CD ECM Records Kayhan Kalhor, Erdal Erzincan: Kula Kulluk Yakisir Mi

2006

Kayhan Kalhor Kamanche
Erdal Erzincan Baglama

Precious little Persian classical music is available to roots enthusiasts in the West who are eager to improve their knowledge of Iran’s culture. In typical enterprising fashion, ECM has seen fit to record an intimate concert between two master musicians who, while emanating from two distinct cultures, are nonetheless linked by a shared border and a shared heritage that extends here to a musical métissage.[...] Pieces vary between traditionally-inspired and improvised numbers, but seam effortlessly into a cohesive whole. .[...] ECM certainly deserve credit for having the courage to put out this ambitious release and it fits comfortably into their continued support for world roots artists who would not otherwise gain a spotlight for themselves. CD ECM Records John Abercrombie: Cat 'n' Mouse

2000

John Abercrombie - chitara electrica
Mark Feldman - vioara
Joey Baron - tobe
Marc Johnson - contrabas

"Cat ‘n’ Mouse introduces a streamlined quartet from the ever-extraordinary John Abercrombie. The guitarist is again joined by violinist Mark Feldman, whose peerless fluidity worked wonders on Open Land. In fact, the Abercrombie-Feldman nexus was what set the current project in motion, manifesting that former album’s title with even greater intuition. Flanked by longtime ally Marc Johnson on bass and drummer Joey Baron, the stage is set for a smooth ride through Abercrombie’s rich compositions and freer realization. [ ecmreviews ]

CD ECM Records Joe Maneri, Barre Phillips, Mat Maneri: Angles Of Repose

2004

Joe Maneri - clarinet, saxofon alto si tenor
Barre Phillips - contrabas
Mat Maneri - viola

Joe Maneri, the eccentric, free-improvising saxophonist and pianist continues his long partnership with his son, Mat, a violinist. It’s a relationship that has been deepened by the duo’s collaborations with that great American double-bass player, Barre Phillips. Phillips’ technique and ear allow him to adapt readily to the Maneris’ fondness for lurking in the dangerous territories between the notes in the traditional western scale. Mat Maneri often plays an electric violin, and is frequently tumultuously energetic with it, but he restricts himself to viola on this session, and the set is entirely acoustic. …
A conversation between uncompromising equals, full of demanding but absorbing detail.

CD ECM Records Anouar Brahem: Le Pas Du Chat Noir

2002

Anouar Brahem - oud
Francois Couturier - pian
Jean-Louis Matinier - acordeon

The album is like a sad rhapsody, full of shadowy mirages and blue echoes, the prevailing melancholy not dour and heavy but rather light and cloudy. Names like Satie, Debussy, Mounir Bachir, even Eno in acoustic mode keep flashing across your mental screen as you listen. This is academy music with no clothes on, naked and awkward, honest and beautiful. Shut your eyes and you could be in the port of Dar el Baida, a seagull swooping over a grey-blue sea and huge cranes and rusty hulled freighters in the background, the light and forgetful breeze brushing your cheek. Le pas du chat noir features uncontrived performances of cat-like agility – soft, bright-eyed and magical. It is a brilliant piece of work. [ Andy Morgan, Songlines ]

CD ECM Records Ralph Towner: Anthem

2000
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, double-six

Operating somewhere between contemporary classical and jazz, ... Towner occupies a unique niche in jazz. Known for his carneo on Weather Report’s 1972 album I Sing The Body Electric and work with the classical crossover group Oregon and countless ECM luminaries, he is perhaps best loved for his solo recitals, of which Anthem is the latest – and it’s a gem. There’s a pair of jazz standards, but the majority of the mesmerising set comprises original 12-string and classical guitar pieces, aching, ruminative sketches and developed compositions of such emotional vividness and musical detail that they hardly seem to be the work of one man. The music tugs at the listener’s attention and, with breathtaking balance and control, is always compelling. The acoustic guitar has never sounded better, and neither has this amazing guitar player. CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Nomad Songs

2015

Stephan Micus - Ndingo, Genbri, Steel-String Guitar, Suling, Voice, Nay, Rewab, Rabab, Twelve-String Guitar, Fourteen-String Guitar, Tin Whistle, Shakuhachi

German born Stephan Micus is quite simply one of the most intriguing musicians in music. The multi-instrumentalist has over the course of many decades, concocted his own dialect playing instruments from cultures he has studied across the world. Micus’ albums generally take a few years to create as he builds layer upon layer of instrumentation, crafting each album with a particular theme in mind […] Micus’ twenty first ECM album “Nomad Songs” reflects in some respects cultures that have been uprooted from their traditions, have lived in peace and harmony wandering the land and due to factors beyond their control have had to adapt and relinquish their lifestyles as nomads. He integrates these new instruments into a palette as a pan cultural stew that musically represents harmony from seemingly disparate elements. […] This world melange takes the listener to many established places and even imagined ones, from the mind of one of the most captivating musicians around. The listener is taken on their own nomadic journey, and no matter where it brings them, the depth will reveal something different each time. [ CJ Shearn, Blueceej.com ]

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Ocean

1986

Stephan Micus - Voice, Hammered Dulcimers, Nay, Sho, Shakuhachi, Bavarian Zithers

Ocean is a set of acoustic ambient performances from Stephan Micus. He uses exotic instruments and techniques that give this disc electronic timbre. He combines hammered dulcimers, sho, a shakuhachi, a ney, zithers, and vocals in a swirling sound design that absolutely shimmers. The natural sonorities of these devices create vast atmospheres with organic timbres. The soundscapes penetrate and enhance brainwave activity. This great CD will appeal to fans of Robert Rich, Klaus Wiese, and Riley Lee. [ AllMusic ]

CD ECM Records Stephan Micus: Athos - A Journey To The Holy Mountain

1994

Stephan Micus - Bavarian Zither, Sattar, Shakuhachi, Suling, Flowerpots, Nay, Voice

If true meditation is not a centering but a shedding of the self into a plane where the ego no longer speaks under the illusion of a proper name, then Stephan Micus has walked some of the most meditative paths on disc. Inspired by a visit to the holy Greek mountain of Athos, his album of the same name bears traces of just such a traveler, one whose artistry sees medium and message as one. Those looking for anything close to the Byzantine chant that surely nourished his ears during this pilgrimage may feel disappointed. Then again, the Micus experience has never been about total re-creation, but rather about the ways in which the lens of his soul refracts all it comes in contact with during its itinerancy.

In June 1994 over three extraordinary nights at the celebrated Blue Note in New York City, Keith Jarrett's Standards Trio took American jazz to new heights. Keith Jarrett At The Blue Note - The Complete Recordings (six CDs) captures every tune from every set from every night - a unique documentation of one of this decade's greatest performances. Derek Watkins - trompeta
Henry Lowther - trompeta
Alan Downey - trompeta

Paul Rutherford - trombon
Hugh Fraser - trombon
Ray Warleigh- saxofon alto
Duncan Lamont - saxofon tenor
Evan Parker - saxofon sopran si tenor
Stan Sulzmann - saxofon tenor, flaut
Julian Arguelles - saxofon bariton

This two-disc set is a dazzling look at Kenny Wheeler's work as a composer. His breadth is stunning, from moody Oliver Nelson and Gil Evans-like expansiveness to compactly propulsive post-bop excursions. The first disc is taken up entirely with the eight-part "Sweet Time Suite."

Wheeler's scoring is bracing and emotive. Singer Norma Winstone is on hand for portions of it, offering a gloriously soaring counterpoint to the massed horn section. Wheeler's diverse background serves him well, as he's quite comfortable with both the traditional and the avant-garde (he worked in one of Anthony Braxton's important combos in the mid-'70s). For anyone unfamiliar with this stellar musician's work, this is is an excellent starting point, as is his first album as a leader, the remarkable GNU HIGH.

'Endless Days', then, is long-awaited. It's also Weber's first recording as leader of a 'group' in 12 years and will be hailed as a major event by ECM followers, particularly since the line-up, with bass/reeds/keyboards/drums, carries strong echoes of the halcyon days of Weber's 'Colours' band. Seven new compositions by Eberhard, plus a remake of 'The Last Stage of a Long Journey'.

Anja Lechner - violoncel
Felix Saluzzi - saxofon tenor
The Metropole Orchestra , dirijor Jules Buckley

Dino Saluzzi:
- Vals De Los Dias
- Plegaria Andina
- El Encuentro
- Miserere

Dino Saluzzi’s new music for orchestra and soloists characteristically glides through the borders between the idioms. A Saluzzi composition can, from one minute to the next, be “serious”, “popular”, “traditional”, “experimental -, even if these style divisions barely exist for a bandoneonist who prefers to see his work as “simply an expression of innocence”. “El Encuentro” was recorded live in Amsterdam with the Metropole Orchestra in February 2009 and is issued in time for Dino’s 75th birthday in May.

"For a country with such a small population, Norway has much to be proud of when it comes to the arts...and not just music, though it remains a country whose support has certainly resulted in a disproportionate number of creative musicians across the broadest musical spectrum. Looking at the violin and its variants alone, there is the traditional Hardanger fiddle work of Nils Okland, already known to fans of the ECM label for albums including Lysoen: Hommage a Ole Bull (2011), his subtle and sublime duo recording with pianist/harmonium player Sigbjorn Apeland; the more decidedly classical leanings of violinist Bjarte Eike, a member of keyboardist Jon Balke's Magnetic North Orchestra, most recently heard on Diverted Travels (ECM, 2004), and whose own The Image of Melancholy (BIS, 2014) is an overlooked gem; or the more pedal-to-the-metal work of violinist Ola Kvernberg in the recent debut of Grand General (Rune Grammofon, 2013).

1974
Ralph Towner - chitara clasica, chitara cu 12 corzi, pian
Jan Garbarek - saxofon sopran si tenor, flaut
Eberhard Weber - bas electric, violoncel
Jon Christensen - tobe, percutie

Down Beat: “Solstice inspires through its expressive openness… revealing depth of texture, nuance and meaning.” Perfect Sound Forever: “The LP is not only one of the moodiest ever published by ECM, but by anyone.” Solstice, recorded 1974, belongs to the great early production projects of ECM, with a new band formed in the studio. It’s the first of Towner’s recorded encounters with the European players, and this US-Norwegian-German quartet has a character all its own. Ralph’s synthesis of classical guitar technique and jazz improvisational skills inspires all participants on now-famous tunes including “Nimbus” and “Oceanus”. (Many future associations grew out of this meeting, including the Garbarek/Towner collaboration on Dis, and the integration of Eberhard Weber into the Jan Garbarek Group, and of Jon Christensen into Weber’s Colours band.)

CD ECM Records Steve Kuhn: Mostly Coltrane

2008

Steve Kuhn - pian
David Finck - contrabas
Joey Baron - tobe
Joe Lovano - saxofon tenor, taragot

This album of nine Trane compositions, two standards and two Kuhn originals, is his tribute to arguably the most influential saxophonist in post-bop jazz. Lovano is not one of those who took only Trane’s freedom and intensity and turned them into circus acts of rapidly blown blathers of notes: here he evokes the essence of Trane’s music, which had at its core a sincere, sensitive emotional component that many fans missed beneath the surface turmoil. The arrangements demonstrate just how beautiful many of Trane’s tunes were. [ Barry Witherden, BBC Music Magazine ]
