CD ACT Vijay Iyer with Prasanna & Nitin Mitta: Tirtha

2008

Vijay Iyer - pian
Prasanna - chitara, voce
Nitin Mitta - tabla

“Tirtha (the band) formed in response to an invitation. In 2007 I was asked to put together a concert celebrating 60 years of Indian independence. Normally I’ve steered clear of fusion experiments that attempt to mix styles - to “create something,” as John Coltrane famously admonished, “more with labels, you see, than true evolution.” For this event I hoped to avoid those pitfalls, and offer something personal. 2011

Denes Varjon - pian

Alban Berg - Sonata Op. 1
Leos Janacek - V Mlhach ( In The Mists )
Franz Liszt - Sinata In B Minor

And from the very start of the CD, the luminous playing of the opening of Berg’s Sonata Op.1 tells us this is a pianist of rare sensitivity. The word seems almost to float in this performance, continually remaking itself from moment to moment and never come to rest. […] Varjón ranges through the music as if mapping an unknown landscape. […] All in all, a very impressive and intelligently planned programme. [ Calum MacDonald, BBC Music Magazine ]

2006

Ivan Monighetti - violoncel, pian, dirijor

Alexander Knaifel
- Lamento For Violoncello Solo (1967)
- Blazhenstva For Soloists, Orchestra And Choir (1996)

Following on from the critically-acclaimed “Amicta Sole” album, Russian composer Alexander Knaifel presents two strikingly different compositions, inspirationally linked through the figure of Mstislav Rostropovich. Knaifel’s background as a cellist is put to good service in the 18 minute Lamento for solo cello (written 1967, revised 1987).

Alexander Knaifel :
- Psalm 51(50) For Cello Solo
- Amicta Solo (Clothed With The Sun) For Soloists (Female) Of Soloists

Composer Alexander Knaifel collaborates with cellist Mstislav Rostropovich on Psalm 51, which is held by some to convey the most comprehensive expression of emotions in the book of Psalms. Rostropovich is called upon to “sing” the Russian translation of the text, articulating it through the medium of the cello. One of the finest living cellists, Rostropovich draws out an astonishing array of colours and textures. The pure voice of the composer’s wife Tatiana, along with soloists of the Glinka Boys Choir, sings out the spiritual texts of Amicta Sole. Compelling listening. [ Gavin Engelbrecht, Northern Echo ]

CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Kremerata Baltica - Victor Kissine: Between Two Waves

2011

Gidon Kremer - vioara
Daniil Grishin - viola
Giedre Dirvanauskaite - violoncel
Andrius Zlabys - pian
Andrei Pushkarev - percutie
Kremerata Baltica ( dirijor Roman Kofman )

Between Two Waves is both a title for the opening work and a key to the link between all three pieces in this programme. The composer’s own notes describe the city in which he was born, St Petersburg, as having ‘a seaweed savour’ and being a place which ‘inspires elegies’. The opening of the piano concerto is certainly atmospheric in an elegiac way, with a pervasive shimmering of water expressed through tremolando strings, trills and beams of light shining through from the notes of the piano. This is no conventional piano concerto, and the solo instrument is often a point of repose between the restless strings, an inversion of virtuoso preconceptions for the genre. Victor Kissine: Zerkalo
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Trio, Op.50

Victor Kissine’s „Zerkalo“ (The Mirror), composed in 2009 and dedicated to the performers on this warmly engineered release, proves to be an intriguing companion piece for the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. A compelling and emotionally varied work which draws its inspiration from two lines in Anna Akhmatova’s “Poem Without a Hero”, it begins with a sequence of framentary melodic ideas which dradually develop a coherent force as they gather momentum before disintegrating into a shadowy and bleak coda.

Giya Kancheli - Lament

Breathtaking and emotionally-fraught violin by Gidon Kremer dominates one of Georgian composer Kancheli's most moving compositions, dedicated to fallen comrade Luigi Nono. Reviews of the work in performance have spoken of a vast, brooding, stillness, where patience is 'rewarded by moments of great, piercing beauty.'

CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Kremerata Baltica - Mahler / Shostakovich

2007

Yulia Korpacheva - soprana
Fëdor Kuznetsov - bas
Kremerata Baltica, dirijeaza Gidon Kremer

This is an extremely dramatic and atmospheric performance of the Shostakovich 14th Symphony, the more unusual for being conducted by Gidon Kremer from the concertmaster’s desk. There’s no loss of scale, but certainly an intensified sense of intimacy, and he is served by magnificent playing from the Kremerata Baltica and two first-rate soloists. … The coupling is the Adagio from Mahler’s Tenth Symphony in an arrangement for strings only… This too is beautifully played, and in this dedicated reading the music discloses previously unsuspected links back to Schoenberg’s Verklärte Nacht and forward to Strauss’s Metamorphosen. CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Patricia Kopatchinskaja - Giya Kancheli: Chiaroscuro

2015

Gidon Kremer - vioara
Patricia Kopatchinskaja - vioara
Kremerata Baltica

While the title work ‘Chiaroscuro’ claims to take its inspiration from a dramatic painting technique dating from the renaissance and baroque eras, its ominous opening bass drum intonations usher in a surprisingly Fellini-esque sensation. It’s a temporary optimism that’s rare to Kancheli’s generally bleak musical landscapes. Yet it is this very bleakness that makes it such a glorious match for Manfred Eicher’s signature dark yet vibrantly present recording style. For his part, Gidon Kremer’s long-standing creative partnership with Kancheli brings a unique spin and strong new influence to the performance of this work on the current disc, moving as it does from the lightness of its opening bars to the truly morose and more familiar Kancheli fair that eventually arrives. Stefan Kovacs Tickmayer - Eight Hymns In Memoriam Andrei Tarkovsky
Cesar Franck - Piano Quintet In F Minor
Giya Kancheli - Silent Prayer

This is a typically unusual ECM disc, and I would especially urge those with an angst for contemporary music to try it. The Franck is a rich but deeply rewarding filling to what might seem a ‘modern’ sandwich, but the outer works are special and memorable – at times jaw-droppingly beautiful, and always performed with infectious conviction by the musicians of Kremerata Baltica.

Vox Clamantis, dirijor Jaan-Eik Tulve

Estonian ensemble Vox Clamantis brings together singers and instrumentalists who share an interest in Gregorian chant as the basis of all European art music. Their interpretation of medieval music is never purely ‘historical’: while always remaining true to the spirit of this repertoire, the approach to the work and the selection of pieces is contemporary.

Tigran Mansurian :
- Double Concerto, for violin, violoncello and string orchestra
- Concerto No. 2, for violin and string orchestra "Four Serious Songs"

Spellbinding work of beauty […] The Mansurian program is a woman’s affair with the young Moldavian violinist joined by cellist Anja Lechner and Amsterdam Sinfonietta conducted by its leader, Candida Thompson. Kopatchinskaja brings resilient radiance to Mansurian’s 2006 hauntingly plaintive Second Violin concerto (‘Four serious Songs’), which takes its cue from late Brahms. In Tulve’s music the thinking always seems more vertical than horizontal; the predominant mood is introspective, almost meditational, the textures and harmonies beautifully imagined, the sense of pulse and forward momentum often elusive. ‘Extinction des Choses Vues’ for orchestra does build to a massive climax, achieved through weight and intensity rather than movement; the effect is rather like Kaija Saariaho’s music of the 1980s and 90s, and wonderfully achieved. Robert Schumann :
- Streichquartett Nr.1 In A-Mol, Op. 41/1
- Streichquartett Nr.3 In A-Mol, Op. 41/3

And these performances by the Zehetmair Quartet? Quite simply, the best: agile, excitable, nervously intense and in the slower music probing to an almost painful degree. Theirs is a dialogue that brings Schumann’s spirit to life, which is pretty rare in age that so often seems unresponsive to Romantic sensibilities. Indeed I would call these interpretations genuinely “authentic”. A watershed release, superbly recorded. [ Rob Cowan, Gramophone ]

CD ECM Records Reto Bieri: Contrechant - Music for Clarinet solo

2010

Reto Bieri - clarinet

Luciano Berio - Lied
Heinz Holliger - Contrechant
Salvatore Sciarrino - Let Me Die Before I Wake
Elliott Carter - Gra
Heinz Holliger - Rechant
Peter Eotvos - Derwischtanz
Gergely Vajda - Lightshadow - Trembling

Reto Bieri’s unaccompanied programme gets to the essence of each composer and actually feels the better fort he lack of busy counterpoint (e.g. in the case of Elliott Carter). And there is no risk of solo clarinet becoming insufficient; Bieri holds attention throughout with his beauty of tone and uncommon expressiveness with multiphonics, which can often feel gimmicky. A marvellous disc which takes clarinet playing to a new level. Highly recommended to explorer listeners who don’t seek just facile excitement. [ Peter Grahame Woolf, Musikal Pointers ]

2003

Heinrich Schiff - violoncel
Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra, dirijor Peter Eotvos

Friedrich Cerha - Konzert Fur Violoncello Und Orchester
Franz Schreker - Kammersymphonie In Einem Satz

Cellist Heinrich Schiff delivers a transcendent performance of a cello concerto dedicated to him “in friendship” by Austria’s great composer Friedrich Cerha (born 1926). Cerha’s special combination of stylistic conviction and expressive diversity, much in evidence here, has been attributed to his intense involvement with the Second Vienna School (he is still best known for completing Act 3 of Berg’s ‘Lulu’) . Under Peter Eötvös’s direction the Netherlands Radio Chamber Orchestra explore the variegated textures of Cerha’s concerto and also the rich colours of the Chamber Symphony in One Movement by Franz Schreker (1878-1934).

2015

Zsofia Kornyei - vioara
Janos Pilz - vioara
Zoltan Gal - viola
Judit Szabo - violoncel
Otto Kertesz - violoncel
Alexei Lubimov - pian

In program: Beethoven, Ligeti, Bach, Kurtag, Schnittke, Knaifel

The Keller Quartett’s new recording is a collection of slow movements, recorded from 1995 to 2012. If that puts you in mind of those bloated compilations of yesteryear with titles like ‘Adagio’ and ‘Classical Relaxation,’ fear not: What violinist András Keller and ECM producer Manfred Eicher have created is a series of gestures in which, regardless of style or era, time is made to stand still. […] The final movement of Schnittke’s Piano Quintet (with Alexei Lubimov) is emblematic of the whole project: A lullaby-like theme is gradually layered with dissonance and a sense of tragedy, so that as it fades out, it seems drained of its innocence. It’s not unlike what happens when the Beethoven returns at the end. […] It’s the originality of its conception that makes this disc so worthwhile. [ David Weininger, Boston Sunday Globe ]

CD ECM Records Juliane Banse, Andras Keller - Gyorgy Kurtag: Kafka-Fragmente

2006

Juliane Banse - soprana
Andras Keller - vioara

Gyorgy Kurtag: Kafka-Fragmente, Op. 24

The hour-long Kafka-Fragments, completed in 1986, is his biggest work to date: it’s a characteristic cycle of 40 tiny movements, scored for soprano voice and violin, that adds up to something far greater than the sum of its parts. The text is a mosaic of quotations from Kafka’s writings, diaries and letters. The cycle is divided into four parts, articulated by the two longest movements; they draw a huge range of expression from soprano Juliane Banse and violinist András Keller. Banse’s nuances of vocal colouring are wonderfully subtle, while Keller can conjure up huge intensity from a single musical gesture. They show Kafka Fragments to be a quiet masterpiece of richness and emotional power. [ Andrew Clements, The Guardian ]
