Gyorgy Kurtag: Kafka-Fragmente, Op. 24

The hour-long Kafka-Fragments, completed in 1986, is his biggest work to date: it’s a characteristic cycle of 40 tiny movements, scored for soprano voice and violin, that adds up to something far greater than the sum of its parts. The text is a mosaic of quotations from Kafka’s writings, diaries and letters. The cycle is divided into four parts, articulated by the two longest movements; they draw a huge range of expression from soprano Juliane Banse and violinist András Keller. Banse’s nuances of vocal colouring are wonderfully subtle, while Keller can conjure up huge intensity from a single musical gesture. Yet Kurtág's abandonment of the standard quartet form -- a major consideration in the music of his predecessors -- permits him to freely explore timbres and techniques and for their own sakes, in lieu of thematic development and traditional structures. Both the first and second string quartets by the Lebanese-born Armenian composer Tigran Mansurian are predominantly slow and mournful pieces, each completed in 1984 and written in memory of a recently dead friend. The language is direct, but Mansurian is not of any formulaic minimalist school. Rather, his structures are built on a richness of harmony and melodic expression that allies him to late Beethoven. Both works – each cast in three movements – and the eloquent and dark single movement Testament … are played with miraculously sustained poise by the Rosamunde Quartet. Tigran Mansurian has created a Requiem dedicated to the memory of the victims of the Armenian Genocide that occurred in Turkey from 1915 to 1917. Co-commissioned by the Munich Chamber Orchestra and the RIAS Choir Berlin, Mansurian’s Requiem reconciles the sound and sensibility of his country’s traditions with those of Western practices, the combination of ancient Armenian religious and secular music with the Latin Requiem text “giving rise to something unexpected,” the composer says. This is profoundly moving contemporary composition, illuminated by the “glow of Armenian modality,” as Paul Griffiths puts it in his booklet essay. The work is a milestone for Mansurian, widely acknowledged as Armenia’s greatest composer. The Los Angeles Times has described his music as that “in which deep cultural pain is quieted through an eerily calm, heart-wrenching beauty.”

A solo interpretation of Matti Caspi’s “My Second Childhood” opens the curtain on a programme of characteristically thoughtful Maestro originals, each one with a story to tell. “Hearing the Shai Maestro Trio is like awakening to a new world”, All About Jazz has suggested.

A trumpet/piano duo is a tough call, but the two operate with a charismatic delicacy and subtle force. The centrepiece is a largely improvised seven-part suite dedicated to Indian visual artist Nasreen Mohamedi. Smith’s tone and phrasing often reflect mid-period Miles Davis, but he blends free jazz into those resources with a unique poetic focus. Long high squeals and tumbling unfold over Iyer’s humming electronics, a bright brass fanfare soars over a chordal rumble, and a lamenting muted-trumpet descent invokes ‘Sketches of Spain’. Iyer mostly functions as a discreet foil, but this intimate conversation swells from interesting to enthralling as it unfolds. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

Gesualdo was wealthy enough that he never had to depend on a patron; he could therefore write whatever he pleased, in whatever, far-out (to this day), experimental style he chose. His Tenebrae Responsoria are particularly thorny--they're a part of the religious service in which the church's candles are extinguished one at a time until the congregation is sitting in darkness--and Gesualdo's music is incredibly deep and troubling. And, I might add, magnificent. The Hilliards perform them ideally, with great technical accuracy, a sense of the weightiness of the text and music, and simply beautiful sound. American composer Stephen Hartke, born in 1952, deserves to be heard in the UK and beyond. His postmodern scores, drawing deep from the well of plainsong and also inspired by poetic and visual imagery, are strikingly original, as this revelatory disc from ECM proves from the off. Tituli changes the mood with lightning speed, moving from monkish incantations to wild outbursts and back again. The seven-movement work for male voices, violin and percussion sets ancient Roman texts in Old Latin, including shop signs and epitaphs. Cathedral in the Thrashing Rain translates Japanese poet Takamura Kotaro’s evocative impressions of Notre Dame Cathedral in Paris into music that you can almost touch and smell. Alfred Schnittke: Symphony No. 9
Alexander Raskatov: Nunc Dimittis - In Memoriam Alfred Schnittke

Composed shortly before his death in 1998, Schnittke’s ultimate symphony – actually his very last work – is a “Ninth” in a most unusual sense: Put down with a shaky left hand by an artist who had survived four strokes and was laterally debilitated, it is an impressive triumph of spiritual energy over physical constraints. The composer’s widow Irina treated the barely-legible manuscript as a testament and was long doubtful whom to entrust with the difficult task of deciphering and reconstructing the highly expressive three movements for large orchestra (some 38 minutes of music). She finally settled on Moscow-born Alexander Raskatov, who not only provided a thorough score but, convinced that Schnittke had intended to write a fourth movement, also developed the idea to add an independent epilogue, the “Nunc Dimitis” (“Lord, let thy servant now depart into thy promis'd rest”) for mezzo soprano, vocal quartett and orchestra. It is based on the famous text by orthodox monk Starets Siluan and on verses by Joseph Brodsky, Schnittke’s favourite poet.
