CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Khomsa

Septembrie 1994

Anouar Brahem - oud
Richard Galliano - acordeon
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean Marc Larch - saxofon sopran
Bechir Selmi - vioara
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

"Anouar Brahem’s third leader date for ECM explores the oud player’s incidental music for Tunisian film and theatre as interpreted by a shifting nexus of musicians, new and old alike. His compositional side takes precedence this time around, for it is accordionist Richard Galliano who lights the foreground with “Comme un depart” and hardly recedes until “Des rayons et des ombres,” the latter a superbly jazzy romp with Palle Danielsson and Jon Christensen. Bassist and drummer, respectively, add buoyancy to “E la nave va” and “Aïn ghazel,” culminating in the shadow of Jean-Marc Larché’s soprano for the title track.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: My Foolish Heart

2017

Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

In his dedication to the acoustic instrument, and his exploration of the borders of both classical and jazz, Ralph Towner is effectively the guitarist equivalent of Keith Jarrett: there’s a calm, reflective quality, allied to an intense involvement, about both players’ solo work, of which ‘My Foolish Heart’ may be Towner’s best since his sublime 1973 debut ‘Diary’. CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: AWASE

2018
Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, saxofon alto
Thomy Jordi - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe

Bärtsch speaks of a new-found freedom and flexibility in the approach to the material, with “greater transparency, more interaction, more joy in every performance”. The freedom here extends to revisiting earlier Bärtsch modules alongside new compositions including, for the first time on a Ronin record, a piece by reedman Sha. “We’ve spent a long time working on the new repertoire, really checking out and fine tuning all the details.”

Awase, a term from Aikido, means “moving together” in the sense of matching energies, a fitting metaphor for the dynamic precision, tessellated grooves and balletic minimalism of Ronin today. In the old band, Bärtsch often chose to present Björn Meyer’s flamboyant 6-string bass as a lead instrument. Thomy Jordi’s 4-string bass guitar tends to be deployed within the fabric of the pieces, creatively fulfilling a more traditional bass function and locking in with Kaspar Rast’s powerful drums. With Bärtsch also scaling back his own solo playing, listeners are encouraged to hear the whole music and its layered, shifting approach to interaction in new ways.

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Ronin: Stoa

2006

Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet, alto saxofon
Bjorn Meyer - bas
Kaspar Rast - tobe
Andi Pupato - percutie

This is music that throbs with a pulsating dynamism that’s almost hypnotic. … Woven into the rhythmic tapestry is startling imagery that grows from simple beginnings – the way he exploits a single note using space and dynamics in the introduction of “Modul 36” gradually evolves into a musical journey that sweeps you along with its deft twists and turns. …

The elements of simplicity and purity are both impressive in their momentary effect but they are also musical gestures that reveal their secrets reluctantly. Bärtsch’s mysterious music will be around for a lot longer than the quick fix that majority taste seems to clamour for.

CD ECM Records Nik Bartsch's Mobile: Continuum

2016
Nik Bartsch - pian
Sha - bas clarinet, contrabas clarinet
Kaspar Rast - tobe, percutie
Nicolas Stocker - tobe, percutie
Etienne Abelin - vioara
Ola Sendecki - vioara
David Schnee - viola
Solme Hong - violoncel
Ambrosius Huber - violoncel

Few musicians have continued to hone a concept as singularly unique and instantly recognizable, irrespective of context, as that being explored by Swiss pianist Nik Bärtsch since he first formed Mobile with Don Li, Kaspar Rast and Mats Eser in 1997. First emerging on record in 2001 with Ritual Groove Music (Self-Released, reissued Ronin Rhythm, 2006), Bärtsch has evolved three very different contexts with which to explore the confluence of trance-inducing minimalist elements with rigorous, ritualistic compositional constructs, a deep interest in Japanese culture and other musical touchstones. While all three contexts—in addition to the all-acoustic Mobile, Bärtsch has performed and recorded as a solo pianist, as well as with the more elastic and jazz/funk-centric Ronin—share common DNA-level elements, each context is also different: refracting Bärtsch's underlying architectures through a series of disparate prisms.

2007

Tord Gustavsen - pian
Harald Johnson - contrabas

Gustavsen’s tunes are hypnotically strong, and the integration of bass and drums in his regular trio is total. … It’s possible for even hardcore jazzers to get the point about Tord Gustavsen. This one just did. [ John Fordham, The Guardian ]

CD ECM Records Gary Peacock: Tales Of Another

1977

Gary Peacock - contrabas
Keith Jarrett - pian
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

"The grouping on this album represents a milestone in ECM outfits, persevering to the present day as it has in the form of Keith Jarrett’s mighty standards trio. Though a far cry from the ecstatic overloads honed over years of synergy and touring, there is an almost naïve charm to this effort and the evenhanded musicianship that sustains it. Each of these six “tales” begins in loveliness. Piano and bass bring the most urgency to bear, as in the gorgeous “Vignette,” in which Peacock gets his first lilting solo, and its follow-up, “Tone Field.” Both start off slow and sure, with DeJohnette giving the barest hint of traction and Jarrett biting deeply into fractured themes.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie / Dave Holland / Jack DeJohnette: Gateway 2

1977
Gateway:
John Abercrombie - chitara, mandolina electrica
Dave Holland - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe, pian

In this era of tawdry sequels, it’s almost difficult to believe that John Abercrombie, Dave Holland, and Jack DeJohnette could have surpassed the profundity of 1975’s seminal Gateway. I say “almost” only because each member of this dream trio has yet to let this committed listener down and always comes to the studio bearing a basket overflowing with fresh ideas. Not only do the results of this 1978 follow-up not disappoint, they ascend into their own category. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Anat Fort Trio + Gianluigi Trovesi: Birdwatching

2016

Anat Fort - pian
Gary Wang - contrabas
Roland Schneider - tobe
Gianluigi Trovesi - clarinet alto

Listening to this album for the first time, I was slightly thrown by the alto clarinet. Not a familiar voice like the soprano or bass clarinet, hearing over the course of full album took a little time to fully appreciate the range and nuances of the instrument, and assimilate Trovesi's musical language and tone. Playing with a bitter sweet sound, the clarinettist will colour and manipulate his sound, interpreting the written score and reacting to the rhythm section as if he too were a regular fixture of the ensemble. […] Anat is not one to wear her heart on her sleeve, but that does not lessen the emotional content of her music. Close listening reveals a sharp mind at work with each idea presented without any excess baggage, just lean and lithe lines that make their meaning felt succinctly before moving on. […] A captivating set that reveals an original voice continuing to grow. It will be interesting to hear how the Anat Fort Trio continue their journey, and I for one would relish the prospect of a solo album from this gifted enthralling pianist. [ Nick Lea, Jazz Views ]

CD ECM Records Mark Turner, Ethan Iverson: Temporary Kings

2018

Mark Turner - saxofon tenor
Ethan Iverson - pian

With Temporary Kings two of the most distinct voices on today’s jazz scene present their debut on record as a duo: Engaging in inspired dialogue Mark Turner and Ethan Iverson here explore aesthetic common ground in the atmosphere of a modernist chamber music-like setting at the Auditorio Stelio Molo RSI, Lugano. The saxophonist and the pianist had begun their association in the Billy Hart Quartet, where the two players featured sympathetically on two ECM albums by that band. The new duo album now contains six originals by Iverson (among them the nostalgic solo tune “Yesterday’s Bouquet”) and two by Turner (including “Myron’s World,” which has acquired near-classic status among contemporary jazz players). There’s an off-kilter blues (“Unclaimed Freight”) and a strikingly melodic, almost Ravelian opening track dedicated to the town where the album was recorded under ideal sonic conditions (“Lugano”), plus an interpretation of Warne Marsh’s playfully serpentine “Dixie’s Dilemma.”

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava Quintet: The Words And The Days

2007

Enrico Rava - trompeta
Gianluca Petrella - trombon
Andrea Pozza - pian
Rosario Bonaccorso - contrabas
Roberto Gatto - tobe

One of the most charismatic of jazz musicians, Enrico Rava has truly hit a purple patch in his career – he’s got a great band, he’s with the best label in the world and he’s making the finest music of a long, distinguished career. … This music will make you feel good about the world, maybe because it gives voice to all those values that however downtrodden won’t go away. I could tell you that this track is ballad, that one uptempo and this one has a Latin feel. But it deserves better than that. Simply, they should distil this, bottle it and serve it everywhere. A wizard and a true star. [ Duncan Heining, Jazzwise ]

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Yesterdays

2001

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic (Thom Jurek): "Yesterdays is the third title ECM has released by Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, and Jack DeJohnette (dubbed "the standards trio"). The first two -- The Out-of-Towners released in 2004 and My Foolish Heart issued in 2007 -- were actually recorded later than this live date recorded in Tokyo in April of 2001.

This also marks a first in the pianist's career: the George Gershwin tune "You Took Advantage of Me" appeared on My Foolish Heart in a very different arrangement, making this the first time Jarrett has ever employed a single track on two consecutive albums. On My Foolish Heart Jarrett used a full-on ragtime intro to the tune. Here, he employs a denser harmonic construction based on its changes and melodic frame. When the band enters, the pop and swing in the tune become pronounced, standing in the same universe as ragtime (which is more than likely the reason Jarrett employed it before) but also much more sophisticated and harmonically complex. CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Tribute

1989

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - bas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic: "The Keith Jarrett Standards Trio gets back down to business with two CDs' worth of familiar and perhaps not-so-familiar tunes, recorded in one evening in Cologne, Germany. There is a concept this time, for all the standards carry a dedication to some jazz man or woman who performed them -- and they are not predictable choices; Lee Konitz for "Lover Man," "It's Easy to Remember" for John Coltrane, "All of You" for Miles Davis, etc.

Almost every number has a reflective solo piano introduction, with one of the notable exceptions being Jarrett's rolling, convoluted opening variations on "All the Things You Are" (Sonny Rollins). "Solar" (the Bill Evans tribute) has challenging, fractured interplay between Jarrett, Jack DeJohnette and Gary Peacock, and it directly segues into Jarrett's own obsessive "Sun Prayer," which seems to lose its way after a fine start.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Inside Out

2000

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

ecmreviews:
"Of his approach to this 2001 album, recorded live the year before in London, pianist Keith Jarrett says, “Don’t ask. Don’t think. Don’t anticipate. Just participate.” Where for so long he and his partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette had served up piping hot new takes on old recipes, here they decided to do away with all that and, with the exception of their version of the evergreen “When I Fall In Love” that concludes, let the music create itself. What in others’ hands would have been a risky venture turns into a balanced, intuitive record from these most capable sound-smiths.

Wolfgang Muthspiel - chitara

This album is one arc, one musical environment. Rapt atmospheres descend, then evolve. Muthspiel is a romantic, but he is also technically astute and concise. He plays very few nonessential notes. The essence of the Eicher aesthetic is cinematic. [ Thomas Conrad, Jazz Times ]

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Simple Acoustic Trio

2005
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas

These three young Poles are known to ECM listeners worldwide for their sensitive playing in the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. In their homeland, however, they are also have a strong reputation as an autonomous group.

Their first international release shows why. With a wide-open repertoire that intersperses original material with interpretations of pieces by Björk, Wayne Shorter and Szymanowski, Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz bring something new to the piano trio tradition.

CD ECM Records Stefano Battaglia Trio: In The Morning - Music Of Alec Wilder

2015

Stefano Battaglia - pian
Salvatore Maiore - contrabas
Roberto Dani - tobe

Piano trios are becoming something of a speciality within the Italian jazz fraternity and now reaching the venerable age of fifty, leader and pianist Stefano Battaglia demonstrates why he is one of the leading exponents in both his country and on the European continent with this live recording from the Teatro Vittoria in Turin in April 2014. […] Battaglia is very much his own man and devotes the album to an exploration of one of the major, yet lesser known composers of what has become known as the great American songbook in Alec Wilder […] once again an ECM recording of distinction with impeccable sound as ever. CD ECM Records Jack DeJohnette: In Movement

2016

Jack DeJohnette: tobe, pian, percutie electronica
Ravi Coltrane: saxofoane
Matthew Garrison: bas electric, electronice

"There is something of the "six degrees of separation" theory at work in this newly formed trio, led loosely, by the great Jack DeJohnette. The drummer/multi-instrumentalist works in the company of saxophonist Ravi Coltrane whose lineage is well known, and bassist/electronic artist Matthew Garrison whose father Jimmy Garrison was the bassist in John Coltrane's classic quartet. And, of course, DeJohnette, early in his career, played with the fathers of both of his trio mates. [ AllAboutJazz ]

CD ECM Records Charlie Haden, Carla Bley: The Ballad Of The Fallen

1983

Charlie Haden - bas
Carla Bley - pian, glockenspiel, aranjamente
Don Cherry - trompetaSharon Freeman French Horn
Mick Goodrick - chitara
Jack Jeffers - tuba
Michael Mantler - trompeta
Paul Motian - tobe, percutie
Jim Pepper - saxofoane, flaut
Dewey Redman - saxofon tenor
Steve Slagle - saxofoane, clarinet, flaut
Gary Valente - trombon

The outbursts of free improvisation throughout the album contrast the beautiful songs and add a confrontational side of protest to the music. After all the issues at hand do piss off these musicians. In a surprising move Downbeat Magazine selected Ballad of the Fallen as Jazz album of the year in 1984. ECM was a favorite label on the magazine in the early 80s. The Art Ensemble Of Chicago – Full Force won in 1981 and Old and New Dreams – Playing in 1982.
