CD ECM Records Andras Keller, Janos Pilz - Bela Bartok: 44 Duos For Two Violins

2002

Andras Keller - vioara
Janos Pilz - vioara

Bartók's 44 Duos belong to a select rank of minor masterpieces for two violins that stretches from the duets of Spohr to the recent piece by Kurtág included here - a spectral chorale of exquisite beauty. Bartók wrote his highly inventive Duos - almost all of them arrangements of folksongs from various cultures - for a German violin pedagogue, grading them in order of technical difficulty. Kim Kashkashian viola
Sivan Magen harpa
Marina Piccinini flaut

Stellar collaboration of three musicians at the top of their game […] Their recording of Debussy’s dazzling, inventive sonata is full of sonic pleasures, as are the two new pieces, the pensive, poetic ‘And Then I Knew ’Twas Wind’ by Toru Takemitsu and Sofia Gubaidulina’s Eastern reverie ‘Garten von Freuden und Traurigkeiten’. CD ECM Records Andras Schiff - Leos Janacek: A Recollection

2001

András Schiff - pian

The peerless András Schiff in his first recital recording of Janacek's piano music. The 'story-telling ' piano pieces chosen by Schiff can be closely related to Bartók's 'Mikrokosmos' and have a similarly timeless appeal. As writer Rob Cowan notes, 'No matter how many times you listen to these gems, the sum effect of emotional engagement, wonderment and love of life is as lasting as one's admiration for the music's miniaturist construction. They are truly 'the world in a grain of sand'.'

CD ECM Records Carolin Widmann - Robert Schumann: The Violin Sonatas

2008

Carolin Widmann - vioara
Denes Varjon - pian

Schumann’s violin sonatas, written at the end of his life… are fascinating pieces, unfairly neglected in the concert hall, and it is bracing to hear them played together so insightfully here. … The ardent disc, confirming the works as canonical, is … one to treasure. [ Paul Driver, Sunday Times ]

CD ECM Records Galina Ustvolskaya

2013

Patricia Kopatchinskaja - vioara
Markus Hinterhauser - pian
Reto Bieri - clarinet

Ustvolskaya was trying to encourage listeners to hear her music on its own supremely self-assured terms. It’s a tough standard to meet, on a recording — though it’s one that any new album of Ustvolskaya works should attempt to create anyway. This one pulls off that task both in its moments of fireworks and in the sections of eerie quiet. For that, we can thank ECM’s all-star cast. Early in the 2014 season, rising violin star Patricia Kopatchinskaja performed two of the pieces on this album at a rapturously received late-night concert at Berlin’s Philharmonie. CD ECM Records Duo Gazzana: Five Pieces - Takemitsu / Hindemith / Janacek / Silvestrov

2011

Natascia Gazzana - vioara
Raffaella Gazzana - pian

Toru Takemitsu - Distance Du Fee (1951)
Paul Hindemith - Sonata In E (1935)
Leos Janacek - Sonata (1914, rev 1921)
Valentin Silvestrov - Five Pieces (2004)

These works – a gently-pulsing elegy, a serenade, an intermezzo, a barcarole, a ghostly nocturne - receive their international release here in a context which combines the familiar and the far-flung, as Duo Gazzana finds creative affinities between the music of four very different composers. “The programme as a whole is typical of the duo’s inquiring and sensitive approach to repertory”, writes Paul Griffiths in the liner notes. “What we hear here is a vital freshness”.

CD ECM Records Duo Gazzana: Poulenc / Walton / Dallapiccola / Schnittke / Silvestrov

2013

Natascia Gazzana - vioara
Raffaella Gazzana - pian

These works call often for considerable interpretive and technical excellence. The youthful dash of Duo Gazzana give us plenty of both in a program of unity within great diversity. What seems at first a potpourri of varying modern period masters and their works comes together to give us a sort of survey of the ways tradition has not always been overturned in modern times but sometimes also has aided and forwarded the search for new sounds within expressive and structural models that date back centuries. Duo Gazzana brings us performances of vivid musicality. One could not ask for much better than this. [ Grego Applegate Edwards, Gapplegate Classical-Modern Music Review ]

CD ECM Records Kiev Chamber Choir - Valentin Silvestrov: Sacred Songs

2007

Kiev Chamber Choir, dirijor Mykola Hobdych

The Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov may have come late to choral music, but this disc - the latest in ECM’s series devoted to the composer - brings together his ‘a cappella’ pieces written in 2006 and 2007. Appropriately enough the magnificent Kiev Chamber Choir, who also are featured in ‘Sacred Works’ (ECM 2117), are recorded in the cathedral that forms part of St Michael’s Golden-Domed Monastery, Kiev. For its third ECM release, the prize-winning Danish String Quartet inaugurates a series of five albums with the overarching title of Prism, in which the group will present one of Beethoven’s late string quartets in the context of a related fugue by J.S. Bach as well as a linked masterwork from the quartet literature. With Prism 1, it’s the first of Beethoven’s late quartets, op. 127 in E-flat Major, alongside Bach’s fugue in the same key (arranged by Mozart) and Dmitri Shostakovich’s final string quartet, the No. 15 in E-flat minor.

CD ECM Records Cikada Quartet - Saariaho, Cage, Maderna: In Due Tempi

2005

The Cikada String Quartet

Henrik Hannisdal - vioara
Odd Hannisdal - vioara
Marek Konstantynowicz - viola
Morten Hannisdal - violoncel

Kaija Saariaho - Nymphea ( For String Quartet And Live Electronics )
John Cage - String Quartet In Four Parts
Bruno Maderna - Quartetto Per Due Archi In Due Tempi

These quartets illustrates three contrasting approaches to form and language. The earliest, John Cage’s String Quartet in Four Parts, is a sequence of spare, gestural movements that, typically, forces us to contemplate the nature of sound, silence and space. Bruno Maderna’s Quartetto per archi in due tempi, written for Berio, uses as its basis a serial technique that involves not just pitch but duration. It rejoices in refinement but also extremities – here lyrical, there brutal. Kaija Saariaho’s single-movement Nymphea for quartet and live electronics was written under the influence of the spectralists Gerard Grisey and Tristan Murail. It’s a work of ever varying textures, surfaces, colours. The Cikadas play everything superbly. [ Stephen Pettitt, Sunday Times ]

CD ECM Records Maxim Rysanov, Kristina Blaumane - Dobrinka Tabakova: String Paths

2012
Kristina Blaumane - violoncel
Maxim Rysanov - viola, dirijor
Roman Mints - vioara
Lithuanian Chamber Orchestra
+etc

Tabakova is fortunate in her musical friends, and many of them are gathered here to make her music: Kristina Blaumane and Maxim Rysanov are outstanding soloists in the Cello Concerto and ‘Suite in Old style’ respectively, but the performances are of the highest quality across the CD as a whole. The recordings bring clarity to the solo lines and rich reverberance to the carpet of string-orchestral sound that Tabakova favours. A winner, then, and I urge you to make its acquaintances soon – it will take only the opening bars of ‘Insight’ to persuade you that you made the right decision.

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Sarah Rothenberg, Steven Schick - Feldman / Satie / Cage: Rothko Chapel

2015

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Sarah Rothenberg - pian, Celeste
Steven Schick - percutie
Sonja Bruzauskas - mezzo-soprana
Lauren Snouffer - soprana
Houston Chamber Choir , dirijor Robert Simpson

Rothko Chapel addresses a network of musical relationships and inspirations. The album opens with Morton Feldman’s Rothko Chapel, named for the Houston, Texas multi-faith chapel built to house Mark Rothko’s site-specific paintings. Feldman considered that his music lay “between categories, between time and space, between painting and music”, and described the score as his “canvas”. Amongst his most important influences were abstract painters, his friend Rothko prominent amongst them. (Rothko, for his part, yearned to “raise painting to the level of music and poetry”.)

CD ECM Records Vijay Iyer Trio: Break Stuff

2014

Vijay Iyer - pian
Stephan Crump - contrabas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe

"Though Break Stuff is Vijay Iyer's third appearance on ECM in less than year, it is the debut offering from the longstanding trio on the label. The pianist and composer has been working with bassist Stephen Crump and drummer Marcus Gilmore for more than a decade. They've issued two previous recordings together. Iyer usually works conceptually, and Break Stuff is no exception. In the press release he states that "a break in music is still music: a span of time in which to act. [ AllMusic ]
