansurian is not of any formulaic minimalist school. Rather, his structures are built on a richness of harmony and melodic expression that allies him to late Beethoven. Both works – each cast in three movements – and the eloquent and dark single movement Testament … are played with miraculously sustained poise by the Rosamunde Quartet. Armenian Chamber Choir, dirijor Robert Mlkeyan

This is open, honest fare – no games, no gimmicks, no special effects. The musical expression of a poetic image is what engages the composer. Nothing else intrudes because nothing else matters. … The singing pays admirable homage to Mansurians’s music. The recording was made at a concert in an Armenian monastery and is rich and satisfying. CD ECM Records Tigran Mansurian: Requiem

2017

Anja Petersen - soprana
Andrew Redmond - bariton
RIAS Kammerchor + Münchener Kammerorchester, dirijor Alexander Liebreich

Tigran Mansurian has created a Requiem dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide that occurred in Turkey from 1915 to 1917. Co-commissioned by the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the RIAS Choir Berlin, Mansurian’s Requiem reconciles the sound and sensibility of his country’s traditions with those of Western practices, the combination of ancient Armenian religious and secular music with the Latin Requiem text “giving rise to something unexpected,” the composer says. This is profoundly moving contemporary composition, illuminated by the “glow of Armenian modality,” as Paul Griffiths puts it in his booklet essay. The work is a milestone for Mansurian, widely acknowledged as Armenia’s greatest composer. The Los Angeles Times has described his music as that “in which deep cultural pain is quieted through an eerily calm, heart-wrenching beauty.”

The first ECM leader date for Shai Maestro (following his label debut with Theo Bleckmann on Elegy) features the gifted pianist fronting his superlative trio with fellow Israeli Ofri Nehemya on drums and Peruvian bassist Jorge Roeder, and also playing alone. A solo interpretation of Matti Caspi’s “My Second Childhood” opens the curtain on a programme of characteristically thoughtful Maestro originals, each one with a story to tell. “Hearing the Shai Maestro Trio is like awakening to a new world”, All About Jazz has suggested.

CD ECM Records Vijay Iyer, Wadada Leo Smith: A Cosmic Rhythm With Each Stroke

2016

Vijay Iyer - pian, Fender Rhodes, electronice
Wadada Leo Smith - trompeta

A trumpet/piano duo is a tough call, but the two operate with a charismatic delicacy and subtle force. The centrepiece is a largely improvised seven-part suite dedicated to Indian visual artist Nasreen Mohamedi. Smith’s tone and phrasing often reflect mid-period Miles Davis, but he blends free jazz into those resources with a unique poetic focus. Long high squeals and tumbling unfold over Iyer’s humming electronics, a bright brass fanfare soars over a chordal rumble, and a lamenting muted-trumpet descent invokes ‘Sketches of Spain’. Iyer mostly functions as a discreet foil, but this intimate conversation swells from interesting to enthralling as it unfolds. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

American composer Stephen Hartke, born in 1952, deserves to be heard in the UK and beyond. His postmodern scores, drawing deep from the well of plainsong and also inspired by poetic and visual imagery, are strikingly original, as this revelatory disc from ECM proves from the off. Tituli changes the mood with lightning speed, moving from monkish incantations to wild outbursts and back again. The seven-movement work for male voices, violin and percussion sets ancient Roman texts in Old Latin, including shop signs and epitaphs. Cathedral in the Thrashing Rain translates Japanese poet Takamura Kotaro’s evocative impressions of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris into music that you can almost touch and smell. Nicolas Gombert: 16th-century, born in Flanders, a leading musical figure in Spain at Emperor Charles V’s court… For 400 years his music slumbered, but specialist choirs such as the bold and peerless Hilliard Ensemble are now getting drunk on his vocal counterpoint. Very intoxicating. Music that lifts the spirit and gives no hiding place to performers. Not that the Hilliards need one. [ Geoff Brown, The Times ]

Working with an incredibly rich harmonic palette, the incisive articulation and collegial homogeneity which the ensemble achieves is remarkable. As one listens to the first section of “Singet dem Herrn” … the combination of terpsichorean grace with contrapuntal fluidity takes the breath away. Even by The Hilliard Ensemble’s elevated standards this is singing of quite extraordinary power. … Captured in the glorious acoustic of the Propstei St Gerold … the kaleidoscopic luminosity of these sui generis works brings the listener irrevocably closer to Bach’s genius. Alfred Schnittke: Symphony No. 9
Alexander Raskatov: Nunc Dimittis - In Memoriam Alfred Schnittke

Composed shortly before his death in 1998, Schnittke’s ultimate symphony – actually his very last work – is a “Ninth” in a most unusual sense: Put down with a shaky left hand by an artist who had survived four strokes and was laterally debilitated, it is an impressive triumph of spiritual energy over physical constraints. The composer’s widow Irina treated the barely-legible manuscript as a testament and was long doubtful whom to entrust with the difficult task of deciphering and reconstructing the highly expressive three movements for large orchestra (some 38 minutes of music). She finally settled on Moscow-born Alexander Raskatov, who not only provided a thorough score but, convinced that Schnittke had intended to write a fourth movement, also developed the idea to add an independent epilogue, the “Nunc Dimitis” (“Lord, let thy servant now depart into thy promis'd rest”) for mezzo soprano, vocal quartett and orchestra. It is based on the famous text by orthodox monk Starets Siluan and on verses by Joseph Brodsky, Schnittke’s favourite poet.

Nothing sums up the bold apparoach to repertoire better than this CD which mixes Italian Renaissance madrigals with Roger Marsh’s 2008 vocal work ‘Il Cor Tristo’ – setting parts of Dante’s ‘Inferno’ to austere chanted chords from which single voices break out. Grim words; haunting music; masterly performance. [ Richard Morrsison, The Times ]
