CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek / Ustad Fateh Ali Khan: Ragas and Sagas

1990
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Ustad Fateh Ali Khan - voce
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla
Ustad Nazim Ali Khan - sarangi
Deepika Thathaal - voce
Manu Katche - tobe

ecmreviews : "With Ragas and Sagas, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek surely turned not a few heads by collaborating with legendary Pakistani vocalist Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (not to be confused with Nusrat). With attuned support from sarangi, backing vocals, tabla, and a fairly young Manu Katche, this album fulfills every promise it makes on the cover alone.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Rites

1998
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, percutie, sintetizatoare
Rainer Bruninghaus - claviaturi
Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Marilyn Mazur - percutie
Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra ( dirijor Jansug Kakhidze )
Bugge Wesseltoft - claviaturi, acordeon, sintetizatoare

Jan Garbarek's powerful new double-album is a magnum opus, and well-titled. 'Rites' suggests initiations, rituals, the archaic, the magical, but also 'rites of passage', and the Norwegian saxophonist reflects, in his choice of material, upon pivotal episodes and influences in his own life and those of his associates.

Marilyn Mazur -marimba, vibrafon, diverse instrumente de percutie
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor, fluier

An album of solos and intimate duos with, as its starting point, the sound of Marilyn Mazur’s percussion instruments, collected from all over the world – each of them allowed to “speak” with its own voice – either alone or in dialogue with Jan Garbarek’s saxophones.

ecmreviews.com:
"Garbarek’s lines are as smooth as the jet stream in the folk tale that is “He Comes From The North.” The immediately recognizable berimbau of Vasconcelos lifts this piece to even greater heights of emotive power. An inauguration ceremony in sound, this blissful opener holds attention for every second of its fourteen-minute expanse.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: All Those Born With Wings

1987
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane, flaut, electronice, percutie

Un album solo, introspectiv - piesa trei ii este dedicata lui Andrey Tarkovsky ( decedat in 1986 )

ecmreviews : As one of ECM’s most passionate and prolific contributors, Jan Garbarek has left us with a varicolored, sometimes watery, archive. For All Those Born With Wings, the Norwegian saxophonist went solo, painting an evocative album of relic-laden vistas. The result is a six-part session filled with a variety of instruments and tastes. The hammered dulcimer is a welcome sound to the Garbarek palette, and is used tastefully in the 1st Part, where Garbarek’s saxophone refracts into a flock of large-winged birds. An army of chants floods the 2nd Part, as martial drums resound like the introductory sequence of a classic martial arts film.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Miroslav Vitous, Peter Erskine: Star

1991
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Miroslav Vitous - contrabas
Peter Erskine - tobe

ecmreviews.com:
"StAR is yet another classic from a fertile period for Jan Garbarek. Clothed in some of Barbara Wojirsch’s most striking typography, it holds an intimate portrait of one of ECM’s profoundest artists.

Characteristic trails fade in the title track like infant spiders’ webs as bassist Miroslav Vitous dances a solemn dance. Garbarek unlocks a doorway in the sky, where the only keyhole is a star, before teleporting back to earth to find his roots in “Jumper.”

Gustavsen’s band does all the things you would expect an ECM label trio to do – pellucid, contemplative melodies ebb and flow over shimmering cymbals and brushed drums – but they do more besides. There are hints of gospel, the blues and those warm folksy melodies that Keith Jarrett wrote around the time of My Song. [ John Bungey, The Times ]

CD ECM Records Gary Peacock / Marilyn Crispell: Azure

2011

Gary Peacock - contrabas
Marilyn Crispell - pian

“Azure” features beautiful duets by two great improvisers whose compatibility was proven long ago. Gary Peacock and Marilyn Crispell made outstanding music together in Marilyn’s trio with the late Paul Motian, on ECM albums including “Nothing ever was, anyway” and “Amaryllis”, but their duo project also has an extensive history, until now undocumented on disc.

CD ECM Records Gary Peacock Trio: Tangents

2017

Gary Peacock - contrabas
Marc Copland - pian
Joey Baron - tobe

Some of Gary Peacock’s finest music has been made in piano trios. Early in his musical life, Peacock established a fresh role for the bass as an independent melodic voice, a concept carried forward in the history-making groups he’s played with – from Paul Bley’s Bill Evans’s trios to Keith Jarrett’s. As a bandleader he has also been influential: Tangents is the second release from the great bassist’s trio with Marc Copland and Joey Baron and draws on years of shared playing in diverse contexts. All three band members contribute compositions, Peacock’s including “December Greenwings”, revisiting a piece Gary introduced on his ECM recording December Poems. Repertoire includes five tunes from Peacock, two from Baron, one from Copland, and an outstanding group improvisation, “Empty Forest”. The trio also plays Miles Davis’s “Blue In Green” and, perhaps surprisingly, Alex North’s theme for the film Spartacus, which also proves a fine vehicle for improvising.

Stephan Micus - Bagana, Tibetan Chimes, Kyeezee, Sho, Voice, Maung, Tin Whistle, Bavarian Zither, Thai Singing Bowl, Dilruba, Nay, Bagana, Tibetan Cymbals, Dondon, Bowed Bagana, Balinese Gongs, Burmese Gongs

Both a continuation and a departure from earlier work, “Life” sets to music an old Zen koan, or teaching story, on “the meaning of life”. Stephan Micus sings the text in Japanese and embodies the koan’s multi-layered meanings in his composition, scored for a characteristically wide range of ethnic/traditional instruments – from the Ethiopian bagana to the Irish tin whistle.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Bold As Light

2010

Stephan Micus - Raj Nplaim, Bass Zither, Chord Zither, Bavarian Zither, Nohkan, Sho, Voice, Kalimba, Shakuhachi, Sinding

“The idea of sitting down at a table and making a composition on paper is totally foreign to me. To come up with a piece of music, I have to make the sound myself, have the instruments in my hands.”

Micus’ three main sound protagonists in “Bold As Light” are the raj nplaim (a free-reed pipe made of bamboo) from Laos, the nohkan (a bamboo flute) from Japan, and the many male voices, which, of course, are all sung by Micus himself. He drew inspiration for the multipart vocals from the intriguing polyphonic singing of Georgia and Bulgaria, which since the early Middle Ages has shaped the style of everyday singing as well as the liturgy of the Orthodox Church. On the very last track, the interwoven vocals make way for the Japanese shō (mouth organ), thus joining different aural worlds in a total sound whose divergent timbres have surprisingly much in common.

CD ECM Records Gianluigi Trovesi All' Opera: Parfumo Di Violetta

2008

Gianluigi Trovesi - saxofon alto, clarinet
Marco Remondini - violoncel, electronice
Stefano Bertoli - tobe, percutie
Filarmonica Mousiké , dirijor Savino Acquaviva
Fabio Brignoli - flugelhorn

Gianluigi Trovesi, wild-haired Italian jazz clarinettist, creates a turbo-charged version of a traditional Italian town band to play a medley of quirkily arranged Italian opera tunes. It includes some of Rossini’s and Verdi’s greatest hits, garlanded with Trovesi’s husky solos, plus foot-tapping Baroque dances. It’s funny, sentimental and charming.

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava: On The Dance Floor

2011

Enrico Rava - trompeta

+ PM Jazz Lab, Andrea Tofanelli, Claudio Corvini, Mauro Ottolini, Daniele Tittarelli, Dan Kinzelman, Franz Bazzani, Giovanni Guidi, Dario Deidda, Marcello Giannini, Zeno de Rossi, Ernesto Lopez Maturell

It was only after Michael Jackson’s death that Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava gradually became aware that he had for many years been ignoring, in his words, “one of the great protagonists of 20th century music and dance. A total artist. A perfectionist. A genius. I felt the need to delve more deeply into Michael’s world. There was only one way to do that: play his songs.” Thus this live album, recorded at the Rome Auditorium with the Parco della Musica Jazz Lab. Enrico’s trumpet is at its most extroverted here, vaulting above the spirited arrangements by Mauro Ottolini. Michael Jackson’s protean pop songs have never been heard quite like this. Rava is currently playing European festivals with this programme.

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Gianluca Petrella - trombon
Andrea Pozza - pian
Rosario Bonaccorso - contrabas
Roberto Gatto - tobe

One of the most charismatic of jazz musicians, Enrico Rava has truly hit a purple patch in his career – he’s got a great band, he’s with the best label in the world and he’s making the finest music of a long, distinguished career. … This music will make you feel good about the world, maybe because it gives voice to all those values that however downtrodden won’t go away. I could tell you that this track is ballad, that one uptempo and this one has a Latin feel. But it deserves better than that. Simply, they should distil this, bottle it and serve it everywhere. A wizard and a true star. [ Duncan Heining, Jazzwise ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett: Sunbear Concerts

1976

Keith Jarrett - pian

AllMusic: "This gargantuan package -- a ten-LP set now compressed into a chunky six-CD box -- once was derided as the ultimate ego trip, probably by many who didn't take the time to hear it all. You have to go back to Art Tatum's solo records for Norman Granz in the '50s to find another large single outpouring of solo jazz piano like this, all of it improvised on the wing before five Japanese audiences in Kyoto, Osaka, Nagoya, Tokyo, and Sapporo. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden: Last Dance

2007

Keith Jarrett - pian
Charlie Haden - contrabas

All of which made Jasmine (ECM, 2010) a release worth celebrating. Recorded at Jarrett's home (in his Cavelight Studio), it was an intimate conversation between two old friends—Jarrett and Haden—who'd not recorded together in over three decades, and who were brought together when the pianist participated in Reto Cardiff's film about the bassist, Rambling Boy (2009).

Some things are never lost, and if Jasmine proved anything, it's that the chemistry shared by Jarrett and Haden may have been on hiatus for 30 years, but was no less potent, no less profound, when they found themselves recording a series of standards at Jarrett's home with no rehearsals barring a few quick run-throughs of the changes. The collaboration must have been a fruitful one, because Last Dance comes from those same sessions, another full 76 minutes of music comprised, once again, of songs culled from jazz standards and the Great American Songbook. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: My Foolish Heart

2001

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

"My Foolish Heart may just be, between Still Live and Somewhere, the missing piece of the Keith Jarrett Trio’s Triforce. Recorded live in Montreux in July of 2001, it shows the trio—both in general and this specific—in brightest light. The bounce of “Four” kicks things off with so much panache that anyone even thinking of laying fingers to keyboard might just want to crawl into a hovel and listen in awe. The tune is, of course, by Miles Davis and draws lines of history back to Jarrett’s association with the Prince of Darkness, flipping that nickname into an exercise in luminescence. The feeling of togetherness practically shouts its decades of experience from the rooftops and calls any who will listen in ecstatic gathering. Peacock almost flies off the handle from all the excitation, but reins in his enthusiasm just enough to build his first solo of the night with architectural integrity. DeJohnette, too, revs the engine a few times without losing traction. [ ecmreviews ]
