CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal, Hilliard Ensemble: Melodic Warrior

2009. Interpreti: Terje Rypdal, The Hilliard Ensemble, Bruckner Orchester Linz, ( dirijor Dennis Russell Davies ), Wroclaw Philharmonic Orchestra ( dirijor Sebastian Perloswski )

There’s nothing understated to guitarist Terje rypdal’s orchestral collaboration with the Hilliard Ensemble, recorded in concert in 2003, with the Bruckner Orchester Linz. Rypdal’s guitar takes the lead role as a mythological Native-American warrior flitting shadow-like through the landscape, the Hilliards provide narrative and the orchestra delivers thunder and calm. Rypdal’s writing, like his playing, is heavily referenced, but the ambitious piece hangs together well and the voices are lovely.[ Mike Hobart, Financial Times ]

CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal: If Mountains Could Sing

1994 :
Terje Rypdal chitara electrica
Bjorn Kjellemyr - bas
Audun Kleive - tobe
Terje Tonnesen - vioara
Lars Anders Tomter - viola
Oystein Birkeland - violoncel
Christian Eggen - dirijor

"I start this review where I might end it, by marking If Mountains Could Sing as one of Terje Rypdal’s finest achievements. Marrying the Norwegian guitarist’s penchant for magnesium fire with his comparable passion for classical textures, this record gives us the clearest intersection of his split idiomatic personality since Descendre." CD ECM Records Terje Rypdal: Lux Aeterna

Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta
Iver Kleive - orga
Ashild Stubo Gundersen - soprana
Bergen Chamber Ensemble, dirijor Kiell Seim

The guitarist Terje Rypdal is best known as a leading light of the jazz avant-garde, but his path has increasingly taken him into the realms of classical composition. His five-movement Lux Aeterna, recorded live at the Molde Jazz Festival, is a fascinating fusion of typically Nordic orchestral timbres and a trio of soloists – trumpet, organ and Rypdal himself on guitar – adding atmospheric asides. Terje Rypdal - electric guitar, keyboard, synthesizer
Palle Mikkelborg - trumpet, fluegelhorn, RMI, tac piano, ring modulator
Sveinung Hovensjo - basses
Jon Christensen - drums, percussion

Terje Rypdal’s Waves (recorded 1977) announced the beginning of the Norwegian guitarist’s association with Danish trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg, which continues to this day. The album also introduced one of Terje’s most enduringly popular pieces, “Per Ulv.” “Rypdal’s album is a series of sonic excursions ranging from the expressionist to the impressionist…” wrote Record World. “Rypdal’s guitar and Mikkelborg’s trumpet are well-matched, with Manfred Eicher’s typically superb production putting it all in focus.”

CD ECM Records John Surman / Terje Rypdal: Nordic Quartet

John Surman - saxofoane, clarinet, bas clarinet
Karin Krog - voce
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Vigleik Storaas - pian

Nordic Quartet bonds an unconventional roster of musicians and conceptual approaches. John Surman reaches into his usual toolkit, favoring the lower range, while vocalist Karin Krog sews her Sheila Jordan-like vibrato into Terje Rypdal’s electric swoons and pianist Vigleik Storaas’s intimate embraces. CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian: Hindemith Sonatas

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Simply overflowing with musical brilliance, it remains one of the finest examples of what the viola is capable of. Kim Kashkashian’s technique and passion are almost palpable and one can only marvel at the humble respect she brings to both. The viola doesn’t simply exist somewhere between violin and cello, forever doomed to be second rate to both. It is, rather, an utterly dynamic and rich musical object, and the ways in which Hindemith unravels its subtler intonations in these sonatas is nothing short of monumental. Every chapter tells us something new, until the linguistic possibilities of the music represented in this eclectic set are exhausted. [ ecmreviews ]

Bose Zellen ( For Piano And Orchestra )
Still ( For Viola And Chamber Orchestra )
Madhares ( String Qartet No. 3 )

Larcher is an unpredictable, freethinking composer, who has set aside the modernist strictures that have long governed Central European music. … “Böse Zellen” is riveting from start to finish – a sweat-inducing drama in instrumental form. All the works receive immaculate, strongly felt performances. [ Alex Ross, The New Yorker ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Asturiana - Songs From Spain And Argentina

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Manuel De Falla, Enrique Granados, Carlos Guastavino, Alberto Ginastera, Carlos Lopez Buchardo

No higher compliment could be paid to Kashkashian’s playing of Spanish songs – art songs, but ones very close to their folk-song roots – than that it almost sounds as if she is singing. Or, rather, that the tone of her viola occasionally takes on the overtones of a human voice. … Throughout, Levin’s accompanying is unfailingly sensitive. His deep intellectual investment allows him to go as deep into the music as Kashkashian does. [ Marc Geelhoed, Time Out Chicago ]

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Lera Auerbach - pian

Dimitri Shostakovich: 24 Preludes Op. 34
Lera Auerbach: Arcanum - Sonata For Viola And Piano

Auerbach’s duo version of Shostakovich’s Op. 34 Piano Preludes — a cycle of 24 in all the major and minor keys, on the models of Bach and Chopin — is a wizardly reimagining of its source, and the performance here by her and violist Kim Kashkashian seems to channel the earlier composer’s distinctive sound world. […] As performers, Kashkashian and Auerbach make a superb team, playing with urgency and finely tuned balance. [ Joshua Kosman, San Francisco Chronicle ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian - Giya Kancheli, Alfred Schnittke

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Orchester der Beethovenhalle Bonn

This is a profoundly emotional album, by turns confrontational and mournfully resplendent. Kashkashian brings her usual heartrending strength to even the subtlest gestures and is never afraid to betray the fragility of her pitch. The orchestras, under the direction of Dennis Russell Davies, are forces to be reckoned with that scintillate in a slightly distanced mix. A benchmark recording in all respects. [ ecm reviews ]

Linda Bouchard: Pourtinade

Dimitri Shostakovich: Sonata For Violion And Piano, Op. 147

Kim Kashkashian’s third disc for ECM is a curiously mixed bag. Although the liner notes give some delightful anecdotes and insider’s information, I am torn over how much said information enriches my experience of the whole. For example, Kashkashian points to the percussiveness of Shotakovich’s piano writing in his Sonata for Viola and Piano op. 147 as justification for the two companion pieces scored for “actual” percussion and viola. To be sure, this is a fascinating connection, though one that perhaps only the performers can intuit with such immediacy. Either way, the knowledge does guide my listening in new directions and pushes me to burrow into the music wholeheartedly. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin - Brahms: Sonaten Fur Viola Und Klavier

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Johannes Brahms :
Sonate Fur Viola Und Klavier Es-Dur, Op. 120/2
Sonate Fur Viola Und Klavier F-Moll, Op. 120/1

'Brahms' third-to-last works, these sonatas are astonishing pieces looking back to the classical-romantic vocabulary he exploited and refined so fully while prophesying the structural and sonic freedom of 20th century modernism. These extraordinarily effortless and seamless works teem with emotion that is voluptuously abundant yet subsumed to the demands of a melodic structure that itself partakes of a sublime futurity. Listen, then listen again to grasp that one movement is a waltz, another a theme and variations, a third based on a country dance. Kashkashian and Levin perform with ravishing and egoless attention; they and their instruments seem to become the music.' [ Fredric Koepel, The Commercial Appeal ]

CD ECM Records Giya Kancheli: Caris Mere

Eduard Brunner - clarinet
Maacha Deubner - soprana
Kim Kashkashian - viola
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran
Vasiko Tevdorashvili - voce
Stuttgarter Kammerorchester, dirijeaza Dennis Russell Davies

Giya Kancheli:
- Midday Prayers
- Caris Mere
- Night Prayers

Kronos Quartet fans will recognize the final piece, Night Prayers, from their album of the same name. This extended version (for saxophone and string orchestra) begins with very deep voices, resounding from the liminal realm that is tape, accentuated by a knotty fringe of strings. As saxophonist Jan Garbarek pierces the gloom with his light, the piece flaps its thematic shutters like a quiet storm. Generally a very meditative journey, though not without its moments of rapture, Night Prayers is a captivating highpoint of Kancheli’s spiral of sound. Jan Garbarek gives due respect to the music at hand, and makes the most of a brief improvisational window in an otherwise precisely notated architecture. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Meredith Monk: Songs Of Ascension

Meredith Monk Ensemble
Todd Reynolds Quartet
The M6
Montclair State University Singers
Heather J. Buchanan Conductor
Meredith Monk - voce, Shruti Box

Voices and instruments are paired and balanced against each other to an extent rare in her music. Inspirations for the work included the Song of Ascents, a group of psalms said to have been sung during pilgrimages, and a timely invitation to perform at an 8-story tower designed by visual artist Ann Hamilton. “Songs of Ascension” finds Monk playing with the musical, sonic, metaphysical and literal connotations of upward movement. “If Monk is seeking a place in the classical firmament, classical music has much to learn from her.” - [ Alex Ross, The New Yorker ]

CD ECM Records Meredith Monk: Book Of Days

Meredith Monk Ensemble :
Meredith Monk - voce, claviaturi
Naaz Hosseini - voce, vioara
Robert Een - voce, violoncel
Andrea Goodman - voce
Nicky Paraiso - voce
Ching Gonzalez - voce
Timothy Sawyer - voce
Johanna Arnold - voce
Joan Barber - voce
John Eppler - voce
Wayne Hankin - voce, instrumente de suflat
Toby Newman - voce
Nurit Tilles - pian, claviaturi, Hammered Dulcimer

The markedly instrumental approach to the human voice embodied by this ensemble lends itself beautifully to the subject matter at hand. In choosing to eschew words entirely, Monk peers more deeply into the oracular interior of her music. Relying on nascent phonemes such as “na” and “la” in lieu of recognizable vocabularies, she complicates the linearity of her effected nostalgia. Book of Days is all the more haunting for reducing that nostalgia to a liquid state and scooping up as much of it as possible before it seeps out of sight through those very cracks where her music is born. The appearance of words in Meredith Monk’s work can be rather jolting, as it is so easy for one to get used to the lack of semantic footholds. Like few other vocalists (Elizabeth Fraser comes to mind), Monk grinds the surface of what is being conveyed to such a fine patina that quantifiable meaning is often no longer necessary. Her vocal ramblings are mimetic, purposeful. Monk ably switches between registers and modes with lightning precision, creating a veritable conversation in and through a single body, gazing in multiple directions in the same breath.

Do You Be is a Meredith Monk hodgepodge culled from an assortment of operas and theater pieces. As such, it contains more in the way of quantifiable semantics. [ ecm reviews ]

CD ECM Records Meredith Monk: Piano Songs

Meredith Monk
Bruce Brubaker - pian
Ursula Oppens - pian

Celebrating Meredith Monk as composer, these Piano Songs give us a world at once playful and earnest. Written or derived from work composed between 1971 and 2006, the pieces inhabit Monk’s unique universe, as played by two of new music’s most distinguished interpreters, pianists Ursula Oppens and Bruce Brubaker.

These pieces are ‘songs’ because they have strong roots in Monk’s pieces for voice, and because they are direct, specific, and imagistic. Meredith Monk on composing for two pianos: “I delved into different relationships and possibilities between them; material passed back and forth, dialogues, interlocking phrases, shifts of figure and ground. In some pieces, I emphasized the individuality of each piano, writing for one player as the ‘singer’, the other as the ‘accompaniment’; in other pieces I wanted the two pianos to make one large sound.

CD ECM Records Hildegard von Bingen / Ensemble Belcanto: Ordo Virtutum

Ensemble Belcanto :
Andrea Baader - soprana
Edith Murasov - soprana
Rica Rauch - alto
Martina Scharstein - soprana
Benjamin Cromme
Lilith Reid
Selina Drews soprana
Dietburg Spohr mezzosoprana

This is the second New Series album to feature the Ensemble Belcanto. Where its predecessor focused on contemporary composition, this new disc looks at Hildegard of Bingen’s Ordo Virtutum, writtern around 1150 and generally considered the first large-scale musical work beyond the prescribed form of the Mass liturgy. In her creative interpretation, Belcanto leader Dietburg Spohr waives claims to ‘objective’ historical literalness. Instead, she and her fellow singers encounter the work as if it were written specifically for the Ensemble Belcanto: “We sought to free Hildegard from mystical-esoteric associations and to emphasize the work of an emancipated woman and composer.”

Momo Kodama - pian

Maurice Ravel - Miroirs
Toru Takemitsu - Rain Tree Sketch
Olivier Messiaen - La Fauvette Des Jardins

Kodama’s impeccable technique and facility for crystalline sounds makes for a mesmerizing program. ‘Miroirs’, the highlight of the program, is awash in rich colors, poised and graceful. Two other rarely performed works round out the program. ‘Rain Tree Sketch’ is a short, but lovely treat, and Messiaen’s trademark birdcalls thread through ‘La Fauvette Des Jardins’. Impressive.
