CD ECM Records Gianluigi Trovesi, Gianni Coscia: La Misteriosa Musica Della Regina Loana

Gianluigi Trovesi - clarinet
Gianni Coscia - acordeon

This hugely enjoyable and highly inventive album is dedicated to the late Umberto Eco, a lifelong friend of accordionist Gianni Coscia and an ardent champion of this particular duo. Eco’s The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loanna, a meditation on the nature of memory, inspires Trovesi and Coscia on their own nostalgic and exploratory journey, referencing music mentioned in the novel and free-associating upon its philosophical themes. As ever, the Italians cast a wide net, playing songs associated with Louis Armstrong, Glenn Miller and George Formby, paraphrasing Janáček, dipping into movie music, and improvising most creatively while keeping their dedicatee in view. Repertoire revisits “Interludio”, a piece that Umberto Eco and Gianni Coscia collaborated on 70 years ago, and Gianluigi Trovesi crafts a new composition on the letters of Eco’s name. From multiple perspectives, a brilliant tribute.

CD ECM Records Zehetmair Quartett - Beethoven, Bruckner, Hartmann, Holliger

Thomas Zehetmair - vioara
Kuba Jakowicz - vioara
Ruth Killius - viola
Françoise Groben - violoncel
Ursula Smith - violoncel

This double album begins with Beethoven’s highly-concentrated opus 135, and concludes with Heinz Holliger’s explosions of fantasy in his 2nd String Quartet, a composition written for, and premiered by, the Zehetmair group. Bruckner’s rarely-heard C-minor quartet is, as Thomas Zehetmair notes, both touching and warm-hearted. These three pieces – the Beethoven, Bruckner and Holliger quartets – were recorded in Zurich 2010. The Hartmann Nr. 2 – “a large-scale nostalgic drama, full of wisdom” – was recorded in 2002 by an earlier quartet line-up, and this interpretation is previously unreleased.

CD ECM Records Trio Mediaeval: Aquilonis

Anna Maria Friman - voce
Linn Andrea Fuglseth - voce
Berit Opheim - voce

For those who have never heard the utterly distinctive sound of Norway's all-female Trio Mediaeval, this 2014 release may make a good place to start. The group has developed and honed that sound over several albums in programs featuring chant in several varieties, medieval polyphony, Norwegian folk melodies mostly harmonized in a quasi-medieval style, and contemporary compositions in a neo-medieval idiom. Bartók serves as the link between Schumann and Kurtág: when Kurtág says 'My mother tongue is Bartók, and Bartók's mother tongue was Beethoven' he is referring to the historically linked musical traditions of Germany and Austria, which are his special concern. [ -Philadelphia Inquirer ]

CD ECM Records Valery Afanassiev - Franz Schubert: Moments Musicaux

Valery Afanassiev - pian

Pianist Valery Afanassiev – renowned for his strikingly individual and deeply introspective interpretations of the music of Franz Schubert – has paired two often extrovert works by the composer: the set of six Moments Musicaux and the Sonata D. 850. Recorded in September 2010 at the Auditorio Radiotelevisione Svizzera, Lugano, this is ECM’s second Schubert recording by the Moscow-born pianist, having previously released a live recording of Afanassiev performing Schubert’s final Sonata D. 960 at the 1986 Lockenhaus Festival that has become a connoisseur’s favourite.

CD ECM Records Duo Gazzana: Five Pieces - Takemitsu / Hindemith / Janacek / Silvestrov

Natascia Gazzana - vioara
Raffaella Gazzana - pian

Toru Takemitsu - Distance Du Fee (1951)
Paul Hindemith - Sonata In E (1935)
Leos Janacek - Sonata (1914, rev 1921)
Valentin Silvestrov - Five Pieces (2004)

These works – a gently-pulsing elegy, a serenade, an intermezzo, a barcarole, a ghostly nocturne - receive their international release here in a context which combines the familiar and the far-flung, as Duo Gazzana finds creative affinities between the music of four very different composers. “The programme as a whole is typical of the duo’s inquiring and sensitive approach to repertory”, writes Paul Griffiths in the liner notes. “What we hear here is a vital freshness”.

CD ECM Records Vijay Iyer: Mutations

Vijay Iyer - pian, electronice
Miranda Cuckson - vioara
Michi Wiancko - vioara
Kyle Armbrust - viola
Kivie Cahn-Lipman - violoncel

"Mutations is not only Vijay Iyer's debut album for ECM, but also the first recording he's issued since winning a MacArthur Foundation "genius" grant in the fall of 2013. As a recording, it is certainly among his most provocative. There are no traces of his Hindustani or Carnatic jazz explorations, his athletic post-bop or modal works, or even his explosive readings of modern pop. This is a showcase for Iyer the composer. CD ECM Records Mstislav Rostropovich, Tatiana Melentieva - Alexander Knaifel: Amicta Sole

Mstislav Rostropovich - violoncel
Tatiana Melentieva - soprana
Boy Choir Glinka Choral College, dirijor Vladimir Begletsov
State Hermitage Orchestra, dirijor Arkady Shteinlukht

Alexander Knaifel :
- Psalm 51(50) For Cello Solo
- Amicta Solo (Clothed With The Sun) For Soloists (Female) Of Soloists

Composer Alexander Knaifel collaborates with cellist Mstislav Rostropovich on Psalm 51, which is held by some to convey the most comprehensive expression of emotions in the book of Psalms. Rostropovich is called upon to “sing” the Russian translation of the text, articulating it through the medium of the cello. One of the finest living cellists, Rostropovich draws out an astonishing array of colours and textures. The pure voice of the composer’s wife Tatiana, along with soloists of the Glinka Boys Choir, sings out the spiritual texts of Amicta Sole. Compelling listening. [ Gavin Engelbrecht, Northern Echo ]

CD ECM Records Gidon Kremer, Dirvanauskaite, Buniatishvili - Tchaikovsky, Kissine: Piano Trios

Gidon Kremer - vioara
Giedre Dirvanauskaite - violoncel
Khatia Buniatishvili - pian

Victor Kissine: Zerkalo
Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky - Trio, Op.50

Victor Kissine’s „Zerkalo“ (The Mirror), composed in 2009 and dedicated to the performers on this warmly engineered release, proves to be an intriguing companion piece for the Tchaikovsky Piano Trio. A compelling and emotionally varied work which draws its inspiration from two lines in Anna Akhmatova’s “Poem Without a Hero”, it begins with a sequence of framentary melodic ideas which dradually develop a coherent force as they gather momentum before disintegrating into a shadowy and bleak coda.

Giya Kancheli - Lament

Breathtaking and emotionally-fraught violin by Gidon Kremer dominates one of Georgian composer Kancheli's most moving compositions, dedicated to fallen comrade Luigi Nono. Reviews of the work in performance have spoken of a vast, brooding, stillness, where patience is 'rewarded by moments of great, piercing beauty.'

CD ECM Records Helena Tulve: Lijnen

1997 - 2006

Helena Tulve, NYYD Ensemble, Olari Elts, Arianna Savall, Stockholm Saxophone Quartet, Sven Westerberg, Jrgen Pettersson, Leif Karlborg, Per Hedlund, Emmanuelle Ophle-Gaubert, Mihkel Peske, Silesian String Quartet, Szymon Krzeszowiec, Arkadiusz Kubica, Lukasz Syrnicki, Piotr Janosik

Her music has a real fluid sculptural quality, conceived within a soundworld that is frequently dominated by wind instruments. It’s not music that goes out of its way to be ingratiating, but as this highly impressive collection shows, behind this take-it-or-leave-it façade lurks music of real personality and expressive depth. CD ECM Records Tigran Hamasyan: Luis I Luso

Tigran Hamasyan Piano, Prepared Piano
Yerevan State Choir
Harutyun Topikyan Conductor

Arranged by Hamasyan, the pieces date from the 5th to the 20th centuries and are sung by a 23-strong choir in an earthily passionate liturgical style. The role of the piano is vital: sometimes introducing a theme, sometimes improvising around it, Hamasyan uses the characteristic, Eastern-hued Armenian modes to summon up an ancient world. It’s very different to Jan Garbarek and the Hilliard Ensemble’s million-selling ‘Officium’, but if you liked that, you’ll love this. [ Phil Johnson, Independent On Sunday ]

CD ECM Records Anna Gourari - Prokofiev, Medtner, Chopin: Visions fugitives

Sergey Prokofiev - Visions Fugitives Op. 22
Nikolay Medtner - Fairy Tale In F Minor Op. 26/3
Frederic Chopin - Sonata No. 3 In B Minor Op. 58

Anna Gourari - pian

Gourari triumphs on this program. She handles difficult technical parts with a speech-like continuity that flows the music wonderfully well. The Prokofiev has all the mystery and movement we could ask for. She understands his at times eccentric evocative moods and gives us a reading that glows with freshness. The Chopin has a weighted depth of feeling that neither under nor overplays the sentiments so nobly and fully, pianistically expressed. In every way Anna Gourari brings us her brilliant interpretive skills. The Prokofiev sings, the Chopin reverberates. A beautiful recital!
