2009

Andreas Reiner - vioara

Anja Lechner - violoncel
Christian Gerhaher - bariton

Othmar Schoeck - Notturno (für Streichquartett und eine Singstimme), op. 47

If anything can broaden interest in the art of Swiss composer Othmar Schoeck, it is this wonderful recording of his song cycle for baritone and string quartet. … The work represents Schoeck’s dark night of the soul – an act of introspection that expresses existential doubts in music of the most intimate lyricism. The intricacy with which Schoeck intertwines the voices, vocal and instrumental, is one of his supreme achievements. … Gerhaher, sensitively supported by the Rosamunde Quartet, proves himself a more-than-worthy successor, summoning many of Fischer-Dieskau’s interpretative qualities. CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Symphony No. 6

2007

SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, dirijor Andrey Boreyko

A defining orchestral work by Ukrainian composer Valentin Silvestrov, one of the most individual voices from the former Soviet Union. His sixth symphony, written in 1994/95, a five-part work stretching over 55 minutes, offers an impressive synthesis of Silvestrov’s personal style which he himself has called “Metamusik”: music beyond music, sounds, often verging on silence, eavesdropping on long-lost reverberations.

CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Bagatellen Und Serenaden

2007

Valentin Silvestrov - pian
Alexei Lubimov - pian
Münchener Kammerorchester, Christoph Poppen

Documentation of orchestral music by Valentin Silvestrov in Munich gained an unexpected extra dimension with the spontaneous decision to record the Ukrainian composer playing the piano before and after the ‘official’ session. The results, captured in the early morning and late afternoon, are fascinating, offering an intimate glimpse into Silvestrov’s reflective musical language. The first half of this disc features Silvestrov alone. In the second half, Christoph Poppen directs the Munich Chamber Orchestra and Alexei Lubimov again reveals his deep affinity for Silvestrov’s oeuvre. In all, a true ‘composer portrait’, in time for Valentin Silvestrov’s 70th birthday.

CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Hieroglyphen Der Nacht

2017

Anja Lechner - violoncel, Tamtam
Agnès Vesterman - violoncel

Released in time for the great Ukrainian composer’s 80th birthday on September 30, Hieroglyphen der Nacht features Valentin Silvestrov’s music for solo violoncello and for two cellos. German cellist Anja Lechner has had a long association with Silvestrov, first documented on the Grammy-nominated leggiero, pesante in 2001. Here she plays, alone, Augenblicke der Stille und Traurigkeit (of which she is the dedicatee), Lacrimosa, Walzer der Alpengöckchen, and Elegie (which calls for her to play both cello and tamtams). Lechner is joined by French cellist Agnès Vestermann, a frequent duo partner, to play Drei Stücke (dedicated to both musicians), 8.VI. 1810…zum Geburtstag R.A. Schumann, Zwei Serenaden, and 25.X.1893…zum Andenken an P.I. Tschaikowskij. As so often with Silvestrov, the compositions often take the form of metaphorical conversations with composers of the past and the present. Tchaikovsky and Schumann are amongst the composers referenced here, while Lacrimosa is a reaction to music of his friend Tigran Mansurian. “My own music is a response to and an echo of what already exists,” says Silvestrov, viewing his oeuvre as a series of “codas” to music history.

CD ECM Records Valentin Silvestrov: Leggiero, Pesante

2002

Maacha Deubner - soprana
Silke Avenhaus - pian
Valentin Silvestrov - pian
Rosamunde Quartett
Andreas Reiner - vioara
Simon Fordham - vioara
Helmut Nicolai - viola
Anja Lechner - violoncel

This album of chamber music is the first in a series of ECM releases by Valentin Silvestrov, intended to spotlight the work of this important Ukrainian composer in the months and years to come. The pieces on the present recording - made with the participation of the composer - were written between 1974 and 2001. Inspired performances by Anja Lechner and Silke Avenhaus, Maacha Deubner and the Rosamunde Quartett bring out the highly individual lyricism and melodic feeling at the heart of Silvestrov's music. Silvestrov himself adds the 'final caesura', with his tender piano performance of his 'Hymn 2001'.

CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach: Tangere

2017

Alexei Lubimov - tangent piano

Russian pianist Alexei Lubimov is the rare artist who has been a trailblazer in two directions, both a champion of new music (from Cage to Silvestrov) and a dedicated interpreter of Baroque music with a passion for period instruments. In this remarkable reading of music by CPE Bach, Lubimov responds to the inventiveness of the composer’s fantasies, sonatas and rondos by making full creative use of the sonorities of the tangent piano. Briefly popular in the early 18th century, the tangent piano (whose strings are struck from beneath by wood or metal “tangents” and allowed to vibrate) offered greater expressiveness and intensity than the harpsichord.

CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov - Stravinsky, Shostakovich, Prokofiev, Skriabin: Messe Noire

2005

Alexei Lubimov - pian

Igor Stravinsky: Serenade in A for piano
Dimitri Shostakovich: Sonata No. 2 op. 61 for piano
Sergey Prokofiev: Sonata No. 7 op. 83 for piano
Alexander Scriabin: Sonata No. 9 op. 68 for piano

Alexei Lubimov certainly has a fine pianistic pedigree. Born in Moscow in 1944, he was one of the last students of Heinrich Neuhaus, whose previous pupils included both Emil Gilels and Sviatoslav Richter. Unlike those greats, however, the core of Lubimov’s repertory has always been the 20th century. … On this disc, the focus is Russian music from the first half of the 20th-century… Lubimov’s relaxed, transparent performance of Shostakovich’s Second Sonata and tightly coiled one of Prokofiev’s Seventh are both hugely impressive, as is his surprisingly emollient account of Scriabin’s “Black Mass” sonata. CD ECM Records Alexei Lubimov, Natalia Pschenitschnikova - John Cage: As It Is

2012

Alexei Lubimov - pian, pian preparat
Natalia Pschenitschnikova - voce

A fresh approach to one of contemporary composition’s most iconoclastic and inventive figures, issued on the occasion of John Cage’s 100th birthday. Early Cage is the subject here, strikingly original songs and piano pieces from the 1930s and 1940s. Songs in which Cage sets words by writers whose vision was as independent as his own – James Joyce, Gertrude Stein, E. E. Cummings. As Paul Griffiths writes, “The music exists in singing that has a raw, living edge, and it exists in piano tone that can be utterly simple and utterly remarkable. There is also a third presence that of the producer, bringing forward the extraordinary resonances that come from Lubimov’s piano, with preparation or without.” Lubimov championed Cage’s work in Russia and later had a close working relationship with the composer. He grasps both the playfulness of the music and its message of freedom. Recorded December 2011 in Zürich.

CD ECM Records Misha Alperin: Her First Dance

2008

Misha Alperin - pian
Arkady Shilkloper - french horn, flugelhorn
Anja Lechner - violoncel

The keyboard virtuosity is awesome: check the buzzing-bee agility over slow countermelodies on Vayan, or the alternately coquettish and frenzied Jump. But the album’s dominant quality is the power of its compositions, which are all Alperin’s except for Shilkloper’s and Lechner’s dialogue on Russian Song. The lovely title track has a gentle child’s-dance piano part, and Tiflis displays a horn sound you could warm your hands on. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

2006

Paul Motian - tobe

Steve Cardenas - chitara
Ben Monder - chitara
Jakob Bro - chitara
Jerome Harris - bas

Listening to Paul Motian’s music can bring to mind architect Mies van der Rohe’s celebrated adage that his work aimed for an effect of „almost nothing“. In the case of both Mies and Motian, their magisterial art might belie their intent, but fashioning much from less has continued to be as essential a modus operandi for the New York jazz drummer as it was for the German visionary. … Motian’s genius lies in maintaining an understated, lingering tension, thus dissolving any vestiges of New Age moistness. By keeping the bass and guitar parts harmonically indirect, and by positioning substantive, if concise, improvisations from saxophonists Tony Malaby and Chris Cheek, Motian – his now-murmuring, now-biting, always unpredictable drumming commenting on it all from beneath – ensures edginess. Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

“Danish guitarist Jakob Bro creates magical music, impossible to categorize”, wrote Downbeat recently. On Returnings the magic is intensified as Bro and musical soul-mate Thomas Morgan reconnect with two living legends of European jazz, trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and drummer Jon Christensen. It’s a wonderful combination: Bro’s watercolour guitar sounds, Mikelborg’s soft Milesian flugelhorn, Morgan’s impeccable choice of notes, and Christensen’s free-floating drumming . These components add up to one of the prettiest and subtlest jazz albums of recent times. Returnings was recorded in July 2016 at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

“There is no hurry to this music, but there is great depth,” observed London Jazz News about Danish guitarist Jakob Bro’s trio with two kindred-spirit Americans: bassist Thomas Morgan and drummer Joey Baron. This poetically attuned group follows its ECM studio album of 2016, Streams – which The New York Times lauded as “ravishing” – with what Bro calls “a dream come true,” an album recorded live in New York City, over two nights at the Jazz Standard. Bay of Rainbows rolls on waves of contemplative emotion as the three musicians explore five pieces from the guitarist’s catalog, with the gorgeous “Copenhagen” a favorite reprised from Gefion, Bro’s 2015 ECM release.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner / John Abercrombie: Five Years Later

1981

Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six
John Abercrombie - chitara acustica, , electrica, mandolina electrica

John Abercrombie is unique among guitarists in that whenever he becomes enraptured his sound becomes neither louder nor more pronounced but becomes somehow mysterious, liberated. Ralph Towner, on the other hand, revels in the crackling ruptures that so characterize his playing. Yet these roles seem reversed in this follow-up to the duo’s Sargasso Sea. A far more fragile carnation than its predecessor, it seems to forego the usual bag of tricks in favor of something more, as the album’s title would imply, reflective. This is especially apparent in the three improvisations with which the set list is dotted, and nowhere more so than in “Late Night Passenger,” where Abercrombie’s laddered filaments provide stunning berth for the other’s muted, jangling starlight.
