CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett : A Multitude Of Angels

2016
Keith Jarrett - pian

If ‘A Multitude of Angels’ represents the last, 20 years later, of Jarrett's epic improvisational forays to be released, it's as strong a swan song of that period in his life as any. More, truthfully, because in its revelatory nature, surprising energy and persistent invention, this collection of four outstanding concerts that few could manage in good health, let alone Jarrett's declining physical condition—where the pianist writes that he ‘was busy playing as though it was the last time’—stands amongst the very best of the pianist's long-form solo piano releases. It's a set whose importance cannot be underestimated and should not be undervalued. [ John Kelman, All About Jazz ]

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Le Pas Du Chat Noir

2002

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon

The album is like a sad rhapsody, full of shadowy mirages and blue echoes, the prevailing melancholy not dour and heavy but rather light and cloudy. Names like Satie, Debussy, Mounir Bachir, even Eno in acoustic mode keep flashing across your mental screen as you listen. This is academy music with no clothes on, naked and awkward, honest and beautiful. Shut your eyes and you could be in the port of Dar el Baida, a seagull swooping over a grey-blue sea and huge cranes and rusty hulled freighters in the background, the light and forgetful breeze brushing your cheek. Le pas du chat noir features uncontrived performances of cat-like agility – soft, bright-eyed and magical. It is a brilliant piece of work. [ Andy Morgan, Songlines ]

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: The Astounding Eyes Of Rita

2009

Anouar Brahem - oud
Klaus Gesing - bas clarinet
Bjorn Meyer - bas electric
Khaled Yassine - darbouka, bendir

Although Brahem’s music is grounded in the traditions that have grown up around the oud over centuries…, his hybridization of those traditions with the ways of European and American jazz have made his extremely individual canon pointedly modern, and very much an example of a genuine world music. Brahem and Gesing’s beguiling interplay – a mystical poetry… – could not exist without rhythmic drive, supplied here… by Swedish bassist Björn Meyer and Lebanes percussionist Khaled Yassine. … Both he and Meyer drive the lead instrumentalists while also gathering a powerful energy between themselves. Throughout these eight tracks, it’s clear that not only do the clarinet and oud belong together, but the ideas that flow from both players mesh into an emotional and intellectual whole as they thrust and parry in turn, bending toward and away from each other. CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Solo

1979

Egberto Gismonti - chitara acustica, pian, voce, percutie

The sun rises on Solo through the 20-minute “Selva Amazonica, Pau Rolou,” by which Gismonti plants us into his fertile imagination. From that imagination we eventually depart with only the merest glimpses, despite the protracted track times.

The opening suite is replete with resonant 8-string guitar and the floating charm of his wordless singing. Touches such as the latter add hints of remembrance, sealing a child’s proverbial innocence with an adult’s creative stamp. Across this steel-stringed landscape Gismonti imprints the tread of the surdo (a bass drum of African origin), then settles into a pre-dawn hymn against a wavering backdrop of cooking bells.

CD ECM Records Charlie Haden, Egberto Gismonti: In Montreal

1989
Charlie Haden - contrabas
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian

This live album is amazing in its scope, power and beauty. On guitar or piano, Gismonti often sounds as if he's playing two instruments at once, combining fierce rhythms with shapely melodies while Haden's warm, rich bass broadens the music with grainy texture and depth...Gismonti and Haden always add twists to the rhythms and angles to the melodies, making the music prismatic. CD ECM Records Chick Corea: Return To Forever

1972

Chick Corea - pian electric
Joe Farrell - flaut, saxofon sopran
Flora Purim - voce, percutie
Stan Clarke - bas
Airto Moreira - tobe, percutie

Steve Huey ( AllMusicGuide ): "The legendary first lineup of Chick Corea's fusion band Return to Forever debuted on this classic album (titled after the group but credited to Corea), featuring Joe Farrell on soprano sax and flute, the Brazilian team of vocalist Flora Purim and drummer/percussionist Airto Moreira, and electric bass whiz Stanley Clarke.

It wasn't actually released in the U.S. until 1975, which was why the group's second album, Light as a Feather, initially made the Return to Forever name. Nonetheless, Return to Forever is every bit as classic, using a similar blend of spacy electric-piano fusion and Brazilian and Latin rhythms. It's all very warm, light, and airy, like a soft breeze on a tropical beach -- hardly the sort of firebrand approach to fusion that Miles Davis, Tony Williams, and the Mahavishnu Orchestra were exploring, and far less rooted in funk or rock.

ecmreviews : "With Ragas and Sagas, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek surely turned not a few heads by collaborating with legendary Pakistani vocalist Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (not to be confused with Nusrat). With attuned support from sarangi, backing vocals, tabla, and a fairly young Manu Katche, this album fulfills every promise it makes on the cover alone.

Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Marilyn Mazur - percutie
Tbilisi Symphony Orchestra ( dirijor Jansug Kakhidze )
Bugge Wesseltoft - claviaturi, acordeon, sintetizatoare

Jan Garbarek's powerful new double-album is a magnum opus, and well-titled. 'Rites' suggests initiations, rituals, the archaic, the magical, but also 'rites of passage', and the Norwegian saxophonist reflects, in his choice of material, upon pivotal episodes and influences in his own life and those of his associates.

Boxsetul este o reeditare a albumelor "Sart" ( 1971), "Witchi-Tai-To" (1973) si "Dansere" (1975)

Jan Garbarek - saxofoane, flaut
Bobo Stenson - pian, pian electric
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Arild Andersen - bas
Palle Danielsson - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

A welcome return to the ECM catalog for three of the most striking of the early recordings which Jan Garbarek made for the label in the 1970s. In different but related ways Sart (1971), Witchi-Tai-To (1973) and Dansere (1975) brought freshly intelligent and invigorating perspective to bear on questions of dynamics, group sound, interaction and swing, the relation of improvisation and abstraction to the roots of jazz, and the relevance of archetypal yet freshly inflected folk forms to contemporary music. Two ensembles are heard here – Garbarek/Stenson/Rypdal/Andersen/Christensen on the exploratory Sart, and the spirited Jan Garbarek-Bobo Stenson Quartet, one of the most exciting groups of the era.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: In Praise Of Dreams

2004
Jan Garbarek - saxofoane
Kim Kashkashian - viola
Manu Katche - tobe

Following a six-year break from recording, with only a guest appearance on bassist Miroslav Vitous' Universal Syncopations ('03) and a :Rarum compilation ('02), Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek returns with his first album of new material since Rites ('98). In Praise of Dreams continues along the path established by such recordings as Legend of the Seven Dreams , I Took Up The Runes , and Visible World. But while Garbarek demonstrates the same penchant for deceptively simple pieces with almost anthem-like themes, his collaboration with violist Kim Kashkashian and drummer Manu Katche results in something richer, something deeper than what has come before. "Recorded nine months prior to his death in September 2014, Kenny Wheeler's Songs for Quintet is the acclaimed jazz trumpeter's last studio album. Produced by ECM's Manfred Eicher at London's Abbey Road Studios with a handful of Wheeler's closest musical associates, Songs for Quintet is an intimate, lyrical session that exemplifies all that made Wheeler such a distinctive voice in jazz.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Nomad Songs

2015

Stephan Micus - Ndingo, Genbri, Steel-String Guitar, Suling, Voice, Nay, Rewab, Rabab, Twelve-String Guitar, Fourteen-String Guitar, Tin Whistle, Shakuhachi

German born Stephan Micus is quite simply one of the most intriguing musicians in music. The multi-instrumentalist has over the course of many decades, concocted his own dialect playing instruments from cultures he has studied across the world. Micus’ albums generally take a few years to create as he builds layer upon layer of instrumentation, crafting each album with a particular theme in mind […] Micus’ twenty first ECM album “Nomad Songs” reflects in some respects cultures that have been uprooted from their traditions, have lived in peace and harmony wandering the land and due to factors beyond their control have had to adapt and relinquish their lifestyles as nomads. He integrates these new instruments into a palette as a pan cultural stew that musically represents harmony from seemingly disparate elements. […] This world melange takes the listener to many established places and even imagined ones, from the mind of one of the most captivating musicians around. The listener is taken on their own nomadic journey, and no matter where it brings them, the depth will reveal something different each time. [ CJ Shearn, Blueceej.com ]

CD ECM Records Enrico Rava: On The Dance Floor

2011

Enrico Rava - trompeta

+ PM Jazz Lab, Andrea Tofanelli, Claudio Corvini, Mauro Ottolini, Daniele Tittarelli, Dan Kinzelman, Franz Bazzani, Giovanni Guidi, Dario Deidda, Marcello Giannini, Zeno de Rossi, Ernesto Lopez Maturell

It was only after Michael Jackson’s death that Italian trumpeter Enrico Rava gradually became aware that he had for many years been ignoring, in his words, “one of the great protagonists of 20th century music and dance. A total artist. A perfectionist. A genius. I felt the need to delve more deeply into Michael’s world. There was only one way to do that: play his songs.” Thus this live album, recorded at the Rome Auditorium with the Parco della Musica Jazz Lab. Enrico’s trumpet is at its most extroverted here, vaulting above the spirited arrangements by Mauro Ottolini. Michael Jackson’s protean pop songs have never been heard quite like this. Rava is currently playing European festivals with this programme.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: The Out-of-Towners

2001

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

ecmreviews: "With the insight of legitimate hypnotists, Keith Jarrett and his trio regress seven tunes with a flair for the unexpected. Recorded live at Munich’s State Opera in July of 2001, an especially productive year for the band, the performance whispers into life with a piano intro before waxing nostalgic in a sunny rendition of “I Can’t Believe That You’re In Love With Me.” Jarrett, of course, shines at every turn, but his phenomenal rhythm section has rarely sounded more luminescent. Light in their step and playful in their virtuosity, Jarrett’s sidemen exude effortlessness. Peacock is worth singling out in this opening tune, in which he departs from his usual twang in favor of a smoother, subtler extroversion. He reverts to his tried and true in a rendition of “You’ve Changed” that turns to melted butter in the trio’s hands. With Jarrett’s delicate anchorage behind him, the bassist picks away at edifice of the song’s confusion to a core of resolve. Jarrett pours on the honey for the rejoinder, DeJohnette all the while brushing like the wings of a dying insect, swishing to the rhythm of a broken heart. Brushes turn to cymbals in an effervescent take on Cole Porter’s “I Love You,” which finds the drummer running a parallel course of emotional freedom alongside Jarrett. Artful solos abound.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: Somewhere

2009

Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

AllMusic (Thom Jurek):
"It is almost superfluous to write about Keith Jarrett's three-decades-and-running standards trio with Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette. Given their recorded output, it's easy to discern why they are regarded by many as the greatest living piano trio. They have continued to imbue the standards book with new dimensions of meaning, creating a near symbiotic dialogue in harmonic and rhythmic invention while remaining emotionally resonant.

The performances on Somewhere were recorded in 2009, and are the first offerings by the group on record in four years, though they continue to play select dates annually. Since their three previous releases were all taken from a 2001 tour, this show reflects an eight-year growth period. The opener is a Jarrett improvisation entitled "Deep Space," which is a building block solo intro to Miles Davis' "Solar," and which this group has recorded before -- several times in fact -- but never with the kind of lyric audacity and rumbling low-end counterpoint that Peacock puts on offer here. There's a popping read of Harold Arlen's and Ted Koehler's "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," with Jarrett playing chunky, staggered chords that manage to slip 4/4 as he dialogues with DeJohnette. The pair go at the time signature from both ends, refusing its authority until not to do so would result in its collapse. Peacock binds their conversation while finding his own way in and out of an implied yet never directly engaged sense of swing.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett, Gary Peacock, Jack DeJohnette: After The Fall

2018
Keith Jarrett - pian
Gary Peacock - contrabas
Jack DeJohnette - tobe

The group colloquially known as “the Standards trio” has made many outstanding recordings, and After The Fall must rank with the very best of them. “I was amazed to hear how well the music worked,” writes Keith Jarrett in his liner note. “For me, it’s not only a historical document, but a truly great concert.” This performance – in Newark, New Jersey in November 1998 – marked Jarrett’s return to the concert stage after a two year hiatus. Joined by improvising partners Gary Peacock and Jack DeJohnette, he glides and soars through classics of the Great American Songbook including “The Masquerade Is Over”, “Autumn Leaves”, “When I Fall In Love” and “I’ll See You Again”. There are also breath-taking accounts of hallowed bebop tunes including Charlie Parker’s “Scrapple From The Apple”, Bud Powell’s “Bouncin’ With Bud” and Sonny Rollins’s “Doxy”.

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: Spark Of Life

2018
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe
Joakim Milder - saxofon tenor

The fourth ECM album for the Wasilewski Trio adds a special guest, the lyrical Swedish saxophonist Joakim Milder, whom the Poles came to know through performances with Tomasz Stanko’s Litania project. Amongst other affinities, the players share a love of Krzyzstof Komeda’s music, and Komeda’s “Sleep Safe and Warm” theme, written for Polanski’s Rosemary’s Baby make a reappearance here.

As ever, the Wasilewski group balances original material – intensely melodic new tunes by Marcin (including two variations of the beautiful title track) – with a daring range of covers, embracing Herbie Hancock, the Police’s “Message In A Bottle” and Slawomir Kurkiewicz’s arrangement of a composition by Grazyna Bacewicz, and reinforces its status as one of the most resourceful groups around. This is the trio’s second ECM appearance this year, following on from sterling work as Jacob Young’s rhythm section on Forever Young. Spark of Life was recorded in Lugano in March 2014, and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records Andrew Cyrille Quartet: The Declaration Of Music Independence

2016

Andrew Cyrille - tobe
Bill Frisell - chitara electrica
Richard Teitelbaum - pian, sintetizator
Ben Street - bas

A version of John Coltrane’s ‘Coltrane Time’ kicks things off with a snare pattern Cyrille learned from Coltrane drummer Rashied Ali – which he sustains while the others float rhythmically and arhythmically around him. Frisell’s melancholy ‘Kaddish’ rings quietly on over Cyrille’s far-distant mallets, Street’s ‘Say’ resembles a slow pop ballad, and ‘Dazzling (Perchordally Yours)’ is built around alternations of single chord-hits and silences, the players reacting to the resonances. It all swings without regular swing, sounding fluently melodic, though much of it is cell-like and episodic.
