CD ECM Records Ketil Bjornstad, David Darling: The River

1997

Ketil Bjornstad -pian
David Darling - violoncel

"Bjørnstad’s love of aquatic themes stretches an ideal surface tension across which Darling may unfurl his sails. The delicate ostinato of one becomes the leviathan drone of the other, drawing threads through opaque expanse (just as Swiss-born artist Mayo Bucher has placed a white edge through this and select other ECM cover paintings). CD ECM Records Ralph Towner / Paolo Fresu: Chiaroscuro

2008
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, chitara cu 12 corzi, chitara bariton
Paolo Fresu - trompeta, flugelhorn

Acoustic guitar and trumpet aren’t an ordinary combination, and Chiaroscuso is, aptly, an extraordinary album. Ralph Towner, a reflective man’s guitar hero for four decades, has paired with young Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu. Fresu floats pure, vibrato-less lines through Towner’s harmonic webs on classical, 12-string and baritone guitars. Towner revisits his early “Wistful Thinking” and has written such new beauties as “Sacred Place”, which evokes the cinematic richness of Ennio Morricone. Fresu channels Miles Davis on an impressionistic cover of “Blue in Green. [ Bradley Bambarger, The Star-Ledger ]

2014
Lars Danielsson - contrabas, violoncel, pian
Tigran Hamasyan - pian, Fender Rhodes
John Parricelli - chitara
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie, electronice

"Liberetto II" by the exceptional Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson is the living proof. Three years ago he found a quartet with the former e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström, the British guitarist John Paricelli and most of all as a new dream team duo with Armenian pianist Tigran. It interpreted his compositions and realised his musical ideas more precisely than probably any ensemble before it.

1974
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, chitara cu 12 corzi, pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor, flaut
Eberhard Weber - bas electric, violoncel
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

Down Beat: “Solstice inspires through its expressive openness… revealing depth of texture, nuance and meaning.” Perfect Sound Forever: “The LP is not only one of the moodiest ever published by ECM, but by anyone.” Solstice, recorded 1974, belongs to the great early production projects of ECM, with a new band formed in the studio. It’s the first of Towner’s recorded encounters with the European players, and this US-Norwegian-German quartet has a character all its own. Ralph’s synthesis of classical guitar technique and jazz improvisational skills inspires all participants on now-famous tunes including “Nimbus” and “Oceanus”. (Many future associations grew out of this meeting, including the Garbarek/Towner collaboration on Dis, and the integration of Eberhard Weber into the Jan Garbarek Group, and of Jon Christensen into Weber’s Colours band.)

"With this record, John Abercrombie both repaved and detoured from his staid path. He could hardly have been in finer company, and the combination seems to have fanned all sorts of flames within him. DeJohnette and Holland string an array of tightropes across which Abercrombie balances his way into previously uncharted territory. [ ecmreviews ]

The original conceptual idea for the Brass Project was to set John Surman’s improvising trio with bassist Chris Laurence and drummer John Marshall at the centre of a radiant brass choir of trumpets and trombones. With John Warren invited to contribute compositions and to conduct the group, the Brass Project quickly evolved into a more organic large ensemble, and by the time of this 1992 recording had become one of the most creative configurations in Britain. The elegant arrangements of Warren’s and Surman’s profoundly melodic music inspire many eloquent and touching solos.

CD ECM Records Peter Erskine Trio: Juni

1997

John Taylor - pian
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe

editie Touchstones - format mini-vinil replica, coperti gatefold, cartonate

Recorded in 1997, Juni was the fourth and final ECM album of the Peter Erskine Trio. A piano trio led by a drummer was an unusual proposal and one that initially surprised listeners who had followed Erskine through louder adventures with Weather Report and the Stan Kenton Big Band. But this alliance with pianist John Taylor, the trio’s primary composer, and bassist Palle Danielsson soon found its own following. Down Beat described the music as “Zen-like” implying that much of its power resided in the not-played. “If such a thing as virtuosic understatement is possible, Peter Erskine's band makes it real,” the Ottawa Citizen agreed.

CD ECM Records Eleni Karaindrou: Euripides - Medea

2011

This is music created for the Medea production put on by stage director Antonis Antypas, as performed at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus. The Medea enacted there is Giorgos Cheimonas' adaptation from the original Euripides version of the play. Musically it has a timeless, exotic quality. Eleni Karaindrou utilizes a 15-member chorus; Eleni herself effectively contributes a solo part. Plus there is an 8-member chamber group with strong Greek and Eastern Mediterranean associations. The ensemble consists of three clarinets, ney, a player of the Constantinople lute (sounding much like an oud) and lyra, then cello, the santour, and the bendir. With these means Ms. Karaindrou creates a music of great evocative beauty, with its ancient scales and traditional instruments providing sound color and spatial punctuation, the vocals from chorus and soloists extending the sound and all-in-all creating a through-composed modern ambient pomo sort of work that is very identifiably Karaindrou-esque. Even in the purely instrumental passages the reflective, haunting melodiousness of Karaindrou comes through. It sounds less like ‘authentic’ ancient Greek-Eastern Mediterranean music as the idea of that as filtered by an ‘authentic’ Eleni Karaindrou sensibility. And it is one of her very strongest works at that. The performances are excellent, the sound all you'd expect from ECM [ Grego Applegate, Gapplegate Music Review ]

Ulysses' Gaze was awarded the Grand Jury Prize at the 1995 Cannes Film Festival. Ulysses' Gaze, the album, is the third ECM recording to feature music written by Eleni Karaindrou for her countryman Angelopoulos. The first edition, issued under the title Music For Films focused primarily upon the director's great Trilogy of Silence (Voyage To Cythera, The Beekeeper, and Landscape In The Mist). The second presented music written for The Suspended Step Of The Stork, Angelopoulos' critically-heralded 1991 film.

Lars Andreas Haug - tuba
Tone Reichelt - french horn
Per Oddvar Johansen - tobe
Frode Haltli - acordeon
Arve Henriksen - trompeta
Morten Hannisdal - violoncel

“Sangam”, means “coming together”, in Sanskrit, sometimes taken to signify “the meeting point of three rivers”. Interpret that literally in Trygve Seim’s case and the different rivers might symbolize the cross-referencing of jazz, contemporary composition and diverse world folk traditions in his work. On the second ECM album issued under his name, the Norwegian saxophonist draws inspiration from musical and non-musical sources both local and far-flung, bringing these influences to bear on compositions and arrangements that are uniquely personal. Seim has been heard recently with The Source, the improvising group he co-leads with Øyvind Brække and Per Oddvar Johansen (both featured here), and has guested on Christian Wallumrød’s “Sofienberg Variations”, but “Sangam” is closer in spirit to “Different Rivers”, the ECM debut that overwhelmed international critics in 2001.

Fly conquers the challenge presented to all trios in its ability to think as one, telepathically adjusting as each member prods or pulls back, making space for a gorgeous tenor comment or a perfectly chosen rim shot then undulating into another collective form and shape. Fly’s ability to probe each member’s mind is its greatest asset. The results often prove revelatory.

Berit Cardas - vioara
Henninge Landaas - viola
Bjørg Vaernes - violoncel

Lucrari de : Bent Sørensen, PerMagnus Lindborg, Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje, Markus Lindberg, Asbjørn Schaathun

Looking on Darkness is the solo recording debut of accordionist Frode Haltli, a major talent from Norway, destined to make his mark on several genres. He was last heard on ECM in the company of Trygve Seim and friends, but his primary commitment is to the performance of contemporary composition and this album features Nordic new music - from Norway, Sweden, Denmark and Finland - written for the accordion. Four of the five pieces are premiere recordings, written especially for Halti. They add up to a fascinating landscape of new music from the north, music which casts its inspirational net wide. Features compositions by Bent Sørensen, Asbjørn Schaathun, Magnus Lindberg, PerMagnus Lindborg, and Maja Solveig Kjelstrup Ratkje. Halti is joined by the Vertavo String Quartet for Ratkje's gagaku variations.

Bent Sorensen: It Is Pain Flowing Slowly On A White Wall
Hans Abrahamsen: Air
Hans Abrahamsen: Three Little Nocturnas
Bent Sorensen: Sigrids Wiegenlied

The innovative Norwegian accordionist Frode Haltli is heard here with chamber orchestra, with string quartet and solo, performing music written for him by Danish composers Bent Sørensen and Hans Abrahamsen. Sørensen, he notes, has been an influence on his development as a player, challenging perceptions of what can be achieved on the accordion through tone control and nuances in soft dynamics, a subject explored in detail on It is Pain Flowing Down Softly on a White Wall, where Haltli is heard with the Trondheim Soloists. Hans Abrahamsen’s Three Little Nocturnes find the accordionist in the company of the redoubtable Arditti Quartet. For the title composition Air, Hans Abrahamsen returned, at Frode Haltli’s suggestion, to the early solo work Canzona, reworking until it became a new piece “characterized by a great sense of peace and a cohesive form”.

CD ECM Records Craig Taborn Trio: Chants

2012

Craig Taborn - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Gerald Cleaver - tobe

The songs on Craig Taborn Trio’s latest CD, ‘Chants’, have titles, but they don’t have borders, or ordinary structures, or typical narrative flow. The songs are positively shimmering, immaculately detailed, prismatic and very improvisational. But they don’t live quickly or land easily; they flutter and spiral, bend and float, and constantly surprise. [...] You hear strains of Keith Jarrett, Paul Bley’s rambles and Paul Motian’s trios, even the urgency and repetition of some electronic music, but ‘Chant’ is original to its core. And lovely as in the lulaby like stillness of ‘In Chant’ Taborn’s stately, sad acoustic piano lines wrapping around double bassist Thomas Morgan’s lyrical lines and Gerald Cleaver’s sizzling brush strokes.

Camerata Romeu, dirijor Zenaida Romeu
The brilliant, kaleidoscopic Brazilian composer Egberto Gismonti has made his first album for ECM in 12 years, Saudações. It’s a double-exposure of where he is now. The first disc presents an orchestral piece… The second is totally different: an hour-plus of stunning guitar duets on original music with his son, Alexandre Gismonti. … This is Mr. Gismonti’s original style, rigorous, percussive, deep, harmony-rich, half of it tied to Brazilian popular music and the dance impulse, all of it singable. CD ECM Records Giovanni Guidi: This Is The Day

2015

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joao Lobo - tobe

The Giovanni Guidi Trio plays jazz of uncommon originality and reflective depth. On their second ECM album, Italian pianist Guidi, US bassist Morgan, and Portuguese drummer Lobo continue the work begun on the 2011 recording City of Broken Dreams, with pensive, abstract ballads which shimmer with inner tension. Each of the players has a strong sense for the dialectics of sound and silence. The repertoire is mostly from Guidi’s pen, but also includes the standard “I’m Through with Love”, Cuban songwriter Osvaldo Farrés’ “Quizás, quizás, quizás” (familiar to jazz listeners through, above all, Nat King Cole’s version), and “Baiiia” by João Lobo.

CD ECM Records Giovanni Guidi: City Of Broken Dreams

2013

Giovanni Guidi - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Joao Lobo - tobe

Pianist Giovanni Guidi (born 1985), is one of the most outstanding musicians to have emerged from the ranks of Italian jazz in the last decade and has already made his presence felt on Enrico Rava’s “Tribe” and “On The Dancefloor” albums. Rava praises both Guidi’s “limitless curiosity” as an improviser and his “relentless refinement” of touch and musical taste, and the pianist continually proves that those qualities are not opposites. His first leader date for ECM is a glowing collection of self-penned tunes, simultaneously inner-directed and creatively daring, with many adroit exchanges between the musicians and plenty of space given also to bassist Thomas Morgan, whose role in the Guidi Trio is perhaps analogous to Scott LaFaro’s in the Evans Trio. Portuguese drummer João Lobo is another highly original musician, poetically shading the music with a delicate tracery of cymbals.
