CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Robert Levin: Elegies

Kim Kashkashian - viola
Robert Levin - pian

Benjamin Britten, Ralph Vaughan Williams, Elliott Carter, Alexander Glasunow, Franz Liszt, Zoltan Kodaly, Henri Vieuxtemps

“Elegies,” an elegant but somber collection played by Kim Kashkashian and Robert Levin, is perfect for a dreary, lonely day. With its darker, lower sound, a viola sounds like a violin which has lost its will to live, the perfect voice for singing an elegy — a song in praise to the dead. What a somber mood it is. The title of the first cut, Benjamin Britten’s “Lachrymae,” refers to tears. Britten doesn’t write of the tears from the first stab of heartbreak, but the exhausted tears which come later.” [ Associated Press ]

CD ECM Records Kim Kashkashian, Keith Jarrett - Bach: 3 Sonaten Fur Viola De Gamba Und Cembalo

1994

Kim Kashkashian - viola de gamba
Keith Jarrett - clavecin

J.S. Bach :
Sonate G-Dur BWV 1027
Sonate D-Dur BWV 1028
Sonate G-Moll BWV 1029

The viola da gamba is an obsolete instrument now, but in Bach's day there were two large families of stringed instruments: the older gambas and the newer violins. Although quite similar in construction and performance technique, the soft, husky sound of the gambas was gradually replaced by the steely brilliance of the violins. Indeed, only one member of the family--the double bass--remains in modern use. Today most artists play the music on either a viola or a cello, since the music can be adapted easily to either. Kashkashian plays the viola, and as she is one of the greatest performers on that instrument around, and given Jarrett's clean and limber accompaniments, she acquits herself with honor and grace in this lovely music. CD ECM Records Jakob Bro: Returnings

2018

Jakob Bro - chitara
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

“Danish guitarist Jakob Bro creates magical music, impossible to categorize”, wrote Downbeat recently. On Returnings the magic is intensified as Bro and musical soul-mate Thomas Morgan reconnect with two living legends of European jazz, trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and drummer Jon Christensen. It’s a wonderful combination: Bro’s watercolour guitar sounds, Mikelborg’s soft Milesian flugelhorn, Morgan’s impeccable choice of notes, and Christensen’s free-floating drumming . These components add up to one of the prettiest and subtlest jazz albums of recent times. Returnings was recorded in July 2016 at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records Keith Jarrett : A Multitude Of Angels

2016
Keith Jarrett - pian

If ‘A Multitude of Angels’ represents the last, 20 years later, of Jarrett's epic improvisational forays to be released, it's as strong a swan song of that period in his life as any. More, truthfully, because in its revelatory nature, surprising energy and persistent invention, this collection of four outstanding concerts that few could manage in good health, let alone Jarrett's declining physical condition—where the pianist writes that he ‘was busy playing as though it was the last time’—stands amongst the very best of the pianist's long-form solo piano releases. It's a set whose importance cannot be underestimated and should not be undervalued. [ John Kelman, All About Jazz ]

CD ECM Records Michael Galasso: High Lines

2002
Michael Galasso - vioara
Terje Rypdal - chitara electrica
Frank Coln - percutie
Marc Marder - contrabas

Classically-trained violinist/composer Galasso’s first ECM release in 20 years is a mix of influences from jazz and classical music to – probably – idioms from the near, middle and far east he has encountered in his ceaseless wandering around the world. … Galasso, who composed all these, mostly short, pieces, is a virtuoso of breathtaking quality, and Rypdal fills the performances in which he takes part with some compelling texture. Whether or not it may be considered jazz doesn’t really matter; it remains one of the more unusual releases of the year.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Sol Do Meio Dia

1978
Egberto Gismonti -chitara, percutie, kalimba, fluier din lemn, voce
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, berimbau, tama
Ralph Towner - chitara
Collin Walcott - tabla
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran

Inspired by his time spent with the Xingu Indians of the Amazon, to whom the album is also dedicated, Sol Do Meio Dia (Midday Sun) is a consistently intriguing transitional album from multi-instrumentalist Egberto Gismonti. With him are percussionists Nana Vasconcelos and Collin Walcott and guitarist Ralph Towner, as well as Jan Garbarek on soprano saxophone for a brief spell.

At this point in his career, Gismonti was beginning to fill in the porous sound of his 8-string guitar. To this end, Vasconcelos and Walcott flesh out much of the dizzying rhythmic space that defines his sound, while Towner’s 12-string laces the background with more explicit chording. Walcott traces magical circles in “Raga,” for which Gismonti engages us with nimble fingerwork on the guitar’s highest harmonics. Thus begins a chain of sporadic bursts acting in dialogue.

ecmreviews : "With Ragas and Sagas, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek surely turned not a few heads by collaborating with legendary Pakistani vocalist Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (not to be confused with Nusrat). With attuned support from sarangi, backing vocals, tabla, and a fairly young Manu Katche, this album fulfills every promise it makes on the cover alone.

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: On The Wing

2006

Stephan Micus - Satara, Guitar, Nay, Suling, Cymbals, Gong, Shakuhachi, Sitar

“On the Wing” is Stephan Micus’s first album without voice since 1990 and in contrast to “Life” (2004) in which he set to music a Japanese Zen Koan this album is not built around a “libretto”. Although the titles of the individual pieces convey the musician’s close affinity to nature they are associative rather than descriptive. Nevertheless, the album is conceived as an entity. “For me this is like a journey or a story: the start of a movement that is transformed in many ways and eventually comes to an end”, says Micus of his ten-part suite. The first four pieces, for example, prepare for the large ensemble of the fifth, “The Bride”, which takes a central position also due to its ceremonial character.

CD ECM Records Marcin Wasilewski Trio: January

2008
Marcin Wasilewski - pian
Slawomir Kurkiewicz - contrabas
Michal Miskiewicz - tobe

“January” is a strong musical statement from a still-young band with a long history already behind it, and an album with an exceptionally wide-ranging programme - all of it played with assurance, purpose and focus. The disc reconfirms that the trio of Marcin Wasilewski, Slawomir Kurkiewicz and Michal Miskiewicz is one of the most outstanding contemporary jazz groups.

Their friend and mentor trumpeter Tomasz Stanko has said, “In the entire history of Polish jazz we’ve never had a band like this one. They just keep getting better and better.” It was through Stanko’s ECM recording “Soul of Things”, recorded 2001, that the wider world first had a hint of the capacity of Wasilewski/Kurkiewicz/Miskiewicz. Since then, they’ve toured widely with Stanko and contributed mightily to his quartet recordings “Suspended Night”and “Lontano”, recorded in 2003 and 2005.

These three young Poles are known to ECM listeners worldwide for their sensitive playing in the Tomasz Stanko Quartet. In their homeland, however, they are also have a strong reputation as an autonomous group.

Their first international release shows why. With a wide-open repertoire that intersperses original material with interpretations of pieces by Björk, Wayne Shorter and Szymanowski, Wasilewski, Kurkiewicz and Miskiewicz bring something new to the piano trio tradition.

SWR Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra, Roland Kluttig - dirijor

Nino G. - Beat Box

Stages Of A Long Journey is a crystal-clear recording of a 65th birthday concert held in his home town, Stuttgart. Guests such as Jan Garbarek and Marilyn Mazur play wonderfully, and the Stuttgart Radio Symphony Orchestra flesh out famous Weber tunes such as The Colours of Chloe and Silent Feet. … A soundworld further enhanced by the vibes of Gary Burton. Yet Weber always leads from the bass, with a timbre that rings true in any context.

Malachi Favors Maghostut - contrabas, percutie, melodica
Famoudou Don Moye - percutie solara
Lester Bowie - trompeta, celsta, toba mare

ecmreviews.com:
"Drawn from a wealth of sources and enhanced with the usual assortment of found sounds, The Third Decade is another solid outing from the Art Ensemble of Chicago that would be the group’s last on ECM for another seventeen years. One can always expect an eclectic experience on any AEC joint, and this one doesn’t disappoint.

From the snaking synthesizer lines and various nocturnal rustlings of Joseph Jarman’s “Prayer For Jimbo Kwesi,” which sound for all like the soundtrack to a home movie version of 2001: A Space Odyssey, to the freely improvised and maddening (traffic) jam of the title track, there’s bound to be something for everyone. The former, with its subtle horns and nascent bass, is especially fascinating and showcases the AEC’s ability to sustain itself through long, ponderous distances with unwavering interest.

CD ECM Records Dino Saluzzi: Navidad De Los Andes

2011

Dino Saluzzi - bandoneon
Anja Lechner - violoncel
Felix Saluzzi - saxofon tenor, clarinet

Cellist Anja Lechner and clarinet and sax man Felix Saluzzi both appeared as soloists on Dino’s orchestral recording “El Encuentro” in 2009, a shared pleasure in the work leading to the formation of the present trio, a group which draws on much musical history. Brothers Dino and Felix have more than 60 years of collaborations behind them. They started making music together as children in Argentina, and Felix frequently plays in Dino’s “family band” projects (as heard on ECM albums including “Mojotoro” and “Juan Condori)”. Anja Lechner has worked closely with Dino since the mid-1990s, beginning with the “Kultrum” alliance between Saluzzi and the Rosamunde Quartet.

"Liberetto II" by the exceptional Swedish bassist and cellist Lars Danielsson is the living proof. Three years ago he found a quartet with the former e.s.t. drummer Magnus Öström, the British guitarist John Paricelli and most of all as a new dream team duo with Armenian pianist Tigran. CD ECM Records David Virelles: Mboko

David Virelles - pian
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Robert Hurst - contrabas
Marcus Gilmore - tobe
Roman Diaz Biankoméko, voce

On his ECM debut, ‘Mbókó- Sacred Music For Piano, Two Basses, Drum Set And Biankoméko Abakuá’, the wildly original New York-based Cuban pianist David Virelles deploys folkloric sacred music from his homeland in a dynamic conversation with percussionist Román Díaz, fueled by improvisation. […] The participation of kit drummer Marcus Gilmore and double bassists Thomas Morgan and Robert Hurst is intricately woven into the music’s fabric, but the heart of the music pulses within the interactions of Virelles and Díaz. […] Boundaries between jazz, classical and Afro-Cuban music seem irrelevant for Virelles, and he has noted an embrace of the art’s social function, whether sacred or profane.
