CD ECM Records Paul Motian Band: Garden Of Eden

2006

Paul Motian - tobe
Chris Cheek - saxofon
Tony Malaby - saxofon tenor
Steve Cardenas - chitara
Ben Monder - chitara
Jakob Bro - chitara
Jerome Harris - bas

Listening to Paul Motian’s music can bring to mind architect Mies van der Rohe’s celebrated adage that his work aimed for an effect of „almost nothing“. In the case of both Mies and Motian, their magisterial art might belie their intent, but fashioning much from less has continued to be as essential a modus operandi for the New York jazz drummer as it was for the German visionary. … Motian’s genius lies in maintaining an understated, lingering tension, thus dissolving any vestiges of New Age moistness. By keeping the bass and guitar parts harmonically indirect, and by positioning substantive, if concise, improvisations from saxophonists Tony Malaby and Chris Cheek, Motian – his now-murmuring, now-biting, always unpredictable drumming commenting on it all from beneath – ensures edginess. CD ECM Records Jakob Bro: Returnings

2018

Jakob Bro - chitara
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn
Thomas Morgan - contrabas
Jon Christensen - tobe

“Danish guitarist Jakob Bro creates magical music, impossible to categorize”, wrote Downbeat recently. On Returnings the magic is intensified as Bro and musical soul-mate Thomas Morgan reconnect with two living legends of European jazz, trumpeter Palle Mikkelborg and drummer Jon Christensen. It’s a wonderful combination: Bro’s watercolour guitar sounds, Mikelborg’s soft Milesian flugelhorn, Morgan’s impeccable choice of notes, and Christensen’s free-floating drumming . These components add up to one of the prettiest and subtlest jazz albums of recent times. Returnings was recorded in July 2016 at Oslo’s Rainbow Studio and produced by Manfred Eicher.

CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: Cat 'n' Mouse

2000

John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Mark Feldman - vioara
Joey Baron - tobe
Marc Johnson - contrabas

"Cat ‘n’ Mouse introduces a streamlined quartet from the ever-extraordinary John Abercrombie. The guitarist is again joined by violinist Mark Feldman, whose peerless fluidity worked wonders on Open Land. In fact, the Abercrombie-Feldman nexus was what set the current project in motion, manifesting that former album’s title with even greater intuition. Flanked by longtime ally Marc Johnson on bass and drummer Joey Baron, the stage is set for a smooth ride through Abercrombie’s rich compositions and freer realization. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ACT Paolo Fresu / Richard Galliano / Jan Lundgren: Mare Nostrum

2007

Paolo Fresu - trumpet, fluegelhorn
Richard Galliano - accordion, bandoneon, accordina
Jan Lundgren - piano

Mare Nostrum's biggest surprise isn't its instrumentation -- a trio of accordion, trumpet and piano -- but how natural the combination sounds in its execution. Of course, Italian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordion player Richard Galliano (who is of Italian offspring), and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren are well-known, critically praised jazz musicians who have all been known to eschew musical boundaries and defy genre limitations, so the music on Mare Nostrum -- an album co-led by all three -- shouldn't come as a surprise, nor should its quality, and yet not everybody would have expected such marvelous results. CD ACT Paolo Fresu / Richard Galliano / Jan Lundgren: Mare Nostrum II

2014

Paolo Fresu - trompeta, flugelhorn
Richard Galliano - acordeon, bandoneon
Jan Lundgren - pian

The Long Wait is Over. Mare Nostrum presents 'The Sound of Europe'….. Part Two.Sardinian trumpeter Paolo Fresu, French accordionist Richard Galliano and Swedish pianist Jan Lundgren form the trio “Mare Nostrum” (meaning our sea, and the Romans' name for the Mediterranean). This band forges connections between the discrete musical cultures of its three protagonists.

Countless listeners worldwide have been captivated by their music, by this distinctive 'sound of Europe.'When the first album “Mare Nostrum” appeared in 2007, critics in many countries were unanimous in their opinion that these three musicians had succeeded, they had found their way to forging something of timeless beauty. This “lyrical jazz ensemble with a keen sense of composure” (Downbeat, USA) had created “a wonderful album of genuine warmth”

Lars Danielsson contrabas, violoncel, pian
Gregory Privat - pian
John Parricelli - chitara
Magnus Ostrom - tobe, percutie

Music must touch the emotionsFor Lars Danielsson, that consummate craftsman of sound on both cello and bass, the power of music resides in melody. It is the heart from which everything else develops, and his Liberetto ensemble has stayed true to this principle again in its third album.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Le Pas Du Chat Noir

2002

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon

The album is like a sad rhapsody, full of shadowy mirages and blue echoes, the prevailing melancholy not dour and heavy but rather light and cloudy. Names like Satie, Debussy, Mounir Bachir, even Eno in acoustic mode keep flashing across your mental screen as you listen. This is academy music with no clothes on, naked and awkward, honest and beautiful. Shut your eyes and you could be in the port of Dar el Baida, a seagull swooping over a grey-blue sea and huge cranes and rusty hulled freighters in the background, the light and forgetful breeze brushing your cheek. Le pas du chat noir features uncontrived performances of cat-like agility – soft, bright-eyed and magical. It is a brilliant piece of work. [ Andy Morgan, Songlines ]

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek, Anouar Brahem: Madar

1994
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran
Anouar Brahem - oud
Ustad Shaukat Hussain - tabla

Despite the loveliness of these interactions, the album works best in solitary. Brahem’s contemplative solo, “Bahia,” treks over twilit mountains with aching footsteps, carrying us as if by palanquin into a vale of lost intentions. The wind of his percussiveness shakes the boughs of leafless trees and sends their dead seeds clicking to the ground like sand against a window. And in the rhythmic cast of “Jaw,” Hussain emotes lifetimes in a single beat of his tabla, thus offering some intensely lucid moments. He returns to the fold in “Qaws,” giving voice to those waiting eyes at last with solid excitement. An odd piano “Epilogue” (sounding like a chord outline for a studio track left behind) leads us out.

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Anthem

2000
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

Operating somewhere between contemporary classical and jazz, ... Towner occupies a unique niche in jazz. Known for his carneo on Weather Report’s 1972 album I Sing The Body Electric and work with the classical crossover group Oregon and countless ECM luminaries, he is perhaps best loved for his solo recitals, of which Anthem is the latest – and it’s a gem. There’s a pair of jazz standards, but the majority of the mesmerising set comprises original 12-string and classical guitar pieces, aching, ruminative sketches and developed compositions of such emotional vividness and musical detail that they hardly seem to be the work of one man. The music tugs at the listener’s attention and, with breathtaking balance and control, is always compelling. The acoustic guitar has never sounded better, and neither has this amazing guitar player. CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Danca Des Cabecas

1977
Egberto Gismonti - chitara, pian, voce, flaute
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, berimbau, voce

Egberto Gismonti’s Dança das Cabeças (recorded 1976) was the first ECM disc from the brilliant Brazilian guitarist and pianist and the first document of Egberto’s collaboration with percussionist Nana Vasconcelos. It was a revelatory blending of sounds, Gismonti’s finely sculpted compositions irradiated by Nana’s Afro-Brazilian rhythm concept and his rainforest sounds. Dança das Cabeças won the German Record Critics Prize as Album of the Year in 1977.

CD ECM Records Egberto Gismonti: Solo

1979

Egberto Gismonti - chitara acustica, pian, voce, percutie

The sun rises on Solo through the 20-minute “Selva Amazonica, Pau Rolou,” by which Gismonti plants us into his fertile imagination. From that imagination we eventually depart with only the merest glimpses, despite the protracted track times.

The opening suite is replete with resonant 8-string guitar and the floating charm of his wordless singing. Touches such as the latter add hints of remembrance, sealing a child’s proverbial innocence with an adult’s creative stamp. Across this steel-stringed landscape Gismonti imprints the tread of the surdo (a bass drum of African origin), then settles into a pre-dawn hymn against a wavering backdrop of cooking bells.

CD ECM Records Shankar: Vision

1984
Shankar - vioara dubla, percutie
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran, tenor si bas, percutie
Palle Mikkelborg - trompeta, flugelhorn

One need only follow the pizzicato footsteps of “All For You” to get acquainted with the album’s beauties and to feel the shadows of Garbarek and Mikkelborg flying overhead. With this exuberant awakening still echoing inside us, we can only close our eyes in the title track.

1982.

Pat Metheny - chitara acustica si electrica
Lyle Mays - pian, sintetizatoare, Synclavier
Steve Rodby - bas
Dan Gottlieb - tobe
Nana Vasconcelos - percutie, voce, berimbau

AllMusicGuide: "Now well into its gliding Brazilian-tinged mode, the Pat Metheny Group hits the road, as this two-CD set catches the band live in Dallas, Philadelphia, Hartford, Sacramento, and Nacogdoches, TX.

Percussionist Nana Vasconcelos is still listed as a "special guest," but ever since Wichita Falls, he had not only been a part of the group, he was the transforming element in the Metheny "sound," adding his various shakers, effects and ethereal vocals.

ecmreviews : "With Ragas and Sagas, Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek surely turned not a few heads by collaborating with legendary Pakistani vocalist Ustad Fateh Ali Khan (not to be confused with Nusrat). With attuned support from sarangi, backing vocals, tabla, and a fairly young Manu Katche, this album fulfills every promise it makes on the cover alone.

Rainer Bruninghaus - pian, claviaturi
Yuri Daniel - bas
Manu Katche - tobe

AllMusic (Thom Jurek):
"It's hard to believe that after recording as a leader for 40 years, Dresden: In Concert is Jan Garbarek's first-ever live album. He has recorded sparely in 21st century thus far, but he has toured regularly. For those who think that Garbarek abandoned jazz some time ago, this will be a shock. Dresden is an engaged, kinetic, double-disc, two-hour performance of his quartet playing in the modern jazz idiom and using all of its tenets -- from complex harmonics and rhythmic invention to extended lyric improvisation -- to create a tour de force that honors all the music he holds dear.

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek Group: Photo With...

1979
Bill Connors - chitara
John Taylor - pian
Eberhard Weber - bas electric
Jon Christensen - tobe

Each piece breaks a piece from the longer title and rolls it out into a photo in its own right. “White Cloud” works its way from the inside out, laying the tender kindling of a solo piano before being set aglow by Garbarek’s deep smolder. Slowly but surely, drums, bass, and electric guitar weave their way into this dreamlike fabric, cinched by soothing legato threads. We keep our eyes on the cover as its “Windows” are hung with lilting harmonies between Garbarek and Taylor. An acoustic guitar speculates through its translucent frame, enhancing Connors’s understated brilliance all the more. “Red Roof” finds Garbarek in a more pentatonic mode in his soaring reverberant passages, while “Wires” gives us a more animated, earthbound concept in which to contemplate the patterns of our psychic dentition.

ecmreviews.com:
"That being said, Wayfarer tends to meander as much as its eponymous protagonist, although who’s to say this wasn’t the intention.

Gone is the full-on dreaminess of Paths, Prints. In its place: a session that walks in a half-sleep through picturesque territories without ever really looking at them, never quite knowing which reality it is committed to. "

CD ECM Records Jan Garbarek: Dis

1977
Jan Garbarek - saxofon tenor si sopran, fluier
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

On Dis, his eighth album for the label, Jan Garbarek slipped off his extroverted garments and into a deep look inward. One immediately notices the windharp, one of the last instruments one might expect to hear on an album filed under “Jazz,” and which would make an ECM reappearance on Arvo Pärt’s Te Deum.

2004

Kim Kashkashian - viola
The Hilliard Ensemble
Leonidas Kavakos - vioara
Jan Garbarek - saxofon
Münchener Kammerorchester , dirijeaza Christoph Poppen

Kim Kashkashian’s advocacy of the music of Tigran Mansurian led to last year’s critically-acclaimed “Hayren” album. Now comes a fuller portrait of Armenia’s foremost composer. This double album, made with Mansurian’s participation, includes premiere recordings of works of the last decade, in which Kashkashian is variously joined by Christoph Poppen and the Munich Chamber Orchestra, Jan Garbarek, and the Hilliard Ensemble, while Leonidas Kavakos is the soloist in the 1981 Concert for Violin and Orchestra. An extraordinary cast, doing justice to extraordinary music. “Monodia” is certain to be a much-discussed recording
